- From Season 10 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 18: The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh, Part 1 which originally aired on February 9th, 1964. Dr. Christopher Syn (alias, The Scarecrow) disrupts England's King George III's 1763 taxation on imports by smuggling vast quantities of goods into the country. Set on the coast near Kent and Sussex, the British troops who attempt to enforce the law are met with a formidable group led by the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. The three episodes were released theatrically overseas under the title Dr. Syn, Alias the Scarecrow in 1963. The U.S. saw a theatrical release in 1975. The popular theme song was written by Terry Gilkyson who composed great Disney songs like Thomasina and The Bare Necessities.
Next episode: • Walt Disney's "The Sca...
Starring Patrick McGoohan as Dr. Christopher Syn/Scarecrow, George Cole as Mr. Mipps/Hellspite, Tony Britton as Simon Bates, Michael Hordern as Squire Thomas Banks, Geoffrey Keen as General Pugh, Kay Walsh as Mrs. Waggett, Eric Pohlmann as King George III, Patrick Wymark as Joe Ransley, Alan Dobie as Prosecutor Fragg, Sean Scully as John Banks/The Curlew, Eric Flynn as Lt. Philip Brackenbury, David Buck as Harry Banks, Percey Herbert as Head Jailer, Robert Brown as Sam Farley, Peter Welch as Stubbard, Jill Curzon as Kate Banks, Mark Dignam as The Bishop, Gordon Gostelow as Ben, Bruce Seton as Beadle, Alan McClelland as Second Jailer, Richard O'Sullivan as George Ransley, Simon Lack as Dragoon Corporal and Elsie Wagstaff as Mrs. Ransley.
Patrick Mcgoohan was an excellent actor!!! Loved everything He acted in!!!
“SILVER STREAK” included?
Never seen him that young.
“SILVER STREAK” is a 1976 movie from 20TH Century Fox.
Secret agent man.
How true that is.
When Disney was Disney and we all loved it.❤❤❤❤😢
Before fiascos such as “THE WATCHER IN THE WOODS” and “SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES”.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u Something Wicked This Way Comes is underrated; Watcher in the Woods is a mess (with its multiple endings) but still kind of fun to watch.
I left out their 1978 made-for-tv horror picture “CHILD OF GLASS”, which sadly used Lexington, Kentucky, as a background doubling for Baton Rouge.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u I’m catching a hint of sarcasm here….i love both those movies!
I was pointing out the titles that Walt himself would have disapproved of under the circumstances.
The Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh gets my vote for the most exciting series ever presented on the The Wonderful World Of Disney. I saw it as a kid when it 1st premiered & I was on the edge of my seat; loved the theme song too! Thanks for posting, because this DVD is no longer available from Disney studios
That’s why I posted it!!
I loved this. Another wonderful production was"Toby Tyler"
Yep, another great one! Everyone in the family enjoyed Toby Tyler.@@stevencraven4897
Someone should follow the book.
One of my favorites, too.
I well remember sitting cross-legged on the floor watching with with my brother on a Sunday night. The next day we were outside playing at Scarecrow! Where have those years gone!
Interesting.
I did the same
This song has bounced around in my head for over 50 years
Interesting.
Wowsers.
Brings back memories of my childhood and all those great Disney episodes I watched. Walt would be appalled at what has happened to his company.
How true that is.
I so agree!!
Might have to think about acquiring stock in the company in order to get certain things accomplished.
Did you hold a seance and ask him?
You mean in 50 years or so, it's kept up with the progress of the times?
How old are you? I'm 68 and I don't think the "good ol' days" were all that good.
I've got a great idea!!!! We need Scarecrows in 2024 to set people straight again
😂😂😂
That might just require the mixing of the philosophies of the movie trilogies of “WALKING TALL” and “THE GODFATHER” all rolled together.
Definitely.
Patrick McGoohan has played good guys and bad and did equally well at both! I've loved his since this very production.
Wonderful in Braveheart.
Much better in “SILVER STREAK”.
That Scarecrow had the coolest laugh ever. He’d have to careful to turn sideways in doorways though.
His buddy scarecrows were not so encumbered.
🤣🤣🤣 Wide shoulders for sure!!!
Imagine how it would look if Herman Munster was part of the Scarecrow’s band of smugglers?
Right on.
That is a great theme song; you can’t help but sing along with it.
If only some more of these oldies stations would play The Wellingtons recording on the radio, especially in drive time.
The acting was top notch in the Scarecrow series!!!
Definitely!
Excellent
Disney at it's height.
Right on.
Oh wow, I remember watching this when I was 11 years old! Patrick McGoohan's Scarecrow laugh made my blood run cold! It made me realize there can be nothing more scary than a good guy with a good cause and who's afraid of nothing!
Just listening to that theme song again sent shivers up my spine!
Thanks so much for posting this!
Considering what's been happening with his company lately Walt must be turning in his grave at about 1,500 RPM.
Looks like WE NEED A GOOD SCARECROW GUY RIGHT 50:19 NOW too , to restore justice & safety in America! Maybe President Trump will be our new SCARECROW?! We need to support him!
I remember seeing these episodes of "The Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh"on "The Wonderful World Of Color"on NBC TV..many years ago. I loved these adventures. I wonder if Mr.McGoohan..was ever interviewed about his work in this film series for Mr.Disney and for his work on"The Three Lives Of Thomasina"?
Kind of puzzling, isn’t it?
I don’t believe he ever did. I’ll have to check my Walt Disney treasures tins to see if there is some bonus content.
There is a discussion with him posted on UA-cam about this. It's very good.
Good luck.
I’ve seen the documentary in question.
This was up against the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I saw neither as we were making the hour long drive from my grandma's apartment. Had we been home, I think my brother and I would have opted for the Scarecrow. I was 11 and he was 5. But the big news at school that week was the Beatles which I got caught up in. Hey, the girls were all in an uproar over them and girls were starting to seem less creepy.
Girls' natural immunity overcomes the dread and contagious Cooties around age 11 to 14.
Rather puzzling.
I remember that as well. We were at our cousins' house and the girls kept flipping the TV to Ed Sullivan while the boys changed it back to The Scarecrow. We saw some of both.
How interesting.
Loved growing with Sunday night having The Wonderful World of Disney, remember all these shows
Likewise.
This series was responsible for my lifelong fear of scarecrows
😢
Really?
Ah yes, the song changed slightly for weekly vignettes by adding the laugh at the end. I fondly remember always being pleased when the Sunday show turned out to be a Scarecrow episode. Thanks again.
So it seems.
I remember these episodes when I was a little kid. Loved it! And it really gives you a sense for the quality of disney's work
Now that’s the spirit.
This historic film was even more exciting to realize it’s actually based on a true story of a figure fighting for justice against tyranny !
Man, I remember this. It was 1963, so by the time I watched it, I was like 5,or 6.
So,so, long time ago!
Very interesting.
As a fourth grade kid I was so intrigued by this! Really great stuff for me at the time and I still love aside from nostalgia. This is just good storytelling.
All the way.
Also love seeing Walt Disney!!!!
Likewise.
The last time I saw this was back in the day when the Disney channel relegated its good stuff to the "Disney Vault" overnight. 1 am they would show these. Thank you.
Blame it on the programming director.
Let’s face it, the generations of folks that would truly appreciate the 50’s-60’s Disney films like this are on borrowed time. Why the powers that be at the current Disney don’t flood Disney+ with this type of programming before those folks are gone is puzzling to me
Disney has shifted their focus away from that demographic. In fact, they even coined the phrase “legacy fans” when they came out and said that they were no longer a target audience. That’s when I decided to make this channel! I hope one day they’ll put this content on the streaming service, but until then, I’m happy to offer it here.
@@keepingwaltindisney Well as a “Legacy Fan” you have my heartfelt gratitude
Apparently.
Obviously it looks like the company has fallen into the hands of lunatics.
Likewise.
thansks. Havent seen this in 60 years
I know just how you feel.
Thank you for posting this. This takes me back to the Early 1970s, Sunday Nights in my Parents Living Room. Id wait all week long for this show to air. It was a big deal to my cousins, friends and I.When I see or hear the Word Disney, this is what I think of.
Must have been nice.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u Thank you. It was great. I Lived for the Weekends back then just like I do now🤣. Saturdays were reserved for Monster Movies, and Sunday Nights were Disney Time.
2028 is the 65TH Anniversary of the movie, and a re-release will probably be in high demand possibly.
What great production value! Love these old shows!
DITTO!
A fantastic show! I wasn't around when this show premiered - I was born in '89 - and yet, I loved watching this series. It's like what my dad says, TV was better back in the day and more and more, I agree with him. Even when I was growing up, TV overall seemed better quality than it is now.
Either was I! Born in 74…and I just fell in love with stories like these and other classic Disney programs! Glad you are enjoying them, too!
I loved this when I was a kid! Loved to see Walt's original intro. Great quality! Thank you!
The Scarecrow's twisted smile and raspy voice was scary. It was years later, after seeing something else with McGoohan, I realized the Scarecrow's smile matched his own!
Thank you so much for the posting. Looks great
Some of the scenes from this like the arrival of the press gang should be edited into the theatrical version for possible 65TH Anniversary re-release, especially if re-released among small town one-screen walk-ins and drive-ins still using the old time projectors 📽.
Plus, if enough of the stockholders got together, this would be on DVD in retail stores as well as mail order houses, and the board of directors would be at the stockholders mercy under the circumstances.
One of the few three-parters on Walt Disney presents!
Yep.
I saw this when it premiered in 1964. I was ten years old at the time and already somewhat of a rebel in school and in my family and I loved this program. Five years later, I was a high school revolutionary, a member of the Students for a Democratic Society, Weatherman faction, and I'd like to thank Uncle Walt for planting the seeds of rebellion and revolution in my pre-adolescent soul which blossomed into a revolutionary commitment which is still alive and well as I approach 70 years of age.
He fought for freedom FROM looting.
Nearly 70yo and still an idiot. Grow up.
If the SDS had their way, we'd all be living under tyranny.
@@AndSendMe The risk is that you become what you fight against - the revolution eating her children.
Meaning, he fought against taxation without representation.
I was a bit too young at the time I remember being terrified of the Scarecrow.
Sounds obvious.
Great series!
Yes indeed.
If ever you visit England, come to the little town of Rye. It's next to... Romney Marsh.
Scarecrow is like England's Zorro.
More like their Batman since he uses a lot of "scary" imagery to strike fear in his opponents.
More cultural appropriation.
I like the comparison to Zorro….and Robin Hood is another.
Quite possibly, but Don Diego Del La Vega wasn’t even born yet.
Perhaps so, but keep it in mind Bruce Wayne wasn’t even born yet either.
I love this when I was a little kid.I used to sing the anthem of it... Scarecrow, scarecrow, the soldiers of the king feared his name, scarecrow.
Walt seemed a little too eager to introduce those scarecrow masks.
He timed it just fine.
Needs to be on DVD
It’ll probably take an act on the part of the stockholders and a miracle to get it into the retail stores and mail order houses.
It is.
@@EricDeBlackmere Yeah....for over $200.00. NO WAY!
This series was great. Another great hero fighting tyranny like "Zorro."
@@MarklovesAngels So many parallels to Zorro with one exception: Sgt Garcia 🤣
A great film...it's a shame how Disney has changed. Walt was a great guy
How true that is.
When kids were kids
Innocent days
This takes me back to better times. Loved the 'Zorro' series starring Guy Williams. The great theme song.
Also, 'The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca' starring Robert Loggia. Another great theme song.
I have Elfego Baca on this channel! ua-cam.com/play/PLziMmVShwVhbA3ZeAP1unThr7AbbRCplC.html&si=mlo1INm1G65HDRGv
Good to know.
Featuring the late actor Robert Loggia before he became the villainous father-in-law of the character Stallone played in “OVER THE TOP”.
February 9, 1964! We were all watching the Beatles on Ed Sullivan!
That’s right!!! A big reason why not too many people
Knew this was on the Disney program!
Apparently yes.
Obviously.
Wow! I haven't beard this theme song since forever!
Unusual.
Such a wonderful life it was !
Especially when the privatized ownership of gold bullion was still prohibited by federal law.
There were real smugglers along the English southern coast
I know.
Walt Disney was an awesome Man!!!
Yes indeed!
Thank you SO much for making this available to us!! I could watch this over and over. As a child I liked it and sang the song often, though I didn't understand much of it. But the story is fantastic for adults as well. Extraordinarily great acting. And so nice to see Mr. Disney. We appreciate this!
What a wonderful comment! I’m glad you love this and get to experience the shows once again as an adult!
And you've made a lot of people happy by going to the trouble to upload it for us❤️
Apparently.
Same here.
How true that is.
The theatrically released version also needs to be re-released for the 65TH Anniversary in 2029, especially with the scenes involving this first press gang edited in for extra measure.
I’m working on uploading the theatrical release right now!
Good luck.
I will not make any deals with you, I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed, or numbered!
I am a Scarecrow!
Most interesting.
Be seeing you!

I THINK I SPEAK FOR ALL OF US BOOMERS WHEN I SAY WE SO FORTUNATE TO GROW UP WHEN WE DID!!!
Now that’s the spirit!
I really like those plastic party hats they are wearing. I thought all of this stuff would be on Disney+ and they did have a lot when it first started. But now it is harder to find on there.
Yeah, wardrobe could have just glued black cloth onto the plastic. Plastic party hats didn't come into wide military use in England until 2002.
Definitely.
Obviously.
When Kay Walsh brought down that cleaver, that horndog went flaccid in half a second.
Wouldn’t surprise me none if that Petty Officer was biologically related to Captain Bligh.
..finally someone who loves magic not mayhem..😮😊😊..
Apparently.
I think McGoohan might be scarier with the mask off.
That depends on the character in question.
Another series I wish Disney would give a Blu-Ray Special Edition rerelease or at the very least bring to Disney+
There was a bluray release through the Disney movie club, but that org is closing its doors 😭
Alas, how sad.
George III reigned from 1760 to 1820. Do you mean the action is set in 1763, not 1736? Would make sense since this would have been made for the 200th anniversary of these events.
Thank you, that was a typo. Corrected!
And the wooden tombstone for Joe Ransley in the graveyard read that he passed away in 1775, in part two that is.
So far so good.
A classic
All the way.
My vote too

Poor Mr. Disney if he could see Disney now he would cry
Apparently so.
Mitt, is that you, with your binders full of wymyn?
It’s spelled M-I-P-P-S.
Back when Disney was fabulous not fearsome.
Likewise.
1:51 This is where Walt famously mistook the literary character of Dr Cristopher Syn as a real-life person. Dr Syn was about as real as Sherlock Holmes.
Yeah, even the greatest among us err from time to time.
The proper word, grammar wise that is, happens to be E-R-R-O-R.
Because it was at a dinner party when William Shakespeare quoted, “To error is human.” He didn’t count on a young busboy named Alexander Pope rearranging his words by dropping the ‘O’ and the ‘R’ changing error into err, and to make matters worse, that young pipsqueak had the nerve to attach “To forgive is divine”. Therefore, Alexander Pope has paid for his error of twisting Shakespeare’s dinner conversation words around by going to H-E-Double-Toothpicks and the eternal lake of fire.
Actually, he said that Dr. Christopher Syn was more of a combination of Jeckyl and Hyde.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8uThanks for the history lesson.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u Actually called him a real person after he held up the book at 1:36 and at 1:47 calls Syn "one of the strangest characters who ever lived." And to your point, he called Syn a " _real life_ " Jekyll and Hyde. If anything he was actually a _literary_ Jekyll and Hyde. And then the statement "He lived in England nearly 200 years ago". No. He didn't. And he wasn't referring to the novelist because the first Dr Syn novel wasn't published until 1915 and the author lived until 1972. Oh, and along the lines of 'err' and 'error' you'll find that it's actually spelled Jekyll and not Jeckyl.😊
360p? No thanks.
To each his own.
REMAKE TIME!!!😀😀😀
I don’t know if Liam Neeson could pull it off, especially since his remake of ‘Rob Roy’ flopped at the box-office.
This is The Walt Disney that was unquestionably true family entertainment, superior, and far, far, better than the likes of today's "Woke" Disney, and Bob Iger! Patrick McGoohan, years before "THE PRISONER" and "ICE STATION ZEBRA" (1968) delivers a five star performance as "Dr. Christopher Syn", alias "The Scarecrow", in this Disney-British production that was edited into three parts on NBC's "THE WONDERFUL WORLD OF COLOR". Woke Disney today, is nothing more, but lousy remakes, Marvel, Star Wars, and a TV network, that used to be ABC, but carries the stench of Iger's Disney, and their stupid policies! Entertainment like "The Scarecrow Of Romney Marsh" is pure Walt Disney, back when their founder labored heavily with good, clean family entertainment!
While I have disdain for the term, “woke” I can’t completely disagree with your assessment. I love to celebrate the productions of Walt here on this channel! I hope we can keep the conversations positive and focus on enjoying this rich content from the past.
Don’t forget about classics like 1970’s “THE MOONSHINE WAR” and especially “1976’s “SILVER STREAK”.
Perhaps undiscovered is a better term under the circumstances?
“Walt Disney’s wonderful world of colour”, not much use of that with all the day for night scenes in this episode.
Blame it on the technicians.
I caint hur this fer s---
Audio too low obviously.
When Disney was... Disney
How true that was.
They had a way of making entertainment for all back then. Republicans would approve of the tax evasion and Democrats would love taking from the rich to give to the poor. I wonder if Monty Python's "Dennis Moore" sketch was based on "Scarecrow." Similar theme songs.
I doubt that Monty Python would look to Disney for any kind of inspiration.
@@user-wi6sh6vh8u Only if they were making fun of it.
