Love your Golden retriever He's gorgeous. When I am in the woods I always take my Jack Russell he Loves it out in the woods He even helps me Gather firewood and he Warns me if Somebody is About. I bet your dog does as well

That tin, already having hinges, does not need any additional holes. Neither for making char by placing it in a fire, nor for making char by snuffing.
Only tins that are airtight, watertight or very, very close to being either need a hole. A 1/16" hole for every pint capacity is sufficient for tins that do need a hole. Holes are best drilled through both the lid and lip of a tin. With any symmetrical tin without a hinged lid this allows us to turn the lid to protect the char, then align the holes to make char with the pyrolysis method.

Rule one of lighting a fire, clear at least a metre around your camp fire prior to lighting it. Sorry for nit picking, but I’ve seen it in every vblog on here. With over 20 years experience in the Australian Army, I used to get my butt kicked for not clearing my fire area out in the bush. Please show the guys up mate, very proud of what your doing.
