If I buy only one device for pdf reader and note taking, which one is the best? AIR 3 C? Tab Ultra C Pro? A6X2? or Remarkable2? (without argue about budget)
Hi Kit. My priorities: (1) reduce eye strain, (2) markup academic pdfs, (3) take notes, (4) write articles, (5) Outlook calendar & email (6) fewer distractions - the 13.3 Ultra X is tempting but I like the keyboard on the Ultra C Pro. However, I also wonder if a 300dpi device would be easier on the eyes. Thoughts?
I think it sounds like the Tab X might suit you. Although honestly wasn't it Tab X, note air 3C or Tab ultra C Pro would fulfill all of these needs. Ask yourself whether portability is a key factor, if so, go one of the smaller ones. And if you see yourself using a lot of split screen and reading many full size pdfs. If so go for tab x. If the keyboard case is a must have, then go for this!
Have they improved the durability at all vs the original? There are a lot of reports on Reddit about Tab Ultra C screens randomly failing and getting distorted after charging overnight. Likely the battery swelling, according to engineers.
Purchased the Tab Ultra Pro based on this recommendation. Extremely disappointed. Handwriting to text is terrible. Doesn't even have the "double tap" option that they show in their own manual. Converted text shows on top of the Handwriting. If use the reflow option it removes the Handwriting but you can't save the contents. Emailed them with no answer. Return policy is worse. They take out 25% for restocking and you pay for shipping and taxes! Buyer beware!!
I had a similar experience with the Tab Ultra. I wanted to love it but it was a pain in the arse to use. As mentioned by you, text to type is horrible, to the point of being completely unusable. They really need to sort out their software, rather than bringing out new devices all the time.
Thanks for all your videos and comparisons. I have been looking for a good e-ink tablet for the tasks of reading ebooks and writing/note-taking for university classes, for replacing physical books and notepads. Your channel and videos have been an absolute goldmine for the tablet choice reviews and comparisons and I really appreciate and thank you for all of the effort that you have put in your reviews and comparisons. I hope you have a good holiday season and Merry Christmas/Happy New Years.
Hi. I purchased the tab ultra c pro after watching your reviews, which are wonderful might i add. However, I think i have a faulty unit. The left side of the screen seems to get darker after about 20 seconds of use. The issue resolves itself when the screen refreshes but then returns. Is this normal? Thanks
Question about limitations regarding the size and complexity of the pdf document. For example, is it possible to open a pdf document of an architectural plan of the house, paper size A2 or larger? Is it possible to zoom and write notes on such a document?
The Tab Ultra C Pro needs a power-bank case, without the keyboard. For taking notes at school, give me the option of two cases: one with keyboard & mouse, the second (3rd party?) with a battery that'd give the reader double the life.
I was MacUser magazine's Technical Editor for many years, until it closed in 2015. Yes, the hype surrounding new product releases is crazy, almost regardless of what product or manufacturer it's from!
Good Point. I wonder how long kit's hint at the 13.3 inch sized device will take to come out as that would be an even better keyboard. Since people can buy the current one with both a usual case and also a keyboard case, that means one can choose daily which to use if weight is a problem. So as the features of the Ratta Supernote are so good and they claim to be coming out with the A4X2 by end of 2024 that makes me ask whether anyone thinks Onyx Boox will come out with a replaceable battery Pro version that is A4 sized by end of year 2024 as well? Then I would say they should put in a larger battery size as well as having the battery replaceable.
PS: I like how in your videos you mention to sit back and share it to the TV. I was sitting in my hammock in front of the TV watching this on my tiny phone screen, and went "huh, yeah, I should do that".
Roughly six months since I got this. Great tablet. The keyboard is absolute dog shit and has collected dust since I got it. If you're thinking of buying one with the keyboard in mind, you might want to reconsider.
Thanks for all the content and advice on all things e-ink! I own the Remarkable 2 with keyboard case, Boot Tab Ultra, Boox Tab C Mini, and the latest acquisition, the Supernote A6X2 Nomad. Of all of these I like the Nomad the best by far for note taking. For writing longer form articles, research papers, and creative essays using e-ink, which of the Tab Ultra C Pro or Tab X would you recommend? I intend to use my Nomad for handwritten notes but I'm looking for a distraction free e-ink solution for typing up my articles and papers. Although I love the design of the Remarkable 2's keyboard folio, the typing experience is not quite there and leaves a bit to be desired, so was think Tab Ultra C Pro considering the portability the keyboard offers, but also love the idea of the larger screen on the Tab X.
Those Eink as note takers are all laggy . All boox all Remarkable all and all are only one single thing - Laggy in hand write , pixilated , Low resolution .. For handwriting IPad is king . And in IPad using Noteshelf 3 is the way to go . And in Noteshelf 3 the way to go is using the fountain pen ( it is more of a regular pen albeit the name fountain ) and under fountain pen you want sensitivity OFF ( but ON is also good) and 0.5 or 0.6 or 0.7 or 0.8 thickness options. That is the best way to go for writing and I have tried them all - E ink and IPad. E ink is too laggy and pixilated for hand writing. For tipping also IPad is exactly like typing on a computer using even the same office bundles . Using Bluetooth pen is much more responsive quick the using any non Bluetooth pen . Bluetooth is a must for the pen not to be laggy . Ipad uses Apple Pencil which is a Bluetooth pencil . Also in Apple Pencil you can use the same tip for 10 years . With E ink the nib is becoming mushroom like and needed to be replaced every 2 weeks or so , even 1 week , and the writing experience which is not the best from the start has a ad decline slop as the nib gets worn so quickly . Also those E ink nibs needing fairly quick exchange is a huge cons. IPad screen and ease and fluid work and color accuracy are vastly superior to any E ink. iPad is the only way to go from any aspect.
Thank you for taking the time to review this model so thoroughly! My neurodivergent brain hyperfixates on a lot of things most tech reviewers leave out, I usually have to watch several videos before all my questions are answered. This video helped me cement my choice in under an hour. I see a lot of complaints about the replacements/warranty so I'll bite the bullet with Best Buy's geek squad.
Hi Kit. I am using Lumi 2. Is Tab ultra c pro significantly better at displaying videos than Lumi 2? I watch videos on Lumi 2 in A2 speed mode and screen is flickering all the time, while in fastest mode you can not see much. How is it on C Pro? thanks
Hello. I was wondering what is your opinion about how the Autodesk Sketchbook is working on this tablet. I noticed you have it installed. I see strange flickering screen while using this app, outside the canvas, where it should be some grey area. There is also some kind of ghosting: some areas that displayed an image still retain that image with some transparency (not very present, but there). I wanted to know if this is an issue of the model or just some problem with my device. Thank you.
@@PhDarchAdrian no, it's just not able to work with eink very well. I'd installed it just to demonstrate that it doesn't work. There are anti flicker settings in the eink centre, but, the pen input will always be laggy and unusable. 🙂
@@KitBetts-Masters , I appreciate so much your input here! Thank you! And your response time is killing me!! Really??? 5 minutes? Thank you for everything! Besides that, I'll never uninstall Sketchbook or discontinue using it, unless I find something better with comparable features or I get eye fatigue or some similar effects. It's probably the short history of the technology and I am grateful for what they already offer and very happy with this tool. I used it in the incredible light of the seaside, reading and writing in splitscreen and having my calligraphy breaks with it... Impecable! So useful and pleasant! Thank you again for your review and the answer here!
@@KitBetts-Masters , one more thing, please. Did you test a maximum SD card capacity on the tablet? I can't find specifications for this, only mentions that there is a slot for it. I would by a 1 TB SD card at 100 MBps (I found a note that it does not fully take advantage of maximum speeds and I also don't need it for multimedia streaming...), but it's not an acquisition I can afford to do it in vain. Thank you.
I absolutely love e-ink, not only because of the way text is displayed but also because the device can carry so many books and have a pretty good experience reading them, especially outdoors. I love Boox devices for their flexibility. I own a Note Air2 Plus and a Tab Ultra C. However, I prefer the Air2. I can install custom fonts on it and the interface seems much more straight-forward. Can't seem to be able to get custom fonts in the Ultra C. I just wish the Air was expandable with an SD card or perhaps a tad more memory. Given this experience, I can't image why anyone would upgrade to the Ultra C Pro. Even if one isn't upgrading, I would go one step down: Not sold on this quite yet as e-ink devices can only do so much. It doesn't matter though, I think going in with the right expectations, you can't go wrong with any device from Boox.
This product is all it promises but they forgot to mention that the display is extremely fragile. It's so delicate that you can not take it anywhere because it might break in your bag. The worst thing is that if that happens Onyx is not taking any responsibility (display failure is categorically denied warranty) so you end up with a brick.
What about writting samples. The main main reason for E- ink is writting. All surrounds it. All others I get from Ipad. Ioad is must . I bought the Tab Ultra C (no Pro) a month before the pro came out. I was rather annoyed when i found out a month later, but even more annoyed that the Air 3C got the nice portrait mode case because that was what i wanted for my typing experience. I bought a BOW mini keyboard which allows me to use my tab ultra C in portrait mode (it has a built in stand). Haven't touched my keyboard case since. (responsiveness is not perfect though). I think the use use case for the "pro" is getting very slim. You need to be typing so much that the quick keyboard case setup is wanted without using a portable keyboard (my keyboard is similar size to a pen case), and yet use apps in a quite limited way so that android is still an option. E.g.Using excel for more than a fill in table is something i'd only want to do with a laptop/desktop, mouse and numpad. It looks like the Air 3 C can fill the same gap with (slightly) slower performance and a small keyboard. If you want to do more than that, you would most likely prefer a laptop/desktop anyway. The €150 price gap between the ultra and the air (-30,- keyboard) is a bit much for that difference in my opinion. Still, i like that they are trying to close the gap on laptops. I just feel the ultra's are not worth it as long as they hover in between a laptop and the air series.
I bought one; but the battery just last 11hrs with wifi on and 2 apps running. I asked for a return at day 15. The customer service tried many things to deny the request. I had to file a purchase dispute with my credit company. The battery is bad; it does not support normal operation.
@kitBetts-Masters Thank you so much for all of the reviews. They are very helpful and thorough. I am currently deciding between the 'Note 3C' and the 'Tab Ultra C Pro' for reading and annotating lots of PDFs. I am leaning towards the 'Tab Ultra C Pro' because its CPU is more powerful, which will give me peace of mind for the next 3 to 4 years, and it works better for larger PDFs. I have decided not to consider a cover or keyboard as they both add extra weight, ranging from 246-507g. What are your thoughts on this? Should I get 'Note 3C' or 'Tab Ultra C Pro'? Many thanks in advance!
A firmware update is need in Boox note taking app : 1. The ability to create table of contents like in superonte a5x and a6x 2. link star should be like supernote do you could know it is registered.
I think the supernote a6x2 will get closer to that perfect note-taking device. The supernote team seems to be looking very long term on their devices by going modular, hopeful that the a6x2 and 5x2 will be 300 dpi. I just hope the new screen saver doesn't darken the screen too much. Thx as always for your work
Really useful video. I bought the Tab Ultra C in July, and there were several things I didn't like, such as the cover being attached with adhesives, the fixed position of the keyboard, and the frequent crashes of Edge, which I use for both work and reading. Since Amazon gave me the opportunity to request a return for this last issue, I took advantage of it to order the new version for just 50 euros more, this time with both the keyboard and cover included.
The big difference for me on the Box devices is the camera on the Ultra as I use to insert document snapshots , brainstorming sessions marker boards snapshots and then insertion on documents ,etc
I’m curious of battery life, I tried air3c and returned it, with my daily use of notes and schematics plotting for work, air3c i have to charge it every night, I used it the same way I used my remarkable for work daily, I charge my remarkable at around day 6. As a technician I have to constantly write down my tasks, part #s, notes, work orders, PO’s, asset #’s, document modifications. So my use on theses notepads is around 4-8hrs daily
Yeah, the battery here unfortunately does not last any longer than Note Air3 C. I'll be making a comparison to the black and white note air 3. That might suit you better. Cheers.
I saw a comment in a different reviewer's video saying that the Tab Ultra C Pro's screen is relatively a little dimmer than the Tab Ultra (non-colour) when relying entirely on reflected ambient light. I am still wondering which to get... I do like the idea of colour, even the relatively muted and limited colours possible in today's e-ink displays, and you made a good point in one of your videos that colour helps with the Android OS and app interface in general. But is there a noticeable brightness difference between the colour and monochrome model displays? My projected use cases are: - some ebook reading - some note taking - some email and social media stuff - General web browsing - Some lightweight graphics work - Occasional use controlling camera equipment (but not critical image judgements)
There is a difference yes, but to be honest it's not at all prohibitive. The biggest downside is the battery life with devices which are BSR enabled. But based on your use case you list it sounds like you'll be better off with the colour screen. Personally I try to use mine now with lights right off and just work in good lighting. Then occasionally compensate with a touch of the front light.
Hi, nice review, thank you. Quick question, does Boox allow the installation of Corporate Portal? In my case I use onenote across PC, Ipad, Iphone and stored in Microsoft Corporate Onedrive. For that reason having the device inside the corporate identity is key., Thanks in advance.
Just found the answer on Boox Support: “Hello,Thanks for your post, our apologies for any inconvenience caused. Boox e-readers don't support work or school accounts, and the work apps such as Company portal and InTune. We will find ways to optimize in the near future.” So Boox is not an option in my case for the moment 😢
very informative Kit your review was what I was looking for re e-ink. I think I will be part of the experiment. Should be easier for my next book and notes etc. Thank you
You seem to like the product and like talking about the product. This one hour video was a complete waste of time for me. I thought based on the "Complete Guide" in the title, for there to be some sort of guide in the video.
The screen is already much darker than a supernote or remarkable with back light off. A screen protector makes it even darker, but it will also let you use a hard nib stylus like the heart of metal. 2
Thanks for your superb informative video! I'm wondering, have you tried using Notion app and any photo editing apps on the ultra c pro? I just want to work less on my MacBook and phone and have something in between for my writing and hand illustration projects
Yes to notion. It works fine. I've done very very light touch graphics work on eink, but anything where you were trying to get colours or contrast right in photos you won't have a good experience on eink.
My first Boox. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have the Tab ultra C pro. Only disappointment- the lack of case options available and no silicone bumper. BTW Volume button page turning works for me. Set it in Kindle>Aa>More> Turn pages with Volume Controls. 😊
What security features does the Pro have? Is there any encryption?
Thanks for the review, wish you include a showoff how the ultra C running tradingview on the web version. That’s the most important part to me 😅
Would adding a screen protector help the Tab Ultra C Pro feel more like the Note Air 3 in terms of a paper-like feel?

The €150 price gap between the ultra and the air (-30,- keyboard) is a bit much for that difference in my opinion.
Still, i like that they are trying to close the gap on laptops. I just feel the ultra's are not worth it as long as they hover in between a laptop and the air series.
I bought one; but the battery just last 11hrs with wifi on and 2 apps running. I asked for a return at day 15. The customer service tried many things to deny the request. I had to file a purchase dispute with my credit company. The battery is bad; it does not support normal operation.
@kitBetts-Masters
Thank you so much for all of the reviews.
Which one did you end up getting?
A firmware update is need in Boox note taking app :
1. The ability to create table of contents like in superonte a5x and a6x
2. link star should be like supernote do you could know it is registered.
You know in Black Books how Fran puts that guy on the phone and he’s all like “Fraaaan, is that you Fran”. This guy has that same husky voice.
I've just ordered c pro. can't wait to jump on it.
Let me know how you find it!

Cheers.
Does it have palm rejection?
Yeah, it's never an issue.
My projected use cases are:
- some ebook reading
- some note taking
- some email and social media stuff
- General web browsing
- Some lightweight graphics work
- Occasional use controlling camera equipment (but not critical image judgements)
This was a great video to help me decide in which tablet to invest. Thank you Kit!!!
very informative Kit your review was what I was looking for re e-ink. I think I will be part of the experiment. Should be easier for my next book and notes etc. Thank you
Sensible choice, I think you'll enjoy the experience. Every time I pick up this tablet I am reminded of just how good it is!
You seem to like the product and like talking about the product. This one hour video was a complete waste of time for me. I thought based on the "Complete Guide" in the title, for there to be some sort of guide in the video.
Thanks for the feedback, it's intended as more of a buying guide. I suppose you were after a user guide?
I have some of those for the Boox software.
I was literally searching a guide on this a week ago because I got one and sad I could not find one. One week later and BOOM!
do you suggest a screen protector for it? I recently bought but am slightly unsure about it
due to losing the paper feeling being loss
The screen is already much darker than a supernote or remarkable with back light off. A screen protector makes it even darker, but it will also let you use a hard nib stylus like the heart of metal. 2
Amazing video! What if you want to use an external keyboard to do your typing?
Yep, you can do that. Either bluetooth or wired.
Great thank you so much!
Very interesting, thank you for that great work!!!
Awesome, Kit. You've given me a lot to think about.
What's the matter with your voice? Not clear and gravely...
Lookup "vocal fry".
What is the best memory card for this
Awesome work! Keep it up
My first Boox. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have the Tab ultra C pro. Only disappointment- the lack of case options available and no silicone bumper.
BTW Volume button page turning works for me. Set it in Kindle>Aa>More> Turn pages with Volume Controls. 😊
Thanks for that, I'll give it a whirl!
Does anyone know where to choose that option of choosing data to be stored in North America server ?? Can't seem to find such option. THank You
