When we visited from Duluth, MN (another great lake port city) we wanted to check out some of the local hiking trails. A resource we used was the Alltrails app. It had a decent list of some local trails we'd like to explore. We ended up choosing Sensiba State Wildlife Area in Saumico. Funny enough, it was March and we got a heavy snow fall - but that didn't stop us from turning our hiking excursion into a snowshoeing one! The trails were great, and I especially enjoyed the stretch along the bay. Alltrails and the maps helped us stay on course.

The reason I was told for the Devils River is that the river was red from the clay. That's where East High School came up with their mascot, the Red Devil.

I don't know about the East River specifically, but I know other places like Devil's Lake in Wisconsin were so named because the Native Americans considered those places sacred or spiritual. Not necessarily evil spirits, but when the mostly-Christian European settlers arrived, they may have seen it that way.
