"Breaking Point": Cities Struggle with Increasing Asylum Seekers; U.S. Foreign Policy Linked to Rise

- A sharp increase in the number of people attempting to cross into the United States is straining resources in border communities, as thousands of asylum seekers arrive at the southern U.S. border each day seeking safety from violence, conflict, extreme poverty and the impacts of the climate crisis. Congressmember Jesús "Chuy" García of Illinois says decades of U.S. military interventions, sanctions and the war on drugs "are all important factors" in what is driving the migration, particularly from South and Central America. "We need a system that responds both compassionately and responds to the root causes of why people come to this country," he says. We also speak with Fernando García, founder and executive director of the Border Network for Human Rights in El Paso, who says the lack of leadership from the federal government is causing hardship along the border for both asylum seekers and local communities struggling to welcome the newcomers. "Nothing has been done - not by this administration, obviously, and much less from the previous administration. So we are seeing the same situations over and over," he says.

Sanctions only harm a country's leaders if the starving masses manage to overthrow it. If not, they just starve.
Throughout the 19th century the US was the dumping ground of Europe and it absolutely thrived off of it. Most of history indicates that mass immigration and integration is a good thing for a society. The key seems to be accepting migrants and devoting resources to integrating them into society. Usually the societal cost of integrating migrants is far less than raising children.
There is this notion that the problems we have with mass migration is because migration is inherently bad which is quite a conclusion to jump to in my opinion. I think it's much more likely that it means the culture subsidies, general welfare and integration infrastructure is being underfunded and mismanaged.
Whenever a system isn't working well we should blame the people in charge of it, not the people suffering from it.

First of all, Venezuelans are being threatened by another country...the U.S., because of Republicans in Congress and formerly, the White house. Blame Republicans, and Joe Manchin, for the struggling. Child Tax Credit not renewed. Child poverty doubled because of that. Medicare for All, not an option (some Dems too). Failure of $15 an hour minimum wage, 50 repubs (8 Dems too) in Senate against it.
Furthermore, America has both the ability and the capacity to welcome more people.

What many people don't see is the American elderly are going to get if they are lucky a 3% increase in their retirement benefits. The true cost of living increases in the last year has increased way beyond the probable 3% increase. Most of these elderly were living poorly before all this inflation in the last couple of years. Our working class who work for miserable wage as bad off as our elderly. These two groups make up a large majority of our population. They do or have done all the hard work and they are being economically squeezed as never before. We have maybe 2 million of our own people of all ethnicities who are homeless! Why are we taking in so many people beyond our capacity to care for when we have not done a good job with the poor we already have. Would it not make more sense to deal with the needy people we already have before we allow in even more. In most parts of the US cold weather is just around the corner. And we have people including migrants on the streets with no proper shelter. So how is the so called fixing immigration to allow even more people in going to help? As it is far too many of our elderly have to decide between eating or paying rent, utilities etc. In the end tax payers pay for all of this and a majority of Americans think we need to put the brakes on illegal migration. Many small cities in the US have taken in huge numbers of immigrants over the last 40 years yet sanctuary cities like New York are crying hard about they are overwhelmed by the migrants they are getting but as a percent of population they have taken in far less than many smaller cities like mine. Even besides all of the migrants we have taken in here locally we have had larger cities nearby shipping dozens of their homeless to live on our streets as well. At what point to we say deal with the problems we already have. Worst of all we are borrowing heavily to fund the things we are already doing. We are like the drunken sailor with a credit card with a $5,000 limit. He just keeps on drinking until he has reached his credit limit! In the name of compassion we are drastically reducing the standard of living for all working class Americans and even worse making them pay for all of the fiscal responsibility. At some point there will be a terrible price to pay for not having any fiscal responsibility. One last thing if we were not acting as a safety valve for Venezuelas Maduro and other bad leaders in Latin America these folks who are coming here would force change in their own countries. So all we are doing is delaying the inevitable but correct actions that need to be taken to replace these leaders. No matter what happens as we continue our downhill spiral China is overtaking the US as world leader which will further reduce our economic situation. So in the end these people will have nowhere to go and will have to deal with their leaders and either reform or replace their governments. Something to think about for all of us. I hear folks constantly chattering over what it means to be an American. We are on a high speed train to third world status and non of us except for the wealthy will have the comforts we think we should have! If it gets real bad we will be fighting amongst ourselves for the few resources we have left!

I honestly moved here to Costa Rica on inauguration day 2020. I follow the news and I have witnessed migrants from Venezuela, Hati, Ecuador and Colombia moving toward the north. The Darien Gap in Panama, (A Region environmentally protected as a National Park) has been destroyed. Some of the Venezuelans openly admit Nicolas Maduro has emptied his jails and bussed prisoners to Costa Rica where transportation is arranged for them by privet entities to Nicaragua. Now the government of Costa Rica (Which has no army) is worried because many of these released criminals are remaining here.
In the past the United States had been very receptive to assisting CR if military support was needed, but today, President Rodrigo Chaves Robles says he has very little faith in American support.

The strange thing to me is that the US absolutely thrived from being the dumping ground of all the unwanted people of Europe. The big part though is that there needs to be more resources devoted to integrating them and getting them into unions and the like.

The US tax payers deserve a right to vote (via Bond Measure & Special Elections) on how many asylum & TPS seekers our cities and states can afford to accept at any given time.
Regardless of the region of origin (Latin America, Europe, MENA), the rapid influx and large volume of asylum & TPS seekers arriving at the US southern border is not sustainable for US middle class taxpayers.
In addition to our struggle to pay our own bills, the middle class tax payers also have to struggle to pay for subsidized housing, food, clothing, phone, internet, transportation, job training, public education, and healthcare to the new comers with asylum & TPS status.

The budget of the Federal Government is NOT the same as the budgets of families, communities, towns, cities, and states.

The Federal Government can/could print as much money as is necessary to make sure that all human-necessities are provided for (not to mention the fact that the Federal Government could impose price-controls, maximum-wages, and taxes on wealth and inheritance). First of all Latin American countries are nearly all democratic and people from the majority of LATAM countries can not claim to be refugees.
Second, the majority of people crossing the southern border are no longer originating in LATAM countries. They are predominantly Asians and Africans travelling to Mexico and paying a cartel to smuggle them across the border.

I am a foreigner in a LATAM country. I had to follow legal regulations to achieve my right to stay. I have a business and employ Venezuelans (among others). The Venezuelans aspire to claim refugee status in USA despite having well paid jobs in my company! It´s insane that they will be received in the USA as if they were suffering hardship coming direct from Venezuela.

I have never supported USA's meddling with Central America and South American countries. Mexico is an exception (although it's a North American country). I think America is justified in invading Mexico and Colombia and liquidating the cartels. Also the US should with plenty of warnings be prepared to shoot those individuals attempting to invade through the border. Fair comment. I agree.. But take Mexico. With am negotiated peaceful invasion by the US a lot could be achieved. The problem is the constant influx of refugees from Latin American countries that never stops between Afghanistan and Ukraine refugees arriving over here.
The fault are the Corporations who got greedy in the Latin American countries and our own government. Our government during the Great Depression allowed a huge influx of Latin Americans and opened the doors during WWII because of the low amount of U.S. citizens involved in the war. It was wrong what happened with over 400,000 plus Latin Americans being deported when the U.S. Economy was improving after the war and not being granted U.S. citizenship for their help.
Now with the huge Homeless Crisis going on, we cannot have an influx of more immigrants regardless of what country they come from.
We will need to change the ways of the U.S. government regarding numerous social issues regarding cost of living, Corporations greed, and a better tax system for the Wealthy and Powerful before we can have a manageable immigration policy for large amounts of immigrants.

Immigration doesn't need to be illegal, it didn't used to be illegal. The Founding Fathers would have been illegal immigrants under our current laws. Maybe the Native Americans should have deported them? Laws shouldn't exist unless they have a good reason to. Humans have migrated all over the world for our entire history, and then all of a sudden about a century ago countries started restricting their borders, so they could discriminate against certain groups of people and force them to do labor that they themselves didn't want to do. Immigration law has roots in imperialism and racism. If you want to stop the surge of migrants, then lift sanctions, get Wall Street out of Latin America, allow them to develop their own economies, instead of exploiting them.
