- We're chugging along with view request week as I nosedive fret first into Lovebites. I had never heard of the band before but so many people said I needed to check them out. I admit I don't listen to a ton of power metal but maybe I should because this band shreds!

Haruna has had the stars on her drums since her time in the heavy metal band Destrose. The stars are her trademark. If there are stars on a drum kit, it belongs to Haruna Ishikawa. In general, it can be said that all drummers in the big Japanese female heavy metal bands have very extensively equipped drums. And the women know how to use them.

Lovebites has been around since 2016, and the women became more famous worldwide after performing at several major festivals, mainly in Europe, starting in

In 2020, their career was abruptly interrupted by Corona. But they masterfully overcame the crisis, got married and had babies. In 2021 the founder Miho left the band for personal reasons and it went into a hiatus which lasted until the end of 2022. In the fall of 2022 they found a young fantastic bass player and in 2023 they released a new LP. The new LP reached the 5th place in the Japanese charts. Japan is the 2nd largest music market in the world and it is very rare that in these times a rock band comes so far forward.

Congratulations, you just found the most talented metal band to come along in decades. You just saw their most reacted-to video, “Holy War”: In their first five years of existence, they put themselves on par with the greatest bands of metal’s golden age. They recently went on a year-and-a half hiatus while they waited out the pandemic and searched for a new bassist, after their founder and original bassist left the band for personal reasons. They announced the new bassist in October 2022 (see below) and dropped their first new song on December 22. Their new album, “Judgement Day”, was released two months later.
They did their first live performances in more than two years in summer of 2023, with their new bassist Fami. Their very first show was commemorated on the DVD “Knocking on Heaven’s Gate”. They have posted four performances from that DVD:

Some background:
They were formed in 2016 from the remnants of a legendary all-girl Japanese metal band called Destrose (yes, all-girl metal has been a thing in Japan since at least 1981). Miho (bass, chief headbanger and founder of the band) had a vision of a new band in the style of the great European bands of the golden age of metal. She recruited her former bandmate Haruna (drums, 4'9" “pocket nuclear reactor”); they needed two world-class guitarists, and so they went and found Midori and Miyako, who were with other groups. The four of them then found Asami, the singer, who was doing soul and blues at the time (she was also trained in ballet).
Miyako has composed a little more than half of their music, with Miho composing a lot of their thrashier songs in collaboration with Mao, the lead composer of another band called Lightbringer. Midori has also been getting into the act, and they regularly perform a song written by Haruna as well. Asami writes most of the lyrics and is also getting involved in composing.
In mid-2021, Miho left the band she had founded, for personal reasons. They went on hiatus while they searched for a new bassist, and during that time, two of them had babies, even as the band were writing and rehearsing their new album. They recently announced the new bassist, Fami, who is a young phenom and herself a composer and multi-instrumentalist. The instrumentalists studied all the great historical metal bands going back to Purple and Sabbath, through Maiden, Priest, Metallica, Helloween, Slayer etc. They have incorporated some of the best of each of those bands into their arsenal, and have created a sound that is fresh and cutting edge while paying tribute to the old masters. They toured with Dragonforce in 2019, and word from those in attendance was that next time around, it will be the ladies headlining.
They do everything from soulful power ballads to heavy thrash. Almost every song includes face-melting solos by Miyako and Midori. The two guitarists are quite different in style and tone. Midori (blonde ponytail) is the extrovert and speed demon; Miyako is the introvert, with the more soulful feel (though she can also shred like crazy). Midori uses a cleaner tone, Miyako uses more distortion, pinch harmonics and pedal effects. The contrast makes their duets rich and dynamic. It doesn’t hurt that either one can smoke most of the shredders in the classic metal bands. As another reviewer said, "It seems criminal these two are allowed to be in the same band."

Miyako is also a virtuoso concert pianist, and was headed for a career in classical music, before picking up the guitar. She is self-taught on the guitar. Well these musicians are so much more than Power, try Thrash (no one plays it better live) Prog, Rock, classical piano, ballet steps and acoustic guitars, etc.. They are insanely talented and are an experience especially LIVE where they truly shine. They often surprise but will never disappoint.

Nope, definitely not. Girlschool played there in 2008, 2011 and 2012 and there are definitely more, I only cannot remember the names at the moment.

I would guess that whatever sound loss you were experiencing (such as with the double kicks and the bass getting lost in the mix) is probably due to some factor with your sound equipment or headphones, because all of the above come through nearly perfectly on every system I've listened to this on, and it is widely considered as near to a perfect live mix (same live mix crew that handles Nightwish shows) as you'll find anywhere. This concert - Five of a Kind - is renowned for the high quality of its sound mix.
Yes they are very power metal but also play thrash, straight up metal and hard rock. They can do it all. Check out Set the World on Fire for a little bells and whistles.

The main principles of the band presented by Miho, the founder and first bassist of LOVEBITES, are as follows.
①Heavy metal (basic policy)
②All English lyrics (strategy for global expansion)
③White costumes (Most metal bands wear black costumes, and if these short girls wore black costumes, they would be hidden, so they wear white costumes to contrast and stand out.)
④High heels (to compensate for short height)
Miho also thought about the visual effects on stage.

LOVEBITES did play Wacken Open Air in 2018. They were the last band on one of the side stages and were only given enough time to play five songs, but they knocked it out of the park that day. I actually bought their third album "Electric Pentagram," twice because one version comes with the CD-only live show, "Invitation to the Theater," and another version came with a DVD of that Wacken performance. They've played a number of other European festivals in the past and have a few lined up for 2024, plus they toured the UK with DragonForce back in . . . what, 2018? Something like that.
The brunette guitarist, Miyako, is also the band's pianist. She's been playing piano since she was 3 and guitar since she was 18. She also plays bass and drums to various extents. Asami, the singer, plays piano on stage every so often, but it's usually very brief and she only does accents. Midori, the blonde guitarist, can also play piano and organ, but I've never seen her do it live, have only seen very brief clips of it, and I get the impression it's not something she enjoys. Haruna, the tireless drummer, loves those star cymbals but obviously they're only for decoration. She used them in her previous band, Destrose. Don't get used to any one setup for her kit because it has changed a lot through the years, at least in terms of her cymbals. Also, she's 4' 9", the second-shortest Japanese musician I'm aware of.
LOVEBITES is primarily a power and thrash metal band, but they do have a few outliers like "Spellbound," "Frozen Serenade," and "Epilogue." I don't think they have a _bad_ original song, but I definitely like some more than others. Thanks for checking out LOVEBITES.

They are phenomenal. Best metal band to come along in decades. Elite musicians all. The 2 guitarists (Midori & Miyako) are among the best I've heard ever. Mesmerizing to watch. Tip of the iceberg with them, they just get more impressive as you dive deeper.
I enjoyed your reaction - you clearly have some knowledge of music, and you also clearly aren't one of these gushing reactors who think every song is the best song ever written in the history of music. I agree with your criticism of the mix - I think the bass is almost always too low in the mix with their songs. LOVEBITES now have a new bassist, and they do bring the bass forward in the mix a bit more now - but still not as much as I'd like. This showcases the new bassist, and is actually the FIRST song she ever performed live since joining LOVEBITES. As you will see, she was a little bit happy about it.
"Holy War" is a good song to be introduced to LOVEBITES with. As you've just seen, they are elite musicians, some of the best going around at the moment. I can make a pretty good arguement that musically, they are one of the top three metal bands on the planet (along with Dream Theater and Symphony-X). They simply don't have a bad song (what other band can you say that about), and several of their songs are legitimate masterpieces.

Here some information about them:
The band was formed in 2016 by original bassist Miho and drummer Haruna. Their first EP and album came out in 2017. So far LOVEBITES have released 4 albums, some Singles/EPs and also a bunch of DVD/Blu-ray live recordings.
Back in 2018/2019 LOVEBITES have already toured in Europe, including appearances at the major metal festivals as Wacken, Download, Bloodstock, Graspop. In 2018 they also won the Metal Hammer UK Golden Gods Award for best new band.
Then came covid, their original bass player and founder Miho quit the band for personal reasons and two babies were born. After a break LOVEBITES came back with new bassist Fami and new song „Judgement Day“ in late 2022. A new album with the same title came out in February 2023.
This year in June LOVEBITES‘ first world tour starts in Europe. In September they will play their biggest headline show ever in Tokyo. After that LOVEBITES will have their US debut …

Brilliant review. The star cymbals, they are made from old worn out cymbals and the drummer and the singer and the bassist spin them time to time. The cymbals a kind located a bit far but it is because the drummer is too small 4'9" tall. You noticed the piano. You "must" try Swan Song from the same show. They always have bass(drums) very low in the mix, which I wish they would change. Sometimes it's not easy to hear that doublebass, unless you use equalizing setup yourself, which boosts the bass in your speakers/headphones. Besides that, the mix is great.
Yeah - I've always thought the bass is way too low in the mix, especially with Miho. I find they sometimes have Fami a bit more forward in the mix.

Welcome to Lovebites! Best metal band in the world imho. They don't just do power metal. They have some amazing thrash, which are some of my favorites from them, a few ballad-like songs, and a few legitimate masterpieces. They are amazing live. I recommend checking out some more. Haruna is the drummer btw. World class. They all are.
Very observant. Indeed, you have nothing else to compare with, and when you do you will start to realise that their standard opening line “we are LOVEBITES and we play heavy metal” means exactly that. They were formed because the bassist wanted exactly what you described them as.. a European, mostly British sound but not exclusively.
Many metal fans do like to assign genres to the band but from my perspective, LOVEBITES *are* a genre. They are unlike any other band and vocally and instrumentally they have no peers. Best band this 60 plus year old has ever experienced.
They are a genre? I'm not a big genre guy, I don't care much for labels, but the "they're their own genre" thing applies more to groups like Babymetal, Gacharic Spin, and the modern era of BAND-MAID. LOVEBITES is primarily power or thrash metal with a few outliers. "Judgement Day" is a good album, but it didn't hold any surprises.

I agree with you. LoveBites became a genre of heavy metal. Which harmoniously combines different genres of metal, classical music, hard rock. LoveBites have their own style. This sets them apart from other Japanese bands.

Those star cymbals are just for show shr spins them in some songs and videos.
They toured Europe and Asia in 2018 and 2019. Lovebites had a successful performance at Wacken Open Air, Germany, 2018, a dream come true for Miho (former bassist and founder of the band). I have the related DVD (Crusaders standing at Wacken) included in a special version of the “Electric Pentagram” CD. They also played at Download, Grasspop and Bloodstock festivals, and also toured the UK in 2019 opening for Dragonforce (they’re good friends, by the way)

They played many festivals, Download Uk, Bloodstock Uk, Wacken, Germany and a couple of others in Europe around the same period! They will be playing in other festivals in Europe this year. Aside from that they will entertain an audience at a festival in the US! My opinion of the US festival is that the lineup is weak, poor by comparison compared to UK and European festivals! You hit the nail on the head about European festivals. It is blatantly obvious, and many of the biggest Japanese rock/metal bands have not played them, which is very suggestive depending on which market they are targeting

Yeah.. The drummer (Haruna) and the bassist (Miho) did play for a band named Destrose.
The star was in the logo, and a part of her kit then. When they formed Lovebites, the star followed her kit, and she gives it a spin now and then.
Sadly Miho left, but was replaced by a Prodigy named Fami, who once was in Davie504s videos.
I believe he also did copy her image for a series of videos.
Talking about the piano: both guitarists started early with piano, but Miyako was considered a concert-level pianist, when she discovered rock and metal, and deicided to learn to play guitar.
Still she uses her skills in some of the songs. Most famous is "Swan song". There is a video on an other channel including a "Chopin" intro (so: "Swan song w/chopin intro").
The singer is Asami, and was picked up at a nightclub where she was doing RnB.
She had little to no experience with metal before joining the band (which is named after a Halestorm song). She also uses some of her experience from doing ballet in here stage presence.
Beside Swan song. She also plays some Rachmaninov piano as intro for another song, Empty Daydream . And she plays some beethoven inside the song in Dystopia Symphony.

Miyako's mother was a big fan of Ritchie Blackmore, and that is the basis for her solo style.
Lovebites won the 2018 Metal Hammer Golden Gods award for best new band. Bloodstock is a music festival in the UK which they also attended in 2018, but it isn't related to the Metal Hammer award. Metal Hammer is a heavy metal magazine. Lovebites won the award before they appeared at Bloodstock.
