- I just released a 2nd video using regular soda on rusty trailer hubs... Here: • Soda Blasting with REG...
Needed to prep some junkyard wheels for a cheap rattle can paint job, for the farm trailer. Soda blasting with regular baking soda worked well to deep clean the wheels, and if I had used more material I could have taken the paint off as well.
My newest soda blasting video here - ua-cam.com/video/iDwnizI61xs/v-deo.html
Y'all know there is the new olden device called a funnel. Ya gotta try one makes life much easier...
I always remove tires so I can blast then paint the inside of the rims and replace the valve stems. Beads seat better and any corrosion from condensation is removed.
Beats the hell out of a wire wheel on a grinder
came across someone talking about using bulk baking soda blasting on their farm and found your video. very detailed. I learned something new. Thank you for posting
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching.
I must say if I didn't see this I would never have believed it would work so well
It indeed works. Fairly cheap way to clean and remove mild rust
I bought a camping tent for my work shop to do my sand & soda blasting in for my small projects 😁 awesome clean up a breeze vacuum .😁🎪 Recycle put back in to my Hopper.👍 happy blasting 😂 vacuum
I did that on an old honda CB650c engine many years ago. It worked great. I also used it to clean the carbs.
The nice thing about this is once it rains, most of this will dissolve, and I don't think it's that harsh on the environment. If anything it should help balance the ph
WOW I am Impressed thanks for the video !
Now alls we need now is the self rising flower 😅🤣 nice excellent thank you for sharing
Thank you for the information, I just bought a new compressor, my grandson got my old one (2 months old) I have both the blasting gun and the 50 pound sand blaster set up. I want to sand blast horse shoes so I can weld gun racks, mail box stands and crosses for vines in the garden. I also want to try blasting glass, and wood just to experiment.
Isn't he a little young for a compressor?
The compressor was 2 months old. Didn’t do all I wanted so I gave it to my grandson who has kids who ride bikes and he uses the air gun to clean refrigeration coils.
Thanks for watching!
@@charlesk7623 my compressor is 42yo
Arm and Hammer is finer soda. Aldi or other cheap soda is courser and better for abrasion. I'm building a cardboard box to work in to catch/reuse the soda (like a blast cabinet). Open on one side only and taped on the inside so no cracks to catch soda in.
Thanks for the info, thank for watching
I’m thinking fine masons sand just shoot through that also… nice to know that something at HF actually works without modifying
Will definitely try this. Got a sand gun and was looking for soda blasting gun, but then saw that blasting media could cost 50USD or more with delivery to East Europe, so will try this with the sand gun I already have. Restoring an old bike, so wanna clean some aluminium parts, hopefully it will do the job. Thanks!
Regular soda will clean aluminum very well, good luck!
aluminium is easy to clean. You can use beach or river sand after drying it and filtering it. In contruction stores they usually have sandblasting media, but this gun can only take small sand so dont get crushed glass.
@@Ozarkwild Thanks, will try it this summer :D
@@drefhill NEVER use sand on aluminum unless you are looking to remove excess material
Wow I’m impressed
great video, thank you. I will give it a try, and I have an idea that I can use old coffee grounds if I dry them out.
Coffee grounds.. nice! Let us know how that goes.
@@Ozarkwild It'll be a while, I broke the compressor while trying to 'fix' it.. I'll save the video so I don't lose it. Hopefully next week.
Nicely done? I was wondering if regular baking soda would work in one of these types of blaster, and now I know. Thanks for posting.
Glad I could help, thanks for watching
Quite impressive, I recently used glass beads in a similar blaster to do similar wheels and from your video it appears the soda does a better job. Probably dont need to wear a Tyvek suit or full helmet either.
Wear a good mask so your nose doesn’t get filled with soda. Thanks for watching
I want to clean things this way!!! I still don't know what I would be cleaning though 😛
MAX AIR=90

Lonsome=compresser set to 150
Yeah, I’ve never been one to follow the ‘status quo’ (or instructions)
I think with a muriatic acid wash then wash it off, then a day or so later after letting it totally dry out in hot weather well use some mild torch heat on the metal before primer would work. I use about the same process after using coal media. That gets tricky with them Harbor Freight blasters even the old Ames blasters have trouble with certain medias. I have 2 of em one works when it works the others been good to me for years and they are nearly Identical. I actually bought a NEOGEN ball valve for the Harbor Freight its what makes the Ames blaster work so good. I just ain't put that on yet. I am itching to try it soon as the weather warms up. An acid wash can also soften hard brittle paint to the point is the soda might just be enough if ya use acid is my point. Using heat as ya primer also makes a huge diff in how the new paint holds up even if ya use cheap paint it lasts a while. I have rims I did like 8 years ago and they still ain't bad not at all.
Would have loved to see a comparison!
I was literally thinking of this the other day then I seen your video and I happen to have the HF gravity fed blaster haha it's like the internet read my mind which is kind of scary
Would like to see a comparison between that method and power wash with plain water.
Just curious.........
Great work, can I ask how much baking soda you used for the wheels? Thank you!
Thank you. Great job. And i subscribed
Thank you!
I tried this you can beath around the stuff
Will try on an old singer cast treadle stand.....
What a great idea !
I have tis one or looks like it do you need 500000lbs of pressure to work.? I can't get it to do anything
Need to turn your media flow down a little bit you'll get better results
Is anyone able to confirm what type of finish you get on stainless steel? Have vintage watch cases and straps that have a satin brushed surface (with no brush direction/grain). With older watches, this finished becomes polished with wear. Looking to recreate the satin effect. Thanks.
That baking soda looks as if it does better than sand
It is 'better' than sand for finishing jobs, but not paint removal.
I really like to support "How-To" video makers, but I'd highly recommend learning some editing basics to clean up the videos. Gave you a "like" for now.
Would be very interesting to see if intake valves could be cleaned using baking soda instead of walnut shell, if so the cost of valve cleaning just halved.
A wire wheel on a bench grinder works great
@@drd1924you can't use a bench grinder to remove carbon deposits behind the intake valves
@@RGV2300 you can when you use a wire wheel on the shaft, I do it all the time
The salt is what made it work ,not a good idea !😮
I am impressed !!!!!!!
An cheap from the dollar store
How many boxes per wheel great video
Took about 1 box per wheel... So about $2 for all 4 wheels (50 cents per box).
it would take a lot more to make the wheels completly clean of any paint.
What’s the benefit of baking soda? Not as toxic?
I gotta try that on the cat... I mean the cats litter pan....
Could you do this on a piece of plastic possibly?
Yes, soda will clean hard plastic very well, like molded outdoor chairs.
Do you have an idea a how much cleaning you were able to get from a box of the soda? Was it on wheel, two wheels, etc? Not including the worst case rusted wheel. Thank you.
Prob about 4 small boxes of soda, the smaller boxes.
What pressure are you using?
You said that you have used sand in this product. I noticed on mine that it says not to use sand. Did you have any I'll effects?
Too small size media soda, use medium or xl soda from HF , comes in 50 lbs bags. Food baking soda good for very final polishing.
Food grade soda is also good for cleaning and paint prep, as evidenced by the video.
65-85psi to clean and preserve factory coatings generally... works great on removing rattle can paint jobs on firearms as well
Who would rattle can a paint job on a firearm??
Love it good video
How many boxes of soda did you go through? Like one box/wheel, or 4 wheels/box? Just wondering…
Prob 2 boxes per hub
Wonder how much soda you used for what you did in the video? I bought that gun and it uses a TON of soda. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong.
I think I mentioned somewhere in the video how much I used, can't remember. That gun does go through a lot of soda, but you can turn down the flow by moving the flow control level half way instead of full open. That's the nature of gravity fed guns.
when i was using that gun i used beach sand so it was free i just had to dry it and filter it. But it's toxic and without cabinet it just get blown in the air so only good for small parts once in a while.
I tried finding it on the website but I couldnt find it

Salve cosa usa come sabbia o abrasivo
Turn yer pressure down and save the paint
Would this remove gel stain from douglas fir logs?
not sure what gel strain is but it doesn't work on grease, gum, silicon and other soft gummy sticky stuff.
sugar/salt would probably work really well. guess you wouldn't want sugar all over the place though so salt?
Got me thinking, pool salt, grind it in a food grinder, would be a cheaper option
Only if you want more rust than you started with.
Soda is pretty cool..not only does it remove the rust when you blast, it inhibits it after blasting..soda-blasted bare metal can sit quite a bit longer than "clean" bare metal before it starts oxidizing.
What are the specs of the air compressor that you used for this job?
My compressor is a 30 gallon, 155psi max. I run the blast gun around 130 to 150psi
@@Ozarkwild Thank you, gonna start saving up for a better air compressor 👌
Great review. Have you done this with sand?
No.. and NEVER use regular 'play sand'. General use sand consist of crystalline silica and can permanently damage your lungs. Instead use Aluminum Oxide, works just as well.
Yeah, I always soda blast wearing safety glasses, "wearing nothing at else," sometimes a hat. sorry couldn't shut up...
Maybe I missed it in the video, what psi is this at?
I think the gun is rated at 90psi. I however ran it a little higher
@@Ozarkwild Thanks
What size is your compressor? Would I get away with a 10gal compressor or should I get one of those portable 11 gal tanks to 21 gal at that point?
I think mine is a 60 gallon. You might get away with a 10 gallon, but you will have to allow it to recover more often. Might get away with it for very small jobs.
It's the flow that matter not so much the tank size. Tank size compensate for small flow but usually 10 gal compressor also have small flow.
You'll not do much with a 10gal compressor.
I had a 100 liters with 250l/min flow and it was not enough.
I have a 30 gallon stand up compressor and it cuts off at a 150 PSI will that work
I'm no tree hugger, but what about the 4 boxes of baking soda in your yard? Does it blow away with the wind or does it pile up and cause a big mess?
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is inert. It's non toxic. It will blow away with the wind or wash away with the rain (the paint particles coming off with the soda could be an issue however). Certainly a commercial operation operating soda blasters would have some type of recovery measures set up. To answer your question.. No, doesn't make a mess at all, or it did not with me, for small jobs. Nothing like sand... the soda just blows away in the wind.
It also kills crab-grass and some weeds.
Hope the cops don’t start asking questions
"cops"... What are you talking about?
@@Ozarkwild i think it was meant as some childish cocaine joke..
@@izoyt Maybe so. Folks troll everywhere these days
You should've said, "I hope the cops don't come sniffing around". 😉
@@igotakai5644 he should have not said anything at all.
Hi, Is baking soda abrasive enough to remove the paint off of my bike and up(tank, side shields, suspension casings and mud guard) ?
If not, I would like to know a cheap alternative media as cheap as baking soda that can do the job I am hoping to accomplish.
Thanks
Aluminum Oxide will work and does not cost that much. Pick it up at your local Harbor Freight store. Soda will clean well, but off the shelf baking soda will not remove the paint from your bike.
@@Ozarkwild ... ok thanks ... even i thought baking soda might lack the teeth needed to blow away the paint.
This Aluminium Oxide powder you are referring to, should i ask for any particular granular size ?
BTW how much does it cost in comparison to the baking soda ?
I would also like to know where does 'regular construction sand' stand in comparison to the above 2 media for my application ?
You can get a 50lb bag of fine coal slag (not the black medium grit) the brown color for $12.99 at Tractor Supply. I have used the Harbor Freight hand held gun and their 50lb gravity fed blasting equipment to remove bike paint. That 50lb bag goes a long way. No reason to capture either. Plus you can just blow it into the grass. Not too much silica but use a respirator ALWAYS. I have dogs so we make sure it’s gets blown or mowed out just in case
Nice, would this work on furniture?
I think it would. Many people use soda on furniture. Take an old piece of furniture and experiment on it!
Works great on wood and other soft materials that reglar sand is to aggressive on.
Works super for cleaning oxidized aluminium.
Hi O. Wild, I watch with interest you cleaning of the tyre wheels. Is it you are doing the job with a 30 gallons, 155psi compressor? Can I know are you using the compressor that runs on a 3 phase or Single phase voltage? Thanks..
Did you use a dust mask or respirator? Seems like it was not throwing big clouds of soda up. Thanks for showing this as I was just looking at that on HF before searching out videos to see how effective it was.
I did not use a dusk mask, of any kind. Maybe I should have, but soda is non toxic and approved by the EPA as non toxic. I did however have soda in my nose for a few hours afterwards, so if I do it again, I will wear a mask (and thanks to COVID, I have a good stockpile of them!)
@@Ozarkwild thanks for the feedback. Got a chuckle from that. 😀
With the harbor freight blaster it's supposed to be refrigerated. Clean afterwards with vinegar.
The only difference between the baking soda sold in the store for food and the harbor freight baking soda is the food grade is certified for food. Would I cook with the harbor freight soda? No. Could I? Yes.
What is your air pressure ar?
110 to 90
@@Ozarkwild What CFM? My wife wants one like this for furniture BUT they all call for 7CFM and higher compressors and those are $$$$$$.
@@mikewinkler1 You need at least 90psi. I run 120psi to remove paint and light rust.
@@Ozarkwild do you think 4CFM @ 120PSI will work?
@@mikewinkler1 should work fine
Wow, works great! Did you need to modify the gun or hopper at all?
No modifications, stock gun, Harbor Freight
personnaly i drilled bigger hole in the level and tank.
I used it with beach sand.
@@drefhill watch out with regular sand it can damage your lungs.
I can't believe you never told us how much soda was used? Just kept saying a lot??
10 bottles
How often did you have to refill the hopper?
4 or 5 little boxes, 50 cents per box, so about 2 bucks worth.
wait what ? U tube threw this video up immediately after watching an actually useful video on soda blasting aluminum heads heads because sand isnt an option and left over glass beads if not removed will wipe out the engine you install it on. You are blasting a STEEL wheel correct ? unless you got a lot of FREE soda lying around and simply to lazy to get some sand and maybe your are using a very very very large commercial sand blaster ? why on earth would you use soda ? That is sorta like sanding down a car to prep for painting but instead of using 400 grit wet sanding papaer you decided to use bounty kitchen towels instead ? not saying it will not work but dont you value your time ? Soda is something you want to use when cleaning your wife's copper pans and pots because it will not scratch or harm anything. That is a road wheel made out of steel sand or glass beads is what is best and if powder coated aluminum oxide media .
and soda does jack shiticus on rust ..
Hello, good video.. how many times did you need to refill the sandblaster per tire side?
It took about 1 box per wheel (.50 cent box). I think the gravity fed blaster uses more than it should. I may have used less had I been using a siphon type gun.
@@Ozarkwild Thanks for reply, I tried using with sand and it basically spilled out of the canister as I tilted instead out blowing out . any recommendations on a better one to use for wood or rock
@@kbmain Make sure your PSI is at least 90 or above... I recommend 110 or above. This will allow the pressure to force out the media faster than it can spill out. I run at around 140 psi.
Downvoted for asking me to subscribe before the content even started. It's like a waiter asking for a tip before bringing the food. Then I immediately clicked off the video without watching it.
@@michaelbluejay Glad you didn’t watch the video! Based on your comments, you aren’t the type of viewer I want seeing my content. No trolls allowed.
A decent pressure washer would have done a better job
There was no need to blast the painted rim
This is a very poor plan as the operater had mentioned his plan earlier !
👍👍👍🌍🌍🌍👍👍🍀🍀🇵🇱🇵🇱
shit that aint no rust lol
What’s the benefit of baking soda? Not as toxic?
Correct, and also milder, will not pit and ruin the surface, it's much more forgiving than silica type media. Dry ice is even better.
Hi I want to sandblast the furniture but dont know what all to buy. Can you please list down all the parts/equipments I need to buy
Great idea and I'll probably try it! But the gun says. "Do not exceed 90 lbs". Which is a little lower than 140.
Yeah.. go big or go home ;)
What is min air spec for this gun?
You should be wearing a dual filter lead asbestos respirator while doing this, I hope you were between takes. Good demonstration thanks!
