Glad to be able to help but Dell locked the undervaluing out on the x15 with one of their BIOS' so if throttlestop is greyed out you may need to roll back the BIOS
Superb video. By far the best one out there on utilizing Throttle Stop on an Alienware M-series. I would also suggest undervolting your GPU with MSI Afterburner. I just spent half the day setting up the undervolts and repeatedly benchmarking, until I got it tuned just right, with a custom thermal profile/fan curve. I'd been utilizing this Alienware M17 R3 for about two years, without doing any of this. Considering Dell has recently replaced all components, including the chassis, I'd best make make the adjustments and get as much life as possible from the unit.

Thank you for the kind words. GPU coming out later and I am doing a conclusion video to tie it all together Thursday. Been really enjoying these machines :)
Ok, I will cover this in my final video tweaking the m15r4 but essentially: Quiet mode locks your cpu at 45w Balanced mode let’s the cpu max out up to 105w (less if you undervolted) Once you apply the undervolt the quiet performance will still stick at 45w but you will get more performance for that 45w than stock. The balanced will run as in my video so hopefully cpu maxed at 4ghz with less watts than stock (mine was 84 I think)
@@MashITTech after you’ve created your throttlestop profiles, do you create a custom fan profile on AWCC and then leave AWCC alone and just alternate between the throttlestop profiles? Or do you still switch profiles in AWCC?
Personally I leave command center alone in balanced and do all my CPU tweaking in throttlestop. As per the video I use different profiles for different things (by reducing the multipliers the temps and watts come right down making this thing so quiet in comparison with stock)
I must have received a decent paste job. With a -.075 undervolt and no reduction of multipliers, the max temperatures I got was 88C using TSBench. With Cinebench R23 I got a multi core score of 10631 with my max temp of 96C in the 10 min run. Stock out of the box the throttling bumped me down to 10216. Thanks for the great tutorial!
@@MashITTech It’s a beautiful laptop. The 15” is a great portable solution for such a powerful device. I opted for the 144Hz screen since I only spec’ed the 3060. But I received a decent chip there too. I was able to overclock it rock solid at +160 Hz on the GPU core. I’m peaking at 9000 Time Spy with great therms in Balanced fan profile. Not bad at all for a 3060 system.
Absolutely wonderful tutorial. My m15 r4 used to repeatedly max out at 100 C when playing dying light 2 for a couple hours. Now it fluctuates between 83 and max 90. Awesome!
I have my m17 R4 i9-10980HK with a -125mV core / -120mV cache. The difference in heat and power is massive. I also use the TCC (in addition to throttlestop) set to 15, this way the temps never go much above 85 degC. By the way, great vids, keep em coming 😀
@@maegnificant im now running at -130mV core / -120mV cache. Have been stable for 3 days now (0 crashes), this includes multiple benchmarks / stress tests including 1 hour cpu stress test. Seems to save approx 15w of power consumption when at full load, never exceeds 90W.
Awesome video was able to under volt my new m17 r4 with 3070 to -132 and overclock my video card almost 200mhz over on core clock I think I might have gotten the lottery 🤷♂️
You should try a -250 core undervolt and a -140 cache undervolt reason being it can dramatically reduce power consumption depending on workload and temps, my XPS 15 7590 with a much thinner chassis can do 40-45 watts under 100% load and stay around 75-85/90 degrees, doing 4.0ghz on all 4 cores.

Great video, I hit the lottery with an old i7 7700HQ. Manages - .170 offset is stable. One thing you did not mention, in a laptop with a colder cpu, the gpu usually also runs colder. Oh, and you can even undervolt the GPU :D
That is amazing! And yes you can undervolt the GPU, but also overclocking it is as good as an undervolt as you still use the 140w budget but with a better voltage frequency curve. dropping an afterburner video shortly to help people that have no clue how to overclock :)

@@MashITTech IS there any way to make throttlestop run automagically on startup? currently I have to manually run the app everytime... Or alternatively is there a way to underclock the cores indefinitely?
was reading a bit on the throttlestop forums, some post from the author of the program. It seems that the cache is the limiting factor so a -70 on cache with a lower value on the core might actually work (like -100 or lower).
Hi @Mash IT. There are 2 questions. 1. So, at 9:10 we can see, that M15 R4 in balanced mode with undervolting -85.0 mV (core & cache) reach maximum 99°C and 87W power. Okay good, and have you tested M17 R4 with the same settings? Really wonder what maximum temperature will hit. I bet for 90°C !! :D 2. As I understood you didn't repaste laptops. How do you think about it ? I've found some posts in Reddit community that recommends additionally for alienware laptops immediately after buying to repaste on some good product like Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut / Kryonaut. They say that native paste is shitty a bit and repasting can help to drop temperatures up to 5°C more.
Hi Nelson, ok so.. 1. It would be very similar even though the m17 has much better cooling. It is because the balanced fan profile doesn't ramp up until it reaches 90c+ to keep the laptop quiet. Don't worry though there are plenty of other profiles or you can use your own
@@MashITTech 1. Hm....I've researched your another "Deep Dive" video and look what I've found ua-cam.com/video/re4ZoYSy4vw/v-deo.html (from 9:27) M17 R4 with undervolting -90.0 mV (core & cache) reach maximum 82°C and 76W power. I believe during this test you were running on "balanced mode" in Alienware Command Center (AWCC). Then it's really big difference (82°C for M17 R4 vs 99°C for M15 R4), or I'm mistaken somewhere?
Hi Nelson, I see you replied about undervolting being locked out in new BIOS but for some reason I can't find the thread so posting here! Did you manage to roll back to 1.2? Please let me know ASAP and I will put an announcement out

But my 12700H score 8000 and have 100 degrees. But the interesting part is when i disable CPU Turbo Boost, The score decrease to 4500 and the temperature is always under 60 degrees 😮 it really worth it for me, lower temperature, lower hardware damage, lower fan noise
i've looked a bunch of the reviews for the new generation of laptops and honestly it leaves much to be desired - this alienware m17 looks like one of the best but it really is a shame it's not that portalable weighing in at 6.5 lbs- the vapor chamber really seems to help. i think the next generation of chips being the tiger lake H or alder lake chips and rtx 3000 series will be when the laptops are able to make the next leap
Do you know how to undervolt x17 r2? Because when i use throttlestop its grayedout so undervokt not possible, i tried to downgrade my bios but not possible either to downgrade bios.
Yes, the 6 cores undervolt better! I had some great undervolts on the old 9 series and 8 series 45w hex cores! Unfortunately the 8 cores don't seem to fair as well, I have only had two so maybe I am unlucky but both were less than -.100 (.085 on one and .09 on the other). I have another m17r4 on the way with cherry mx keyboard so I will test that one too
When you did the undervolt with the different settings for internet, gaming, etc do you still use the alien command center then? Like do you use balanced, or quiet or cool or is that not necessary? Sorry just got my alienware m17 and will be using mostly for 3d modeling and rendering and wondering if I ever need to change it to cool mode since I hve it on balanced...also silly question but do I have to keep msi afterburner and throttlestop running for them to work?..Many thanks
Throttle stop and afterburner don't need to be open to function. They flash to the cpu and GPU control chips at the "firmware" level. Generally these control softwares from alienware, Lenovo, etc. are just adjusting the fan curve. Maybe high performance unlocks a few watts (or takes away with quiet mode) but I doubt it because forcing the system to throttle does the same thing. I would use the fact that with the alienware software closed completely it will save the fan profile-so set it to balanced unless adjusting the lights or whatever and close it down to save the processing power. With a proper undervolt and thus thermals under control you won't need full fans (and if you're like me can't stand the noise) and it would make little difference anyways. Then in quiet mode there won't be enough power used to ramp the fans up. Then you would adjust the profile you would like in the throttle stop taskbar menu as it controls the undervolt multiplier and uses a negligible amount of power to keep open. If anybody knows a way to have an open application control the throttle stop profile please let me know. Happy solid modelling! I get my X17 in a few months! Also if you do manage to save a bad undervolt setting and you can't boot, you will have to clear the cmos by pulling the cmos (button cell probably) battery from the motherboard and that will reset the cpu firmware controller like you would do if you applied a bad overclock with afterburner.
Thank you for the video! However, I am noticing worse base scores on TS Bench than yours. (I'm assuming lower scores are better) Stock, I get a score of 91 and on -75 mV I get 107. What can I do to achieve scores similar to your "Dell Shipped" scores? I have an m15 r4 with an i7-10870H and RTX 3070.
Hi David, forgive my poor english🙈 I brought my m17 r4 because of your great work. And the m17 r4 is such a beauty.🥰 But I do have some questions about undervolting, hope you might enlighten me.🙏🏻 I saw most people saying that we should keep cpu core and cpu cache voltage remain the same. But some people suggest that keep pushing the cpu cache voltage lower and lower till it crash. May I ask what is the difference between these two? And which one you would prefer and why? Anyway, keep up the good work.👍🏻
hello mate, it is a lovely machine, glad you are enjoying it. I discussed this with unclewebb (writer of throttlestop) and he always recommended keeping them the same value and tweaking to get the best shared value. you can usually push the CPU well ahead of the cache but this will then just throttle the cpu. Hope this answers your question
For someone who never undervolted pc/laptop this was confusing. I am not getting the results you are getting at all, its like 2 completely different laptops but they are in fact identical. I don't know if I should go higher or lower than -75.2 because either way nothing changes
I can't enable "Unlock adjustable voltage" in mine. Maybe they blocked this in BIOS. Anything else I can do? I would like to simply decrease the multiplier if I can't undervolt... Because those temps are too high and the clock is unstable...
Great guide but I have a few questions. First in regards to your Cinebench score. I have this laptop with the same specs expect for a 3080. My single core score is 1126 while yours is over 3K. I'm wondering why mine is so much lower? As a reference I'm using Cinebench R23 downloaded from the windows store. Second question is in regards to the undervolt when you downclocked the cpu cores on the gaming profile. You didn't undervolt there as you did in the performance tab. Does the performance tab undervolt apply to all profiles or do I undervolt in the gaming tab as well?
Quick question how does the balance vs high performance on power effect the under volting? Or what does it do in general I’m not to sure just got my first alienware laptop and want it to last awhile

I don’t know if this is true nowadays with TS, but I’ve had to set a group policy within the Windows Group Policy Editor to allow TS to run at bootup in the past.
I am pretty sure it is still the same, I just start mine with a batch file but I think Unused Love is having a different problem where his undervolt doesnt stick upon opening it after a reboot

I'm so glad the video is finally here! It's informative and holds my hand the entire way. I do have some questions though that are making me super anxious now. Because my laptop is so expensive I got a really good warranty, now will undervolting void this? If so then if I use tcc which is built in then will that void it? My other question is that I first see that you have these settings on an m15 so would I use the same settings for the m17? If not then what do you use that'd be absolutely safe and "stable"? I went to reddit and searched if Dell would void the warranty if anything happened with it undervolted BUT others commented saying using throttlestop does not store logs so it'd be impossible for them to find out. I'm just terribly worried that after all this time and all this help you've given me so fast and efficiently that I'd break my laptop, void my warranty, and all within a day of having it. Anyway, please let me know. I loved the video and like I said I absolutely appreciate how fast and informative you are with your replies. Great channel and keep it up!
Using throttlestop will not void your warranty and neither will using TCC which alienware provided. If anything it will likely add longevity to your laptop as it will run cooler. Also the 15 and 17 are essentially the same so yes the same settings, it will just run a bit cooler because of the larger fans 👍 always here to assist if you have any more questions 😃
@@MashITTech I'm glad cause I got 2 years of premium support plus... hate for that to void lol but I will absolutely take your word for it. What settings do you use to get the most out of your own m15/17 while staying as cool as possible?

Still learning. Love that your doing the Alienware laptops because I have one. I subscribed. Got 2 questions. If I offset the voltage on throttlestop, then not save it immediately, and run cinebench and 3dmark. Is the results off cinebench and 3dmark based off the stock pc settings or the throttle stop offset? What am I paying attention to when I undervolt it under throttlestop to know if it’s unstable? Do I just slowly increase till it crashes or so on throttlestop. Of course not saved. Just finding that sweet spot
Thanks mate. Once you have adjusted the voltages make sure the "ok - do not save voltages" is checked and apply, you will now see your offsets at the top right so you can see they are active. Now run throttlestop. If you are not sure if it is working just look at the watts it is using during cinenbench. Stock mine uses 105w after undervolt it uses 85w! When you run the benchmark included in throttlestop, if it crashes or you get errors then the undervolt is too much. Also make sure you run time spy or similar GPU benchmark and also put the machine to sleep and wake it, if any of this causes a crash you have gone too far and need to back off. Hope this helps but ask away if there is anything unclear 👍
Awesome video! I don’t know much about computers but I just bought a laptop cooling pad that has fans to blow colder air into the intake from underneath. Would you consider this useful at all?
I haven't tested any on the m15/m17 but I always prop my laptops up to give better airflow as they are always too close to the desk by default (companies trying to get the thinnest laptop!) therefore I am sure this will be better than putting it flat on a table 👍

6 cores is still the sweet spot for CPU IMHO and a 1660ti will be fine for a good couple of years at 1080p, you may just need to reduce some settings on AAA games to run well
When you change clock speeds on all four "settings" you also need to change the undervolts on all four too.
Thanks!
Thank you so much for making this video i've been dealing with m17 r4 being at 100c gaming for 3 years. i wish i saw this sooner.

@@MashITTech A quick question mate, what difference will switching between the Quiet and Balanced profiles on the undervolted CPU?
Ok, I will cover this in my final video tweaking the m15r4 but essentially:
Quiet mode locks your cpu at 45w
Balanced mode let’s the cpu max out up to 105w (less if you undervolted)
Once you apply the undervolt the quiet performance will still stick at 45w but you will get more performance for that 45w than stock.

I tried undervolting, but the TS Bench took a lot more time, and after I adjusted the FIVR, it got an even bigger number
Hm....I've researched your another "Deep Dive" video and look what I've found ua-cam.com/video/re4ZoYSy4vw/v-deo.html (from 9:27)
M17 R4 with undervolting -90.0 mV (core & cache) reach maximum 82°C and 76W power. I believe during this test you were running on "balanced mode" in Alienware Command Center (AWCC).
Then it's really big difference (82°C for M17 R4 vs 99°C for M15 R4), or I'm mistaken somewhere?
Hmm you could well be right, I have been running so many benchmarks I am confusing myself 😂 I will go back over my tests

Awesome info thank you
The R3 could be heavily undervolted on the 10750h, no hiccups with -.115 cache, -.165 core. I wonder how high(or low) the r4 with the 8 core can go
Yes, the 6 cores undervolt better! I had some great undervolts on the old 9 series and 8 series 45w hex cores! Unfortunately the 8 cores don't seem to fair as well, I have only had two so maybe I am unlucky but both were less than -.100 (.085 on one and .09 on the other). I have another m17r4 on the way with cherry mx keyboard so I will test that one too
@@MashITTech what's you ETA for delivery on that one? If you don't mind me asking
Yes u need throttle stop to run
Thank you for the video! However, I am noticing worse base scores on TS Bench than yours. (I'm assuming lower scores are better) Stock, I get a score of 91 and on -75 mV I get 107. What can I do to achieve scores similar to your "Dell Shipped" scores? I have an m15 r4 with an i7-10870H and RTX 3070.
I have the same issue did you solve it
Hi David, forgive my poor english🙈
I brought my m17 r4 because of your great work.
And the m17 r4 is such a beauty.🥰
But I do have some questions about undervolting, hope you might enlighten me.🙏🏻
I saw most people saying that we should keep cpu core and cpu cache voltage remain the same.
Thanks, it helps a lot.
Needed to include how to get ThrottleStop to automatically launch when you start up your PC (i.e via TaskScheduler)
Haha you are my biggest critic :) Yes, maybe I should have added that
I think this will work well with many Dell laptops as well.
It sure will, I had a lot of people ask so I aimed it directly at m15/m17 but it will work with any unlocked CPU :)
@@MashITTech I heard that they've disabled undervolting in latest update

same here as soon as i change the voltage and hit apply it freezes and need to restart, from what i read you cant undervolt i710750h is that true?
You should do an update for the x17. The device already runs rather cool but undervolting would contribute to it's longevity.
Yep, this is in the works, just had a lot to get through 😃👍
Manage to do -100 MV and - 80 on cache. In AAA games its goes up to 90c and no throttle on max settings.
Nicely done! That sounds like a good balance
Quick question how does the balance vs high performance on power effect the under volting? Or what does it do in general I’m not to sure just got my first alienware laptop and want it to last awhile

Thanks you so much for this! Would love to see how to undervolt my GPU and change my fan profiles. I am running a MSI GE66 Raider with a RTX 3070. I have found the MSI dragon center to be very buggy, so I'd like to avoid using it.
Well you can use my msi afterburner guide on your 3070. Also download throttlestop and see if msi allow undervolting (assuming the ge66 uses intel 10870h?) If they do you can also use my guide on that too
Same CPU on M17 but has vapor chamber and better cooling, so better temps in general. Am I wrong? How far did you push the M17 R4 with TStop and what temps did you get? (yep, I'm oriented to the 17" model ;-))
Hi sorry, struggling to remember as I wasn’t as concerned because the temps were so much better but from memory it was just over 10c better on load. The 15” also has a vapour chamber btw but much smaller fans 👍
Thankdls for the video I don't suppose you can help? I have the M17 R1 with 4k and RTX 3080 but my touch pad no longer has RGB on it, I had to reset the entire laptop and install new version of windows on it but since the my rgb touch pad hasn't worked
After making adjustments do you run the bench mark test on all i.e. Performance Game Internet and Battery. I have gone down to 70 and when running the second test on cinabench it keeps crashing. And system gets really hot. Should I wait till system cool before starting every test? I have seen some state they don’t equally change the gpu/cpu. What order could they be changed in. I need help sorry new to this
I’m very curious how the 144hz panel with advanced optimus and g-sync performs (color accuracy, brightness, etc) as well as battery life and stress on the GPU
Can't wait for the one on the way with the cherry mechanical keyboard, that is one I cant wait for :)
at 15:00 how i can get those temps and Hz on top of Time Spy? Great video.
Thanks mate. That is explained in the next video in the series: ua-cam.com/video/TOicQR5g7zU/v-deo.html
it is using msi afterburner 👍
@@MashITTech thanks a lot!
Definitely be interesting to see what you can do with a results comparison between TS vrs Awcc+TCC. And or full rundown of Awcc custom settings. Atm. iam struggling with custom profiles saving per game/launcher. Crawling off a roof & heading straight for a cold beer Might be hampering my computer skills just a bit :)
Haha I love it, think I might join you. But in seriousness the next tweaking video will be focusing on the end results and command centre profiles/custom profiles 👍
If i had set TCC at 15 before , do i have to put it back to 0 before undervolting using this method? Thanks for the help
Nope, you can happily use both. You may want to find the best combination of them both for you. (I will be doing a further video where I put all the tweaks together to get the best from the system (it was just too long for 1 video)
@@MashITTech looking forward to it. I will probably use throttlestop and set a tcc of 10. I think Aorus/Gigabyte have a thermal limit of 90 degrees so I may copy that.
Yeah, I am more comfortable with 90c. 100c does seem hot buy macs have been running at that for years without problems, other than being a mac :p
Nice! I have a m15 and it hit -110 and was stable, scored 4100 in cinebench, but I'm having trouble getting throttlestop to remember my voltages after the system restarts, I have it on save voltages immediately
Let me check mine when I get in the office shortly and let you know because mine stick
@@MashITTech got it to work, not really sure what I did though, but it's sticking now. Another weird problem I'm having is in shadow of the tomb raider benchmark, I get really good fps until the last scene of the last benchmark, where I dip down to like 80, which makes my average fps about 107. Isn't my average fps supposed to be around 125?
I’ve managed -100 so far and stable. Do they need to remain the same or can the voltage be undervolted more than the other?
What’s it mean when throttle stop hits power
I have a x17 and got a stable under volt and reliable temp from 80-85 c while long game sessions
Only error I keep hitting in throttle stop is power
@@MashITTech do let me know if you can. I do realize that might be a lengthy reply but I do appreciate it. When I get my m17 I'm just going to copy and paste!
Will do mate. give me a few minutes and I will detail exactly what I would do. Also the last part of my tweaking videos will cover this as I plan to cover command centre profiles and put all the tweaks together to show the system running at its best
@@MashITTech yes! So excited!!!! Thanks so much.
Awesome content. I wonder if it works on the new x15 r2’s 12th gen cpu? With performance cores and all that good stuff.
no sorry it doesn't. The 12th gen is completely locked down :(
@@MashITTech ah that’s so unfortunate. But are you still able to set multipliers to tune it down when doing mundane jobs? If not, is the best option to just set the fan to silent mode? An tutorial on an alternative solution would be much appreciated! Thanks again for your wonderful contents, I’ve bought mine after watching your x15 r2 reviews :)
We would also like to see is there any use of Graphic Amplifier port. Thank you
That's a good idea! I will see if I can pick one up
The AGA is end of life. It doesn’t even support 30 Series graphics.
Somebody else mentioned that they are in the process of making an rev3 amplifier. I havent heard anything from Alienware yet though
wow. amazing videos .
Does these undervolts apply to the razor blade 3080? the specs r pretty much same ..
I am not 100% sure as I don't have the 2021 model yet but Razer locked out the undervolts on the 2020 models :(
Still learning.
