I was a young married woman when Elvis passed away. I was at work when someone brought the news in. We all just sat there, looking at each other. The word "shocked" didn't even come close. He was at his very best in this 1968 concert. It's how I like to remember him.
I was also at work when I learned Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash. I stood up and just walked out of my job and quit right there without saying a word.
I have heard others say Elvis did the stanky leg. He started so many things, bling, Cadillacs, entourage, sideburns, pink and black outfits, jumpsuits, and on and on. He changed the whole culture and influenced so many musicians including MJ. Watch the video of E and MJ dancing to "I Gotta Feelin' in My Body". It is a good one.❤❤❤

Elvis was censured for years on live TV . They learned to only film him above the waist lol. But even in 1968 although things had loosened up quite a bit he still had to hold back on the swiveling hips on TV lol
What's crazy the this comeback special the tv station had some very strict restrictions to how much Elvis could move , causing him to make some cray moves sitting down try look at the" one night with you" from the show but they couldn't stop him completely
Elvis' '68 Comeback Special, to be broadcast on NBC, was the first time Elvis was in front of a live audience in seven years. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis's manager, had told the NBC team that he would handle ticket distribution. He assured them that he would recruit ("bus in") fans from across the country to fill the studio. However, by the day of the show, Parker had not distributed the tickets, and only a few people were in line to see the taping. So, producer-director Steve Binder and his team asked people from a nearby Bob's Big Boy restaurant to attend, and also advertised on local radio. For the informal jam session, Elvis, clad in black leather and surrounded by a few hundred, non-paying fans, played with a small group of musicians including guitarist Scotty Moore and percussionist DJ Fontana, who had been members of his 1950s backing band "The Blue Moon Boys."
I have read about Tom Parker not giving the tickets out. I don’t know if it was an act of sabotage because he didn’t agree with something or he couldn’t be bothered. Luckily, Steve Binder made sure there was an audience for filming.
Best to describe Elvis. He had great stage presence. He is one of those performers who could read a phone book or a tech manual. You would be enamored with him.
My mom was born in the 30's..like Elvis...she used to say..he could park his slippers by my bed anyday. My innocent Mom! I was 12 years old and spending the summer at a friend's cottage the summer Elvis died. I remember being in the car and the news came over the radio. Her uncle pulled the car over to the side of the road and cried. I knew then it was big. I'm 60 now and never forgot that summer.
He’s just mesmerizing! As was MJ. Maybe that’s why there are so few of these iconic, legendary ones. I believe their souls are literally, in sync with the music. They seemed to vibrate with it! It was electrifying to watch and we all are like magnets watching em.
After his world-conquering fame in the 1950s and early 1960s, it's fair to say that Elvis's star was on the wane. His manager, "Colonel" Tom Parker, kept Elvis away from live performance for 7 years, and rather than going into the studio to record great albums, Elvis was churning out bad movie soundtracks for even more bad movies. So, it's fair to say that Elvis wasn't all too happy with where he was. He wanted a change, and in 1968, he got it. The clip you watched comes from the legendary 1968 Elvis Comeback TV Special. Btw, unbelievably, "Colonel" Tom Parker originally wanted Elvis to perform without any dialogue, wearing a cardigan sweater like that worn by Perry Como, in front of a fireplace and a Christmas tree, and sing 20 Christmas songs. Thank God this idea was squashed....
Elvis is in 5 music halls of fames, has the best selling christmas album, had many pop number 1 hits, got 3 Grammys for his Gospel, sang semi opera, was named the 14th best country singer of all time and was the king of rock'n roll. He sang everything amazing and always addes his own style to it.
My mom, my aunt and I watched this live. I was 7. Wow - it was amazing. Elvis had a twin brother, Jesse, who died as a child and when she saw him perform,, his mother said it was like he had the energy of two people.
It's hard to believe watching him perform on this special that he thought after he had been in Hollywood making movies for years, people wouldn't want to see him perform live anymore. He was fit and looked great although he said he almost suffocated in that leather outfit. You have to give him the credit due him for paving the way for others. There's a multitude of famous music people who name him as an influence including the Beatles.
Elvis was the first performer to wear all leather in a performance & I guarantee the women loved it ! As far as the sweat I've seen ,in the Hawaii concert, women wipe his sweat off his face with their hands. With nothing but love in their faces.
ELVIS & HIS NERVES: Steve Binder, the producer-director of the special related a little story which took place in the dressing room right before Elvis was due to go on: Elvis was extremely nervous and he told Binder that he didn't know any of the songs, he forgot all the words, & wasn't going out there, & Binder said "I don't care if you walk out, just say hello & then walk off, but you ARE going out." And out he came. You're referring to the song "If I Can Dream" which closed the '68 special & was due to the assassinations of both King & Robert Kennedy -- Kennedy was assassinated as the special was being worked on & close to wrapping up when Binder & Elvis saw the TV news when it happened.
He was very nervous doing that portion of the show. I love the JAM SESSION part of that live performance. He had finished the commitment for the films or almost maybe 1 left or something like that. I also love the version in the movie that he choreographed himself.

The problem is that Romero was never given credit due to some internal strife & most people aren't even aware of him. My dad loved Elvis. My parents saw Jailhouse Rock at the theater on their first date. 15 to 20 years later, my dad called a radio station to answer an Elvis trivia question while home sick from work one day. Because he got the answer right, they wanted him to come down to the radio station with 2 other finalists for a live Elvis trivia quiz show. My dad won and he and my mom won a trip to Memphis and got to tour Graceland. We live in Kansas and had no money for travel, so this was the first and only time my dad got to go. My dad passes away on my birthday a couple years ago from covid. We fot a puppy about a year later and decided to name him Elvis in honor of my dad. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane.
@@michellemorris2888 I adored reading this story! Thank you for sharing and I’m sure your Dad loves the way you chose honor his legacy and pay homage to their Elvis Presley experience.
Elvis was a phenomenon. He was unique, a product of his environment. He did what he felt; he loved what he did, and it showed. He was the ultimate artist and entertainer but also a beautiful soul. He was put on this earth to spread love and tolerance and unite people. He was generous and compassionate, giving to whomever he could-charities, which much of his donations were not publicized; complete strangers he came across, or hearing that they needed help. He felt that his talent was a gift from God, and he did everything he could to give back.
When I was 17 he was on tour and I wanted to go to the concert, but my parents wouldn't allow it. Then he died. Ugh, I was so upset! I was thisclose to seeing him before he passed. I remember him being a generous man. He'd just give a Caddilac away to random people. The King.
Would LOVE for you to react to 1970 live in Vegas Suspicious Minds, Just Pretend and/or Bridge Over Trouble Water. 1973 live in Hawaii... American Trilogy, You Gave Me A Mountain, What Now My Love.
Elvis played a significant role in making the USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor a reality in the 60s. He performed a benefit concert for the memorial fund.
I it was 4 days before my 9th birthday when when Elvis died. The shock that extended to my family was still talking about it eating pizza and then cake on my birthday. My Dad was a country fan but liked Elvis( both were from Mississippi) but I was surprised how many people were emotional about it. The only other person that I can think of that was similar was when Robin Williams died.
THANKS!!!!!! You NEED to watch this video from the movie "Jailhouse Rock" - he choreographed the whole thing!! Elvis at his best !!!!! Michael LOVED Elvis & his moves!!!! Oh and Elvis was one of the most handsome & sexiest man out there!!!! His smile melted hearts & made panties drop everywhere!!!!
@@kbrewski1 After Elvis Presley died on August 16, 1977, the African American newspaper, the Chicago Defender explained that: “When Elvis Presley breathed his last breath and the press hailed him as the ‘King of Rock,’ Ol’ Man River cried out, ‘Naw he ain’t! My friend Chuck Berry is the King of Rock. Presley was merely a Prince who profited from the royal talent of a sovereign ruler vested with tremendous creativity. Had Berry been white, he could have rightly taken [Presley’s] throne and worn his crown well.’”
I fell for Elvis when I was 3. 60 years later still loving him! He could sing anything & his rabbit hole is deep & worth a deep dive. Got his Grammy for Gospel. He was one of those rare singers that sounded as good live as recordings. Recommend Trying to Get to You from the same concert, You Lost That Loving Feeling,& Bridge Over Trouble Water, etc❤❤❤❤❤
He won THREE Gospel Grammy Awards, and one for Lifetime Achievement. The Grammys weren't around during Elvis' groundbreaking years, so, The King of Rock and Roll never won one for Rock and Roll!

This entire concert was incredible. Elvis at his absolute best. You should watch the whole thing. This particular song reminds me of my dad singing about “Spider Murphy” when I was itsy bitsy. 🥰
I was nine years old and I clearly remember watching this on a black and white TV with my entire family. I was youngest of 8 girls. Elvis made over 30 movies. This song was from a movie of the same name. That film clip is very cool as in the beginning of the movie, his character got in a bar fight and was in prison. Fun Fact: Tom Jones and Elvis had Las Vegas residencies at one hotel on rotating weeks. They were good friends. Tom Jones has great Elvis stories and a particularly funny one about that leather suit. It was on the CONAN talk show. Very funny.
I love Elvis! The the singer of Volbeat did some Elvis impersonating just as a fun piece of trivia. You can hear it come through a little in their songs. It's very rock, so it's an interesting contrast.
My favourite singer ever! Simply the best! Most people today don’t know how talented he was. They only know a few of his hits. Some of his less known songs are just as good, if not better than the hits, just because of his amazing vocal ability. His 1970 live version of “Bridge over Troubled Water” is fabulous! He could sing a ballad like no one! He could sing any genre…rock, pop, country, R&B and gospel. (Gospel was his favourite).
There`s many reasons why Elvis was called "The KING OF ROCK N ROLL"! I remember exactly where I was when they came over the Radio and said Elvis had passed. The World stood still that Day! BP, you have to checkout "Kentucky Rain".

I was 5 yrs old crushing on Elvis, sitting next to my mom on the couch watching this when it aired.
Lmfao 🤏, yeah, sure you remember.
Once and always, The King.
Meu preferido ❤❤❤
The love of my life💙
Elvis was and is the best entertainer I have ever heard or seen.
Any of his songs from the 68 comeback Special are great!
and thats live yall!!! what a force!!!
When I was 17 he was on tour and I wanted to go to the concert, but my parents wouldn't allow it. Then he died. Ugh, I was so upset! I was thisclose to seeing him before he passed. I remember him being a generous man. He'd just give a Caddilac away to random people. The King.
Wasn’t he just something ❤❤
King of Rock and the King of Pop.
Suspicious Minds is my ALL time favorite Elvis song.
The King of Music in da haus, yo....whoa, what a guy 🤘🏼💯⚡❤️
I it was 4 days before my 9th birthday when when Elvis died. The shock that extended to my family was still talking about it eating pizza and then cake on my birthday. My Dad was a country fan but liked Elvis( both were from Mississippi) but I was surprised how many people were emotional about it. The only other person that I can think of that was similar was when Robin Williams died.
❤❤❤
Saw The King perform in Pontiac MI in April 77 with my mom and Aunt Bonnie. Remember to this day.
Elvis' appearance at the Silverdome was December 31, 1975/January 1, 1976. That was Elvis' salute to America's Bicentennial.
@@reneleclerc6119 Whichever was his last appearance there. Was pretty sure it had been 77 but mom's passed and I was 9.
ELVIS DIED IN AUGUST 1977. I doubt he was in much shape to perform in that time period. He was an embarrassment at the end.
You get to see some of his dance moves in this video. It’s Very Good!!
Elvis Pressly The King of Rock n' Roll! ♥️
CHUCK BERRY
a title given to him by white America. Elvis recorded about 800 songs, right? Name 80 that were rnr for Elvis to be given the title king of rnr.
@@punkydoodle4774 Thanks for adding this info. I couldn't remember the # & didn't want to give misinformation. Anyhow, I always thought Elvis was not given enough recognition by the Grammys.. possibly out of jealousy..at least that's my theory.
Elvis is an icon and was, is and always be The King. Love your reaction!
This entire concert was incredible. Elvis at his absolute best. You should watch the whole thing. This particular song reminds me of my dad singing about “Spider Murphy” when I was itsy bitsy. 🥰
I had graduated in 77 and working in Alaska when he passed. He opened doors for so many.
This is the image I have in my memory of Elvis ~ Black leather and Handsome ! He was HOT!!!!!
I grew up with this album. The whole thing was great. Includes interaction with the crowd.
Very funny.
I was 8 when Elvis died. I remember it 😭
I love Elvis!
Elvis song “One Night with You” from that same show is great! Enjoy
There`s many reasons why Elvis was called "The KING OF ROCK N ROLL"! I remember exactly where I was when they came over the Radio and said Elvis had passed. The World stood still that Day! BP, you have to checkout "Kentucky Rain".
Here is a question for you. Elvis sang about 800 songs, right? So in order to be crowned king of rnr how many of those songs were rnr? Name 10% of the 800 which is 80.
