I remember the two years they couldn't get to Dakar (for safety reasons), so they drove Paris to Cape Town and Paris-Moscow-Beijing. There was a car that punctured a fuel tank in Kasakhstan and a random nomad fixed it with some ox hide.

Even though it's called Rally Dakar (previously named Paris-Dakar Rally, Dakar (Senegal) hasn't been the finish line since 2007. 2008 rally was cancelled one day before the intended start date, due to concerns over a possible terrorist attack aimed at the competitors. The rally was cancelled on 4 January 2008, due to safety concerns in Mauritania, following the killing of four French tourists there on Christmas Eve, December 2007.
From 2009 till 2019 Dakar Rally was held in South America and from 2020 to present day in Saudi Arabia.

I can remember January 1982 Mark Thatcher, went missing for six days in the Sahara whilst driving a Peugeot 504 in the Paris-Dakar Rally. They were declared missing on 12 Jan
On 14 January, the Algerian military spotted Thatcher's party 31 miles off course. This caused international embarrassment to his mother. The Prime Minister insisted on paying £2,000 personally towards the cost of the search.

@@legojasper1341Yes, this is correct, the truck that overtook the car... that did not end well only a little bit further down the line.
Also though; I'm not sure, but was it twin-engine? I don't think so. I know what's being referred to. There was a twin engine truck in Dakar and there was also a legendary overtaking of a car by a truck, but these are actually separate things as I recall. Because the reason they were able to make a twin engine truck is you could only have one engine per cabin as per the rules so they just built a twin-cabin truck, and the truck that overtook the Peugeot was not the twin-cabin truck.

The motorbike riding is not only physically demanding, its outright dangerous! Most accidents in the Dakar are relativly harmless, even if a car or truck flips. They have cages and all that, its mandatory. But if the biker fall it quickly gets nasty, and it takes some time until they can get medivacced. A number of bikers have died in the Dakar over the years. Not as many as in the TT, but still.

Originally the rally started in Paris and finished in Dakar. Then it went full bonkers with Paris-Dakar-Paris rally. For a couple of years it was in south america, but the organizers decided to reverse back to the old format. Unlike other rallies they have a couple of vehicle classes going at the same time. And when there is no road, they have to navigate (like crossing the sand dunes).

In my opinion and I may be wrong Baha while rough, is far more a SPEED event than survival. Of course go fast and break things FAST.
The Dakar event is a multi-day long gruelling challenge through many various terrains. It is truely mainly a SURVIVAL / ENDURANCE event. As much vehicle/motor bike as driver, co-driver and rider. But not only tough on the competotors but generally as severe on support teams/vehicles.
Over the years it has shifted location many times. Originally starting Paris, down to North Africa, travel many different Africa areas. However unstabilities and physical life threatening dangers of North Africa, and always, then, finishing in DAKAR. After many years and also building bad reaction to running down French and Spanish roads, in severely modified motor vehicles. The event moved to far locations, for example even to South America, FAR from claasic Paris-Dakar, to finish at west coastal places for example after covering diverse terrain, including very high altitudes, saping performance of engines, and even having breathing issues for people involved, and even tag along spectators.
Worth watching far morevof this, both old classic and recent times.
Always has been a fascinating event, not as well covered by TV and media in general, though some reporting and video has appeared. Often though subscription channels, and later highlight video releases tend to be best by far.

Baja 1000 vs Dakar Rally - which of the two is the tougher competition? The Dakar Rally dishes up the most horrible conditions one can imagine. Soaring heat, blinding sandstorms, wild animals, sometimes booby traps and people shooting at you (referring to “older” times when event was run in Africa).
And that 15 days in a row, 9'000 plus kilometers with 300km to 800km per day as so called timed “specials”. We choose #TheDakar as the most challenging off-road race on the planet.
With the Dakar considered the world’s most hardcore off-road race, the Baja 1000 runs a very close second place and perhaps surpasses it in several areas. At the end of the day is it like comparing apples and oranges.
We selected the Dakar because of length time and distance wise. As #RobbyGordon ones stated “Dakar is like running for 2 weeks every day a Baja 500”

Speaking of bikes, motorcycle riders are largely considered to be the most badass Dakar racers as a whole, given the difficulty and the conditions. But while a good portion run with the support of a team or a crew, there is a subset of riders that earn the most respect just by finishing this race, even if it's at the bottom of the leaderboard : "malle moto" riders.
Dakar calls it "Originals", but it's commonely named "malle moto" in the rally-raid community.
Basically, you run without the support of a team and do everything yourself. The race organizers issue you a 22 gallon metal trunk (called "malle" in French, hence the name, since Dakar was created by a french guy). In said trunk you pack in your tools, spare parts and consumables. Your are also allowed a tent, a suitcase and a set of spare wheels. All this gear is transported in a logistics truck by the race organizers from bivouac to bivouac, but outside of that you are not allowed any kind of outside help. From racing by day to setting up your tent, repairing your bike, unpacking, repacking and everything that comes with it during the evening or even late at night and at the break of dawn, you have to do everything yourself. And it is BRUTAL. But it's also a good way to race the Dakar "on a budget" if you're a very motivated amateur.
Even Fernando Alonso, who raced the Dakar himself in 2020 in a car, said he admires malle moto riders.
If you want to discover more about this I recommend Lyndon Poskitt's series of videos on Dakar 2018.

The Dakar rallies were relocated to Saudi Arabia in the Noughties due to fears about islamist terrorism in Western Africa. The Africa Eco Race took its place, doing the original route frm Paris via Morocco, Mali, Senegal. Worth a look, too! 🤗
And yes, the rallies are brutal on the motorcycle riders. They have to be super well trained and poses top notch physical stamina. Falls and bike drops are normal for them, too, so they really end up bruised and battered after the rallies.
And way too many lose their lives. In the 2024 Dakar, Spanish Carles Falcon sustained fatal injuries, in the 2023 Morocco Desert Challenge Dutch Rider Braam van der Wouden died from a heat stroke. One out off two of the big rallies seems to see one lose his life. At some point the top speed for the bikes got limited so riders wouldn't dash through the dunes at 220 kph anymore, but the risks are plenty.

The 2024 Dakar rally is almost 8000 kilometer (5000 miles) through the Saudi Arabian deserts, with the event itself taking around 10-15 days :) I loved to watch the Paris-Dakar rally, as it was called then, when I was a kid. The Dakar rally and I share our year of birth although it was 90% just the sun and the sand and the freedom of navigating your way through such terrain with a host of other vehicles, all the same time that really drew me to it. It really is a fenomenal race to watch.

All this no longer has anything to do with the Paris-Dakar of the early years. Where factory cars and amateur cars rubbed shoulders (Rolls-Royce, Citroen CX, Renault 20, etc.). It was the same with the motorcycles and the trucks were incredible. All these beautiful people set off after Christmas, crossed France and took the ferry to cross the Mediterranean towards Algiers. This is where the serious race began and ended on the beaches of Dakar.

This years winner in the car class, Carlos Sainz Sr, used to drive Escort Cosworths in the WRC in the 90's.
I posted some videos of one of his old WRC car that somehow ended up in Norway in your Discord when you did the video on the Sierra Cosworth.
This year he raced for Audi in the Dakar.

Dakar isn't what it used to be. back in the day if you finished, you already "won".
Of course I understand safety concerns, but that was this whole event's point, to make it through the Sahara, as fast as possible, and hopefully alive.

It´s a shame it doesn't go from Paris to Dakar like it used to.
In 2009 the moved it to South America then in 2020 they move it again to the Middle-East.
But they kept the Dakar name even though it really has nothing to do with the original Dakar rally.

Riding a motorcycle for that long (amongst other reasons, stability for one) is also why you see some riders standing up... simply to keep joints and muscles from locking up.

One of the big things people don’t realise with Dakar is the setup. It’s an international and host country commitment. There is even full mobile hospital facilities on the race. Full surgeries and specialist to deal with all critical injury conditions. Bivouac is like a small town.

The only downside of Dakar is that russians win most races in truck category. It is for 2 reasons. Kamaz stole tatra´s patents, and the second one is that kamaz team received huge financial aid from the regime, while tatra team is just depending on it´s sponsors.

The Audi is a Hybrid without the gas engine engaging the wheels. The engine runs at max efficiency at a near constant RPM when needed to charge the battery and electrify the motor. when going slow it shuts down and runs electric only, unless the battery is low, then you hear the engine still "screaming" like they're going fast but the car is slow or stopped. Bit odd at times.

There were times when Dakar meant Paris - Dakar, there where times when the Dakar took place in South America and there were times when the event sold its soul and went to Saudi Arabia.
Guess what time we're living in right now. :(

One of the special things on the Dakar (or Dakar type rallies maybe) is that your maintenance team also has to run the main course to be available at the next stop.
