  • Bought this May 20th 2015 at my local Sams Club for $220.00 because I was looking for a high end cooler but wanted to save some money. Igloo told me sorry for my luck and to return it and get another one and hope for the best. No discount, no "i'm sorry about out faulty product...nothing...took it back and brought my flashlight to Sams and the first three I put my light in rendered the same results. So I got my money back and bought the 50 qt brute box.

    Thank you for posting this. Returned my Sportsman 20 right after viewing as it had the exact same issue in a slightly different spot when I did your test. All the other ones at Sams had the same issue, yup, I took a flashlight into Sams club and stood in the aisle and looked through them all. Igloo Sportsman 55's and 20's. Found a deal on an Engel 25 and am waiting for that to show up.
    On another note, the guy with the Yeti 65, I think you are supposed to pre-cool all items (including the cooler) to expect any long term storage in any cooler...which I know most people, including myself, will never do. Also, 2 bags of ice does not go very far in a cooler that large. I have a knockoff (out of business) brand, IceKool 55 and 95, I can get a solid 7 days out of them with a half ice/half stuff ratio in 90 deg weather...but I also completely nerd out with a separate smaller cooler to use through the day and then just open and refill the small cooler out of a larger cooler to conserve the ice. I know, most people do not need to store anything in a cooler that long so it is not cost effective for them. The main issue for me is that I hate coolers with broken lids so this type of cooler is awesome for not breaking off a lid.

    I just purchased a sportsman 55 from igloo's website. I had to test it and everything looks great no light leakage. The funny thing is that there a few minor scuffs in the inside of the cooler... maybe from someone throwing flashlight in it! It looks like igloo might be doing the flashlight test in there QC dept.

    Wow.... I never would've thought to do that. That is a clever test.

    Nice work on the flashlight! I called about the separation of the insulation and the holes on the bottom exposing the yellow insulation that would allow water to get into the cooler and break down the insulation. They said the same thing. They really didn't care. I did purchase the igloo over Christmas this year. I think they had a bad batch go out. The one I have now is awesome. Holds ice longer than the Yeti on the back of my boat in direct sun. Days get to 120 out here.
    Thanks for sharing!

    Great test, I just did mine and it's perfect. Paid 199 bucks at Sams and here's a tip. If you want the ice to last longer then prechill the cooler like it says in the instructions. Also a bunch of frozen water bottles help your cold food stay cold longer.

    Haha.. I'm going to have to try that with my 65q yeti. Don't get me wrong I love my yeti and how i can throw it around. But for 400 bucks I would think it would hold ice better. Took it to the deer lease this weekend temp in the high 80 to low 90 in TEXAS . Put case half water, 6 pck beer and couple Gatorade and 2 bags ice on Friday around 330. Come 9 am sat morning no ice left. 10 days my ass must not have tested there Texas made cooler in a Texas summer. The longest I ever got was 3 days inside my house in March.

    Great test and great idea. I would be willing to bet all makers of coolers have a lemon here and there though.

    I just did this test with 2 LED maglites with focused beam (extremely bright). Not even a hint of light leakage. Mine is solid. Not surprised though because the cooler keeps ice for days on end.

    I have an Igloo Sportsman 20 and 55 and checked them in store before purchase, and the only spot you can see a bit of light is on the back of the hinge where the top meets the bottom on the 20qt. It still holds ice stupidly longer than my other cheap coolers. But yeah, check them out before purchase I suppose.

    I did this test with my RTIC 20 I received yesterday. I put a small LED flashlight in it and all four walls glowed.

    My Grizzly 40 does this if I hold a powerful light inside flat next to the walls. Its olive drab green too, which is dark and you can still see it.
    I wonder if it has any insulation or much if at all. Good test.

    this is an eye opening test indeed, im curious to see the same test on the expensive coolers...the cooler market is messed up, does not seem to be any middle grade coolers...just sub $100 cheapies and then the $300-400+ high dollar models

    igloo should watch your video,,,i worked there as a maintenance tech for 12 years. typical

  • @jimmycrandell8230
    @jimmycrandell8230 8 років тому

    I think it all depends on how many lumens your lights is just because you get a glow through it doesmt.mean there is no insulation

    Why do so many want "free stuff" because they have to return? This entitlement mentality is lame. To many people want to feel "outraged" over such trivial matters. Go ahead and spend $350 or more for a cooler that could just as likely have a small defect in construction somewhere. Reality eludes way to many in America!

    • @johndoee4511
      @johndoee4511 7 років тому

      I'd rather just take a flashlight and test it in the store to support a made in USA product than over priced china yeti.
