Thanks for the quick response and the video.
I remember in my first playthrough, I had a very timid/cautious play style, and always attempted exclusive ranged attacks .... spells and/or arrows.
At the time I had no clue about the mechanics. All I noticed was that in "dark dungeons" my ranged attacks couldn't hit a barn door at 20 paces. All I got was "Miss" followed by me throwing my mouse at the screen.
Memorably... The Goblin Camp... trying to fire from the roof beams, the dank crypt, the Underdark etc.
In fact, I was suffering, and only coping by using alternate strategies all the way up to the Foyer Fight at Moonrise Towers in Act 2. That's when the frustration finally made me sit on the web for hours, trying to understand it (Reddit, fledgling Wiki etc) .
It's when I first realised that Gale and Laezel were blind as a bat in anything but open daylight (Forest etc). Also, all my "Darkvision Capable" characters couldn't see shit past 12m (40ft). So attempting a clever ranged "Surprise" attack from 60m (the edge of the white circle) was not working.
My main character was a Wood Elf Rogue Thief also, so sneaking around in preparation turning off all the lights (Torches, Braziers etc) was actually putting me at a massive disadvantage for the inevitable big fights.
My coping strategy at first was to just cast Daylight spell as soon as the fight started... but then of course my Thief and/or Astarion were lit up like a Christmas Tree, and couldn't Hide/Sneak Attack anywhere.
    It was painful.
Obviously, I've learned a lot since then, but now, whenever I try to incorporate Darkness, Fog or otherwise ambient "Dim Light" (Partially Obscured) or "No Light" (Heavily Obscured), my best laid plans still seem to stuff up, because some things still do not seem to work as I expected.
Example, Warlock DevilSight not working in a Fog Cloud was a big "WTF?" moment.
Thanks for doing this video. There's a lot of moving parts here I still don't fully understand.

Yo, I felt that. All of that, haha. From the mouse to the trying something as blunt force as Daylight and it backfiring, and same with the torches actually hindering you. Lol
My personal goofy journey from understanding it finding out how stupid darkness was by accident with my Warlock. I thought these clouds and grease spells were so pointless and "inefficient" and then I stepped into the Dark cloud with my Warlock and was like "Wait.... why do I have advantage on my shots" and then I got addicted to that cheese.
Anyways, thanks again for the cool request and I'm glad if it helped even a little understanding the differences, since it also helped me understand the nuances.

    Amazing!
I switched my builds around after watching that shadow sorc video. Picked up Devil sight on my lock after using the push back first 2 acts. Combo-ing with eversight on archer & and shart-spear (yeah i just HAD to massacre that town); and it has been a real blast in Act 3. Seeing how you were able to use darkness offensively changed the game up big time for me.
This video answered a lot of questions I had regarding the different types of 'visions' and about the whole fog cloud thing. Appreciate this information greatly.

Makes me happy! Darkness was how I overcame Honour Mode my first time beating it! Fun to find out how powerful it is, but now I have to limit its usage lol.

From what I can gather, it's the Blindness caused by Darkness or Fog Cloud that reduces attacks to a distance of 3m, not the cloud itself. So anything that causes immunity to Blindness treats both as if they aren't there when making attacks from inside them (other than giving the attacking from the shadows buff to give advantage). Which seems a bit weird but I think that's how the game handles it. Which is why Devil's Sight works in Darkness but not Fog Cloud. Because it's a conditional immunity to a certain type of Blindness caused specifically by Darkness, and only up to a certain range.

I think this is the way to look at it, no pun intended.

Another aspect to watch out for is the interactions of Ambient Lighting (Clear, Lightly Obscured and Heavily Obscured) and Enemy/NPC Vision Cones (Red painted zones on the floor when attempting to Crouch/Hide).
Tip #1 - Super Tip.... before blowing an Action or Bonus Action on Hide/Crouch.... HOLD DOWN THE SHIFT KEY. This will paint the Vision Zones (Red surfaces) without needing to be hidden. It will save you trying to Hide (spending an Action or Bonus Action) then immediately failing the stealth check (wasting a precious combat resource).
There are some enemies that clearly have Superior Dark Vision, and/or Blindness Immunity and/or Devils Sight, and they will spot you regardless. It's usually listed as an ability when you "Examine" them (Their "Cheat Sheet"), but you might not always notice it. Usually you are just checking their Ability Stats and Damage Immunities.
The "Hold Shift Key" will prevent getting caught out by this.

Yeah these are great points, I didn't really clarify on how I was showing the sight lines and how they are affected with these spells. So, thanks for dropping the tips! Raph and Yurgir I think are the only 2 dudes who have Devil's Sight. I think Sarevok has blind immunity, because his helmet does, but wiki doesn't say that he does.

I find it interesting that being immune to blindness seems to give characters the ability to fire into darkness, because that seems like it really shouldn't work according to the way the game describes the effect. If you take "blindness immunity" to mean strictly immunity to the blindness condition, then you wouldn't necessarily think that it would give you the ability to see into darkness from the outside. That means that they must have taken this specific interaction into account when they were making the blind immunity feature.
Great video, it was great to learn about that interaction since it might help me in future playthroughs.

Exactly. I know its just game code and table top rules, but its always funny with the logic. I'm going to pay attention next time in a literal dark area with the blind ring on. I don't know if it was Devil Sight or Eversight Ring in Act 2 against Yurgir and I was like OH... No, this doesn't help me here. After studying this for the video, I'm guessing it was indeed the Blind Immunity ring because Devilsight is basically just Super Superior Darkvision and I would've been able to shoot in the dark area during that run.

    What about Hadar?

    • @boo63735
      @boo63735 4 дні тому +1

I'm pretty sure Hadar uses the same blind effect as darkness.

Hadar is funny because it blinds those in it, but not outside of it looking in. Its unlike darkness and fog in that way. I wanna maybe follow up on this with a quick look at Hadar specifically.
