That 30s Mercedes has to be the manliest car I've ever seen. Non-synchronized transmission requiring double clutch shifts, and supercharger whine that makes the Hellcat sound like a weedeater.
The reason inline-8s didn't catch on was because the crankshaft needed to be very tough to withstand torque along such a length, whereas a V8 it didn't need to be since it was much shorter.
Ludicrous Not necessarily unreliable, just prohibitively expensive and difficult to make. And there's literally no need for one when you've got V8s and V12s.
+Fishfingers232 it would still be unique! it sounds like a a mix between a v8 and an i6.. if someone made a Lux car wouldnt you think it would be worth it? Bentley style pricing
The sound of the mercedes inline 8 is phenomenal. I was fortunate to have seen those 2 cars in action a few years ago and the sound is unbelievable. It can't be described. You have to hear it in real life to understand.
can you add the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine in a further video? it was one of the most powerfull aircraft engines in WW2. data: 18-cylinder radial engine displacement: 2800in³ (46L) power output: 2200hp to 3000+hp (latest versions) compression ratio: 6.7:1 or try to find something about the Napier sabre engine (the engine of the Hawker typhoon and Tempest fighters) Data: 24-cylinder H-type displacement: 2240in³ (36.6L) Power output: 2850hp (at 3800rpm with 18psi intake boost) 3040hp (4000rpm [war emergency power]) compression ratio: 7:1
Just a note: I can remember Pontiac in-line eights from long ago. MB's supercharged F1 car was a rarity, but the in-line eights were, at one time, fairly common.
+I Bugatti Veyron I (Bugattiliker3) Yes, you all do love it, that's why I keep the episodes of it coming :) There are some awesome engines waiting for another part, so stay tuned
+Casca Longinus yes you are correct on the origin of the Flying Millyard engine's cylinders. However, it was built by Alan Millyard, who has also built a viper v10 bike, among other cool things. Just search the "flying Millyard" on YT. The engine in the next two clips after the bike is the one visioracer got his information for though so it's just a matter of the wrong clip slipping in. The difference between the engines is quickly apparent if you look at the supercharger on the engine in the second and third clips.
+VisioRacer Goddammit, man! You've had an inline 8 in EVERY ONE of these videos. YES, we know about inline 8s!!!!! Move on... As for the Tatra V8, Moto Guzzi made a 500cc V8 MOTORCYCLE. That's way more impressive than a 2.5 V8...
I read a magazine article that described the Tatra V8 as sounding much as you would expect a 2.5 litre air cooled V8 to sound (i.e. pretty special), a cross between a Camaro and a 911. I've only ever heard one in real life. It sounded *nice*.
Man, I've rode the Kaw H1 and H2 bikes and the handling with stock HP was scary. I can't imagine what a seven cylinder in that chassis feels like. Woooo boy!
That in-line 8 Mercedes sounds so damn aggressive it's amazing! And the supercharger makes it sound like it's a revving battle between a formula and that super aggressive I8 I am wowed by that sound
fun fact that Mercedes inline 8 has roller main bearings and roller rod bearings. There are also 2 crankshafts, one for cylinders 1-4 and one for cylinders 5-8; power is sent to the transmission from the middle of the engine where the two cranks meet
If you happen to make another video, you should include the Tucker 48 (Torpedo) ohv flat-6, which was originally a helicopter engine. Great video btw :D; you earned a new subscriber.
+Sam Lotfi Not especially but because there weren't allowed to produce weapons (hahahaha) they concentrated on other stuff. Look at the Schneider Trophey. People from all over the world were producing beautiful amazing machines. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schneider_Trophy

Google it... I am neither retarded nor a troll. Trump will destroy America like he has everything he has touched.
How about the Brabus engines? Stock was a 700cc 3cl twin spark turbo with 101hp and around 110lbs, it's a really nice unit but they did a doubled up version which was a 1.4l V6 biturbo twin spark with around 160hp
5:04 - It's not a Honda, it's a Yamaha! ; D Back in 1991 I had the chance to ride a RD500LC and, man, it's a beast! You can't keep the front wheel on the ground, not matter how hard you try! : D
+Module79L Awesome machines. Currently hunting for one. If you still ride and love those old 2-strokes, grab an RZ350. Easier to work on. Most Banshee motor upgrades are bolt-on. Significantly lighter and also a wicked ride. Oh, and not crazy $$$ (Yea, I own one, and love it)
JB Offroad, that was when I was younger and 2-strokes were abundant. : ) Two of my biker friends, one had a TZR 250 and the other one had its super-motard version, the TDR 250. I liked the TZR better because it was nimbler and more powerful but no matter how many times I rode any of them I couldn't be prepared for the 500. : ) I rode a RD 350 LC once but it was more of a sports tourer, not a pure sportbike like the TZR or the RD 500 LC.
Module79L The RD350LC is in-between the RD and RZ, power and performance wise. Another on my list, but not yet. The TZR is a very nice bike, though I hear constantly that they are rather high maintenance, picky about tuning etc....(Not that I wouldn't love one) I'd instantly jump on a TDR though. Different, but just so cool. And rare.... Yea, I'm addicted to 2Ts :D
Supercharger in the Merc W25 sounds just like a Lancia Delta S4. I love the MPG readout in that 8 litre Chevy. Yup, if you've got one of them, you're going to be concerned about that.
the vortec 8100 may not sound too impressive but i drove a truck for a few weeks that had one and it had probably the best feeling powerband of any engine ive ever driven other than maybe the newer bmw v8's
+Stiffy GoaTs Jay Leno is the only private owner with one that he drives. The Peterson Museum in LA has one of the working ones as well. I don't know where the third is.
the inline 8 while supercharged while only producing roughly 300hp was a hell of a lot back in the day but now getting that number is fairly easy and nowadays 2200-2500hp is the goal right now
Not in a race car. Most race car have less than 1000 HP, only cars used for 1/4 mile or stupid drifting have more HP, because they don't need to last a complete race without blowing up.
+Juan Carlos Damonte that was meant as a general comment, but that is true that drags need the HP on both bottom- and top-end and drifting, like to have top-end power, however, i do agree with what you said
I subbed, awesome videos. If you make another unique engine video you should include the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 wasp. It's a 28 cylinder quad bank radial.
+aandptech10 There is one new video concept coming next, a bit different from all these, but still aimed on engine sound. Hope you will like it. And thanks!
the flying Millyard was made from two cylinders from a Pratt and Witney R1340 radial engine and is not the engine being run on the trailer (which looks like it could be 2 cyl off a Merlin)
+todd lithgow i actually heard they had an assembly line all ready to go, it was that efficiency standards came in while they were finalizing for mass production, which essentially killed off the jet car
+todd lithgow The turbine is more reliable than a piston engine, but they had poor mileage for the amount of output. In other words, it was a slow gas hog.
Jay Leno, the family of the late Frank Kleptz, and some damn museum curator (Thing should be on the road like the ones owned by Jay and the Kleptz family) are the three proud owners of the final surviving roadworthy Turbine cars. I have to wish them luck keeping the cars running, and hope Chrysler is willing to help them do so.
That first engine is not built from a Merlin, a Merlin is a watercooled V-12, and its built as two banks of 6, each in a single casting of 6. This engine however is aircooled, and each cylinder a single casting. The looks tell me that these are 2 cylinders of a radial aeroplane engine, most likely from Wright or Pratt&Whitney. Normaly these engines have 7 or 9 cylinders arranged as a ring around a central cranckshaft, the more powerfull versions might have 2 rings, the second behind the first. And there's even a version with 4 rings of 7 cylinders, so a total of 28 cylinders!, that was the Pratt&Whitney R-4360 (CI), output up to 3800hp.(supercharged). I was always afraid of revving an air cooled motor when it's sitting still like that.. God that thing must be near melting when it isn't getting airflow.. Unless I'm wrong, can somebody explain how the engine isn't overheating when still like that Tatra?
+Michael Tarantino Ever hear of a VW Beetle (Bug, if you're American), or pretty much any motorbike? What do you think the fins round the cylinders do? If you think about it, all engines are air cooled. Some use a water jacket and RADIATOR to RADIATE heat, and some increase the surface area (fins) to RADIATE heat. Got it?
The two-stroke inline-7 was a mistake. If I recall from the original video (and I may be wrong) he ran a number of engines together totalling 7 cylinders, and it is not, in fact, a single inline-7 engine. From the perspective of a musician who is tuned in to harmonics in sounds, I can tell you that it was not an inline-7.

7:30 - Damn, if police or ambulance would use that supercharger, they wouldn't even need a siren.
Jup that Roots is pretty intense
that inline 8 is mechanical porn..
lol
The inline 8 Mercedes is by far the best sounding. The german's race cars of that era have an outstanding sound (and look).
The reason inline-8s didn't catch on was because the crankshaft needed to be very tough to withstand torque along such a length, whereas a V8 it didn't need to be since it was much shorter.
I agree lol!
+Fishfingers232 That and packaging issues also caused by the length.
+Fishfingers232 so in other words they were unreliable? im sure in this day and age a I8 is possible no?
Ludicrous Not necessarily unreliable, just prohibitively expensive and difficult to make. And there's literally no need for one when you've got V8s and V12s.
+Fishfingers232 it would still be unique! it sounds like a a mix between a v8 and an i6.. if someone made a Lux car wouldnt you think it would be worth it? Bentley style pricing
inline 8 sounds better then V8 :)
+divljacina1 sounds like a motor bike a little bit though
+Fred Donnithorne the motor bike sound you here is the supercharger
oh ok cheers bud
+divljacina1 Inline always better than V... ;)
+George Badass no it really doesn't
The Millyard engine was not built from a Merlin V12, but froma Pratt&Whitney radial engine!
why do all the old supercharged racing engines sound so good?
+Loek “BraceFace” Meyers The whine of the supercharger.
+Plusile and that grumble of the engine, i mean just listen to the auto union typ c!

it was one of the most powerfull aircraft engines in WW2.
data:
18-cylinder radial engine
displacement: 2800in³ (46L)
power output:
2200hp to 3000+hp (latest versions)
compression ratio: 6.7:1
or try to find something about the Napier sabre engine (the engine of the Hawker typhoon and Tempest fighters)
Data:
24-cylinder H-type
displacement: 2240in³ (36.6L)
Power output:
2850hp (at 3800rpm with 18psi intake boost)
3040hp (4000rpm [war emergency power])

Because it is exactly that

I am 54 and I have grown to enjoy the raw torque at lower rpm, instead of pushing until the engine screams that it has had enough,
I think the 4.2 TDI was in the Top Gear episode in which Clarkson drove from London to Edinburgh and back on 1 tank.
Bonus points for the Tatra baby V8 and the Merc straight 8!
is the hemi at 10:27 the Tatra?

That Mercedes W25, what a sound!
No matter if the 8 Cyl is V configuration or inline, it will always sound powerful
Jesus that supercharger on that I8 is loud as fuck
man that straight 8 sounded mean, I love it.
The 5 liter 2 cylinder motorcycle engine is actually two cylinders from a Pratt and Whitney radial engine.
That Mercedes-Benz Inline-8 @ 7:24 !!!
its kinda cool seeing how similar 8 cyl engines sound even if there inline or not and also that 2.5l v8 sounds beefy but only makes 105hp haha
what is the sound of the inline 8 when he is not hitting the gas? (sorry for bad english)
+SpazNeR That's whining sound of supercharger/compressor

charlesvan13 well when we can figure out hydrogen fuel it could reappear
personally, the Volkswagen Touraeg had a v10 Diesel that put out 550 lb ft torque. So if you could put that in, thanks!
8:25 lol 2 mpg!
Lorenza Semaj McCoy Jr. or rather the inefficiency
@@senzar9970 1 Mile Per Gallon... What.
I wish more bikes were made with I-6's. They're naturally balanced, and sound like a formula 1 car.

Love German turbo sounds. My Jetta certainly has a different turbo sound than my Eclipse had
Are you able to find anything on the Ford Nucleon?
+Musclecarlover7 Probably not, but interesting vehicle

I hate the supercharger whine on the Mercedes W25, but the exhaust is glorious.

The engine on the first bike is not part of a merlin engine, it´s made from two cylinders from a Pratt & whitney radial engine
9:18. So this guy just started a 2.5l V8 with a rope like your standard lawn mower.
man, that I7 did sound awesome... I8 isn't so mad though, just think about Duesenberg's amazing supercharged I8
This Tatra V8, sounds brilliant.

I was about to make a similar comment!
Pratt & Whitney R-1340 is where Millyard got the cylinders and pistons. Used on the North American AT-6 WWII trainer (amongst others)
the supercharged inline 8 had the best/most unique sound of the bunch.
how can you make a 5L Vtwin out of a 24L V12?

that mercedes sounds like the best sounding car ever
the first engine was built out of two cylinders from a Pratt and Whitney 1340 radial by Allen Millyard' from England

+Josh Bennett If I see correctly, every single cylinder has its own exhaust pipe not merged with any other. That's why you hear 1-cylinder engine tone
VisioRacer Sounds a bit 2-cylindery to me, although you may be right.
0:46 there is so much murica in that shot.
If school taught stuff like this, I'd actually enjoy going lol
Where was the hill climb involving those straight 8 supercharged cars? Great video btw.
+mog44 Check original videos via links included in the description. It may help
Theres a 4.2l V8 TDI Q7 down the road from me it sounds amazing
what was that last engine?
That A8 tho sick!
I have an 84 Crown Vic, just bought a radial for it... no Idea how I'm gonna get it in there...
