The Making of The Lion King Part 1
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 вер 2011
- This is from the first of 4 parts from the Laserdisc edition of The Lion King.
As an avid fan, I personally have not seen this footage anywhere else yet and a few of my friends wanted it posted on youtube so I decided to help share it with the world.
It is hosted by Robert Guillaume (Rafiki) and covers how the characters were designed from the live models, the music and shows a few scenes of the storyboard process.
I hope you all enjoy.

90s Disney had such soul. They produced Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Lion King, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Tarzan, Hercules, and the great Disney Channel shows. I grew up with the great 90s Disney movies. ❤️
The 90s was the last singular honest decade
I am one of those kids that got really inspired by this and all Disney films, and now, at age 23, I am one of the artists making the remake of The Lion King with Director Jon Favreau. Still can't believe it!
Seriously?? Are they changing some parts in the story?
Wow thats amazing! Congrats on landing the job, can't wait for the movie to come out!
Congratulations! I'm sure you'll make it great!
The making of Aladdin is also stunning. They invited young animators to the set for part of it.
God I miss hand drawn animation. Its a crime we dont do it anymore.
Are crazy
Hand Drawn Animation is coming back soon!
It's still popular very popular.
Well, make it
but just imagine how exhausting it is... not an easy task at all, especially when there are simpler alternatives
Jeremy is a god. I have to say him and James both have such deep powerful voices
The thing that enhanced Scar for me was how lean he was in comparison to Mufasa. His physical appearance stated rightaway how hungry he was for the crown. As I got older and learned more about the basis of this story- Shakespeare's literature-it made sense. In Julius Caesar especially there is the passage where Caesar most fears Cassius because he recognizes how lean and ambitious he is. You have to believe this was considered when designing Scar.
well in fan fictional theory and fan art, Mufasa and Scar's (Taka) father looked like Scar but with a flowing mane like Mufasa. And Taka (Scar) got his scar from two fan theories. 1. He and Mufasa where playing around a waterhole when a water buffalo got startled and kicked him the face and scraped his eye. 2. He was punished by his father for a bad event he did. Course those are just fan theories
oh my god..i cried 3 times just with this video..can't imagine watching the other 3.. o.O
it's so funny how they say "oh we just hope people remember this film and it touches hearts..it won't be that big a deal" and you're like =O
Am now 35 years of age and still, this is my favorite cartoon of all time the lion King.
To this day I still watch and mimic the lines and lyrics of this masterpiece.
I love seeing making off's of movies! Thanks for sharing! ^^
I never knew Jonathan Taylor Thomas played Simba. Oh my gosh!!
This movie marked my childhood and I'm pretty sure it has marked the lives of millions (if not billions) of other people. I'll forever be grateful to Disney, the directors and everyone involved in the making of this masterpiece. Can't wait to watch its remake this year, I sincerely hope they wont screw it up.
So Mufasa's voice actor is basically Darth Vader?
lol, awesome.
"Simba, I am your father" xD
aww that is soo sweet!!
This film has to easily be the most influential disney film for me and many others! the story line is timeless, just like many other classic disney animations, But for me what makes it really stand out are the timeless soundtracks that accompany it. they have purity! and because of this such classic all-time film, it has inspired me to become a film director :)
This was my favourite movie as a child, my dad drew a copy cover of The lion king, he was an artist for a few years before I was born I wish I had the drawing
thank you so much for uploading this! ever since i've seen those discs laying in my animation school i've been crazy about them! wanted to watch them so badly ! thanks!
by far one of the most beautiful films ever made in animation; best ever film EVER! hans zimmer is my hero
The Lion King has and always will be my favorite Disney classic of all time. It didn't only teach me about life, but it also taught me of how to live my life. I'm 18 and for so long I thought I was stupid for giving up on my dream to be an artist. But seeing this gives me new hopes and new dreams. If I can't be an artist, I still can work with Disney right? :3
Follow your dreams!!
this movie is so UNIQUE, inspiring, emotional and amazing! I love it I'm 19 and I know every words by heart. This documentary is very interesting!! thank you for posting it on youtube. As a disney fan, I like watching how artists made their work and they were inspired. :)
THANK YOU a million times for posting this. Best movie ever made, in my opinion.
This was the most touching and amazing thing I've never seen. Wow. You go Disney.
Dude! They didn't mention that Jim Cummings was Ed!? That's not fair, it takes A TON of talent to make a character that doesn't speak so memorable! I also had the opportunity to meet him in person and he was PRECIOUS, the total opposite of the villains he gets casted as and more like Winnie the Pooh (who he also voices) give Ed some credit, he's my favorite hyena!
ughhh i could listen to james earl jones talk all day long, they seriously could not have picked a better mufasa!
They knew how to pick the right voice actors.
Disney was better at everything in general back in the late 80s and early 90s. Better animation, better vision, voice casting, music, musical guests and contributors... fueled by pure talent, not by soulless cgi animation, pop culture references, and “star power”...
On one hand I agree that I don't like popcultural references in Disney movies. On the other hand those popcultural references are the most prevalent in Aladdin, which belongs to the time period you seem to hold up high. Sooo, bit of a contradiction right there?
Lion king copied kimba the white lion
90s dressing style was fab 😅
Thank you for sharing this with us!
It was great to see this again, t was an awesome special.
I love the lion king I always watch it all over again
The animators are the ones responsible for making Scar and Simba sooo handsome, along with their voices!!
you rock dude, i saw this documentary on youtube a few years ago but they took it down, thanks for putting it up
What a beautiful beautiful movie ! This is why I continue to watch it every day !
This is SO inspiring. I lovee seeing creative processes!!
RIP Robert
This was a great movie, and i like learning how it was made, very inspiring.
I really just came to see JTT.
I wonder if Disney had any idea of how big and prominant of a movie this would become. I am 19 years old and this movie came out the year before I was born. To this day it is still my favorite movie of all time. It continues to be a hit among children as well. I showed this movie to a group of 1st - 5th graders who normally despise movies. They sat through the entire movie and even wanted to rewatch it! Truely a Disney classic :)
Mufasa's voice is AWESOME. As is Nala's and Scar's :D
The music from this movie will make me cry just as much as the movie its self.
I was born the year this film came out, but it always has been a favourite of my mother's and always will be.
thanks for posting!
Some things that I always missed about the first release of TLK in DVD back in 2003 were interviews with the actors and actresses who gave their voices to the characters, as well as some clip on the making of (adult) Nala (my favourite character by far) the same way that there were clips on the other characters. But I´m talking about the Spanish version of that DVD, mostly. I wonder whether the content was the same for all DVDs in all languages...
Yeah, they inspired me. :]
I'm pursuing my career to be an animator myself. I'm only a senior in high school, but thanks to a class I got to take, I've been exposed to how an animated movie is made. I can't wait to get to Disney or Pixar one day! :]
Amazing I love it
james is so wise the mask is the animators drawing while the voice is you inside the character under that mask
It's funny; usually when I watch TV specials like these today, I feel like the host becomes over-assumptive with how influential the film will be. With this though, absolutely everything said by Robert Guillaume is 100% correct if not overly modest of the influence this film has had on my life as well as thousands of others. This was the first movie I ever saw in a movie theater at the age of 2, and I am now aspiring to be an animator because of it!
I love this.
Wooow I just love it 😍😍😍😍
It's 2018 and I still miss it.
Some people might find Frozen better than this film, but honestly in my opinion, that movie is nothing but crap. The Lion King isn’t just a movie inspired by Hamlet. It teaches you of life and how struggling it can be. It teaches you about betrayal, love, and so much more. This movie made my love for Africa and the African culture grow even more. I’m very inspired by Walt Disney and look forward to successfully launching my own production company. This movie deserved to be my all time favourite movie, and I highly doubt that that would ever change. Hope my confidence doesn’t fall.
This movie has inspired me so much ever since I was a little girl :'( I love the Lion King so much and I find it very sad that we have moved to all this 3d junk all of a sudden! People should really look back into this stuff and see where the real magic came from. Sure not all of the films that are out now are bad, but THIS is where it all started! I hope that makes sense.
I can't wait till I am older and I can get a job in the animating industry :) (I'm 14 so haha)
I love the Lion King!
The greatest movie of my lifetime.
still the best opening to any movie ever
this is such good quality! is this what laserdisc truly looks like?
Oh my god, sooo crazy! Just looked alle the actors up, who synchronized the animals.. It's so funny, to see how they changed. For example the young simba.
Or the old simba, who is together with Sarah Jessica Parker! :D Oh my god.
I'm still in love with this movie! It's soo awsome.
The last TRUE Disney classic!! Sure, there were others after that that was great, but not comparable!
Jeez those artists are so damn good makes me weep
this is my favourate. i hv watched it a million times
same o.q
DID YOU KNOW THIS MOVIE IS A RIP OFF??????
still cry at this at 28 yrs of age x
hans zimmer is my hero and i wanna be a director, an animator, voice actor and a composer. ANYTHING to do with animation, its by far the most beautiful way of making film!

@blueguppies ya I know but if this stuff is added onto the DVDs and Blu-Rays they would make a heck of alot more money if they like making so much of it and i know theres more then this there probably just saving it all for the next release in the future whatever new thing comes out after blu ray - there just really stupid - im even trying to find the Lion King Platinum Edition DVD - I only have the VHS and blu ray - but thanks alot for posting this - I really love it
I am quite sorry about some of these parts going missing. Disney has gone and claimed copyright infringement so I had to remove parts 2 & 4. However, due to my laptop hard drive crashing I have to find these again in my backup files. They will be back but I'll have to alter them a bit. Again I do apologize. Curse you Disney!
Where is Mr Bean as zazu?? Great video. Perfect one i had been looking for. Thanx alot!
JTT, FTW! The 4thg rade version of me loved The Lion King because of that. :) And, because it was such a wonderful movie. :)

Which version of the DVD is this? Im doing TLK for my dissertation and this would be really helpful! thanks =)
Actually this is not found on any version of the DVD releases or Blu-rays thus far. ;) Your dissertation? Might I inquire as to the specifics?
why are the heyenas are like ed,edd n eddy XD
I wish they would make the lion king relax and stright novel oliver twist Europe to promote oliver twist the rescuers Bambi a life in the woods between lions and leopards scar being leader of the leopards simba become relax tidy and careful and success of the great character
It’s actually from both the Deluxe Edition VHS and Deluxe Edition Laserdisc from 1995! Both of which I don’t own so I can’t bring my opinion on them!
Will you plz reload pt 2? It’s got concept art, storyboards, and pencil tests! I’ve watched it just one time many years ago and I definitely want it back.
Casey Martin I actually have managed to get Part 2 uploaded... finally. I am however worried about having my account penalized for it so it’s private at the moment. This one was especially hard to get and 4 isn’t being much better in terms of my content being inaccessible in terms of backups and my original source no longer works to retrieve them.
Oh. Well let me know what you think in the future. Sorry to hear that.
Casey Martin it’s quite alright. I did just double check and my part 4 link is an error 404. I can attempt to get my hands on it again but it’s a long shot.
I do want the whole thing on here. Part 2 is an hour and a half. Plus it bothers my ocd so much to have had to remove them lol
between lions and leopards scar being leader of the leopards simba become relax tidy and careful and great character
I always cry! It was even worse when I saw it on west end. :(
