Sagging Twin Sleep Number Beds 10 Years Old

  • I sit on the edge of the bed to put on my shoes, which caused our twin size Sleep Number Beds to sag and not support our backs as originally designed. We've had the beds 10 years and love them, and we sadly thought it was time to replace them. They aren't cheap to replace so I wanted to see if I could fix them. This shows the fix and it works great. Maybe we'll gave rhem another 10 years!

Thanks so much for this idea! Our queen sleep number bed has sagged in the middle for a couple of years and this has made a great improvement. I made one change: Instead of leaving the adhesive of the duct tape exposed to stick to the foam and air bladders, I doubled it back on itself to create tape ribbon. I'm hoping this is less damaging to the pieces and easier to adjust the circumference, should that become necessary. Really appreciate your post.

Thank you very much. We did this to our California King size Sleep Number bed today. It really works.

If you strut mattress with duct tape as shown, seems like you’d feel a difference of support with your body at those trussed areas once you lay down. I’d be interested in what your wife’s comments are on modified mattress. If she couldn’t tell a difference, then I’m getting some duct tape! Good video for a common problem.

We have had a sleep number bed now for about 13 years, they have a 20 year pro rated warranty. We have loved the comfort of our bed and it has really helped my husbands back problems but we have also had problems with the sides sagging and have had the foam replaced 5 years earlier and now have the same problem. I would think after all these years they could have come up with a better solution to this cheap foam. We are now looking at air mattress's on line that seem to be better built and seem to have a better system that should prevent this problem and not as expensive! Oh about our pro-rated warranty, they will give us $800 towards a new mattress so we found one that was on sale for $600 off so we thought we could also get the $800 off but not the case, they would only give us an additional $200 off! Now that same mattress is $800 off so I'm sure we would get no additional savings! Doesn't make you feel like a valued customer!

I think for a prorated price, they will replace the edges.

Great idea. I took duck tape and joined the insides where the wall and the bottom separated. Afterwards I got some heavy duty Velcro on the bottom of the sides. Works great.

Sleep Number also recommends inflating the bed to 100 for a day. After ten years it makes sense the foam would flatten a bit. I would do it periodically just to do a little preventative maintenance like this.

I once owned C2 or C4 don’t remember which but my experience was fair to poor. The very first 48 hours the pump failed causing mattresses to deflate. Over a 8 year period the air pump had to be replaced three different times. My air pump was prorated over a five year period and after that you pay a whopping $500 for a pump.
The mattress ticking was poorly sewn and even the plastic foundation warped which caused a rocking motion. Oddly enough the air mattress themselves never failed but the O rings on the hose connectors did fail causing air leaks. When you have problems customer service makes you jump through their battery of test which involves disassembly or switching hoses or capping off the air valve on the mattress etc. If your old or have limited help your in for a real struggle. I really believe one needs a bed pit crew with spare parts to keep this bed running properly. There are too many parts which will fail. If you have a low sleep number you may find yourself experiencing the dreaded trampoline effect or sliding onto your partners side of the bed.
The best thing about owing it is the bed actually sleeps very good.
I’m currently looking for a new mattress. I remembered how well the Sleep Number bed slept but also that was only when all the parts were working.

A better fix than the duct tape would be put your shoes on sitting in a chair

Get a latex mattress! They last forever! See Mattress Expert.

This problem would be avoided if sleep number would use a medium firm Dunlop latex foam for the border rather than a cheap polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foams soften with use so no amount of duct tape, etc will fix that problem. This is just a temporary fix unfortunately. I have a pure botanical latex bed that I use on an adjustable bed and tie my shoes on the edge every morning for last several years. No sagging or collapse of the latex foam at all. Sleep number is just like all the name brand mattress manufacturers. Expensive beds built with the cheapest materials. That's why all the sales reps recommend you replace your bed every 8 years or so.

No mattress company usually helps after ten years, but you can buy new foam sides, or put a webbed strap all around the perimeter. One of the things I like about Sleep number is all the parts can be replaced or repaired. They sell all the parts, or get the parts elsewhere. Call them.

My mom bought this for my sick dad years ago and it has been a battle ever since … it’s impossible for her to change her sheets alone. I have to help every week. She lap has issues with foams year migratory route …. 😫 I’m not joke it’s an ordeal every time I talk to her about this bed …. She needs to sell it but she feels bad about selling this to someone thinking this will help out with a sick partner because she definitely would not buy this again

We bought a Sleep Number bed back in 2012. It's basically two twins on separate frames. The adjustability of each side is ok, but having a continuous surface bed is not so good. I told my wife that I wished we kept our water bad. At least you didn't have to stop and choose which side to use when things got passionate.

You are fortunate. On my KIngsize (two twins) all the foam being cheap grade crumbled. So I replaced all foam with better grade foam and it sleeps so much better. Also have second air bladder leaking.
