To alter a single note of Beethoven's score is an infringement, an imposition and a desecration of Beethoven. To change multiple bars of notes of Beethoven's masterpiece is beyond egregious.
No, not at all. Otherwise it is pointless to have a conductor. It is better to play it the way you want correctly than the way Beethoven intended to incorrectly. Things changed. Instrument materials changed. Seating changed, number of players changed, etc. The orchestra itself in the hall becomes 1 single grand instrument played by the conductor. The conductor plays that instrument to its strengths. A string guitar is different than a classical, different than a Spanish, etc... This also keeps the music fresh. Also, if it does not sound good, Beethoven will not be blamed. The conductor and the orchestra will.
