that's actually a very intuitive and useful way of conceptualizing you sound design when you're trying to make something sound 'real,' i've been trying to humanize my synthesis for a long time and this approach to the rack order is really going to help me.
Hey man, thanks for the video, the pads sound great! I'm a mixer, in regards to you EQ questions, EQ shifts phase, and affects frequencies not only in your eq moves, but around them as well. the reason you hear a boost in the high mids is because HP and LP filters have a resonance peak at the cut-off point, anything slightly before your LP frequency will have a little bit of a boost. You can actually use this to your advantage when mixing bass, a HP cut off around 20/30/40 Hz will give a little bump a hair above the cut off and actually make it sound tighter and give it a little heft. Lots of info about this online if you wanna learn more. Also, you can do all those EQ moves on one EQ if you'd like, that's why it has multiple bands, should sound exactly the same unless the plugins were different
I always thought the boost was because of the phase-shifting that the filters cause and not because of the resonance peak. But when I think about it logically, if its phase-shifting then we should both notice a boost and a decrease when the filter moves. Thanks for the info :)
It was nice to see a tutorial with realistic cpu usage. Other the tutorials be like "use 7 serums with 10 major 7th cords, run it through omnisphere with an added 327 reverbs, 6 delays and a glue compressor " and the cpu usage is at like 2% lol
Omg... I've been trying forever to recreate a certain chord / pad sound from a meditation track that came with a Qigong course I've been practicing for over a decade, and at 5:30 you had already just about nailed it. The rest of the magic came from a Chinese flute instrument, I couldn't do that perfectly either but I'm pretty satisfied with a sound I got by putting a Valhalla Shimmer reverb on the Crystal Flute vst from Embertone. That thing has become my secret weapon for meditation music... But thanks for this!
I never leave comments, I think you are the first who receive a comment from me on You Tube and I am using YT since a long time... beside that please make more stuff! Great Videos and a refreshing style of tutorial watching! :)
Thanks. I needed this. To see how simple it can be and not so "extreme rocket scientist complicated" .. .. you know .. .. so I can be that rocket scientist lol .. later on .. 😎 Keep up the good work, man .. Chilling on "The Passing" right now. It sounds tight!
Cheers mate , lovely tutorial, I'm sure you explained it well in your tutorial but a lot of guys dont own serum, a replacement with an ableton built in synth would be amaazing ... just feedback, still love your tutorial
wow 6 years and this still is probably the best sounding pad tutorial on yt. can i get this sound with any free synth or is serum really worth it to get the best sound?
Thank you! Serum has been known to have really clean wavetables with little to no imperfections in the frequency response, but just about any synth that can do detuned saws will give you a pretty much identical result to the naked ear!
Hi, "Sidechaining is important". I'm a small music producer and i was wondering if i could use a different vst other than serum or the "pay only" ones. I also dont use ableton, i'm an fl user and what you've done in the video, do i have to change any of the settings ir keep the same ones in the video? Thanks!
That is soo crazy, I come here to learn how to do some nice pads with serum. I just released a song titled 'Tranquil' and you have the same song name lol How coincidental..
Please do a tutorial on how to create a full track from these pads so that it is not monotonous? I want to know how you made the first track that you showed in the beginning of the video.
Can I ask you, is everything in here, effects, sounds, etc, Serum? I am very naive about soft synths and DAWs, and trying to decide if I want to go that route.
How do you get such a smooth transition in the first two chords, in your complete track at the beginning? Sounds so seamless. Love the video man, has helped heaps!
What would be the difference between having 2 - 3 individual instances of EQs doing what you made them in the beginning instead of 1? Would there be any or is just more transparent for you that way and more precise?
When listening to your intro example its evident that theres chord changes going on, question is how do you go about writing them after this process? Do you manually do it from inside the midi clip or use the pitch midi device?
I just did it manually inside the midi clip. I suppose you could use the pitch midi device, as long as you're okay with every chord being the same type of chord..
Quick question, wouldnt it make more sense to put the reverb in a return track and turn up the knob on the individual tracks to that reverb return track?
Maybe if you wanted the reverb to be the same all across the board. This method of having slightly different reverb on each serum patch makes the pads unique to each other creating a more dynamic sound
i have done everything like you but my pads looks a lot less "clean" and have more "buzz" if its clear, do you know why ? I tought it was with the type of my oscillator but its the same as yours
It sounds like the sound is clipping - either at each track, or at the master - or you're just using low quality speakers that aren't capable of cleanly reproducing all of those lower frequencies that are so close together. If neither of those is the issue, you may just need a stronger LP filter and/or lower the cutoff.
@@ProjectsinPoo i have good headphones, it must be that the sound is clipping (i don't know what that is but imma do some research) or i will check for the filters ! thank you for the reply, those pads looks like they came from heaven
@@ProjectsinPoo I came back again for the vid and this time i did it right. So the problem was that my C3 was your C1. on my fl studio every keys is 2 octave lower than yours, so the excessive bass would make a weird buzzy sound, even if i lowered the volume cuz there was too much bass anyway... weird Thanks for the pad, it is great
Thank you! The 4th or the 9th note in a scale, added into/onto a chord. For example, a c major 9th chord would be a normal c major chord (1, 3, 5 - C, E, G) with the additional 9th note, a D (1, 3, 5, 9 - C, E, G, D). In the case of a ninth chord, it could also just be the 2nd note, though (1, 2, 3, 5 - C, D, E, G). The D would just move from way above the original chord down to in between the 1 and 3. The same idea works with the 4th. I hope that helps. =P
I make all as you say but in fl , ang get some H.P. Lovecraft atmosphere ))) all settings and all eq set like in this tutorial but somehow it gets dark/
Yeah, i think all together this is like 450 saw waves lol it would probably be good to save this as an audio track then use that sample in the song to save some CPU for the rest of the track
He used 3 because at the time it was just easy for him to visualize what each EQ was doing to the sound, and it can get a little confusing to only use one with all 8 of the filters turned on, but now he has gotten over himself and just uses one EQ to save CPU usage. so doesn't really matter as far as how it sounds.
@@ProjectsinPoo Hey! Alright cool, i was just wondering if it actually made any sort of difference or if it just was easier to show the viewers. Thanks for the answer!! :)

Thanks! Just taper off the first chord not by note, and taper in the next one sort of over lapping the first one, just like how I explained at 12:18
What would be the difference between having 2 - 3 individual instances of EQs doing what you made them in the beginning instead of 1? Would there be any or is just more transparent for you that way and more precise?
Really no difference in the way it sounds at all. I just do it so i can better visualize the different cuts and boosts or whatever. :)
When listening to your intro example its evident that theres chord changes going on, question is how do you go about writing them after this process? Do you manually do it from inside the midi clip or use the pitch midi device?

it peaks because whenever you cut something it creates resonance. The steeper the cut, the more resonance.

I followed every step with the first synth preset and mine sounds nowhere near as soft as yours, it sounds like a regular 90s synth with a lot of gain
What chords are in the demo song?

I make all as you say but in fl , ang get some H.P. Lovecraft atmosphere )))
all settings and all eq set like in this tutorial but somehow it gets dark/
ableton reverb is unmatched, i use fl mainly too but sometimes i gotta bounce stems and get that ableton reverb
clips really bad is there a way to solve this ?
Avenue 43 limiters
turn down the volume
Cpu is getting hit hard .. what mac are you using??
Keep in mind that Serum is very heavy on the cpu, especially with around 16 voices per osc while playing these massive chords.
Yeah, i think all together this is like 450 saw waves lol it would probably be good to save this as an audio track then use that sample in the song to save some CPU for the rest of the track
Hey man, I know this video is two years old, but i don't have "EQ eight" just "EQ three"? how do i get that?
you don't have ableton suite i presume.
Gilles D Unfortunately nah. I ended up getting serum though and made the pad through that though.
turn mic up
