Little known thing about the dandelion is that it's a pioneer plant species. And as is the case with all pioneer plants they are most successful when the conditions for more permanent growth is not ideal. They lock nutrients into the ground. So they are very good plants to have from a long term perspective. Once ground nutrients and PH is normalised other plants easily out-compete them. A mowed lawn is akin to a grazed meadow. However of course dandelions are the first thing to be grazed. So basically with a lawn your best bet is to mow regularly enough so that flowers and seeds can never form. However it is worth noting that dandelions are very good for your lawn too if you can live with them. They will only take over if your soil is really poor. In most cases you can sample your soil to determine deficiencies that you can nudge into a better range through fertilisers. Your other plants then have a chance to out-compete them. But dandelions are good for soil. No mess. No fertiliser runoff. No fuss. And I find them to be a particularly fetching plant as well.

Most “weeds” are so incredibly beneficial to our ecosystems. Whether it’s underground helping balance nutrients or above feeding all kinds of helpful friends with greens, seeds or pollen! Chemical treatments to remove them harm more than just the plant.
Still, it's good to know your weeds, ones from other countries are almost guaranteed to be invasive (including several species of clover for example). Dandelion (and sometimes cats ear) is one of the few that isn't too aggressive and just grows wherever without bullying other plants. Allow native weeds to grow more, they can suppress or take over invasive ones and you won't need to use any herbicides.
@@SimonWoodburyForget gardens, standing water, abandoned buildings, rotting food waste, and unsanitary living conditions also attract pests that can carry disease.
Agreed, weeds being designated by aesthetic does a huge disservice Some invasives though, like buckthorn (I'm in the Midwest United States) do often need to be controlled using herbicide because it's that aggressive and harmful
Any friend and or relative of dandelions is welcome in my garden. I have purple hawkweed and Indian paintbrush, awa tons of dandelions. These cats ears look a lot like a cross between the former two.
