When a hummer comes inside...just grab a branch from outside quickly....the hummingbird recognizes it and lands. Then you carry the stick outside, bird and all. It only takes a minute or so and the bird doesn't waste energy flying around looking for a way out.
seeing this reminds me of this hummingbird that was injured by doorway. I took him to the city's humane center and they said they can't legally take him in. So I went to the next city over, and they asked me for ID to make sure I was resident of that city. I was not a resident so they couldn't take the bird in. The hummingbird died while I was driving. I really tried to help him but no one would help the bird. So i buried him in my backyard.
@YourFan: if the bird has a broken wing, I'm not sure there's much you can do. Hummingbirds need to eat every few hours. The "nectar" is one part sugar to four parts water. Bring it to a boil to dissolve the sugar and then LET IT COOL!!!
They're adorable, and you are a Bird Samaritan, but the irony of it all, is that Mankind is infringing on the territory of these. From Alaska to Patagonia, new housing and all. Take the bears spotted in a new settlement in Canada, et al. The houses ae just built smack int he middle of the Migration routes, and Humans are shocked when they see bears! At least build houses among trees, etc. Earth Houses are the answer- no wide lawns, gravel paths or wide garages. That time is coming soon.
