- A departure procedure is like a preplanned playbook of how to get from takeoff and initial climb, to the enroute portion of an IFR flight. We'll look at Standard Departure Procedures (SIDs) of which there are 3 kinds (Radar, RNAV, and Hybrid), Obstacle Departure Procedures (ODPs), and some other instrument departures.

Nice to see a more advanced SID clip presented very well. If I may: at 6:44 you intended to view 01L, but showed 28LR and at 13:45 you ment to say 250 Ft/Nm, but said 200. Thanks for all your time and effort in this.

There is a short formula to convert Ground Speed Climb Gradient to Rate of Climb: RC = GS /60 x CG (E.g: 120 / 60 x 250 = 500 '/min).

I just discovered your terrific videos. I'm an instrument rated private pilot but I haven't flown in years due to a medical condition. I still find these videos very interesting. They are very well produced and a fantastic resource for flight training.
I really got a kick out of the TRUKN TWO departure procedure for SFO, with it's TRUKN, TYDYE, GRTFL, DEDHD, HYPEE and COSMC intersections. Must be some Deadheads in the FAA charting office with a sense of humor. Very appropriate for San Francisco!😊

Oh my God! Your training content and style is sooo far ahead of everything else out there it is - in a way - sad. There is just no comparison. Every time I watch a video I learn so much that I thought I already knew. The are just two things I don't like about it:
1) I want more, I am getting addicted... you just have to have more videos about everything IFR.
2) I just want to give you more money. How do I make sure I keep you going and happy?

Enjoying the videos while I work towards my instrument rating! I was thinking about a series of videos that really helped me for my PPL from another channel called The ACS Library who runs through the ACS on things that comes up during the oral and checkride. It’d be really cool if you had a series like that for Instrument that covers the ACS procedure testing. Just a suggestion. Keep up the awesome videos!

I love your videos! I am so confused with instrument and the videos have really helped clear up some of the confusion. I am wondering - I am trying to find a Faa resource discussing the types of SIDS talked about and am having a hard time… are these three types derived from plates or is there something I am missing?
Interesting to see how different FAA rules compared to EASA. I am 5 hours from my IR rating and haven't heard 80% of this :D We only have SIDs and STARs. :D
60% of EASA IR course is just water(unnesserey information) which pilots will never use in the future, especially ATP course.

Hello, if you have the Garmin set up are pilots still using a full Foreflight subscription? Is it really worth it since it seems like the Garmin does it all as well.

I actually only ever flew out of HPN a couple times. Too big and busy for a country pilot but it's a great way to see NYC.
Did no one notice when on the RNAV SID (6:40) said "let's do the 1R Departure with SYRAH transition" but the airplane flew the 28L/R departure?
where do you find all these maps for the different airports?
AirNav has plates for all US airports.
Can you do this same video but using Fresno Yosemite Airport (KFAT) I would really appreciate it.

Gosh, I just found this channel, it’s fantastic. I have the sportys IFR course and I like your videos much better. It’s easier to stay focused maybe because of your phrasing and pauses. Sportys talks really fast and it’s easy to fall asleep… not yours!
Nice video's, and in the Clearance instructions it says you are cleared to "KASE", but you only write ASE. Is there some kind of unwritten rule that you only put down the last 3 since you know where you are going, or was that a mistake?
Most airports on the mainland USA starts with a K. Controllers often speak very fast when reading out your clearance so you'll probably not be able to write everything and keep up. Dropping the "K" saves the time of writing it.
I live in Hawaii so all airports start with a P, not K, and I never write the P down either, for what that's worth.
When I'm about to copy a clearance I'll write down everything I already know in advance. If ATC gives me something I don't expect, I'll line through what I previously wrote and copy down what they say, but if I'm given what I expected, I just saved a bit of time by having it already written.
If it's a route you're familiar with, you can really shorten it up. For example, I live on the Big Island, Hawaii and I frequently fly from Hilo (PHTO) to Honolulu (PHNL) and back. My clearance from Hilo to Honolulu will usually be "Cleared to the Honolulu Airport via Victor twenty-two, OKALA, Victor sixteen, UPOLU, Victor twenty-three, Victor seven, Lanai, Julle Five arrival, climb and maintain one zero thousand, expect one-four thousand in ten minutes, departure frequency one-one-nine-point-seven, squawk two-two-three-six."
I can't write as fast as some people and I know this route well so my notes I scribble down will look like this:

R V22 O 16 U 23 7 L J5
A 10 ^ 14 / 10
F 19.7
T 2236
I'll read back, "Cleared Honolulu, Victor 22, Okala, Victor 16 Upolu, Victor 23, Victor 7, Lanai, Julle 5, 1-0 thousand, 1-4 in 10, 19.7, 2236 on the squawk."
As long as you can figure out your own shorthand, it doesn't matter how you write it.
I’m actually a bit confused in regards to the climb chart. You state @90kts to climb 200ft/nm we should climb 380ft but highlight the 250ft/nm on the column. Not sure if something is not clicking.
i hate to ask but i've always been confused by whether or not i need to delete the destination airport after i've entered the departure or approach. i feel like i was taught to do this at some point, so the airplane knows that it doesn't go to the destination airport first, but maybe the procedure is to just activate the departure in the run-up? would be grateful for clarification.
I have a question, what if my airport has no SID? What's the procedure to take off then?
