Very cool I do the very same thing for my DF90A. Even down to stuffing rags under the oil filter. I know a lot of folks call for tearing out the cowling on the lower unit so that you don't have oil dripping in behind it, but I find it so much easier to catch it than to do all of that additional work.
I do like the gear oil that's emerald green it's a little bit more translucent and I can check it in a glass jar periodically when I sample it.
    Great video Justin!

Hi. I have the same questions/enhancements to the video: 1) Why not drain the old first BEFORE removing filter? Should save some spillage. 2) Need to first lube the filter gasket, with a drop of oil, before installing. Otherwise, nice video!

Nice video. Couple of thoughts. I rarely old school the oil change. Best for me is vacuuming out most of the oil through the dip stick port and then opening the oil plug. Saves the mess. Also I prefer the Amsoil Marine for 10w-40 and gear oil that won’t void your warranty. OEM for everything else.

Got to get yourself the oil filter magnet they work and theyll save your engine dont want the small metal fragment particles floating around in your engine

Thanks for sharing but I will say, I use to talk against oil extractors, but now it swear by the method. After I suck the oil out I take the drain plug out and barely get a dribble of oil. A lot faster, less mess/clean up and easier to handle the used oil.
A marine mechanic told me that he fixes a lot of engines with blown gaskets because people put too much oil in.

API SJ oil supposedly had higher zinc. My car made in fall of 2000 has it in bold print. I've noticed that some small engine oils and motorcycle oil is still available in this grade but is somewhat costly and I like synthetic 0w30 down south simply for less soot n sludge in the head with double cams and hydraulic lifters. Mobile 1 0w30 and that's getting very hard to find. Oh, I see you have tappets and yeah I'd just use the 10w40 or something in that ballpark but with zinc and I'm sure that's what you are buying. A custom blended option by the manufacturer.

Thanks for the video. Question. Wouldn't it be better if you drained the oil out before taking off the oil filter? I would think there would be less oil in the filter. Just curious.

Did I miss the part where you spread a little oil on the gasket of the new oil filter??? Just sayin I'm paying attention

Because the oil filter goes on upside down there’s always plenty of residual oil on the flange but good call though.

@@capt.justinnapior9107 I always wipe the surface clean and then apply oil to the surface before spinning on the new filter. For both cars and outboard 4 strokes.

Great Vid! One question, I just changed oil on my 2021 Suzuki 70 HP for the first time (original owner) and there were two filter gaskets on the hex head drain plug. 'Anyone else experienced this? I only installed one new replacement gasket.

Looks like this process is messy. Would not want to change oil while boat is in the water. I would use an oil suction pump.

I've had several Mercurys and sterndrives. Still have a 50 hp 2 stroke. I absolutely love my Suzuki 90/4. Quiet, smooth and awesome.

What a horrible spot and direction for that oil filter.
