That being said, avoiding guitar elbow and repetitive strain injuries is absolutely needed too. Basically, it's all a balancing act.

What I've found that helps me "practice" left hand dexterity is to learn riffs you like that are actually interesting, but can't play at speed yet. You'll be much more committed to practice. I recommend _that_ lick from Blaze Heatnix's stage theme from Mega Man X. I never thought I would get anywhere near playing that lick at speed and I'm already much better with my left hand just from that.
