I absolutely love the relationship with Ted. It's such a cool version of a patron and the relationship works so well. It's hilarious thinking of Opal whisper shouting at her sister/patron and the rest just being confused.
Same! I've never seen a players sibling be their patron but I love the idea lol even though the thought of one of my siblings being my patron gives me an immediate headache 💀
Ep 1. made me love Dariax with his spear shenanigans, ep 2. made me love Dorian with his hug shenanigans. I feel like the more this goes on and the more hijinks they get into, the more I'll fall in love with the whole crew.
I want Robbie to have a guest spot in the next season. I would love to have Will Friedle back again. And I feel like both of them together would be just ultimate hell that they could raise in a game.
When Fearne goes “The feywild is where the feywild is” and Matt goes “Gotcha” and then mouths “WHAT?” at everyone is a truly unappreciated moment, had me cracking up.
I feel like matt won't keep any of the canon aabria has created, out of respect of this being her lore.. but if he does keep some of it for campaign 3 it would be cool
i LOVE that matt has seized hold of this opportunity to just turn his brain off. "i'm legitimately not following any of this" absolutely buddy you deserve it
@@ForeverWog He's legit in playing the character with an INT of 8. And since he doesn't have to DM...he doesn't have to pay attention to what's going on. LOL.
@@RiptidePen He's been a player in a few one shots and other channels' campaigns, but this is definitely the first like, campaign long character(even if it's a short campaign).
"And it is said, to this day, there is a thief, part of the group The Nameless Ones, called Arthur who stands by the west gate, holding a silk rope, looking lovelorn, just stares out into the west. Maybe, one day, this love shall return."
“…Until approximately 54 seconds later, when Charm Person ceases its hold over his mind, and he looks about to the grins of a dozen giggling onlookers.”
No one ever has to go there, but I am hoping that at one point in a campaign Orym, Fearne, or really anyone just makes a reference to Kansas, Tal'dorei just to mess with Matt. Laura would do it. You know she's watched this. Or Travis.
Me too, mainly because i really feel like it's hiding something underneath. It's like a combo of Jennifer Coolidge, and Joan Cusack's character in Adam's Family Values. Like, she might be a pretty woman who's a lot more quick-witted than she lets on, or she might be an axe wielding psychopath. Either way i am HERE FOR IT.
The saying "Time is a weird soup" actually makes a lot of sense considering Fearne is from the Feywild and time has a different flow over there. As seen in CR1, VM was only in the Feywild for a couple days but in Exandria weeks had passed.
@@anthonydavis5288 Happy Fun Ball wasn't like the Feywild. It was a stable ratio created by a time control machine, adjustable at will for whoever knows how it works.
@@theuncalledfor I had observed how the Feywild messes with time to their advantage and sometimes not so as with Ferne. The fun ball was similar in its time manipulation.
Fighting for their lives seems like a stretch. The dude didn't even bother drawing his weapon. I think Arthur was in considerably more danger. She'd scare the shit out of me. Lol
The most unexpected, and funniest moment from the entire session. No one expects public BDSM. Honestly, now I'm just remembering campaign 1 and the crew talking about being polyamorous. Such a good episode. 🤣
Liam: Okay this time I don't want to play a charakter with high intelligence, Caleb was really intense The rest of the party: somehow manages to build characters with even lower intelligence
This campaign goes to show why I love brand new players, they try shit experienced players don't do. Experienced players don't try to change the channel on the vision they're having from their Warlock patron! XD
@@thesaltybeard1793 I played a Warlock who's patron was his Mother. A lot of sweat was in vested in convincing her that everything was fine, and no she did not need to come to the Prime for a visit. It was also kind of weird because that warlock was his own father. (because demons are bad at linear time).
Vox Machina: The inspiring classic film to start a franchise. Mighty Nein: The mainstream successful blockbuster sequel. Exandria Unlimited: The loosely related Saturday morning TV cartoon spin-off.
I feel like Matt made the perfect character to play in his own world. Low intelligence AND wisdom. He needs to know NOTHING. You can also see him picking up on character traits and quirks he loved from his players. Pranks/pranks between party members? Grog, Vax, and Jester. Hating the animal companion? Scanlan. Makin suboptimal choices for fun? That's Sam every PC. It's so fun to see. (let me know if there are other traits I missed)
The live show Episode 109 of Campaign one,ua-cam.com/video/t7oLhv6HKl4/v-deo.html, where Matt tears up his notes says otherwise. They kept up their shenanigans for close to an hour straight.
There's this vibe yeah haha. Tbh to how much a DM should be lenient is pretty much up to who you ask. A lot of people think Matt is too lenient with his players too.
I think he was subtly asking if his dwarven advantage of saving throws against poison would apply here. If it's a magical effect, then it wouldn't. If this is just because ash is toxic to the lungs, it probably should have.
@@DangerDurians Yeah, it's like. "You inhale water and begin to drown" Is the water, magical? "...Nooooo" So does my advantage against poisons help? Cause it's killing me because it's toxic? "It's killing you because not air is filling your lungs and life needs things to live."
I think they should have received some warning, so they could wrap their faces etc before just getting a whole point of exhaustion. Seems a little unfair.
Aimee: "I owe someone an apology. Ted are you listening?" Aabria: "Always" Aimee: "Mister, I'm very sorry for throwing a dagger at you." Aabria: "I hate you" Aimee: "BYE!" I loooove this dynamic! I'd never guess Aimee is a first time player she's already a master of role playing! Loving this so far!
@@45H3R well there's a difference between improv roleplaying and acting out a script. I've seen other first time player actors in other games and they're not as comfortable with the roleplay that robbie and aimee have shown.
@@7on this is my first real exposure to aimee and I don't know if she mentioned any past improv experience but i've read somewhere that some of her funny lines as Adora in the Netflix She-ra series were improvised. The creator largely didn't envision the character to be funny but aimee's improvised lines worked so well that they were kept in.
Everyone keeps talking about how Matt made a silly dumb character, but no one is talking about how he specifically chose cleric spells to be the healer of the group while avoiding wisdom being his spell casting stat, and also avoiding having to have any sort of deity attachment or commitment. He's playing a one-shot joke character in a full campaign.
He is playing a character that is the most role fulfilling, while being almost entirely detached from knowing anything real about the world so he doesnt have to get confused about what he knows from creating the world, and what he knows in character
Opal: "Could you stick a fist in the ash-hole?" Dariax: "We don't know how dangerous that could be... so maybe just take it gently." Fearne: "I could see if I could just get a fist in." Dariax: "Easy! Start with a couple fingers." Opal: "Wait! Spit on your hand first." ------ Aimee: I'm really banking on the fact that my parents will NOT be watching this episode. ------- Ashley: "I fingered the ash hole and nothing happened."
Patrons have to be one of the best reasons to pick a Warlock. Their relationships can be so unique like Fjord and Uk'otoa having this eldritch being sleeping and manipulating his desires and makes him believe he is powerless, and then we have opal and ted which are the embodiment of the "this is why mom doesn't fucking love you" vine.
My warlock's patron is an archfey who is also her very protective and anxious single dad. She just wants to read the books in all of the big libraries and bookstores in the world and he's just so comically protective of her that he just gave her magic and presents so she's safe in her travels lol
Mine is the King in Yellow, Hastur the Unspeakable. My character also loves collecting books and information across the realm, but also spreading the yellow miasma via performing the vile theater play with major image and other illusory psionics. My favorite was doing a puppet show for a bunch of kids, dooming the town’s gene pool.
@@LetTheBodyFall You realize it's supposed to be like, an evil pact, right? I'd NEVER let a player make a *warlock* with such a happy bubbly patron. That's ridiculous, lmao.
Robbie: "Put your hand in the ash hole" Ashley: "I was gonna see if I could put my fist in it" Matt: "Be gentle. Start with a few fingers." Aimee: "Wait, *SPIT ON IT FIRST*" I'M FREAKING DEAD
Don't get me wrong C1 with it's Good vs. Evil was brilliant. C2 with all the morality questions was beautifully relatable. But damn do I love watching chaotic morons who make decisions based on the motto "for the LOLZ"
Ah, the moral nuance of pouring acid down the throat of a sleeping minimum wage worker and then holding him down while he slowly dies an agonizing death. Very relatable.
You can tell Matt is having a blast playing someone who’s ignorant of the world lore and mechanics. I bet it’s a little boring reducing your POV to one character after constantly being a DM, but Matt has always enjoyed his players taking the reigns so I’m sure it’s fine. He’s like Liam, once he’s into a character he’s in, he embodies it totally
@@scrumpors8706 sure ím DMing the most of the time and I love to Play when I have the opportunity :) its easy to recognise on Matts style he is DMing alot... He plays more of a supporting character and roleplays a wacky one :)
I love that you can still see his DM brain ticking in the background like him taking notes when abriaa mentioned the ashari using hand signs and him making a quick note as that got added into his own image of his world
Underrated moment of this episode is Robbie screaming "OPAL GET HIM! GET HIM OPAL!" as he's desperately grappling one Nameless One while Opal is trying to convince Arthur to go get drinks with her.
It's 100% an abuse/misunderstanding/DM overleniency for a new player of how charm person works. It just makes them more friendly to you. It doesn't change their other allegiances, it doesn't make them act unreasonably or out of their own character. It just makes them like you. It absolutely wouldn't make a cultist walk away from another cultist getting gangbanged by the people they were looking for.
Was watching a show where some characters were riding and one said to the other: "Let's ditch these horses and hoof it from here," and I thought, that is the only context where it would be confusing to say 'hoof it' - (I wanna say it was Attack On Titan I was watching)
“Well, how would you feel if you were a baby left in prison? It’d be awful.” - Fearne “Jokes on you! I love hugs!” - Dorian “It’s really fun to just take a little bit every day.” - Fearne about Suude “I’m going to change the channel chapter.” - Opal - Opal: “We killed their vibes.” Dorian: “By killing them.” Dariax: “Vibe ends pretty abruptly by that point.” - “Orym, I don’t doubt that they’re good people, but we have a guild of murderers, assassins, and thieves after us, we’re in possession of an incredibly powerful, dangerous item that I don’t just want to give away, we found illegal drug precursors. And now, what, we’re going to fix their crater problem too?” - Dorian “That’s rough, buddy.” - Dariax channeling his inner Zuko “Congratulations, Orym, we volunteered five minutes and the sky’s on fire.” - Dorian

@@adriannaford4186 not a reference. Since the episodes are prerecorded Matt films the ad spot afterwards. Aabria mentioning a glitter beard forces him to do one when he wasn’t planning to
It wasn't "likeability" that kept Sam alive, and he wasn't that good of a fighter, what kept Sam alive was his courage, bravery, good heart, unwavering loyalty to his friends, and the famous Halfling luck.
@@thefracturedbutwhole5475 Maybe film Sam was a bit less of a fighter, but after that Spider got him, in the book he was found and brought to a stronghold. Sam was very much a good Halfling fighter freeing Frodo.
In the book Sam was mistaken for an elven warrior in the tower of Cirith Ungol as he fought his way through it to free Frodo. All he had was Sting, the Phial of Galadriel, and maybe, I might be missremebering, Frodo's mithril mail shirt under his elven cloak. Those aren't especially powerful magic items but Sam had the Orcs panicked, Samwise Gamgee is a fighter, possibly even a paladin, build disguised as a gardener and servant.
Matt: *maintains a master pokerface as much as possible when his characters make decisions so as not to give away what the consequences will be* Aabria: It’s going to go SO badly if he falls in there, PLEASE do something! I love them both. 😂
Matt is also playing a character who has 1 brain cell. Which he found discarded on the ground. It might not working. Collectively, they have maybe 5 brain cells. If Aabria doesn't try to get them to do something, theyr're all gonna die a stupid death by a door falling too hard NEXT to them
We need more campaigns with Matt as a player. I'm amazed at how much of a perfectly minmaxed dumbass Dariax is just so Matt doesnt have to explain anything for once. Which also makes him a walking engine of chaos and I love it.
@@respectfulevil9022 He's a divine soul sorcerer, but being a mountain dwarf gives him armor proficiency which makes him way more powerful than your average sorcerer, along with the subclass giving a much better spell list than sorcerers usually have
Thought that too. I distinctly remember 3 instances in M9 where he amended what a player was trying to accomplish with thaumaturgy. But good for him for getting it by a different DM haha
Footprints would have done the same job, but I think he was just going for a funny moment. The Rule Of Cool is heavily ingrained into Aabria's DMing so why not?
I think it all comes to the difference between the Two DMs. Mat's style includes preparing for everything and finding himself unprepared. He loves his players exploring misteries and that's what he focuses on DM-ing. Here tho the focus is more on playing through the story and having some chaotic fun. Which leads to a different impact from the rules. Aka It's not Mat's style to DM whimsicaly, but he needed to blow some steam off and choosing a whimsical dm was what they all needed. Including him. They spesificaly wanted her style of dm-ing, given that they had auditions and she came ontop.
Well, being devil's advocate for a bit, with Thamaturgy I believe you can throw your voice a bit far and loud, making it sound like you got a speaker on ya. It's either that, aiding your own speach, or creating a non existent brief/simple sound
"Don't look at him, look at me". Loved this moment when Aabria kindly joked that she's in control in this game. That was really wholesome and well said.
2:59:16 The "I'm sorry did I fucking stutter?" caught me so off-guard but goddamn was it funny! I love the frankness and sass of the jargon they're building with each other.
“Oh No Plateau…” *You get inspiration!* “The Double D’s…” *No! [Says it herself] NOOoooo!* “Ash Hole…” *You get Inspiration!* “But Matt said it first.” *You both get Inspiration!*
@@Anisozygoptera I love that she was like "here's 5k gold" I really hope they do something interesting with the presumably plethra of cash they will receive
Both the gold and the inspiration make sense for an accelerated campaign, I think. The inspiration could help progress the story with increased successful investigations, and the gold makes sure they won't run into barriers where they know what they want to do but don't have resources to do it.
@@spacecowboyeddie6803 - Thank you for this! I was about to watch that part again, thinking I must have missed Matt saying it. Nice to get the confirmation that it was Liam. :)
"We're a very chaotic group." What was your first hint matt!? The rooftop spear pissing contest?! Was it the mid-combat voyeuristic shibari?! The tasting of rocks?! The plant eating fire monkey!?
The whole time I was wondering why Matt had glitter in his beard, then as soon as the clip ends Aabria creates the paradox that made it necessary lol. Also the muscle memory of looking top left as soon as Matt talks is super strong. Aabria's high rolling d20 came from Taliesin, further proof he does some sort of enchantment on his d20s. And Dorian touches the crown and starts larping as Barney Rubble with the lifeless black eyes.
It's from the years of giving trinket and sprinkle such a pass, he's wanting some pet to die. He made Thaddeus dip out and never let him come back because fuck that noise.
Ashlee: "When you don't know how something works, you just throw a bunch of stuff at it and see what sticks." Mercer: "The scientific method" As a researcher, yes, that is exactly how it is done...
@@AAAndrew okay, now I want to play a kobold artificer with this in mind, and when asked what he does, he just literally throws something (which may or may not explode), shout “SCIENCE!!” and then write down the results
I LOVE how Aimee just nails the Spider Queen thing unknowingly. such a great moment! Of course that is kind of a logical thing to guess based on what the vision was, but still cool.
It’s really nice seeing Ashly in action , and speaking a lot more , I didn’t watch campaign 1 , so I don’t know if she was super active as Pike , but as Yasha ( more quiet , shy ), and maybe cause they are a big group , she was less active , so seeing what she actually has to offer with this character (more bubbly and active ) , it’s just a joy , love that
When pike was able to play she was pretty active sadly out of the hundred plus episodes in season 1 shes in like 50. And a few of them were through Skype. I am loving Ashley more lately.
She Skyped in a lot during campaign one so was pretty reactionary, speak when spoken to. Agreed that it's nice to have her more vocal. I think in general Yasha was a quiet character, which is fine
I am so proud of Matt. Usually he's the one behind the dungeon masters screen facepalming at the players antics, but here he is, leading the fucking ash-hole charge. He's still facepalming, but on the other side :D
Gotta give his Poker Face props. He just got informed one of his most beloved characters is going to be imitated in the next session and the man didn't so much as raise an eyebrow. The question is: is she going to be acting like Gilmore or acting like Matt acting like Gilmore?
at 1:32:14 after Robbie talks about harmonizing with the lullaby you literally see Liam realize "This guy loves solo character moments as much as I do." This isn't a bad thing btw, I loved Calebs Frumpkin chats and I hope moments like this continue for Dorian.
I feel like Orym is a lot like a little dog that thinks he's a big dog - loyal and ready to fight. Also, Opal is D&D Elle from Legally Blond and I think its amazing! And Aabria as DM is so great! I cannot wait to see her as Gilmore. I'm just so happy with this whole adventure so far.
Some of Dorian's gems (minor spoilers): 26:31 I'm going to look at my group and say "I'm sorry" with my eyes. 35:56 "Jokes on you. I love hugs." ❤ [Chef's kiss]

I love that all of Ashley’s recent characters have a habit of making dire pronouncements, followed by an “I’m just kidding”.
You think she killed her whole family under a bridge?
@@haku8135 it’s just a halfling expression.
Murdered my family.
@@WhitneyHempsey threw them under a bridge.
Matt's "That's rough buddy" went completely unnoticed.
I caught it
wait when? because he's said it multiple times.
watching aimee carrero be new to d&d and do her best and be great at what she's doing gives me comfort in starting my first actual campaign one day
"Don't look at him, look at me". Loved this moment when Aabria kindly joked that she's in control in this game. That was really wholesome and well said.

Thank you!
All of the confidence and skill she's bringing to Critical Role is just such a gift
I was dying when she said that so aggressively lol. So perfect.
03:08:15 Can you imagine how even further off the rails this conversation would go if they had Laura Bailey there to be a bad influence on everyone?
Spiritually I feel like she was there. It's her influence on Liam and Matt from years of playing together lmao
Aimee is a pretty good stand in here.
"Probably someplace dark... that's all I got" says Matthew Mercer who has the entire lore of Exandria imprinted onto his brain.
Aimee’s voice for Opal is consistent Drunk Adora and I am here for it
I'm definitely adding "I've moved on spirituality from this moment" into my vocabulary.
Oh, same here
So I hit play half way through this today, heard this quote exactly as the first thing, then glanced down at the comments and saw this. 🤯
YES
I was scanning for this comment cause same
2:59:16 The "I'm sorry did I fucking stutter?" caught me so off-guard but goddamn was it funny! I love the frankness and sass of the jargon they're building with each other.

@@Mujigsuppa thanks!
SO fucking funny, caught me off guard too
I mentally went "Oh shit" when she said that, it was amazing
“Oh No Plateau…” *You get inspiration!*
“The Double D’s…” *No! [Says it herself] NOOoooo!*
“Ash Hole…” *You get Inspiration!* “But Matt said it first.” *You both get Inspiration!*
I really like that Aabriya uses the inspiration mechanic so liberally.
Liam: *the one who actually made the ash hole joke...smiles quietly in no Inspiration*
@@spacecowboyeddie6803 - Thank you for this! I was about to watch that part again, thinking I must have missed Matt saying it. Nice to get the confirmation that it was Liam. :)
"We're a very chaotic group."
What was your first hint matt!? The rooftop spear pissing contest?! Was it the mid-combat voyeuristic shibari?! The tasting of rocks?! The plant eating fire monkey!?
The door. They can't get past a DOOR
"Roll your real dice then, coward!"
This is how we anger the dice gods ...
You cant train digital dice or put them in dice jail. Respect RNGesus.
Thank you!! My brain did not register why Matt was cursing the glitter beard comment.
If you listen you can hear matt say "I hate you" when she mentioned the glitter beard
Dariax is channeling Scanlan's spirit by trying to murder the party pet at every opportune moment
It's from the years of giving trinket and sprinkle such a pass, he's wanting some pet to die. He made Thaddeus dip out and never let him come back because fuck that noise.
Ashlee: "When you don't know how something works, you just throw a bunch of stuff at it and see what sticks."
Mercer: "The scientific method"
As a researcher, yes, that is exactly how it is done...
What makes it science is that you write down what you throw and what happens when you throw it. Science!
@@AAAndrew okay, now I want to play a kobold artificer with this in mind, and when asked what he does, he just literally throws something (which may or may not explode), shout “SCIENCE!!” and then write down the results
Love how Dariax personifies " No thoughts just vibes."
Ashley trying to contain her excitement when Keyleth and Vox Machina come up is the cutest thing ever.
When does that happen?
1:10:25 Keyleth and Vox Machina
3:53:05 Gilmore
@@johnnyb368 Thanks!
Ashley's new character is so cool. Naive sweetness with a touch of chaos danger
I LOVE how Aimee just nails the Spider Queen thing unknowingly. such a great moment! Of course that is kind of a logical thing to guess based on what the vision was, but still cool.
Not Liam inadvertently being the most intelligent member of the party once again.
"do you guys think the nameless ones have anything to do with the guards?" "yes, all of us." "OHHHHHH" "spoke too fast"
Before, it was by a choice. Now it's a result of the elimination, purely by a chance.
He has the Hermione gene, he can't not try to prevent a preventable disaster. This is like a party of nothing but Jesters
Liam is also the only one who laughed at "Hi hole!" That is a man who is aware of gay culture.
@@chaselevinson7950 Liam is also the one who came up with the ‘ash hole’ joke XD Bi King is AWARE.
It’s really nice seeing Ashly in action , and speaking a lot more , I didn’t watch campaign 1 , so I don’t know if she was super active as Pike , but as Yasha ( more quiet , shy ), and maybe cause they are a big group , she was less active , so seeing what she actually has to offer with this character (more bubbly and active ) , it’s just a joy , love that
She was in New York City a lot during Campaign 1 as well, so I don't know
When pike was able to play she was pretty active sadly out of the hundred plus episodes in season 1 shes in like 50. And a few of them were through Skype. I am loving Ashley more lately.
So, in campaign 1 pike was absent a lot but when she was there I loved every minute of it. Her friendship with Grog was amazing.
I think he's delighting in contributing in the chaos, rather than feeling obligated to keep things from completely falling off the rails.
Gotta give his Poker Face props. He just got informed one of his most beloved characters is going to be imitated in the next session and the man didn't so much as raise an eyebrow.
The question is: is she going to be acting like Gilmore or acting like Matt acting like Gilmore?
@@dalimoreomali2994 I can't wait to see that part xD
"It's okay. It's okay. Dirty 1."
MATT THAT IS NOT OKAY
Its better than a natural 1, thats for sure.
"do you think it belongs to the queen spider" GM frowns in exposition
I listen to the podcasts, and I only came to the VOD to see the GM face journey
at 1:32:14 after Robbie talks about harmonizing with the lullaby you literally see Liam realize "This guy loves solo character moments as much as I do." This isn't a bad thing btw, I loved Calebs Frumpkin chats and I hope moments like this continue for Dorian.
I love how good a roleplayer Robbie is despite it being his first time playing d&d!
They’re both theater kids!
@@fredfullthedreadful And amazing voice actors. Checks out.
You know, I always thought Opal was like that blonde girl from High School Musical
I'm going to assume shell have Gilmore retired, or will be at a different branch, rather than voice one of Matts most beloved characters
Some of Dorian's gems (minor spoilers):
26:31 I'm going to look at my group and say "I'm sorry" with my eyes.
35:56 "Jokes on you. I love hugs." ❤
