Makes me cringe to remember that many of these executions were botched and the victim often suffered unnecessarily. This was due to the fact that more often than not, the executioner just didn't know what he was doing.
Steve - incorrect on the guillotine I'm afraid! Dr Guillotine invented nothing, he was simply tasked by the authorities to 'find' an efficient method of execution for large volumes of condemned prisoners, and he came across and recommended the machine that came to bear his name. However, numerous guillotine type machines existed prior to this, with the most likely origin being found in England and known as the Halifax Gibbet predating the guillotine by at least 250 years, possibly longer but records are incomplete prior to that!

Just look at the proceeding generation of the York Princes during Richard the III’s coup, the Earl of Warwick during Henry the VII’s reign, and the Countess of Salisbury in Henry the VIII’s. Shawn Darling and what are they? Mary killed her because she wanted to be Queen, nobody deserves to die. Especially if jealousy! But I don't know u and u can have your own opinion
The thing was that it was completely AGAINST HER WILL!!!! Her husband and her father-in-law plus her OWN relatives all PUSHED her into it. When Mary Tudor took over as Queen Mary I of England (if Will & Ariel Durant are telling the truth), Lady Jane Grey innocently asked if she could go home - instead, she was imprisoned in the Tower. I think this was wrong indeed by ANY measure of justice.
What I'm contesting is: how much of treason is it when Lady Jane Grey was pushed into it *_against her will_* ?? In other words, it's a different matter from being virtually FORCED into something compared to what Anne Boleyn pushed Henry Tudor the Younger (King Henry VIII) into doing, which was entirely a voluntary thing. I.e., had Grey immediately accepted the throne or - worse yet - sought it when John Dudley the Duke of Northumberland pushed King Edward VI into disinheriting Mary Tudor, THEN it would have been an entirely different matter and THEN there would be no question as to definite guilt. However, Grey RESISTED with ALL her might whilst Edward VI was alive - it was not until three days after his death that she "reluctantly acknowledged herself queen" (1553/07/09), while the first news of Mary Tudor claiming the throne reached London on July 10, one day later.
How on earth can you dismiss so cold-bloodedly and emphatically that Jane was *PUSHED INTO IT????* *_NO fair-minded court nowadays would fail to take such a thing into consideration as extenuating circumstances!!!!_* Furthermore, what about those who Mary Tudor (Mary I) DID have BURNED ALIVE like Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer??? I'm neither condoning nor condemning what she did: the fact remains that she DID order their deaths by burning at the stake!!! This most certainly gives the *_lie_* to your statement that "Mary I never hurt anyone."
@Helen D @Helen D To suggest that a young girl deserved to DIE just because she knew she wasn't the rightful queen (even though her parents told her it was God's plan for her, being as religious as she was this was the only reason she excepted) is sickening and outright cruel. If you're so fond of a time when they killed children for something their parents manipulated them into then why don't we deal with you the same way you would have been dealt with for speaking out against the queen. Just ask Mr. Gilbert Pot, oh wait he can't hear you cause they cut his ears off. I wish they'd do the same to me so I wouldn't have to listen to your bloodthirsty remarks.

Since the Anglican Church was founded by a brutal King Henry VIII whose motive to change the faith was to divorce or butcher his wives the English Church should redeem itself and revert to Roman Catholicism. In fact at one time even King Henry himself defended the Roman Catholic church against Martin Luther and was bestowed the title of Defender of the Faith by the Pope only to rebel against the Pope on grounds of the latter refusing to annull his first marriage and form his own church.
@@drsavio79 Edward V1 was England's first Protestant King why on earth would we want to revert to Catholicism even today the majority of Catholics are Protestant from the waist down.
All because the Duke of Northumberland wished to keep Edward VI's half-sister Mary off the throne. Jane's mother renounced her claim to the throne in Jane's favor. Jane married the Duke's younger son, Guildford.
Knowing that she’s just a pawn, I will never execute her. She did nothing wrong. I think this is cruel and very cowardly. Face the real culprits for heaven’s sake and leave the innocents out of it.
The sad thing is, Mary didn't want to do this. Reports suggest she planned to keep Jane locked up and quietly release her once her own reign was secure. Mary wasn't stupid after all, she knew that none of this was Jane's idea. The problem was then Jane's parents got involved in a rebellion and Mary's allies insisted that actions needed to be taken (the Holy Roman Emperor would not permit Mary to marry his son, a critical alliance for her, while Jane still lived). Mary offered to spare Jane if she converted, but Jane would not and thus Mary had to do this to keep her European Allies on side. Which may be why, unusually for executions of this type, Mary made it private so that Jane would be spared a braying crowd in her final moment. Which only further enforces that Jane was stuck between political forces that just moved her around like a chess piece.

As a boy I often played amongst the ruins of her house in Bradgate park, Leicestershire. It fascinated me then, as it does now. I still live close by and walk through the park regularly. I always stop at the ruins and think of her. It’s a beautiful but haunting place.
Regardless of whether she was killed using an axe or sword, it is sad that she ruled for less than two weeks. She was known as a learned woman. Who knows what good she could have done on the throne had she been given a chance.
It is hard to say. Like King Edward VI, who also died young, Jane was an evangelical Protestant who bitterly detested both Catholics AND Anglicans. There is no doubt that Edward would have been as murderous as his father had he lived to adulthood, and from the quotes attributed to Jane, it is very possible that she would have been just as bloodthirsty.
Lady Jane Grey was beheaded with an axe. Anne Boleyn was, as far as I know, the only person, or at least prominent person, executed with a sword in Britain.
I did read from a reliable source that what you just saw on the video did actually happen ,Lady jane did fumble and asked "where is it " and the man had to help her ,it is in the history books
It is interesting to speculate what would have happened to Britain had Princess Elizabeth been beheaded following the execution of Lady Jane Grey, who was a helpless pawn in the hands of others, notably the Duke of Northumberland. Had Queen Mary heeded the advice of some around her, Elizabeth would have been sent to the block like Jane and the country might have been a totally different place. Elizabeth may have been very lucky that she did not lose her head on the block, like Jane.

they way I understand it most executioners at the time used swords, which were carefully concealed from the victim. The sword was drawn from its concealment and swung in one quick motion by skilled executioners (though in the case of Thomas Cromwell, the executioner was falling down drunk, whacked away a half dozen times without mortal result until one of the jailers had to push him away, grasp the sword and finish the task)
Anne’s highly skilled executioner hired from France picked up his razor-sharp sword from where it was hidden, said “HAND ME MY SWORD.” and neatly whacked her before she braced herself expecting it.

This is so wrong. An innocent victim of a political game.
Its not about the pain after the head is gone, Its about inflicting the fear and pain before the head is taken off. Its the fear of waiting to meet a gruesome death, is what the actual punishment.
She was really brave, I would have been yelling at the top of my lungs!! and telling on everyone who made me become queen without wanting to.
Such a brave young girl.
+FlowerChild65 And an Anglican martyr - she refused to convert to Catholicism.
In reality she probably screemd like a baby. She was beheaded in a room of tower bridge. Not in the open.
@@apefromthekitchen well wouldnt you if you were about to die?
How horrific, murdering a child who was forced to marry a stranger, and then forced to become the Queen of England, only to be executed after serving as queen for only 9 days.
At least she loved her young husband.
@@annmitchell4663well actually in real life they hated each other, she even refused to see him for the last time before she got executed….
Thanks for clearing that up, andi. There was no love lost between Jane and her husband. She was an intellectual and he was a drunk. You do the math. The movie was good though. Mostly fiction.
They did love each other, though.
Queen Jane is one of my favorite historical figures. May she rest in peace.
Makes me cringe to remember that many of these executions were botched and the victim often suffered unnecessarily. This was due to the fact that more often than not, the executioner just didn't know what he was doing.
That's why the French doctor invented the guillotine later on.
I'd rather have my head chopped off from the 10th time then be burned or boiled alive.

The very people who were supposed to protect her used her as a commodity. I studied English medieval monarchy, as harsh as it was nothing compares to this complete injustice

its sad that a young girl like Jane was executed
she didn't want to be Queen and knew the crown didn't belong to her it belonged to her cousin Mary the 1st. the right line of succession was Edward, Mary then Elizabeth,
Lily Blackwell King Henry VIII didn't think so and neither did a lot of people. Good thing Elizabeth was Queen after Mary.

I'm sure you can find examples of the Plantagenets and Stuarts doing the same sort of thing, and perhaps the Hanovers as well.,
@@johnberger2851 well, certainly the Plantagenats !! Bloodthirsty lot !
Actually, Mary the I didn't want to execute Lady Jane Grey. She had planned to pardon Jane and her husband, and release them from the Tower when it was safe to do so, perhaps after the delivery of an heir. Unfortunately, she capitulated to ensure her marriage with Philip the II went ahead.
Targaryen Dynasty, Oh, without a question. Sadly, that’s objectively true. Just look at the proceeding generation of the York Princes during Richard the III’s coup, the Earl of Warwick during Henry the VII’s reign, and the Countess of Salisbury in Henry the VIII’s. Absolute monarchy was a bloodbath. Thankfully we have a different system of governance now!
No different to any others at that time and some now
i was totally smitten by HBC when i first saw this film, and have been ever since -- uniquely beautiful and a brilliant actress even at this young age. she wasn't more than 20 when this was shot (oddly, she looks younger than in A Room with a View, released a year earlier). the scene still brings a few tears to the eyes.
I'm just wondering how have any of these actors had a panic attack having to play this scene? Or other execution scenes?
Exactly
Maybe because these are professionals who are acting and no one is actually getting killed.
@kutter_ttl6786 yeah I understand now 😭. I was a kid when I posted this comment
It is sad Katherine was only a teenager like Jane , Katherine was a very naive and flirtacious girl though but I gotta feel sorry for her as well as Jane , Jane was pawn used by her ambitious selfish family
Lady Jane has to be the most tragic figure in history she was only 16 or 17 when she died
She didn't even want to be queen, how sad! Makes me sick 😔
She got what she deserved.
Shawn Darling how come? Because Edward VI wanted her to, so basically she had no choice! And that Mary was jealous so she basically killed her?!
XX_Heyitseve_XX maybe she did some things that also called for her beheading.
Shawn Darling and what are they? Mary killed her because she wanted to be Queen, nobody deserves to die. Especially if jealousy! But I don't know u and u can have your own opinion
XX_Heyitseve_XX That is the reason all she needed let's leave it at that Game of Thrones just for real.
She didn't do anything wrong
@Helen D stfu
How on earth can you dismiss so cold-bloodedly and emphatically that Jane was *PUSHED INTO IT????*
*_NO fair-minded court nowadays would fail to take such a thing into consideration as extenuating circumstances!!!!_*
Furthermore, what about those who Mary Tudor (Mary I) DID have BURNED ALIVE like Latimer, Ridley and Cranmer??? I'm neither condoning nor condemning what she did: the fact remains that she DID order their deaths by burning at the stake!!! This most certainly gives the *_lie_* to your statement that "Mary I never hurt anyone."
@Helen D @Helen D To suggest that a young girl deserved to DIE just because she knew she wasn't the rightful queen (even though her parents told her it was God's plan for her, being as religious as she was this was the only reason she excepted) is sickening and outright cruel. What if this happened today, would she still get a death sentence or just be removed from power. What if this was your daughter huh. Would you still think she deserved to die!
Lady Jane. She was such a brave girl. Terribly sad story.
Wow... I was 6 in 1986. I didn't know Helena was that much older than me. She's still so beautiful that I really thought she was younger than that. She's still so stunning im jealous!😍😍😍
THe most devil man in the history Henry VIII and Mary a poor victim...
Barbara Wilder Henry viii was already dead when lady Jane grey was executed
Cameron Richardson I agree yep
This was the doing of Mary Tudor.
Being in the Tower of London will truly give you the creeps --- to know the things that happened there...
All because the Duke of Northumberland wished to keep Edward VI's half-sister Mary off the throne. Jane's mother renounced her claim to the throne in Jane's favor. Jane married the Duke's younger son, Guildford.
It is likely that Mary's persecutions would never have transpired had it not been for the Dudley/Grey rebellions.
@@nassauguy48 Mary was a strong Catholic. She would likely have moved against the Protestants even if Northumberland had not meddled.
the executioner looks so weird and scary, especially his mask, it reminds me of the villain superman in the comic book

The queen for 9 Days
That must have been a hell of a week!
@zacthecatty35 yeah!
However, she is normally not listed in any of the official lists of English monarchs.
Which only further enforces that Jane was stuck between political forces that just moved her around like a chess piece.
indeed, lady jane is by far one of the most tragic figures in great britain history....only a pawn in her mother's monstruous clutches!!she was just an innocent girl but through all her tragic short life she showed courage and kept true to her opinions, even in her death...for that she should always be remembered...RIP lady jane ...
She was my daughter’s age 😥 poor innocent lamb
Helena looked so pretty...she still does.
I feel so sorry for Lady Jane. She’s was badly abused by her parents, forced to marry a man she didn’t love, forced into the role of Queen ship so her husband would be able to rule (although his father would’ve held the reins of power), was overthrown by the rightful queen and then condemned to die (after being spared) because of her own father’s stupid decisions. And she was just a teen when this happened.
Guildford was also forced into the marriage. He was a pawn like Jane. But if there’s any consolation Jane and Guildford did fall in love.
@@Mia-dt3gl I know he fell in love with her (it's said he carved her name on his cell wall and he did ask to see her before his execution).
But given that she refused to see him, I don't think she did love him as much as he loved her. Did she have affection for him? Most likely. But love? Highly unlikely.
@@janeyrevanescence12 Jane refused to see Guildford because she felt it would be harder for them to face their executions if they saw each other. She would rather see him “after” (as in, when they were both dead). But she also screamed and cried for him when she saw his body after they brought him back.
My god she was only a child. Medieval times were really cruel!
Poor, poor girl! (and her husband!). Caught up in the schemes of the rich and mighty and used as pawns in the political and religious game of POWER (aren´t we all?). This game has been going on worldwide, in every culture and country, one way or another, for aeons and will only end when humanity and the world we live in changes and ascends to a higher realm of consciousness - one of true empathy and eternal love for all.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Well said.
Plus ca change . . .
Or when human beings cease to exist..
so sad... she was good person... good queen... and today is same.. :-(
What a superb actress..wow... thanks for sharing...
Even from a Young age, Helena Bonham Carter had Talent.
@@nassauguy48 Thank you!
Lady Jane Grey was beheaded with an axe. Anne Boleyn was, as far as I know, the only person, or at least prominent person, executed with a sword in Britain.
Sir Michael Hordern was a brilliant actor - and a wonderful Gandalf.
So Helena Bonham Carter played Anne Boleyn AND Jane Grey?? WOW

I believe I found out I was in some way related to Lady Jane... So I kind of feel sad watching this. But they did a great job with this movie! C:
The men who brought her to this end didn't have half an ounce of her courage
You could tell the executioner didn't want to do that
Helena has been a Tudor twice: Lady Jane and Anne Boleyn
She was so nervous, she didnt even know what she was doing! She was so young!!! Bless her heart ❤
From playing someone who lost her head to someone shouting "off with their heads!", Helena had truly played it all
There is nothing more gut-wrenching than when someone stone innocent gets hurt or killed
Released by Paramount Home Video in 1986, although the movie was released in 1985.
Elizabeth may have been very lucky that she did not lose her head on the block, like Jane.

this part keeps playing on my mind when I watched this movie...it's so dramatic...
Is this a movie? Can someone enlighten me? Thank you in advance!
they way I understand it most executioners at the time used swords, which were carefully concealed from the victim.
I hate all those comments dissin on HBC.
She's one of the greatest actresses in my opinion and I certaintly don't think her acting went downhill. If anything it's gotten better. (:
She can portray absolutly any character. Whether it be someone like Lady Jane to the Red Queen. Anne Boleyn to Ms. Lovett. Elizabeth (from Frankenstein) to Marla Singer (from Fight Club(

What gets me is that the Clergy were present at most executions, but never spoke out against them. Seeing as one of the Ten Commandments is thou shalt not kill. Bloody hypocrites!
The Commandment is NOT "thou shalt not kill". That was the fault of some dumbass translator, who may have had his own agenda. The ACTUAL commandment is "thou shalt not MURDER"!
