    The Christian joy & peace is not the absence of pain and suffering, but the assurance of who He is for us. Yes, we will be comforted and satisfied emotionally despite our trials and tribulations.

      Yeah, it sounded to me like the professor was mainly speaking to a secular audience that has a horror of the unpleasant and distasteful, to the point that every paper cut is grounds for collapse of the psyche.

    Hello Mr. Akin! In your recent couple of debates with James White, I felt the interrogation rounds were really where you exposed the weakness of his arguments (and his bad attitude) .
    I feel like you could have more of this. A particular topic could be chosen before hand, and both participants interrogate each other on it.
    But then that's just my opinion. You're the best.

      Howdy, Keith! I also thought the debate would have benefitted from more cross examination. I would have had more cross examination and fewer audience questions. James and I both got only 10 minutes for cross, but there was 30 minutes for audience questions.

      Indeed, a wonderful performance for that debate! I just wish debates weren't always about trying to convince the crowd, but rather the debater (which, admittedly, is there, but secondarily). I say that to say, I was really hoping you'd be able to convince White to become Catholic, for he's a smart man who has been well deceived. And I understand that he had fluffed up his argument with various extraneous points with regard to the main topic, but I feel that to get to the center of the man, you have to bring down those defenses.
      Again, you did a wonderful job! I'm just sad White wasn't convinced.

    I always take comfort on suffering is that Jesus is suffering with you. Sometimes God is so close you cannot see Him kind of like as an analogy, if you hold your hand close to your face you cannot focus on seeing it.

  • @tonyl3762

    The intellectual answers to the problem of suffering are essential, but I do think the most emotionally satisfying answer is the compassion of the Incarnation and the Passion, of God Himself suffering in the person of Jesus Christ.

    On the possibility that our prayers for souls in purgatory might make the process less painful or uncomfortable, this prayer comes to mind:
    *Prayer for the Holy Souls when using holy water:*
    *_Opening prayer_*
    Blessed be God Who through water and the Holy Spirit has given us new life.
    _Or_
    By this holy water and by Thy Precious Blood wash away my sins.
    *_Prayer for the Holy Souls_*
    Lord, in Thy mercy multiply these drops of holy water into as many drops as there are souls in purgatory, and allow them _to be free of the fears of the pains of purgation_ as long as the moisture of holy water is present. *+*
    I noticed at church that Mexican women "of a certain age" would always make the Sign of the Cross three times while whispering a prayer and sprinkling holy water on the floor. I asked for the prayer, and got the English translation when I searched and found that it is an approved prayer of the Church (or at least not discouraged or condemned). Oddly, nobody bothers the devout elderly Mexican women in their prayer at the door of the church before and after Mass, but it seems I'm almost always interrupted while I'm praying and sprinkling holy water. Maybe people think I'm eccentric, but I try to teach the prayer when I'm interrupted by praying aloud and not in a whisper.

    It is interesting: consider this: We are all familiar (perhaps) with the comic book fan who will postulate about various parameters of the fictional world of their interest. Things like who is faster the Flash or Superman, or whatever. Yet amazingly the church has been wrapping its mind around these sorts of seemingly imponderable questions about the metaphysics of heaven and so forth for a long time already.

    Greetings from England Jimmy! Absolutely love everything that you do, you have really drawn me to love the deep intellectual side of the faith so I really thank you for that.
    I have a very weird question about something that I have been pondering for a while and one that I haven’t heard anyone talk about, I’d really love to hear your opinion. Apologies if it’s phrased very long and badly but it’s kinda hard to articulate, I’m sure you could summarise the point much better than I can:
    So it’s to do with what I think could be good evidence for the existence of the soul, and perhaps by extension, a personal God. If we assume that all functions in the universe including our psychology and human behaviour can all be explained naturally and materialistically as many atheists claim. How can an atheist/scientist possibly explain the fact that all humans have a unique individual ‘perception’ of reality? To put it another way, if a material universe is all there is, then why is it that we individually perceive reality at all? Why do I have a perception specifically associated to this biological organism that I call myself? Surely if the material world is all there is, we could grant that somehow humans could well exist and function and behave as we do, but I know for a fact that I have some kind of personal perception of the world around me, directly associated with my biological body. Is there any scientific explanation as to why my individual perception even exists in association with this body when the material that makes up my body would supposedly function and behave like me perfectly fine on its own? If perception is merely an illusion caused by my neurons firing in my brain, why isn’t my perception associated with anyone else’s brain chemistry? Why is it associated with a body at all and not just totally absent from the universe while all the natural functions just occur without any individual perception whatsoever?
    I suppose the fundamental question is ‘what is individual perception exactly?’. And I really can’t think of a naturalistic answer to it, and so I just assume that our souls are what allow our ‘perception’ to be ‘present’ and also ‘personal’ within the universe if that makes any sense?
    Would really appreciate any thoughts on this. Apologies again for the sloppiness of my articulation, hope it’s at least partially legible!
    Thanks Jimmy and God bless you!

    If purgatory is an instantaneous purification, then you're going to have to pray for their purgatorial process prior to their death.

    • @JimmyAkin
      @JimmyAkin  4 місяці тому +10

      I would disagree. As I discussed in Episode 208 of Mysterious World (Mysterious.fm/208), it's perfectly possible to pray for events that occurred in the past. Also, in Spe Salvi, Pope Benedict pointed out that since purgatory transcends the earthly reckoning of time, it is never too late to pray for anyone experiencing it. Hope this helps, and God bless you!

    Fascinating walk through Scriptures regarding the term "Son of Man". I think Jesus is also taking up His place as the Last Adam. God gave dominion over the earth to the first Adam, and we know that Jesus is called the Last Adam. (1 Cor. 15:45). The first Adam ceded authority to the devil when he disobeyed God, allowing the devil to do a temporary end-run around God's sovereignty over "the powers of this world". Jesus' humanity is so important for many reasons, but principally because He stands in the first Adam's shoes, taking up Adam's irrevocable authority, but this time as the obedient Son of God...thus taking authority away from the god of this world, the devil. This is what Jesus means when He says, "All authority in heaven and earth is given to me". (Matt. 28:18). He has authority in heaven because He is divine. He has authority on earth because He is the only truly obedient human who ever lived.

    aeviternity is what Thomas Aquinas termed the mode of existence of creatures in heaven with God--not time, not eternity, something between.

    Does anyone know where the church has definitely defined that humans will experience time in the afterlife?

    • @JimmyAkin
      @JimmyAkin  4 місяці тому

      It's not a defined (i.e., infallible) teaching, but it is a teaching that all creatures are subject to time in some form. John Paul II commented on this in a passage I quote in one of my blog posts discussing time and eternity.

    • @bman5257
      @bman5257 4 місяці тому +1

      The medievals distinguished between “eternal” which belongs to God alone, and aeviternal which is the creature’s everlasting experience of the afterlife.

    • @JimmyAkin
      @JimmyAkin  4 місяці тому

      @@lucidlocomotive2014 It was the standard opinion. For example, Aquinas discussed this and held that humans in the afterlife do not experience true timelessness but exist in a state that has elements of time called Aeviternity, making it an experience of time, even if it is not time as we experience it.
      This is clear from the fact that there is a sequence to what happens: death--purgatory--heaven--resurrection--post-resurrection state.
