That’s crazy! I live in Alaska we are surrounded by volcanoes. I remember when Mt Spurr erupted, which is right across the inlet from anchorage. Sent ash everywhere! I was riding my bike around in it.😂
Kilauea eruptions have been been mostly pretty sedate for the past century or so, though punctuated with some pretty spectacular fountaining events. Look up the Kilauea iki eruption for some really impressive fountains! Explosive activity has been extremely rare, though there is plenty of evidence that there are periodic cycles of explosive activity in the geologic record.
This observation point is about a 1/2 mile from the vent, so even the so-so telephoto lens that came with my so-so camera was able to get fairly good video. The trick was achieving proper focus with the contrast being so high.
