I decided to share some of the many things I learned from backpacking and living in Australia on my own the past year or so. It was definitely an eye opening experience unlike any other. Hopefully what I share might interesting to some, especially for anyone that is considering travelling Australia for themselves!

Great video. Your insight and deciding to share this experience taught me a lot. As others have pointed out, you definitely have picked up our slang. There are so many differences between Aus and Asian countries, however i think it's videos such as these that can help one another understand those differences. Great job. Note: I think you are looking for an older group of friends to hang out with .

Food is expensive because we have two grocery chains that have formed a duopoly. So the farmers and suppliers get squeezed, the customers get overcharged and they rake in th profits. It is devastating farmers but these guys don't care.

I'm an Aussie and our expensive groceries and vegies and housing shocks me too. The last couple of years suddenly Australia has become an expensive place to live 😮

The flies are mainly harmless bush flies that fly into your face to get moisture. Not everyone loves the party scene, there are many people who do not drink or get drunk. Many just live their lives. You have to find your own space and it is a big country so there is plenty of space around. There are plenty of galleries, museums and functions to appreciate without getting sloshed. There are even people who feel sad that you thought you had to conform to the backpacker mentality but you were real and that is what counts. There are million who are lonely.

About the 'people not talking to you', I would say, because they're not sure of our English level. Plus, a lot of Chinese people, especially the current lot coming over, are not as interested in conversing with strangers. So people are hesitant.
You sound Australian. I think you’d fit right in if you moved here. But I see you’ve gone to Germany. Food is expensive in Australia because we’ve got an oligopoly amongst a food retailers. There are 3 big ones. There’s no competition and the government is too fearful to break them up to create real competition.

G'day. I work with quite a few backpackers from Europe, Asia and Southern America. I would suggest buying a van, (preferably a 4x4one), and then travel around Australia. The extra cost for the vehicle you will save on accommodation.
, and then some. You will also be able to do things immediately, like move to jobs and earn extra money. Australia is a very big country. 5th Biggest. We have a small population. Our roads are great around the cities, but deteriate outside the cities and are almost non-existant the further away you get. Personally I love being as far away as possible. I shit you not.

I totally understand the drinking and partying thing. I was never a drinker, much, so didn't like to go out at night very much. Plus, drinking out, is expensive. Waste of money. I'd rather do other things. These days it's easier since there more people who like to do non-drinking things.

Yeah Backpackers are probably not the best place to make friends if you don't drink, as an Aussie who doesn't drink I rarely got to bars and never backpackers.
I moved from Sydney to Singapore and found Singapore cheaper to live, alter when I came back to Australia I moved to Brisbane and found Brisbane was cheaper than Singapore. Cars are much cheaper in AU and no COE, food is more expensive in AU, but electricity and water is cheaper, I hear alcohol is more expensive in Singapore but cigarettes are cheaper in Singapore, I don't smoke or drink so can only go on what others told me. so as you see when you look at your monthly expenses overall, I found Singapore is about 10% cheaper than Sydney and about 10% more expensive than Brisbane. The other big difference is in Singapore I never had a car (didn't need one) In Sydney I had a car but didn't need it, in Brisbane it's more of a necessity, the other side of that is on weekends when you want to go somewhere away from population it's hard in Singapore because cars are so expensive even to just hire one for a couple of days. i still miss some things about Singapore, It's a great country, just a different lifestyle to Australia. I also found Singapore's work culture more laid back than Sydney but Brisbane is more laid back than Singapore.

I visited Singapore last year, some people looked at you from head to toe. In Australia that never happens to me.

This is very common. Singaporeans have a massive chip on their shoulders (not all). Probably the least friendly of all Asian countries. I’ve been married to a Singaporean for the past 17 years and she would say exactly the same thing
I found this video interesting. I'm sad that you had trouble finding people with which to do social activities other than drinking and partying. I agree that sometimes people assume that Asians, women in particular, are withdrawn and insular. Perhaps that's why people didn't invite you to hang out with them at the beach or the park. It's very unfortunate. I think you would be cool to hang out with.
Approx one in FIVE people in Australia are from an Asian background so that is NOT a rare species , actually it is almost a common species with those numbers.
It depends on the area. Asians can be rather rare outside the cities. I shit you not.

If you're into reading the local library my suit you and probably find book-clubs you could join where you may meet likeminded people to yourself. Have noticed that free public libraries are not that common to many other countries which us aussies take for normal.

Aussies in general, although mostly gregarious, tend to be respectful of people's desire to be private or alone. They will not 'push' themselves onto others. If you give off a 'quiet' vibe they'll leave you alone assuming that's what you want. If you are a quiet person you need to take the initiative with aussies if you want to make friends.
The work/life balance is the reason why things are more expensive and things take longer.
Farmers markets or markets in general, way cheaper than supermarkets and wotnot!

Nice video, the reason why everything is so expensive is because of greed. Normal income earners are paying for too many overpaid parasites including banks, politicians, Coles, Woolworths etc. Coles and Woolworths pay their farmers a pittance and they make their huge profits...

Fresh food has to be transported longer distances from growers to sellers in cities in Australia.
Also high wages at each stage of production, transport, storage and retail are added to the price of each item.

As a non-white citizen, yeah, nah. Sure there plenty of good people that think that way, but they have an underlying racism that they really don’t like being questioned. They think not being loudly racist is enough and they’ll angrily refute any suggestion that they do better when caught saying or doing something racist.
I have the opposite experience. I live in a chinese majority suburb and usually when I get into the lift to go up to the shopping centre I am the only European looking person. Likewise in the bus I am in the minority of Europeans in the bus.
I don’t agree with some of the stuff you said especially about the insects. You have to name the areas you went to because depending where you travel you may have a very different experience.

Just on the price of fresh produce in supermarkets: despite the vast land and large scale agriculture, farmers here struggle, on the verge of being exploited. Overseas supermarket chains such as Woolworths monopolise and require a minimum size for apples, as one example. Batches of apples that don't meet that minimum size are thrown away to rot.

Working out what you like or don’t like doing is part of growing up and getting to know yourself, accepting that and being comfortable with it takes time.
I can understand that it may have been more apparent how limiting it can be in Australia if you don’t like pubs or nightclubs as it’s a very alcohol driven social scene.
Yep, bush flies (the small ones that fly into your eyes and nostrils) are a really annoying part of the Australian experience.
16:00 Yeah, mozzies here barely bite me but every time I head back to Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore I get bit al lthe time. My ex is the opposite and she loved seeing how much the mozzies bothered me over there as they close to left me alone over here.
I wonder if what you saw were not mozzies but another type of insect such as mayflies. Every time I go to Indonesia the mozzies always swarm around me instead of the locals. They probably think they are dining out on foreign food. 😂

Our groceries are very cheap - plenty of food markets all around and supermarkets like Aldi, Woolworths and Coles. 'Farm to Fork is a well known expression to keep encouraging growers, sellers and buyers to come together to support the local industry.
I think you're living in lala land my friend. Go travel and take a look at how cheap everywhere is is compared to Australia. The sad thing is that farmers don't actually make much money, it's Coles and Woolies who make record profits.

Apart from real estate I have never found Australia to be excessively expensive.
If you shower regularly and use makeup, Sunblock, deodorant and perfumes or aftershave, you will cut down bothersome insects. They are drawn too the smell of you, especially Mozzies. Sweaty or previously worn clothes... is a perfect place for Flies to hang out..

Many overseas students make the mistake of seeking rental accommodation in a city like Melbourne when it is significantly cheaper to do so in nearby cities. One example is Warragul which is one hour train ride away which is a very pleasant small city/large town with great amenities. It pays to look ‘outside the box’ and tolerate small inconveniences to avoid unnecessary financial pressures
Alternatively successive governments could have alleviated the pressure driving up housing costs. Heck, Singapore has a far, far greater need for housing and they’ve worked to allow most people to be able to have one.
Homelessness is a political choice, and Australian politicians for the past two decades have chosen to allow housing to be increasingly out of reach.

The simple reason for produce being expensive in Australia is, if it wasn't, farmers would just export it to places like Singapore where it was expensive. Australian distributors are both competing with international distributors, and maximising profit.

you need to join clubs and meet ups for common interests. It is as hard as finding accommodation with regular travel. And it is always assumed everyone has a car for meetups. Public transport takes twice as long so take audio books if going regularly. If you don't have a car you will definitely be alone. People without cars don't even meet their families.
