This Vibrating Bumblebee Unlocks a Flower's Hidden Treasure | Deep Look

- Most flowering plants are more than willing to spread their pollen around. But some flowers hold out for just the right partner. Bumblebees and other buzz pollinators know just how to handle these stubborn flowers. They vibrate the blooms, shaking them until they give up the nutritious pollen.

In the summertime, the air is thick with the low humming of bees delivering pollen from one flower to the next. If you listen closely, a louder buzz may catch your ear.
This sound is the key to a secret stash of pollen that some flowers hide deep within their anthers, the male parts of the plant. Only pollinators that buzz in just the right way can vibrate tiny grains out of minuscule holes at the top of the anthers for a protein-rich snack.
The strategy, called buzz-pollination, is risky. But it’s also critical to human agriculture. Tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants need wild populations of buzz pollinators, such as bumblebees, to produce fruit. Honeybees can’t do it.
Plants need a way to get the pollen - basically sperm - to the female parts of another flower. Most plants lure animal pollinators to spread these male gametes by producing sugary nectar. The bee laps up the sweet reward, is dusted with pollen and passively delivers it to the next bloom.
In contrast, buzz-pollinated flowers encourage bees to eat the pollen directly and hope some grains will make it to another flower. The evolutionary strategy is baffling to scientists.
“The flower is almost like playing hard to get,” says Anne Leonard, a biologist at the University of Nevada, Reno who studies buzz pollination. “It’s intriguing because these buzz-pollinated plants ask for a huge energy investment from the bees, but don’t give much back.”
--- What is buzz pollination?
Most flowering plants use sugary nectar as bait to attract bees and other pollinators, which get coated in pollen along the way. And since bees are messy, they inadvertently scatter some of that pollen onto the female part of the next flower they visit.
But some flowers lock their pollen up in their anthers, the male parts of the flower, instead of giving it away freely. The only way for the pollen to escape is through small holes called pores. Some pollinators like bumblebees (but not honeybees) are able to vibrate the flower’s anthers which shakes up the pollen and causes it to spew out of the pores.
The bumblebee collects the pollen and uses it as a reliable and protected source of protein.
--- What important crops use buzz pollination to make food?
The most important crops that use buzz pollination are potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkins, eggplants, cranberries and blueberries
--- What animals are capable of buzz pollination?
Many types of bees engage in buzz pollination, also called sonication. The most common is probably the bumblebee. Honeybees generally don’t use buzz pollination.

that bumble bees are being vibrators for flowers
Yep!
Deep Look Oh god you axtually responded I thought this channel was innocent wwwhhyyyy
im screaming lol
No buzz pollinators no pollination, it would seem that both are needed at the same time for the symbiosis to work.
Nature shouldn't be turning me on this much...
Flowers are pretty kinky.
Have you seen poison ivy?

Maybe stinky? Why

Don't watch this with headphones. I keep turning my head thinking there's a bee.

That's what happened with me.
Lol , Keven same , its always THE BEE!
Lol
Keven Zhao im watching with a heaphone
They're so adorable! I think bumblebees are cuter than regular bees. (:
Brianna Sanchez I think bumble bees are really cute too!
I love all bees
Except carpenter bees, those ones are weird. Because once, a carpenter flew near the house and then it flew and hit the window and then flew away
Super cute!
Bumblebees are super chill, you can even pet one if you have a steady hand or hold one as long as the bee doesn’t feel threatened.
Brianna Sanchez I think they are the cutest 🐝😄
Fun fact: just like there's a dead wasp in every fig, there is a living bee in every vibrator.
Nitay A. There is not a dead wasp in every fig
Alexys07 06 their actually is look it up it's a true fact😕
Alani Owens No. the figs we eat don’t have pollination. Therefore, not every fig has a wasp in it.
Alexys07 06 i saw a vid were it says a female wasps lays it eggs in it a sometimes they female doesn't make it out and it dies in it I don't rat.figs so I don't know if it true or if it's fake😕
Alani Owens
It's true, but it's not every fig. The figs we eat are female. Female fig wasps lay eggs inside male figs and die inside them. Male figs are the ones we don't eat.

this channel rivals David Attenborough's documentaries in knowledge and visual detail.
Wow, thanks for the high compliments!!
i just agree with everything she tells me; people tell me i just meds but im happy when i watch this channel. btw Please make a audio a book
Imagine this channel but with david narrating it.. Alas such perfection is not for humankind to witness.

1:39 - The buzzing sound actually isn't from the wings flapping, but from the thoracic muscles vibrating to move the wings. The act of vibrating in this way is known as sonication. :)
Draw Curiosity thanks dude
It's clearly the wings making the sound though, just check closely...muscles do not make sound in itself, they create it
Jorg Zoetebier I hope I remember this correctly: in the most modern flying insects, i.e. those that can fold their wings above their back (basically all but dragonflies), the muscles only work to pull down the upper part of the thorax, to which the wings are hinged. The muscles are then released and the wings flap down as the thorax elastically clicks back to its former shape. I think it is the sound caused by this deformation that we hear, but I may be wrong. This mechanism makes it so that the wings can beat twice more quickly than the muscles could flap them.
Oh, another cool thing: the wings beat too fast for a nervous signal to reach them from the brain with each beat, despite how small the insect is and how quick neurons are. In the same group of insects, the flying muscles contract independently, out of internal impulses, and need only be turned on or off / up or down from the brain.
Thank u
Can we see some of the bee-hind of scenes ;) I would love to know how you make these high quality videos!
We're working on a behind the scenes of deep look video currently.
Soo if pollen is sperm does that mean bees have been eating and covering them selves in sperm lmao
slutty bees
Tronical ikr
honey in that case, call me buzz because I'm a bee.

I've been working on a farm for a year and the polytunnels (plastic greenhouses) are full of bumblebees and bee mimmicking flies, but I've just seen one or two actual bees despite that there are hives nearby
Now I understand why there are so many bumblebees and why they're so noisy arround flowers, it's so amazing to find out about this stuff after working in there for months

Hey Deep Look! I just discovered your channel and your videos are all amazing. I'm a honey bee lover (used to work as a guide in a beekeeping museum) and I'd love if you would do a video about them, their system, their little dances, stuff like that. I think more people should be interested in protecting them. That's just a suggestion :) Keep up the good work!!
Thanks!
They are not just messy. Bees will specifically Collect pollen, on purpose.
A very good channel. I've subscribed it before but now i've turn on my notifications. Nice work keep it coming. :)

POKEMON TYPE WEAKNESS/SUPER-EFFECTIVENESS ALERT (BUG >>> GRASS): The scene in 0:10 explains the reason why in pokemon franchises Grass type pokemon is weak to Bug type pokemons/attacks (reason: most insects eat plants' parts).

2:10 mastu -- i mean -- assisting a flower with a tuning fork.
I didn't know tomatoes, potatoes and blueberries; three of my favorite foods needed buzz pollination! Thanks for the lesson Deep Look!
If you grow potatoes and want some True Potato Seeds plant two different types close together and if they flower at the same time, the Bumble Bees will cross pollinate them. Its fascinating stuff. We now have about 25 unnamed varieties of potatoes. One potato fruit alone produced potatoes of 5 different colours. Blue Berries,Tomatoes and Potatoes are just 3 crops of many that need to be buz pollinated by Bumble Bees if fruits and seeds are required.
It's funny, I've got tomatoes and eggplants indoors, with no access to bumblebees. The eggplant flowers are doing nothing on their own. The toms however, seem to pollinate without bumblebees or anything O.o It's a mystery

I watched this channel since it was really small, I love what you do, not just the footage but the narration is amazing as well! amazing channel and well deserving to grow big!
Thank you!
I though the bees eat the nectar of the flowers! If the bees eat the pollen as well, why do plants produce nectar, wouldn't the pollen itself attract the bees?
Buzz-pollinated flowers encourage bees to eat the pollen directly instead of the nectar. You can read more about it here: ww2.kqed.org/science/2016/07/19/this-vibrating-bumblebee-unlocks-a-flowers-hidden-treasure/

Are bumblebees aggressive?
Bumblebees are not as aggressive and likely to sting as are hornets and yellowjackets. Males cannot sting, and females only do so when they feel threatened. Their stings, however, are painful and could be dangerous to those with allergies.
How can you tell if a bumblebee is male or female?
Female bumblebees are easily identifiable by looking at their hind legs which expand into a smooth convex-shaped structure called a corbicula. The corbicula is where the female bumblebee collects pollen. If a bumblebee has a ball of pollen attached to its hind legs, it is a female.
3:08 IS THAT THE BEE'S MOUTH!?
Its tongue.
I think you're talking about the proboscis, with the tongue inside. Cool how it folds up for flight.
Josh Cassidy it's so alien looking!
I wonder if that's where H.R. Giger got the idea. Glad bees are small and prefer to use their proboscis on flowers.

I remembered a video where another plant keeps its pollen hidden and I thought why? But now it makes sense, they want to increase its chance of the pollen going only to others of the same species

How did I get here? It's 3 in the morning.
So the bee sits on the male part of the flower vibrates and then the pollen come out. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) (the internet has ruined me)
Hm... Interesting...
The bee vibrates harder and it releases the pollen ALL OVER the bee 👀

Mom flower: What are you watching?
Flower kids: uh nothing mom!
And if the flower has a 401k and a steady income, the bees tend to not mind if it's pollen gets in their mouth
I finger flick my tomato plants flowers because we don't have bumblebees here.
Amazing! However, I have been subscribed AND am supposed to be notified every time a Deep Look video is posted (by clicking the symbol that looks like a gear). It usually works. However, UA-cam did NOT notify me this time--only discovered it on NPR. I hope this was just a fluke.
Sorry to hear that. Some other channels have been reporting that problem. We'll keep an eye out for it.
