- Video including two footplate rides of GWR & BR(W) tank engines at work on preserved railways and the Metropolitan in Britain. Classes include 14xx, 57xx, 15xx, 45xx & 5101. Video was taken on the East Somerset, West Somerset and Severn Valley Railways between 1992 & 2000. Dramatic sound as 1450 storms up the bank from Mendip Vale and sets a number of lineside fires and as 4144 makes a speedy departure with slipping from Rickmansworth.
As a young boy in the fifties I rode footplate on one from Churston to Brixham and returned in the Push-Pull coach cab; that was magic.
As ex steam fireman/ driver enjoyed the video on Great Western Railway engines, brought back some good memories.
Thanks so much.....Ray Williams.
+Ramon Williams Glad you enjoyed the video. As a schoolboy Cardiff Canton sheds were a magnet!
I'm old enough to remember when a 1400 class operated between Cholsey and Moulsford and the Wallingford branch line
The 45xx locomotives are a personal favorite of mine. Nice video!
Thank you. I like the 14xx locos!

God I wish steam engines where still a thing I want to be a driver
Heritage lines are always looking for steam drivers and firemen.

14XX no 1450 (the one that appears in the video) also appeared in The Goodies episode "Daytime Robbery on the Orient Express" . H
How do some of these work without the cylinders near the front? Like Thomas?
The cylinder or the valve gear was underneath the locomotive
Oliver and Montague ❤️
Definitely Oliver.
hi duck and oliver
Agreat collection, but EX-GWR would be more appropriate. The GWR closed in 1948 and the lamps were red not white.
Very reminiscent of an E2
@Man With 9000 IQ I'm talking about the E2 tank engines?
@Man With 9000 IQ And that they look similar
@Man With 9000 IQ Dude calm down. The designs of some of them look SIMILAR to the E2.
@Man With 9000 IQ I understand where you are coming from. I apologize if I angered you.
I would love to be a steam engine driver but unfortunately I'm a girl.
Try a heritage railway. There are several women driving and firing preserved locos and also on narrow gauge lines. Pictures on UA-cam.
@@christopherbarton6770 if I lived by one I would try
