- Filmed in February 1954, this is the third and final version of the number that was shot and ultimately included in "A Star Is Born." Garland apparently performed over 40 takes of this song between October 1953 and February 1954. The track was prerecorded on September 3, 1953.
Music by Harold Arlen
Arranged by Skip Martin
Orchestra directed by Ray Heindorf
Lyrics by Ira Gershwin:
The night is bitter,
The stars have lost their glitter,
The winds grow colder
And suddenly you're older,
And all because of the man that got away.
No more his eager call,
The writing's on the wall,
The dreams you dreamed have all
Gone astray.
The man that won you
Has gone off and undone you.
That great beginning
Has seen the final inning.
Don't know what happened.
It's all a crazy game!
No more that all-time thrill,
For you've been through the mill,
And never a new love will
Be the same.
Good riddance, good-bye!
Ev'ry trick of his you're on to.
But, fools will be fools,
And where's he gone to?
The road gets rougher,
It's lonelier and tougher.
With hope you burn up,
Tomorrow he may turn up.
There's just no letup the live-long night and day!
Ever since this world began
There is nothing sadder than
A one-man woman looking for
The man that got away,
The man that got away. - Розваги
Judy Garland doesn't need an oscar to prove that she's the greatest. You just have to watch and listen and you'll know it.
If this doesn't makes you cry, gives you goosebumps and shivers, you're heartless.
You can nurture, but you can't really teach what she just accomplished within those four and a half minutes. You cannot teach someone the "intangible arts." That's just PURE GIFT.
Having seen all three stagings (featured on the DVD), I'm immediately aware of two things: this final take is the only one shot with darker, smokier lighting, and it is the only version where Judy reads and vocalizes the sheet music of "The Man That Got Away," before belting out the perfectly shot, 4-minute single-take number. It looks, sounds, and smells like a real after-hours jam session- and in the center of it is this tiny little woman with powerhouse pipes, in her so-called 'comeback' vehicle, putting a stamp forever on an Oscar-nominated lead performance for the ages.
Just close your eyes and listen. Pure talent. The pathos, empathy, sympathy, longing, wanting, needing. It's all there. Absolutely nothing like it today. Bravo Judy!
Judy was robbed of the Oscar !!! Her performance is flawless. This is one of my.fav. songs of all time . She was my Mother's favorite, so at the age of 4 we saw Judy in person. I stood on a chair as she came down the aisle singing in her Tux. I can remember it as if it were yesterday. So JUDY was the 1st star I saw in person, &.JERRY LEWIS was my 2nd.
What a menory friend, to see the greatest entertainer ever.
Over the decades, the songs and stars will come and go, but this recording and this number by this singer will just last, forever.
Such a tragic story, but what an amazing voice. she truly was a star.
+Satine8541 She sure was. Unforgettable. A huge talent. God bless Judy. You are truly missed.
She will never be forgotten.
JUDY is GREAT. She knows exactly what she's singing about. It's a quality that great artists have ... the ability to ring true and to connect directly with us and takes us with them on a journey.
The thing I love about this is not just Judy, who is formidable, but that she is with a top notch jazz ensemble. It is full on jazz, with a torch singer doing the lead. It just knocks me out every time.
Single greatest performance in a musical of all time.
Saw her in SF right after Carnegie Hall show....the most amazing night I have ever spent in a theater. She had 2,500 people right in the palm of her hand.
What a treasured memory! I'm so glad you saw her. She was just one of those miracles of creation.
When one considers not only her peerless singing, but her acting, her dancing, and her longevity, combined with the way she was abused and disrespected by the industry, She is the most amazing "entertainer" to ever grace our senses.
Pop Sublime: The one and only Judy Garland.
Absolutely agree! Every time I listen to this I'm in awe of Judy's talent - how lucky we are that Warners made this movie when she was at her best. A classic display of what "real" talent is all about.
Look at Judy’s eyes when she sings the phrase “for you’ve been through the mill”. I mean look at them. Those are the eyes of a woman/artist who is in another realm. And this has nothing to do with drugs. This has to do with an artist who has reached a level of skill, discipline and feeling that she can go into abandonment, into ecstasy (ekstasis - out of place) and remain completely anchored and focused on what she is doing. A star is born - super nova.
Electrifying! She was at her best. She deserved an Academy Award. James Mason too. A Star is born is a masterpiece.
There is no greater musical number in a movie anywhere anytime ever. Garland shines like a supernova. Perhaps I should say no greater performance by a single performer in a movie. It is one of the greatest tunes ever written to begin with - but in Judy's hands it's perfection.
The best acting can lose an oscar but this acting will never be forgotten!
"Take it, honey."
And does she ever!! In the dark, in the back, in the wee hours with the musicians, she modestly warms up her vocal chords at 00:55 with the sheet music, then delivers a mega-watt torch song of such clarity, such pristine truth and beauty, that it is almost rude to eavesdrop on it. But that was Judy- sure as you're born. This scene alone is worth the Oscar nomination.
She TAKES IT!!
Takes it to a level that's never been to by anyone else since
you got that right!😉
If the soul had or has a sound it would sound like Judy’s vocal.I call her the percolator. All the emotion that one’s unknowingly pushes down in order to get things done throughout the day start to percolate when hearing the opening notes as Judy sings. Then when she starts to open up her vocal chords , that clear pristine hits notes without force and her notes spill out your emotions that seemed tucked away spill out with or without your permission. You find yourself profoundly moved , your heart and soul touched as she reached “ live long night aaaand Daaaaaaay. Holding the note the way you hold your breath when you cry, then gasping for air while Judy doesn’t even seem to take a breath ……” Ever since ….. Judy’s voice is the whole deal. At you ,with you . When she sang Rainbow 8 minutes in to the Oz movie she had our love and her death will never stop that . Thank you Judy for reminding all of us what it feels like to be human.
Exquisite pain. Transcendent beauty. Too much! There aren't words sufficient to describe.
Exquisite is the word.
dayle 2u I am a lover of musicals and I think this is my all-time favorite number. Everything comes together perfectly, music, arrangement, cinematography and Garland's amazing voice. It seems like every time she sang, she poured her whole heart and soul into the song. There are two great versions of this film, the 1937 version with Fredric March and Janet Gaynor, and this 1954 version with Garland and James Mason. This is my favorite, largely because of Garland. Her "Born in a Trunk" number is also sublime.
Thomas Leary She's almost leaving blood on the floor he he. It went to the farthest place, and then kept going, creating a NEW place. I can't *shaking it off*.
dayle 2u The number gives me goosebumps. If I had to choose the three best female popular singers of the 20th century, it would be Judy, Ella Fitzgerald and Streisand. She was only 4'11", but her voice was twenty feet tall.
Thomas Leary I strongly urge a viewing of the documentary Amy. Not to recount the tragic addiction issues, but to really appreciate the jazz singer she was, lost far too young.
Man, she lived this song. Her voice was so powerful and did she have some lungs on her? Even at lower volumes it was powerful. My mother just loved Judy Garland. I saw her do this song on YT where she was on some TV show and she was in her 40s and that was fantastic, too. But she did have a lot of trouble with men in her life. She lived this song.
An icon, inspiration, no one can sing as heart felt as she!!! We love you Judy, always!
Lisa Carlier right
Phenomenal artistry, phenomenal screen presence, phenomenal technical ability. Judy Garland was a phenomenon of talent.
Just saw this clip
for the umpteenth time
never ceases to send
a chill up my spine.
it's brillaint. I remember when I was a film student, we were all a bunch of hippies, but Judy Judy Judy slayed us. This is the most awesome musical number on film in American film history.
Her wailing voice makes me want to cry.
+Aves Raggiana Yeah, very similar in emotion to that of Edith Piaf singing "Et pourtant." I maybe wrong. But it would seem to me you'd have to have an inner turmoil going inside you before you could produce such a sound.
+Jay Young You are so brilliant for bringing up the similarity between Judy and the glorious Edith ... born to sing like birds sing. Insanely, like songbirds on the wire that I see out my window each morning this April. Little beings that simply explode with music, naturally. I have never heard anyone else sing as bird-like as Judy and Edith. Nope. No one else. Streisand is too stiff and forced, Celine Dion is too automated. When Celine Dion sings in her native language, she approaches the natural beauty of Judy and Edith. Otherwise, no way.
One for the best songs ever recorded from any era
I'm fascinated with the way this movie was filmed. The lighting and camera work feels a lot more naturalistic and European.
Judy should have won the Oscar
This woman's voice was STUNNING! DAMN!
Please release the ENTIRE movie in HD 1080! Love this so much
Such a powerful and beautiful movie. Ever day I think what an honour it would of been to be in Judy's generation what an era !
I'm told that Garland's vocal on this one, as was the practice of the day in Hollywood films, was dubbed in by Garland later on. It was how things were done. But it sure as hell SOUNDS live here. The immediacy, the power, the range. I confess when I was first told it was not recorded "on set" I did not believe it. Magnificent.
holy shit.
She was (and still is) a true queen. Love you, Judy. Your songs always speak to my heart
This song man. No words for the emotion
Exactly what happened to me during my 21st birthday. Tragic first. Ocean of tears. Thank you, Judy! And poster..
On this day in 1954 {September 29th} the movie musical "A Star Is Born" had its world premiere in Hollywood, California...
One month later on October 11th it opened in New York City, NY...
Leading lady July Garland was nominated for an Academy Award for 'Best Actress' {winner was Grace Kelly for "The Country Girl"} and leading actor James Mason was nominated for 'Best Actor' {winner was Marlon Brando for "On The Waterfront"}...
R.I.P. Ms. Garland {1922 - 1969} and Mr. Mason {1909 - 1984}...
Sensational, electrifying, incredible the song leave you breathless. I cried and cried.
This is priceless! I always learn vocal techniques and power watching and listening to Miss Garland--the queen!
Idk why but my favorite part of at 2:34. The expression on her face and her head turn when she sings "...you've been through the mill" cracks me up. Like a lightbulb went off or something. It's this sad song and she starts to smile for a second. LOL.
+Ahseeuh I've always felt that her smiling during her sad songs made them even sadder.
pure class and God given.
One of my favorite songs sung by a legend....
The smooth as silk voice of James Mason comprehensively stunned into silence. He could only sit and admire a masterpiece of singing from Judy Garland
Judy Garland, another Superstar for the ages imo. A real pro. Given uppers and downers by the movie studio system from when she was a little girl it's no wonder she had substance abuse problems. But what a true icon she will always be.
And where's he gone to!!! Send chills up my spine. Thank You Judy Garland my dear for inspiring me.. This is one of the finest songs sang in a movie so far!
my favorite scene from all movies i have ever seen xxxxxxxxxxx
Gosh this movie is so powerful! Judy deserved that award in A Star Is Born over Grace Kelly in The Country Girl!!
When I saw this clip on Entertainment Tonight because they were restoring the entire film, I knew my life changed. As someone said, you can't teach that. You either have it or you don't. Likewise, you either understand the significance of this performance or you don't.
This is a great movie because you really do believe in her undying love for him. Judy is Mrs. Norman Maine and it's a tribute to both her and James Mason that we believe that. Movie magic.
One of Gods greatest gifts!
If you study the musicians faces I think they knew they were making GREAT art!
happy birthday darling judy i'll always remember you this way
Donnie Mrkacek Thank you
LARGER THAN LIFE!!! God bless your soul Judy
I have loved and always will love Judy Garland.
The entire song is outrageously brilliant if you haven't heard it....
Judy Garland ~ "The Man That Got Away"
made the hairs on my neck stand, it's so amazing!!
Gorgeous lyric by Ira Gershwin.
This is my favorite by Garland. She is really an American Edith Piaf in this song. By the way, is this an Arlen masterpiece? Anyone?
+Jay Young Do you mean was the song composed by Arlen? Yes, it was!
Allen Gumm Thank you. Are you, by chance, related to Judy Garland? Just askin.

Thanks for this quality print. Looks and sounds great.
Can you believe Three Coins in a Fountain beat out this for best song? Hollywood hated this woman. I never understood why.
Le talent, le charisme et une présence extraordinaire...
Elle a tout !
Jaimie Sommers Steve QANenlson eddy
The only Star is Born that really counts.
Every time I sing along to this, I almost cry...that's how amazing and beautiful this song is
Quintessential Garland at her best!

Amazing Judy!!!!!!!!!
Powerful powerful voice
best thing ever put on film xxx
This never stops being so beautiful and so sad.
They're remaking this movie, AGAIN!!!
There's no need, WE NEED a Judy Garland feature film biopic.
I agree. (Much of the film I COULD GO ON SINGING [1963] accurately shows the real life Judy in her concert years.)
I come from the future to tell you: do not be afraid. It was spectacular
@@devinsymonds1602 🤣🤣🤣
Well, Lady Gaga was perfect 👌
What a workout for lighting and the focus puller. Perfect dark, smoky club feel.
great great great Judy!
one of her all time best!
My favourite of Judy's x
My auntie used to sing this
What a brilliant sequence! One continuous shot, too! She was one-of-a-kind.
NO ONE can do it quite like her!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👌
The Greatest singer ever along with Ella Fitzgerald!
One word....WOW
MAGNIFICENT.
she was beautiful!! in song, spirit and in life!! thank you Judy for being here! 💋💋💋💋
Amazing voice/talent!!!
how beautiful is this...amazing x
Thank you so much for uploading this. So incredibly wonderful.

DIVINITY NEVER FADE AWAY...
And that's how it's done.
Love her !!!
There out there, singing.
all i can say is what louis b. mayer once said.."the kids got talent!"
you better believe it!
She kills this shit. Literally, every time I watch it.
Chills!
Chills.
La amo me hizo tan feliz en mi infancia y ahora de joven
WOW😍😍
Tommy Noonan (the piano player who played Danny in the movie) never became an A-List star, but I think he's the only actor to costar opposite two of the biggest icons in movie history--Judy Garland ("A Star Is Born") and Marilyn Monroe ("Gentlemen Prefer Blondes").
Happy birthday judy
Wow,
P. S. I Love You
One continuous shot of over 3.5 minutes!
Take THAT, MTV!!! lol
