I'd love an ending where Frodo says to Sam at the end that he was so embarrised he found it that he needs Sam to take it and pretend he found The Ring that Frodo lost, and Frodo will be on the ship so he won't have to live through the embarrissment. Maybe say, "You're our only hope, Sam. I'm hopeless"

Funny thing is that this could be what couldve happened. The ring has a will of its own and "ran away" from gollum which caused bilbo to find it. They either did this on purpose or was a happy oversight. Either way its still pretty cool.

This proves your point. But this is where my confusion comes from... In the Swedish translation from 1959/61, he says "my children". This translation is based on the 1st or 2nd print of the book. Swedish had a new translation made in 2004/2005, again based on older english prints. Again, Legolas says "my children" in this newer translation. So I'm going to need to see the earlier publications of Return in English before I can know if its a mistranslation or an editing issue from later publications.
