Hmm. I read that they changed the engine within 48 hours after flying one in.
Is that standard procedure, or is it just easier to fly in an engine and change it if they don't have any maintenance crew available on the location that can check the engine fully?

+Descorath I really don't know how this operates or Delta Airlines operates. Normally, airlines have alliances so if they divert to an airport where an alliance has maintenance, that alliance covers the airline. In this case, I don't really know how they proceeded.

I would guess its less time consuming to just change it rather than fault check it (if you have to open the internals). But then again I have heard several cases where birdstikes to the engine was just checked fast and then the plane took of within the same day.
Guess we will never know without more information.

+Descorath I know Delta has their own maintenance facility up in Atlanta, which also serves as their hub. From what I've seen and been told, most planes undergo maintenance there. In cases of unscheduled maintenance like this, where the plane is elsewhere, it makes more sense to simply replace the engine. The airport may not have the required facilities to inspect, assess and repair the damage.
If they do, it will cost the airline a lot more than flying in a spare engine, replacing it, and then getting it checked out at their own maintenance. Delta also has specific planes (ERJ? not sure) that are on standby to fly out and deliver replacement parts somewhere.
