I believe this one has been hit with a lawn mower for the last 5 years or so! I found it on the side of a gravel trail in my area and once a year they cut everything back to keep the trail open! The amazing root structure is definitely what has aloud this tree to survive so long!
No this is an Eastern white Cedar (Thuja occidentalis) Commonly found throughout Ontario, Canada I do know the species you are referring to and it does have similar resemblance to the juniper! Commonly referred to as the red cedar by locals around here!

No this is an Eastern white Cedar
(Thuja occidentalis)
