    Quite an interesting video, Johnathan. As a mechanical engineer, what you are trying to attain is the perfect NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) balance to your liking. As you have already discerned that your next options or iteration would be non-resonated catless down pipes and the Active Aoutowerks single exit mid-pipe. I would suggest not mixing metals such as stainless steel, aluminum and titanium, not only because of varying sound resonance characteristics but also galvanic corrosion. If after completing the iteration process, you are still not satisfied with the sound to the exhaust system, you may want to look into a muffler with Helmholtz chambers. I am not aware of any systems for BMW's at the moment. Companies such as HKS and Motordyne use Helmholtz chambers in their High-Power exhausts system for the Nissan Z33,Z34 platform along with the Infiniti V35 coupe, Motordyne makes tuned test-pipes in the form of ART Pipes (Active Resonance Tuning) that fit 350 Z,370 Z, Infiniti G35 coupe' and sedans along with the Q50 and Q60. Helmholtz chambers allow for the tuning of the exhaust flow to prevent boundary separation, wave propagation, as well as flow modification for either turbulent flow or laminar flow. The other point that I would suggest being cognizant of is congruent internal diameter to allow steady state flow continuation i.e. 7.62 cm or 3" to 6.98 cm or 2.75" would create perturbations a rotating turbulent flow and therefore transition the flow state to turbulent until it reaches the muffler. Due to the baffling as well as sound-absorbing material in the muffler, the flow state will always be turbulent. The rasp sound that you dislike falls under the Harshness category of NVH analysis.

      @enigmo08 2 роки тому +2

      +1 on trying the Helmholtz, it’s eliminated the harsh rasp on my n54 E92. You could use a J shaped pipe that is capped off or they make cherry style chambers you can add towards the rear section of the exhaust by the muffler. There is info on this online of how to calculate the length of pipe needed vs rpm speed with the rasp. The width of the pipe has to be the same diameter as the rest of the exhaust tubing.

      Someone in the Bimmerforums took a F8x competition muffler, cut it open, and added hemholtz chambers in the piping within the muffler. I wish I could've heard what it sounded like, but the owner sold the car before he could put it on. Catted downpipes that were 400-600 cell hid rasp really well and sounded more raw with a non-resonated set-up with Active Autowerke's midpipes, while 200 cell catted downpipes and a 4-10" resonators seemed to work well together to combat rasp and drone with any choice of backbox. It's interesting you said about pairing up different metals and going from 3" piping to smaller piping affects sound and possibly performance. I've tried many variations to find the right sounds using the Mperformance titanium
      Muffler and the stock steel muffler with Active's single and equal length midpipes. I'm currently looking for a more complete system using the same metal from downpipe to muffler.

    IMO I don't think changing out to single mid pipe will change the "body", I think it'll effect the tone. I think you should take out one of the resonated sections either do non res catless dp or non res EL midpipe. Either way I'm glad someone is really taking a deep dive into the s55 exhaust and trying out different pieces because it's one of the most annoying parts trying to get right. You should check out teamschirmer's diff risers and solid bushing makes an awesome diff whine in the rear.

      I have the DP’s single mid and Remus. It is spicy, and the perfect combo imo. Valves closed is tame and civilized, open is a party. One thing I did notice is going full e85 gave the exhaust and extra bit of nasty from the advanced timing.

    I'm kind of new to the BMW world. I just purchased about 6 weeks ago a 2008 550i m sport which ofcoursehas the 4.8L V8. I live in Michigan but it was a Texas car so it never saw snow or salt not to mention it has only 70,000 original miles on it. My point it's in near mint condition so I want to do things right. This might be a stupid question but does Dinan make the same exhaust but a single pipe (dual tips ofcourse)? This is exactly the set up I've been looking for, the option to open and close depending on your environment. Anybody that coukd give me any information on this would be greatly appreciated. I'd take other suggestions also. I'm on kind of a budget so I don't want to break the bank to do it which I have a feeling that might be hard to avoid but I would love to hear from more experienced BMW owners. Thx guys
