COMMON QUESTIONS? "How do I know what bin the item is in?" Answer: custom sku. It's in the item details section. If you dont see it, google "how to turn on seller hub on ebay". Once you log in to seller hub, the custom sku option will be in our new listings. Anything you type in there will show up when the item sells. You put an item into the "B" bin and type "B" in the custom sku field. The thing sells and you see "B", you know it's in the B bin. "Where do you get the golf club boxes?" Answer: eBay or a local supplier. 48x5x5. "How do you decide to do free shipping or calculated shipping?" Answer: it doesn't matter. If we want to do free shipping, we add the average cost to ship the item into the total price. For example, shoes cost about $10 to ship on average, so selling a pair for $30 plus shipping is the same as selling them for $40 free shipping. "What printer do you use?" Answer: rollo. But you can use any printer you want. We have a whole video about the Rollo printer. Just search "hairy tornado Rollo". "How do you know what the package weight and dimensions are if you don't pack the item until after it sells?" Answer: we've shipped thousands of items so we are pretty good at guessing the total weight and dimensions of an item without having to package it up. I would recommend weighing the item by itself and then adding a little extra weight to account for the box you'll need to use, and then use that weight.
Ever buy things in bulk? Even alibaba.. feel like to make a living buying individual things is time consuming and you'll limit how much you can make.. do you sell Amazon
Not sure if this helps anyone but when I put in my custom “SKU #” I add in what I paid for the item as a reminder. For instance “A-1” in the “a” bin and paid $1. Sometimes it’s easier to see it in your sku as a reminder for when u lower a price you remember what you have into the item ❤️
I put the bin number, the code for where I bought it and the price. So if I bought something for $4 at a yard sale and put it in the media bin it would be M1-YS0400
I have a friend that has worked for the Post Office for over 20 years. She told me recently when you ship a package make sure it can sustain a 5 foot drop onto a conveyor belt. So I make sure no matter what I ship it will survive that 5 foot fall with packages below it and above it so that I don’t have any breakages. I always wrap glass with padding below and above and I always stuff the glass itself with paper to help protect it . Interesting video, even after 20 years I can always learn something new so I appreciate these types of videos !!
I recycle 99.9999% of my boxes, saves me a lot. I slap a sticker that says "don't judge a box by its cover... we loving recycle our packing materials" and honestly people have given me awesome reviews for recycling boxes, never had a complaint. I don't reuse food boxes food allergies are a thing. :)
@@TheEclecticElement I do the same and have made a rubber stamp that says 99.9% recycled .. .Im sure you can find a place online to print labels for very little.... maybe Vistaprint?
Dumb question: do you say in your listing that it’ll come in a recycled box or do you just slap the “don’t judge a box by its cover” sticker on it? I love that you get awesome reviews because of that.
@@lorraine5257 not dumb at all! I don’t mention using recycled packaging materials in my listing. Another super cost saving tip I can pass along… if you have any auto body garages around you, ask if they will save their bubble wrap for you. A lot of large vehicle body pieces (like bumpers) get delivered in bubble wrap. Most of the time it’s clean. Hunting for and salvaging packing materials is almost as fun as sourcing (almost😂)
Thank you for making this video. I get questioned about shipping all the time from family and friends, being one of the most intimidating part of reselling for newbies. Now I have a video I can just send them to watch to answer most of their questions. Plus you might get more subs because of it, being one of the best UA-cam resellers I know. Keep up the great work and thanks for always being available to answer whatever questions we have from time to time. I hope that I can personally thank you and your lovely wife in person one day.
Hope I found a nugget or two of useful info? Heck if I listed all the nuggets I came away with were real gold, I'd be the new star of Gold Rush ;-)back near the beginning is probably. Here's a little nugget back ...the glass mug you shipped probably has enough damping factor due to the glass thickness not to worry about it, but for thinner glass, such as a wine glass or fancy goblet, breaking often occurs because blow such as dropping causes the glass to resonate (vibrate) at a critical frequency ... exactly what happens when you see the stage trick of an opera's singer's voice shattering a glass. To reduce this hazard, put some crumpled paper or cardboard _inside_ the mouth of the glass to dampen any harmonic vibrations. That's your physics lesson for today ;-)
Im going to piggy back in this.. I agree with this, Dave! I have lost 3 vintage / one of a kind items due to the seller skimping on the box size and not adding enough cushion- items were crushed from impact of other boxes.! I ended up with refunds, the sellers lost out, and now I have disappointment and damaged goods. :( The 7th grade science experiment of dropping the ( protected) egg from a third story window applies here. Always treat your breakable items like the egg! The shipping companies are rough with the boxes!! Thanks for all of the great advice on your channel!
I use almost all recycled shipping materials. I just ask people to save their shipping boxes and bubble wrap for me. I ask for tape for Christmas, or I buy it at our local Menards when they have it on sale plus 11% off. I'm that kinda gal you know... love the videos!
Reusing materials saves so much cost and allows friends and family to support you. I have a great source for bubble wrap and boxes and even padded envelopes for 1st class and media mail items. The dollar tree will give you free boxes..just ask! I get tape and poly mailers with my ebay store quarterly credit.
Same here. And if you buy the 8 pack of clasp envelopes from dollar general. They are just one dollar. Family Dollar has 6 for a dollar as well. Great for smaller items. Just wrap items in bubble wrap or paper and tape clasp area.
Great video! I've been a reseller for almost 9 years and it's still fun to see how other resellers package and ship their items. It was a treat to see both you and Hayley share this part of the business (both on packaging duties and youtube commentary). Thank you for bringing back the TRICK SHOT! I can't tell you how much that goofy entertainment meant during lock down. That's what hooked me on your channel and I've been watching ever since!
Thank you for explaining every step of this process. It took me over a year to understand the full process of reselling. Its important to understand the numbers before reselling. Its not cut and dry. You guys are fantastic at what you do, and I still continue to strive to be where you guys are at. Never change.
I absolutely love Haley's smile at the beginning. Now that she's working from home she just beams excitement and happiness! You guys did AWESOME in your sales and I really appreciate the shipping walk through on each one. Here's to continued success for you guys and all the resellers in Q4 :)
Thank you for the tips. I like to recycle packing boxes and supplies. It saves money, keeps a lot out of the landfill and allows family and friends to be involved. Doesn’t look as nice but I haven’t had any complaints! Looks like you two are having a blast working together, love it!!
I love the long videos, more would be good. I like to watch them while I photograph stuff and it’s nice not having to find a new video during. Also, I’ve been in clothing for a while but recently started dabbling in hard goods especially after finding your channel. The only issue now is that I’ve watched almost all of the older ones now, so I have to actually wait for new ones. I didn’t realize just how much ‘random’ things seem to sell, and it opened my eyes to checking out those little things at the thrift I would have skipped over before.
We had a 17 year old cat that was super mellow with shipping and packing and listing and taking pictures - just like Mose is. We now have a kitten who is in the middle of everything all the time. Such a huge difference. Adds a new challenge to every aspect of being a reseller.
As someone who is just starting out selling/reselling goods online I found this extremely insightful! I'm beyond happy that I stumbled upon your channel because I learn something new with every video. Keep up the great work!
If you want to "reuse" a box for shipping, and don't want to cross off or remove old labels and such. Simply find the seam where it's glued together. Use a dull butter knife to separate the glued seam. Turn the box inside out, and either re-glue or tape the box back together. And Presto, you have a nice new box on the outside.
Just want to say I've been binge watching all of your videos and I have to say, yours are the most helpful, informative and beneficial. I've always been a bit of a part time hobby seller and did things off the cuff on the fly. But having deeper knowledge has enriched my reseller experience. And I like the fact that you have reminded people to not let other things lapse in our daily lives when caught up in the frenzy of day to day reseller activities. Thanks to you both. Well done!!
I really see no purpose in doing that. You’re protecting the item from external forces. If a damaging impact is strong enough to get by the external padding, no amount of fill inside the mug/glass itself will save it. The only time I would agree to fill the interior of a container is if you also have small objects in the box that might rattle around. Like a blender blade, pack the pitcher enough so the blade stays in place.
This is an awesome video! Please do these shipping videos like once a month. It will show how you ship throughout the year. This was VERY helpful! Thanks!
Since you don't know the exact weight and size of box until you ship, what do you put in the listing? Do you use calc shipping or flat rate in the listing? An idea for a video - What is your stores sell thru rate? How do you handle items that have not sold in a while? Do you lower prices when items relist?
This all depends on the item. For my ebay selling, I typically do free shipping for all first class items and factor all shipping locations into the cost, as it won't make a huge difference regardless of where it goes. If it's a heavier item or odd sized that I know is going priority or other shipping method, I will weigh the item itself prior to listing and charge a rate to the buyer just based on the item weight. Typically if it's really big and heavy, Fedex or UPS is the way to go. Then when it's time to ship, you can get creative/fiddle with saving money whether that's cutting box weight or using Priority A box or what have you. In short, there's not always a way to list that's the guaranteed best shipping rate for a buyer, but there's ways to list so you won't screw yourself in shipping cost.
@@ltdan8671 the USPS has regular priority boxes? I thought all they had was Priority Flat Rate boxes? Still trying to find where we can even get free boxes other than recycling.
For shipping, I let it calculate by itself which has not failed me, but I’ve been selling for along time so you’ll get to a point when you know what box you need, weight and shipping cost will be (ball park). they are using a scale which I do sometimes on large item or more then one pair of shoes. I set my items up to re-list by themselves and almost never lower the price on items. It will randomly sell at the price that your asking. You’ll be surprised like I am.
Learned so much, thank you! I saved it to watch again later. I just sold very first item a couple of days ago, made $35. I'm so excited to finally be "open for business" and you, Haley and Mose have definitely been a huge help and influence on me. I'm on Facebook Marketplace, Bonanza and Mercari, working on setting up Ebay, and I have a box of books started to send to Amazon. Again, thank you!!!!!!
the shipping prices in the US are so crazy. we are lucky here in the UK as it does not matter where in the UK it is shipped to its only priced on weight. great video guys as always.
Just wanted to say thank you for all the informative video's. I wanted to let you know that you can't use motor oil boxes for shipping, as well as the liquor boxes. I had a motor oil box returned and USPS stated that the reason was because these packages board flights with passengers and it may create a problem for those watching packages boarding the plane. I also wanted to let you know that the best item you can use for cleaning shoes is Shout Gel. Spray the shoes, including the bottoms and let set for a couple of hours. Then wash in the washer with other items and they will come out so clean, you will be amazed. Just the "gel" form of shout only. I think you can pick these up at Target. Thanks again and God bless. Kelli
Y'all inspired me to start selling on ebay and thrifting again...cannot thank you enough! Love watching you both, learn something new every time I watch. Bless you both, 🙏 and much love!
I like your channel, but I have an issue with one shipping detail you mentioned. As a buyer, there's no gray area at all, for me, when it comes to priority mail vs any other method. Especially if I'm expecting/paid for priority and we didn't discuss it first. They are handled very differently in some cases, including mine where I have two post offices involved in every package delivery. Priority, ~95% they'll hand it off the same day they get it, and I'll receive it on time. Anything else, it may sit at the first office for an extra day/over the weekend. And depending on where it ships from, it may have taken an extra day or two to get there in the first place. So yeah, if I pay for and am expecting 1-2 days and you ship it in a way that takes me 4-7 days to get it, I'll definitely have an issue with that. Sometimes a purchase decision is made based on which seller can get it to me the quickest, even if it costs a few dollars more.
Yup, and it's not just that. It will ultimately hurt the seller. If you list it Priority 2-3 days, but then change the shipping label after the sale to a slower and cheaper 7+ day delivery, then it will be a ding on your shipping time (as a seller). Ebay has this weird cassini algorithm, where as a seller, it literally wants you to do everything perfect and the more you do, the more it will reward you, as a seller.
In the last 2 years, 10,000 transaction or so on ebay I had exactly 2 customers select anything faster than the cheapest shipping I had listed. It is so rare that I could easily just miss it it if came up again.
I've had things that I had listed accidentally as Priority, that were under 1 pound. I've never had a complaint. At the most, first class should be 1 day slower. Sometimes first class is faster than priority, because they take different routes. Now, everything I have is packed the same day, and ships that day or in the morning...... Generally the packages arrive sooner than eBay estimates, because they are figuring in the 2 - 3 days that a lot of people take to ship.
@@tomw.4255 ... I ship thousands of orders a year. A lot to the West coast (I'm in Ohio). First class and priority take about the same time. "Priority mail" is just marketing hype, it is what used to be "Parcel post". The only time there is a real difference, is the Priority packages are loaded into the trailer first. If they run out of room in the last trailer, the first class packages wait till the next day.
@@jasonsprouse2803 Nothing but respect, man. Very interesting to see the different commentary on this. You're definitely doing heavier volume than I ever did and it's interesting to read up on your knowledge. It's all so damn confusing for at least the first year and I think sometimes people just stick to what works for them. Who knows.. Keep kicking butt on the sales ya'll!
I still feel the key to running a ebay business full-time you need to learn shipping, pricing & the trend of product that sales. I never dreamed of doing this full-time until I started my retirement & my company insurance. The next advice is to keep your operation cost low.
Good luck. Shipping is easy . Just make sure you have a good scale. And ebay has a good discount on shipping.and make sure you put good description on your listing cause customers will find the smallest error on the listing and use that against you lol.
I bought my first several items from Goodwill yesterday. Getting everything cleaned up and listed today. Your videos, along with Osborne2Thrift, gave me a lot of knowledge and inspiration that maybe I can do this too.
Do I plan on becoming a reseller? No. But do I enjoy watching a YTer explaining how to become one? Yes. If I ever do start selling on eBay, I now have the powerful knowledge to know exactly how to ship different items...
I've u sed all my pool noodles. The foam covering to wrap around pipes to protect against the cold work well also. Maybe can find some inexpensive ones. I can't believe I didn't get enough from the dollar tree before they ran out!
Hi Josh, your information about shipping and printing labels from Ebay was amazing. I've only sold a couple items but I didn't know you could buy postage through Ebay and I was using a kitchen scale to weigh my packages and standing in line at the post office. Of course I was also paying retail through USPS for shipping. Thank you for being so honest with your content and talking about all aspects of your business, especially the shipping and tax stuff. Your are amazing and God will keep blessing you because you are so freely sharing your talents and knowledge. God bless!
I’m sure it just comes with experience but do you have any tips on how to price for shipping when starting out? Also what helps you determine when to offer free shipping or not? Love your content by the way, your videos made me realize there is money in items I would normally pass up and I think that is awesome.
When I list something I always weigh it and put that weight in the custom sku (along with location info). I decide then what kind of mailer or box it can best go into. If it can go first class in a polybag I'll add 2 oz to the item weight. If it has to go in a box, add the weight of the box plus 2 oz to the item weight. I sell alot of glass and I'll add 1.5 to 2 pounds to the item weight to account for the box weight and packing materials. I know how much all my boxes weigh. I'm seldom wrong.
invest in a little shipping scale from amazon... I believe Josh and Haley have the one they use under their Amazon list linked in the description. When I first started I weighed and measured boxes for every item I listed until I got the hang of it. Made some COSTLY mistakes by guesstimating before knowing what I was doing. Best of luck!!
Pack and weigh the item, then visit the USPS website’s postage calculator (I’d link it, but seems UA-cam thinks I’m posting spam.) Plug in the numbers and you’ll get the postage on the item. After a while you’ll get to where you can just weigh the item alone and make a good guess on what the postage will be. And no need to rush out and buy a new scale. If you thrift, keep an eye out for a kitchen scale. They usually have a 5 pound limit which is more than enough for most things. If you have the odd item that weighs more, bathroom scale.
Interesting to see how other resellers ship their goods. Tip: for any Priority Box that is NOT flat rate: You can use two boxes together. Example: for the long Priority Triangle boxes for shipping your golf clubs: Take two of the boxes and cut one end off of each box and push on open end into the other boxes open end and tape it up really good. Now you can ship your longer clubs in a Free Priority Box. Saw this tip on another UA-cam video. Love your dog by the way!
I'm sure you already know about them but Regional Rate boxes are amazing for shipping bulky items. They come in a couple sizes and the A boxes are always cheaper than medium priority and if the delivery is close they can be cheaper than padded envelopes
After watching this channel for a few weeks, today I made an eBay account and listed my first items on eBay from things I had around the house. The part that worried me the most was the shipping. I searched for videos about shipping and found a few that showed materials but no actual examples. I was literally thinking about delisting my items when this video popped up. This video helped a lot! You get a like and a subscribe from me.
Go get it! Lindey Glenn has some great shipping videos as well. There's actually a lot to learn in this business (like any business). Some just want extra money for fun others want a new career.
A few questions: 1) do you ever use the pirateship “box in a bag” feature for priority shipping? 2) where do you get your golf club boxes? (Not the usps tube box)
I came across your channel about a week ago and absolutely love it! I’m currently binge watching your UA-cam videos! LOL I grew up going to the local flea market with my parents and those trips are some of the best childhood memories!
Once I sold a huge Minnie mouse plush to someone in California. I squished it into a large box with my husband supplying some man power so I could actually tape the box shut. Then I went to print the label and found out it would be like forty bucks to send in that box. So, I had to take it out and squished it inside an even smaller box and that got the shipping price to about half what it had been in the other box. I wouldn't be at all surprised if when the customer opened the box, Minnie popped out like a jack in the box! One would think this would teach me to make sure the box I have will ship for a good price before I tape it up . . . But I always forget!😀
Only thing I might hope to add is that with first class the price changes at 4 oz increments. So a 10oz package costs the same as a 12 oz. So if you weigh it just remember you can just use 4, 8, 12, 1lb for first class. Hope that makes sense:)
Do you really need to round up to the next pound for priority? I hadn’t heard that before and have always (not a lot of experience) just put in the actual weight in the shipping calculator.
@Joy Duncan Lol yeah I've been doing eBay for yearsssss & literally just learned this! (guess you can teach an old dog new tricks!) So from 2.1 lbs to 3.0lbs flat it's the same price..I've been putting exact weight in as well!! That ends today!🤣🤣🤣
@retrobydestiny Great nugget of info about the breaks in weight/costs for first class shipping. I learned this from another video and this has helped me to save money by keeping the weight from jumping up into the next price class when possible.
As always very enlightening and informative. Even as a reseller for almost a decade I’m still amazed at What I can learn and what I can pass on. Love you guys so much
I honestly appreciate the time & effort for these kinds of videos for people like me/us who are curious on how this operation worked to learn.👍🏾💯 Thank you both for this video & I’m always supporting y’all 💯🙏😎
My thank you is the packing slip with a personal message as well as a thank you sticker. I fold them in half with the printing and sticker nicely displayed on top, then sealed. In clear bags I put it right in the bag and make sure it is visible when they open the package.
When listing an item and having the buyer pay calculated shipping do you have to put the dimensions of the box in the listing? How does eBay charge the buyer the correct amount if it doesn’t know the size and weight. I just started selling on eBay. Thanks!
ebay charges the buyer for whatever you put in, so it's important to be fairly accurate when you list the item. We just guess and 99% of the time it's fine. But we have shipped thousands of items and have a pretty good idea of how something will ship when we see it.
I found that using calculated shipping really hurt my sales. The calculated shipping is usually way higher than the actual cost even if you put the info in correct. For clothes I just do a flat rate of like $6.00 for under a pound and $9.50 or $10.00 for over a pound. Sometimes you lose money if you have to ship really far away, but usually you can find a flat rate shipping option, like a flat rate envelope. You do pay ebay fees on the shipping, don't forget that.
Mose is doing a fantastic job keeping all your shipping safe. He is really working hard. Haley is really doing great with her part of YouTubing as well. She has really become an awesome addition to the business!!! I remember when we hardly ever saw her when she worked away from home and now she can make videos by herself!!!
When you list something, you have to enter the weight + dimensions + shipping method. eBay calculates shipping based on that. I usually make a guess on dimensions and add a little to the weight of the item to account for the box weight when I pack. It's usually accurate to within a dollar or so.
custom sku.
@@HairyTornado 99% of the time going over 16oz usps let's it go. For example 1 pound 2 Oz you can still get way with this. No need to be so politically correct.
I not only put my item number on it but I put the price I paid for it. That way when someone makes me an offer I can just go in and see the price if I’m out and about and know if its an offer I should accept or not. I’ll also put any special notes for shipping like it will be priority or in a flat rate box. I like to box my items up before I ship them so I know exactly what shipping will cost so it doesn’t come back to bite me in the butt later on since a lot of my items can go either first class or priority.
@@alexzman85 Not saying you're wrong but I wouldn't risk it. I've had an item returned saying it was over 1 pound but it wasn't it was just a screw up from USPS when they scanned it I'm assuming.
Great video. Been selling a little over a year and need this kind of shipping tutorial so I can feel comfortable selling other items. Make more of these please - at least scattered throughout your channel offerings. TFS
Don't forget about the Regional Rate boxes. A Regional A is about the same size as a medium, a Regional B is about the same size as a large. Depending on distance, these Regional Rate boxes are often cheaper than shipping by weight once you hit 2 pounds (and realistically nothing ships at 1 pound, which would be .006 ounces over first class, which tops out at 16.994 ounces). Regional Rate boxes are not stocked at PO's, you have to order them online.
That was a good video young man! Question: When you charge for shipping, how do you set the price if you don't know where it's going? Thanks for all you guys do!
It helps to buy a scale. Then you decide what shipping supplies you'll need such as envelop or box size. All books ad dvds and cds fall under media mail. The rest pretty much priority. But all items should offer 2 ways to ship such as priority, first class etc.
@@jonblablabla1014 Ebay calculates the shipping once you put in the weight and dimensions of the item. If it's more than 14 ounces it can't go as first class or maybe under 1 pound but anything heavier will need to go as priority. Books are under media mail so if it's 2 pounds it can ship as media or priority. Most items that are in the ounces can go first class. Also there's flat rate envelops that you can get from the post office padded and non padded that offers a set price but your item must fit into those sizes. It's pretty easy once you know the shipping methods
@@benijen oh wow well thanks for the info. Honestly I have no idea what I would sell.... probably clothes, books, maybe some fragrances. I think it's really an issue of me procrastinating and just not buying the supplies I need (scale, polybags, label printer, tape, bubblewrap, ) I'm just not sure why I feel so discouraged and doubtful!!
Thank you so much for this video I truly appreciate it from the bottom of my heart! I have watched your videos for the last 3 to 4 months and it has gotten me inspired to do what I used to love doing, Reselling! I Finally started back on eBay about a week ago but I was very stressed out, because I didn’t understand the packaging and shipping process. This video has helped me so much I have watched it over and over thank you again! you and your wife are awesome
Great trick shot!! I loved it when you were doing those in the lock down time. It made me smile every time - this was no exception!! Great video, helpful for many.
That feeling you get when something you just listed, sells within hours (or less.)... ugh, I hate that! I use to think cool... now I realize that usually means I listed way too low! Great content guys! 👌 I always point new resellers to your channel!
I sold and shipped vintage glass on ebay for 12 years and never had a single thing break. FedEx recommends 4 inches between the outside of your bubble wrap and the box and it works. I used crumpled paper because packing peanuts are not eco friendly and they shift around too much.
First time viewer here. Was an extremely informative video. Thank you so much. I'm about to try a bit of online selling and found this so so helpful. Will be checking out more of your videos. Cheers!
One of the better shipping vids I’ve seen. One comment on cutting down boxes, like the shoebox for the vest. You showed cutting down from the outside, but I think it’s better to cut up from the inside. Go in with the blade pointing up and out, push the blade out in the corner, as low as you want and slice up and away from the product. A lot less chance of cutting the product, the clear plastic bag or outer factory Saran Wrap accidentally. You can also better gauge where to cut, since the blade is inside right next to the product.
Hey guys! I just started reselling this month, and your videos are so helpful! I had a question for you - do you typically do Buy it Now or Auction for your listings? And-I know this is hard because there’s so much variety-but on average, how long does it take an item to sell on eBay, and how long do you wait before you lower the price of an item?
Buy it now is the way to go. You won't get as much through auction. How long do I typically wait depends on the item, remember to look at the sold filter so that you can get an idea if it's an item worth getting.
I recycle all bubble mailers, boxes, bubble wrap, etc. And I use the newspaper type junk mailings I get to wrap stuff. Clasp envelopes are a super affordable way to ship things. Just wrap items thoroughly and tape over clasp area. You can usually get the small ones, 8 for a buck, larger ones 6 to 8 of them for 2 bucks.
Hello I am a reseller in Redmond Oregon. 82 years old I learn lots from you even though I have been selling a lot longer than you. Today I took my items to the post office to ship. I had one item that was a ceramic" Figurine", box was 10 x 10 x 16. I shipped cubic rate all across the country. I put the free stickers you get from the post office on the package thinking they would go a little softer on the delivery. My Shipping cost was $12.00 for the item. However with the stickers on the package I was told It would be an additional $12.40 to ship with the stickers on. Never knew this maybe you could pass it on to your Viewers. Thanks Art Smith
Mr & Ms Tornado Awesome content as always. I am expecting to record my first video this week. So, you were talking about boxes and where to get them. I can tell you I work for a amazon site and have alot of supplies shipped to me here. I am allowed to take all my boxes home and re-use and all the air bubbles. But what I do is if the box has any kind of writing, promotional advertising etc, I pull that tab inside the box apart, turn it inside out (after removing all labels from previous shipping) and tape that tab back down, and retape the bottom flaps. This has given a new life to the box and looks a ton better. I don't know when the last time I have bought a box or filler. You two are awesome at what you do. i never miss a video. Thank you for all the content and the valued information. I look forward to sharing my first thrift video and what sold here shortly. THANK YOU!!!
I turned boxes inside out quite frequently! I have used quality boxes from food (think Costo or Sams’s Club) including the liquor store turned inside out!
My daughter and I are just starting out and this was great information. Thank you so much! We live in upstate SC and I just found your videos love your content!
Thank you both SO much for all your tips and advice! I’ve recently gotten into reselling on eBay and I am manifesting that it will become full time for me too!!! And sticking with it after just having started a few weeks ago…while I patiently wait for some more sales to come in lol….trial and error. 😅😆 So I’ve been looking out for what’s truly profitable etc. All of your videos have been soooo helpful and inspiring and motivating!!! How liberating to work for yourself, I will stop at nothing to make that happen!!! 😆👌🏽💪🏽🌟 Keep up there awesome work and cheers to you both! Thank you! ❤️
Very informative video. I feel I do a good job with packing items. My challenge is to not overpack when not necessary. I have gotten better but sometimes still have a little overkill on my materials inside the box. On the plus side everything makes it to its destination safely...on the down side it causes time and materials cost to be inflated. Thanks!
I have only been selling for about 3 months. I learn so much from you two. Thanks for your positive additude and love for selling. It shows.. Loved and needed this video. Your Georgia neighbor.
I just started reselling on EBay! It’s so much fun to watch these videos and learning new ways on how other resellers do it. Gives us newbies more confidence. Would you suggest sticking to EBay now or also doing postmark or other websites? EBay seems really user friendly. Especially with the shipping labels. Thanks a lot :)
Great video!! I purchase newspaper end rolls from printing companies in my area to use as packing material and to also wrap shoes or other items in to protect when shipping. The end rolls are the end of the newpaper rolls that printing companies don't use because there isn't enough to do a print job. I have bought ones that are about 3' wide and have at least 200' on the roll for around $4.00.
Hey, for some reason, it's being a long time since I watched one of your videos. Good to see that you are still rocking it. Your videos are getting better and better. Keep on the good job!
Throwing packages: You should visit your local post office in the morning while the clerks are sorting packages. Rolling hampers are arranged usually in an upside down U and the clerks pull packages out of a BMC, check the address and throw them toward the hamper for the correct carrier route. Sometimes they make it in the correct hamper, sometimes not.
I live in a different area, but sometimes the regional rate boxes are better than flat rate. I would have used regional for some of those items. Also, the shoe shelves you made out of priority boxes are technically not legal; it's considered misuse of USPS property. The flat rate envelope is cheaper than the padded, so put it in the padded then stuff that parcel inside a cardboard flat rate envelope to save some $. Rates are different everywhere but anything over 2 pounds I sent with FedEx or UPS. I almost never use priority if it isn't flat rate or regional.
Josh, I used to work at a company that shipped a couple hundred packages a day and the owner contacted local printing companies and they would throw away the end of paper rolls with a lot of paper still on them we used for packing. Just fyi. I like the videos, keep it up!!!
This video was super informative for someone like myself, who is in year 1 of part time reselling on eBay. I do have a couple of questions if you have time to touch on them, I would greatly appreciate it. 1) How do you determine where to list something? I see you talking about selling on eBay, Poshmark, and Mercari, how do you determine where the best place to sell something would be? 2) Ive been a seller so far that has always shipped in boxes, I think it makes me feel more secure about my items arriving safely. I would def like to start getting into more padded envelope and poly mailers though to reduce costs, do you notice if more items that get returned are shipped in softer packing material though? Any response to these questions would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!
Currently we only sell on eBay and Poshmark. We cross post all of our clothing and shoe items to both platforms. There isn't a one size fits all solution so I would just experiment and see what works best for you. Obviously there are things that I would not recommend shipping and padded envelopes but you can get away with it for a lot of things.
Not a reseller, and don't plan to be, but a few questions out of interest. 1) How do you decide what goes in what bin? Is it arbitrarily decided? 2) what happens when you want to take a vacation for a week or two and not send things out for awhile? Can you close your eBay store?
I just found your video. I already love you guys! Definitely will be binge watching your channel. Im a little confused. What do you guys choose for your shipping information on your listing? Do you let your customer choose their shipping? Because from what I see in your video yall are choosing the shipping after the customer has paid.
I love how you have clothing prepackaged. Do you wash the items before you package them? Also wondering if the shoes get cleaned or sanitized at all? Love your channel and wish y’all the best! Thank you!
For the thank you cards, if you do the 1 hour shipping at Walmart, it's like 9 cents on matte paper (its still kind of shiny, but not like a fully glossy photo). I actually print 2 on one sheet then cut it in half. It's nice since you don't have to order a ton either.
Fun to watch your UA-cam video. If a buyer pays for USPS Priority Mail to have a book shipped, you cannot then ship it USPS Media Mail. Ebay will ding you....at least they use to. You can upgrade a shipping method, but you cannot downgrade a shipping method. I thought I heard you say you could change the shipping method from Priority mail to Media Mail (a downgrade in service). I have used the Triangle boxes a few times to mail items to my daughter. Every triangle box was damaged and in fact, one was completely open for everyone to see the contents. I had even taped the sides and corners. I hope this info is helpful.
Learned a lot! Thank you. I started selling in 1998. Hoo boy can I tell ya some stories! Took time away for life, jobs etc. Now I'm retired and want to make extra income so my husband can retire. Your video are teaching us so much. Thank you thank you thank you.
Wow I think I just watched all your videos minus some live feeds. I may go back and watch those too! Learned a lot from your videos! I appreciate you! Thanks
COMMON QUESTIONS?
"How do I know what bin the item is in?"
Answer: custom sku.
"Where do you get the golf club boxes?"
Answer: eBay or a local supplier. 48x5x5.
"How do you decide to do free shipping or calculated shipping?"
Answer: it doesn't matter. If we want to do free shipping, we add the average cost to ship the item into the total price. For example, shoes cost about $10 to ship on average, so selling a pair for $30 plus shipping is the same as selling them for $40 free shipping.
"What printer do you use?"
Answer: rollo. But you can use any printer you want. We have a whole video about the Rollo printer. Just search "hairy tornado Rollo".
"How do you know what the package weight and dimensions are if you don't pack the item until after it sells?"
Answer: we've shipped thousands of items so we are pretty good at guessing the total weight and dimensions of an item without having to package it up.

What are the most common box/package sizes that a newbie should keep on hand (order free from usps, etc)?
I love seeing processes like this. I was wondering how often you list items and how often you ship items? Everyday?
Not sure if this helps anyone but when I put in my custom “SKU #” I add in what I paid for the item as a reminder. For instance “A-1” in the “a” bin and paid $1. Sometimes it’s easier to see it in your sku as a reminder for when u lower a price you remember what you have into the item ❤️
Ty I been wondering where I can put that ty
I put the bin number, the code for where I bought it and the price. So if I bought something for $4 at a yard sale and put it in the media bin it would be M1-YS0400
That's a really great idea!!! Thanks for putting it out to us!! Much appreciated
I do this too! It helps so much with bookkeeping and quicker when I have to adjust a price.
Me too!
I was wondering where you got your stickers? I recycle a lot of my materials and would love stickers like that!
@@TheEclecticElement I do the same and have made a rubber stamp that says 99.9% recycled ..
.Im sure you can find a place online to print labels for very little.... maybe Vistaprint?
@@deboraballes9044 I love the stamp idea!! I may have to look into that and the labels. Thank you for your advice! :)
As a USPS worker, I appreciate your honesty and support! Thanks for being such a great advocate for the USPS!
You do great work.
Thank YOU for keeping the entire country going for the last 2 yrs.
thank u for all that u do
Thank you! I love my local postal workers! They are so supportive of my business.
@mary jane in my rural area the postal workers are some of the hardest workers I know!
This is how I want to run a business in my house with my loves ones. Happy for you both
Great sentiment! I agree.
Yep I was thinking the same thing when I saw him wrapping it, don’t forget to stuff inside the glass!!
The 7th grade science experiment of dropping the ( protected) egg from a third story window
applies here. Always treat your breakable items like the egg! The shipping companies are rough with the boxes!!
Thanks for all of the great advice on your channel!
This was super-fun to watch! I don't think that you two could ever make a "too long" video! Cheers from Washington State!
I use almost all recycled shipping materials. I just ask people to save their shipping boxes and bubble wrap for me. I ask for tape for Christmas, or I buy it at our local Menards when they have it on sale plus 11% off. I'm that kinda gal you know... love the videos!
My soul mate!! 🤣🤣
Reusing materials saves so much cost and allows friends and family to support you. I have a great source for bubble wrap and boxes and even padded envelopes for 1st class and media mail items. The dollar tree will give you free boxes..just ask! I get tape and poly mailers with my ebay store quarterly credit.
Yeah I even say in my listings I use recycled supplies. I’d rather recycle newspaper than buy packing paper.
Same here. And if you buy the 8 pack of clasp envelopes from dollar general. They are just one dollar. Family Dollar has 6 for a dollar as well. Great for smaller items. Just wrap items in bubble wrap or paper and tape clasp area.
I always recycle everything, gives me a rush to find good boxes😁
On the outside I have a stamp that says 99.9% recycled packaging....I do pay for tape

Got that going on with my boxers. One every smaller box is a Bark Box. The other decided they're all his toys.
As someone who is just starting out selling/reselling goods online I found this extremely insightful!
I'm beyond happy that I stumbled upon your channel because I learn something new with every video. Keep up the great work!
I second this comment! Apollo - I also kind of just started and I’ve learned soo much from him !
I never fail to learn from videos like these even though I think I know everything.
Well done!!
When you have glass like the mug you should put void fill inside it.
If you're shipping thinner glass like wine glasses or something, yes. This mug is like a half inch think, I don't think void fill would do anything
This is an awesome video! Please do these shipping videos like once a month. It will show how you ship throughout the year. This was VERY helpful! Thanks!
I love your guys dog, he’s so cool calm and rarely ever barks probably.
@@Adventureswithbecky just go to stores not Walmart ask them for unwanted boxes they'll usually give them to you

Bought a ti-84 calculator for .50 cents sold within 3 minutes of listing it for 45 bucks free shipping I was amazed

Learned so much, thank you! I saved it to watch again later. I just sold very first item a couple of days ago, made $35. I'm so excited to finally be "open for business" and you, Haley and Mose have definitely been a huge help and influence on me. How do you guys keep up with Mose's work ethic haha love it! Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this video :)
the shipping prices in the US are so crazy. we are lucky here in the UK as it does not matter where in the UK it is shipped to its only priced on weight. great video guys as always.
That's probably because of geography? Shipping an item from DC to Philadelphia (probably by truck) is a lot cheaper than DC to LA.
Yeah cuz it's the Oregon the 9th largest state lol

Y'all inspired me to start selling on ebay and thrifting again...cannot thank you enough! Love watching you both, learn something new every time I watch. Bless you both, 🙏 and much love!
Thank you so much for this video, shipping is one of the most confusing aspects for me concerning eBay
You absolutely can. Good luck and God bless.
Do I plan on becoming a reseller? No. But do I enjoy watching a YTer explaining how to become one? Yes. If I ever do start selling on eBay, I now have the powerful knowledge to know exactly how to ship different items...
Thank goodness for bringing back the trick shots! Been watching since you had a sub # with only 4 digits so I enjoy the throwback.
Your pool noodle idea is brilliant , I'll be using that :) nice video, I'm already great at packing but can always learn more :)

Put the weight of your item and choose your carrier on your prefered selling site. Your selling site will give you carrier options with prices..
Thanks everyone, awesome tips!
Good idea, valid question. I'm curious too
I'm sure you already know about them but Regional Rate boxes are amazing for shipping bulky items. They come in a couple sizes and the A boxes are always cheaper than medium priority and if the delivery is close they can be cheaper than padded envelopes
Sevier Thrifters talked about this in depth on Spotify and other podcasting sites! Great video!
Same I always wanted to resell but Shipping was what scared me not bad I do it for extra income disabled I use mainly USPS label broker very helpful
A few questions:
1) do you ever use the pirateship “box in a bag” feature for priority shipping?
2) where do you get your golf club boxes? (Not the usps tube box)
o you ever use the pirateship “box in a bag” feature for priority shipping? can you eloborate on that?
No, we don't. If you use it correctly, it's cheaper to just put the item in a box. You have to measure the bag before anything is inside.
Love how Hailey talked at the beginning of the video with such confidence!!!!!!! She is doing amazing 👏. Love watching u both so much!
@@joyduncan7824 it costs the same for 1lb 11oz as it would for 2lbs. So I usually do. Gives you more room:)
@@skully6223 same! lol
Love you guys so much
I honestly appreciate the time & effort for these kinds of videos for people like me/us who are curious on how this operation worked to learn.👍🏾💯
Thank you both for this video & I’m always supporting y’all 💯🙏😎
I couldn't of said it better!! Thank You! 🤗
@@HairyTornado thank you!
Mose is doing a fantastic job keeping all your shipping safe. He is really working hard. Haley is really doing great with her part of YouTubing as well. She has really become an awesome addition to the business!!! I remember when we hardly ever saw her when she worked away from home and now she can make videos by herself!!!
Great trick shot - it took me back to the days of your daily videos when you and Mose were home alone and Hayley was working her other job.
Haley was funny at the beginning, smiling then like oops don’t smile so much or something she thought? Keep smiling girl!!
How does the buyer know the shipping costs when you do the packing afterwards? ☺
I have also wondered how this works??
When you list something, you have to enter the weight + dimensions + shipping method. eBay calculates shipping based on that. I usually make a guess on dimensions and add a little to the weight of the item to account for the box weight when I pack. It's usually accurate to within a dollar or so.
Great video on shipping. Now you have to do one on organizing and how to remember where everything is to find easier. Thank you!!!
How you remember which container you put it in?
custom sku.
@@HairyTornado this answer is awesome! I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. Thank you!
TFS
These videos are exactly what I look for especially just getting started lol
Don't forget about the Regional Rate boxes. A Regional A is about the same size as a medium, a Regional B is about the same size as a large. Depending on distance, these Regional Rate boxes are often cheaper than shipping by weight once you hit 2 pounds (and realistically nothing ships at 1 pound, which would be .006 ounces over first class, which tops out at 16.994 ounces). Regional Rate boxes are not stocked at PO's, you have to order them online.
That was a good video young man! Question: When you charge for shipping, how do you set the price if you don't know where it's going? Thanks for all you guys do!
you just put the weight and dimensions in the listing and ebay uses that info to charge the buyer the appropriate shipping.
@@HairyTornado Thanks for answering!
I’ve been thinking about selling on eBay for a while now. Glad to have stumbled across your video… it was inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
The hardest part is definitely the complicated shipping. I have a ton of stuff to sell but the shipping confusion is what's stopping me
It helps to buy a scale. Then you decide what shipping supplies you'll need such as envelop or box size. All books ad dvds and cds fall under media mail. The rest pretty much priority. But all items should offer 2 ways to ship such as priority, first class etc.
@@benijen even if I had a scale it would still be confusing like knowing what price to charge for shipping etc
@@jonblablabla1014 Give me an example of something you want to ship
Really learned a lot today. You and your wife work well together
This video is super helpful. Just looking into how I can ship stuff I make and this has been so helpful, thank you
I sold and shipped vintage glass on ebay for 12 years and never had a single thing break.
Cheers!
I love how diversified you’ve become. Not just shoes and golf clubs anymore! Now ya got books and clothes and wizards!
Yes, the fragile stickers from the post office cost extra for "special handling"
Thank you Josh, Hayley & Mose we all appreciate you x
Thank you!
we only wash the items if they need it. If they dont smell like anything or dont have any stains, we don't wash. We clean shoes if they are dirty.
Haley is the cutest! I love how happy she is to be involved in the videos. Her growth is amazing! Love you too josh hahaha
Great video. I like that you show how you package and ship items. Some resellers dont show all that.
Thanks
I sell on eBay part-time. This video was very informative and entertaining! Thanks for your information!!
Love your videos.
