The entire “Hi Infidelity” album is a banger. Song was a huge hit. There were three or four hits in the album. It was released in the fall of ‘80 and was one of the biggest sellers of 1981. It went platinum many times over.

This song was Gary Richrath's answer to fellow band co-leader Kevin Conin's "Keep On Loving You"(#1 in 1981) - both were going through difficulties in their relationships, Cronin with his wife Denise and Richrath with his girlfriend Debbie. Said Richrath: "When I wrote that, I woke up one night, half asleep, and sat down in front of the TV. There was a soap opera on it. I was just sitting there, strumming a guitar, thinking, 'God, these guys' relationships are worse than mine.' I just sat there and sang vocals about the effects of gossip and relationships breaking up, which was what was on the tube and all that was similar to what was going on in my life."
The Hi Infidelity track "In Your Letter" also deals with a cheating woman. Kevin Cronin's wife Denise offered a retort in a 1981 People magazine story "They should have called the album Wives on the Run. The band gets all this sympathy and is excused for all that goes on when they’re on the road. No one even mentions the problems of the wives who are home alone."
Originally, this was called "Don't Let Me Down," with lyrics geared more toward men than the final result.

This song would have probably charted higher if not for up the scorching guitar 🎸 solo. The more a song rocks out the less popular it is with the masses. I don't understand how that works exactly, because everyone I know seems to like to rock out to a good rockin song. But evidently the masses like the mellow stuff.

I brought two nurses with me. One on each site to hold me up. There was NO way I was going to miss this show. I had been following them since the early 70s.

"Take It on the Run" is a song by American rock band REO Speedwagon off the band's ninth studio album Hi Infidelity (1980). The song was written by lead guitarist Gary Richrath. "Take It on the Run" was the follow-up single behind the group's number-one hit, "Keep on Loving You". The single went gold on April 17, 1989. "Take It on the Run" has appeared on dozens of "various artists" compilation albums, as well as several REO Speedwagon greatest-hits albums.[1] The 2017 song "Messin' Around" by Pitbull featuring Enrique Iglesias interpolates "Take It on the Run".[2]

what a great song, you can really get lost in the sauce on that one! and they changed the tone on the backup guitar during the guitar solo, gritty and really hits hard. the drumming is simple but perfectly executed and sounds great. definately one where you are hitting the crash cymbals while they are playing it at the supermarket hehe.

You cant tune a fish was a good album and I think Hi Infidelity was the first album in the which this song was on. I looked, yeah, SO this was the first song on HI Infidelity and so the album was based on this song where he sings about his girls infidelity. lol I remember back then, the big ad in music was Hi Fidelity speakers, so they made a pun on that for this song is the way I took it.lol

Look up this video, a must watch best song and version ever by REO Speedwagon. The live version was more popular and replaced the studio version of this song. Unreal that never happens.

Fantastic song! The entire album High Infidelity, released in 1980 was a masterpiece! Not a wasted song on it! It brings me back to my high school days! It is a travesty that REO Speedwagon is not in the rock and roll hall of fame and rap group OutKast is! Grand Funk and Styx should also be in!

I think this song was featured in an episode of Cobra Kai where Daniel and Johnny are in a car driving around.

The late Gary Richrath was the greatest guitarist ever. He wrote this song about what he and his wife were going through..
