So happy to see this is the top comment. That scene elevated the episode to one of my favorite hours of television of all time. It stands alongside "The Inner Light" and "Blink".
As a day one "The Orville" fan, I REALLY appreciate you calling attention to this show because it is truly THE Star Trek for today (Strange New World is actually excellent too, surprisingly). Thanks Jeremy!
Excuse me? According to real Star Trek, Kirk met Pike once! Just once, when command of the enterprise was transferred to him he didn't serve with him and certainly didn't like playing with the male crews eggplants!
The Orville is a criminally underrated show. It is fantastic. I love the humor that it brings, while the thought provoking problems give it perfect balance. Each character and their relationships are so well written. I could rant on this too long. Everyone should just go watch the Orville. 👍
I love McFarland's humor but this show IMO is the best he's ever done. It made me feel like I haven't felt in a couple of decades since The Next Generation was on air.
If this show made you feel like TNG, you should give Deep Space Nine, and Voyager a try. They are Star Trek, they are worth it. My favorite is Voyager. But what he says in the end of this review, if you are looking for a show that is still being aired, "that is Star trek", thw Orville is it. Unfortunately, enterprise, discovery, Picard, and under decks don't give anywhere the same feeling as the first 4
S1 & s2 were so good but The Orville: New Horizons really took it to the next level! I loved it and love all the characters. I’ll be so disappointed if it’s not renewed for at least another season or movie!
I have to give props to Isaac's actor, I do not know how he does it, his character demands that: he cant show his face, he cant significantly change the tone of his voice, he cant show a lot of physical emotion. An yet he is able to consistently communicate an incredible amount of emotions through simple pauses and slight body movements, not only that, but because of the story sometimes he has to carry the emotional core of entire episodes, now THAT is a great actor.
Agreed! When you see him in his ''human form'', it's crazy how good of an actor he is too because he still makes you believe he's a robot. Great performance for sure!
@@Lazypackmule What really surprises me, is that Data had his face to work with at least, so did Spock, Isaac doesnt even get that, most of the time he has to do all the heavy lifting while wearing an expressionless helmet.
@@pizzapicante27 And it isn't something like The Mandalorian where it's still just a guy wearing armor all the time, it's a robot that just happens to be played by a guy in a suit, with very few unnecessary movements and barely any 'body language' to speak of, it's a hell of a feat
I'm so happy you've covered this show - I came in at season 1 thinking this would be just a fun comedy Star Trek TNG (which it was for a bit, and that was fine with me). With season 3 especially though I feel like it's evolved into one of the best legit science fiction shows on TV right now, in turns exciting, moving, tense, action packed and genuinely thought provoking. If they don't renew it for season 4 now that it's truly begun to realise its full potential it would be a crime against quality television.
I agree, Alan. Although it’s a blatant copy of TNG (even the episodes are similarly themed), the show has evolved, matured and has become less slapstick. It has replaced the slapstick with more serious - but not so serious that it spoils it - episodes. It’s thought provoking, as well as all the other very apt adjectives you use. Fingers crossed that The Orville gets another (well deserved) season. P.S. I will say, however, that I think that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, just about gives it a run for its money, but The Orville still currently (comfortably) pips it.
Season 2 fully hooked me and season 3 exceeded my expectations in every way. Thought provoking plotlines, incredibly emotional and believable acting, unreasonably good CG, substantially improved comedic timing/ tone, everything was amazing every episode with few exceptions. This might be my current favorite show and I can't wait for season 4.
This last season's poincy and acting on The Orville was top notch. That being said, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is definitely a large step forward & embraces the classic Trek.
@@UA-camcanbitemyhairybanger What the heck are you talking about? James T Kirk is only in the last episode of the season in an alternate timeline future??? The kirk throughout the season is kirks older brother Sam! Geez.
Strange New Worlds lost me when I read about a scene showing the Jan. 6 riots. It showed a lack of subtlety and nuance that I personally see as stupid and hamfisted.
@@cloudtx Don't you think a bunch of people attacking the capitol and people dying during the attack will not appear in like every story book from now on, forever? The people involved will have fingers pointed to them for the rest of US's history. They probably are just waiting for the investigation to end and that stuff will be in your elementary school books.
@Akira Kaze(Vtuber) The footage shouldn't have been used. The way Star Trek has worked before is by using allegory and metaphor. You know why they chose that specific moment in time. It felt incredibly hamfisted and ridiculous. The lack of subtlety is disappointing.
On a related note, there was a Star Trek convention years ago where the polled attendees to rank all of the Star Trek movies from best to worst. They included Galaxy Quest in the poll even though it was not actually Star Trek and Galaxy Quest ranked higher than many of the actual Star Trek movies - 7th best out of the 13 movies.
Thank you for promoting this Jeremy. I've been shouting this from the rooftops for a while. As a lifelong Trekkie since the 70's, Orville truly is the best 'new' Trek out there.
Ît devoloped so much. First season was too many jokes, season 2 got more serious and boy season 3 struck the perfect balance between thought provoking, funny, gritty and such
I truly believe The Orville is a show that can make the world a better place. Its message of tolerance, optimism, progress and ultimately the importance of kindness is so strong that can inspire and impact everyone who watches it. We need a season 4 of this show
I love the idea that 20 years from now, people could have grown up with the hopefulness and positivity of The Orville. Deserved to be popular worldwide
Tolerance? It dos the oppesit if you notice it. It makes "human" culture to be the peak of the lader, while they judge all other worlds costums and traditions. That's not tolerance, that's closed minded and selfish. More then once they break "the law" becours they are the big egosentric culture light and screw other worlds way of thinking, all without any cosequens for themself.
Some of the show's morals are wack as hell, but you can still tell that Seth holds those views genuinely and is mature enough to at least pay lip service to the nuances and alternate views Well, except for the whole Star Trek prime directive thing, which is very clearly just something the show's premise beholds it to, and is by far the most preachy the show ever gets because it knows how weak the argument is under any scrutiny
I was hesitant to watch this show. Not a really a huge fan of Seth MacFarlane. This show genuinely surprised me. It's honestly just so fun & enjoyable. I like the characters. They're honestly well written & super easy to like. And I like the humor mostly. Can't wait to binge season 3 this weekend
Season 3 has, like Jeremy already stated, a lot less comedy in it and throws a lot more 'real world' issues in. I'm a bit meh with this season tbh, but season one and two are fantastic!
This has TNG vibes all over it, I'm glad people start watching it. Most episodes are great, even the not so good ones are still really good and well made.
This is so true. The Orville doesn't reach the great heights as TNG, but it also doesn't hit the great lows either. It's the perfectly enjoyable entertainment managing a consistent Above Average rating. 👍
@@Warstub Indeed well said! That's honestly all I ever want. Yea, perfection is great but 7-8/10 is better than 3/10 entertainment. Like Star Trek Picard... ;p P.s. TNG had a weak 1 season, so while still being 10/10, it does have quite a few weaker episodes. Same for Voyager and DS9.
When the Orville came out I was in love as a Star Wars fan, never jumped into Star Trek bcs I didn’t know where to start but man did I love this series, glad you’ve watched it and loved it 😊
I've been watching from the beginning and I was expecting S3 to be a trainwreck since it had been stuck in development hell for the last 3 years, but for once it seem they actually used that extra time to truly make this series shine
My worries were gone the minute it was announced straight to HULU. I knew they were going to let Seth do what he originally envisioned when he started the show.
@@jdhowell916 I think it's because he didn't actually experience it, so all he has to go on, is that his friends essentially had to stop a hypothetical him from breaking a temporal law, that shouldn't ever be broken, on paper. Gordon that they brought back with them, never actually had to survive for 10 years without any hope that he would ever be rescued, he never broke like the other Gordon did, never had to kill and break his morality on killing sentient beings for food, and never had to experience that fear of losing his family he built his new life around. However, I do hope that a parallel universe was created, where either that Gordon lived a fufilled life, as seen in his obituary, or he comes back as a potential villain.
I absolutely love the way they portrayed him having to kill animals for food as psychologically traumatic. Acknowledging that human ethics evolve as fast as our technology sometimes and that things we take for granted today might be seen in just a few generations to be as abhorrent as chattel slavery, or stoning to death our child bride.
*I love every season of The Orville. I fully embraced their "experimentation" with humor, nostalgia, and world building beyond the ST model. It's funny, serious, and epic ... all when it needs to be. They have a degree of flexibility now that no other show has.*
Loved The Orville from Day 1. And I'm glad to see other fans enjoying Star Trek: Strange New Worlds too here, because that series was definitely a step up from the others.
I 100% misunderstood what Orville was like as a show and now I’m annoyed that I’ve ignored such a great show for so many years. So much better than I originally thought
I had a big smile on my face when I heard my brothers wife next to him over the phone mentioning how sincere the show was only seeing half of the first season!
You can blame Fox for the bad advertising... people STILL TO THIS DAY think the show is Family Guy in Space or should be a parody of star trek because that is what they expect from Seth Macfarlane... the show is a dramedic homage to classic sci-fi shows like Star Trek and star wars and other sci-fi he grew up watching
I think everyone on irville misunderstood too. It was marketed and concepted as a parody, but it went on and became a loveletter to "high" sci-fi like star trek. And its absolutely great in doing it.
I love The Orville. The S3 episode with Gordon's family... amazing all the way through. Scott Grimes acted the hell out of that one. It left me in tears.
I just started watching the show this week and actually couldn't believe how good it is! It took me back to the TNG days and also surprisingly funny! Can't wait to watch all three seasons.
The first season reminds me of old school low bud Sci fi shows, I almost didn't give it a chance because of it. I'm glad I stayed and season 2 was amazing.
Thank you for doing this video. More people need to know how good The Orville is. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a season 4. It is top notch television right now
I read that a lot of the cast already signed to do other things. so unfortunately it's either the end of the orville or if there's a new season, it won't happen for a very long time.
s3 of The Orville is legitimately the best single season of sci-fi TV ever made. It is absolutely incredible. There were like four episodes in a row I'd rank among the top 20 episodes of Trek, ever.
@@Jogwheel I didn't compare to TNG directly, just all older Trek. Orville has the advantage of budget, time, special effects, and a lead creator that has loved and absorbed everything great about Star Trek most his life. Orville is amazing, but it's also a perfect storm.
You articulated my thoughts exactly. I was wondering when they’re going to have to stop labeling this show as a comedy because season 3 was a straight up drama with comedic elements. And it was the social conscious that Star Trek was always supposed to be.
I wish they didn’t end this show. I remember when I watched season 1, I described it as “Star Trek if everyone talked like real people.” This show made the actual Star Trek creators step their game up and make Strange New Worlds
Strange New Worlds is still garbage, I don't get why everyone praises it. If you care about the lore and world-building of Classic Trek at all, you should hate SNW as much as the other NuTrek shows.
I haven't seen the show, but my brother was watching an episode while I was in the room, and I was surprised at how heartfelt and honest the show was with its themes, to the point that, when the episode ended, I just said "This is just Star Trek", and he agreed. I might have to check it out, now.
Another great show I think you'll love is The Expanse. Personally think its the greatest sci fy show of this era. Felt like a game changer of a show, like how Star Trek OS was for its time. It has ended its 6 season run (and stuck the landing to), so nows the perfect time to watch it.
I watched it on Disney+ (UK), love it. I enjoyed the silliness of first season but also the more serious episode, I really like the debate on morals, religion and gender roles. The optimism of the future in the script is quite refreshing. One of the best shows I have seen in recent years.
@J Hoop Against? It was pretty much all pro in season 3. edit: Thinking more, I take that back. They were against the initial reassignment, but very pro the later reversion, or second reassignment.
@@LastBastian Just because it was going back to the original so they were still fighting for the same thing. So they weren’t fighting for gender reassignment, they were fighting against it. Remember she was born female.
Glad you liked the show and happy to see you spreading the word about it, I feel like to a certain point CBS has been trying to bury The Orville's existence/diminish its reach by releasing new Trek show after new Trek show, and The Orville deserves the love. Though I really appreciated the new season and its serious take on issues, I do miss the humor of the earlier seasons...
Definitely a show that deserves more recognition so thank you for showing it some love I watched this with mum back when it was still airing and we loved it. She grew up loving Star Trek and she by far preferred this over voyager. Wish we’d gotten a couple more seasons but the show went on a roller coaster regarding direction and production companies (jumping between fox, Hulu and now Disney) and then coming to the pandemic, so I get it.
Just started the show yesterday after watching your vid and man… I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting to be absolutely floored by episode 3 of this show. Just the excellent balancing of comedy with very serious subject matter made me come to really love this show.
Thank you, Jeremy! Didn’t expect you’d do this, but I’m so happy to hear you like it! It’s my entry way to The Next Generation! Seth Macfarlane did a GREAT job telling the story if it doesn’t get renewed. But also did a great job setting up for future stories if so, BOOM
Highly underrated tv show. Love me some Orville. I did not watch the latest season yet cuz I was waiting to binge. I really hope they did not extract all the humor that made the show what it was. I'm a bit worried after your review. I feel like season 2 was the perfect blend.
I missed the humor in season 2 but becasue i love treks I still loved Orville s2 and s3, they bring back more of the humor in s3, its a very good blend. Just gotta watch it for what it is, it's a good show, and you will love the humor even tho its a bit less of that.
@@MonolithStudiosMelbourne I wholeheartedly agree I love this show Even though I'm not much of a trek fan, more of a Star Wars EU guy. But the first season was hilarious season 2 had a lot of great episodes particularly Alara's departure and Isaac's two-parter identity episode. and season 3 was just great from start to finish and I will say it got more mature and the humor got a little more subdued but still was great! 👍
I’m not joking when I say this is one of the best seasons of TV, of any show I’ve ever seen. It’s so perfectly tuned and tightly written. I enjoyed every episode, every character and every moment
My friends and I kept messaging every week in absolute awe of how much Season 3 stepped up, I've never experienced anything like it. Perfection. Can you imagine what this show could do if we could just have a few more seasons?!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE how the humor is more like "people having fun at their jobs" at their jobs and not just the "ST parody" everyone was expecting... They remind me of when I'm involved in a jon I love and we are all just part of a great team and enjoying each others company.
Season 3 was really a step up from the first 2 seasons, which I also really enjoyed. That episode with Gordon going back in time was unbelievable. I'm glad to hear you give special mention for it. Gordon is one of my favourite characters, but I was praying that would be the last episode we'd see him in. It could've been potentially the best exit from a show ever. Absolutely riveting episode. That scene with Mercer trying to convince him to come back and him vehemently rejecting the order was honestly one of the most enjoyable scenes I've ever seen in science-fiction. It spun me around. I was hating Captain Mercer during it and couldn't accept his position from a moral standpoint, but at the same time I knew in ordinary circumstances he would be doing what I felt was the right thing. It captured very nicely the dual nature of the human condition - on the one hand a sort of single-minded intellectual and technological pursuit, and on the other a spiritual, social dimension that is, no matter what we try to tell ourselves about our intellectual endeavours, the very essence of being human. One of my favourite 'Trek' episodes... I usually always think of 'Inner Light' and 'Darmok' as great examples of these incredible poignant and meaningful pieces of science fiction. Now, 'Twice in a Lifetime' goes alongside these great Star Trek episodes that truly captivated me.
Thank you so much for covering this show, this show NEEDS more attention so it can go at LEAST two more seasons. It started out overly corny at first because Seth had to appease Fox, then he slowly let the essence of Star Trek bleed on in. And it's been a fun AND emotional ride! I didn't expect to have a few episodes of The Orville to make me tear up. It's not ground breaking (yet) but they still have some great writing and direction.
I'm glad you're talking about this, Episode 11 of season 2 is literally my favorite episode of any tv show. It is the only tv show to make me cry from that episode so it means a lot to me
As a person who didn't have any reference points as i have never watched Star Trek, I am a big fan of Orville from the start. I was a little confused why there was so little comedy in the 3rd season, so thanks for explaining that. But I feel integrating more comedy would raise the show up a notch. We already have a success story for reference in the MCU!
This is amazing Jeremy! The Orville is definitely one of my favorite sci-fi shows of all time and you're absolutely right in your breakdown of the seasons I can't tell you how important it is to have someone like you really push this show this is awesome you are awesome! Great video bro can't wait to see the next one.
Thanks for shining some light on The Orville, Jeremy. It’s a great show that harnesses what made Star Trek amazing. It’s optimistic. It has a genuinely likable crew. It has interesting stories. And gives us a new universe worth exploring.
I've never really watched Star Trek at all growing up. Always been more of a Star Wars fan, that's just who I am. But when this show first came out years ago, I gave it a chance. And I gotta say, love at first sight. I personally believe that this is the best TV series Seth McFarland has ever done. The first two seasons were amazing, playing tribute to Star Trek as well as the Sci fi genre in television. While I loved the first two seasons, they weren't perfect. I never saw an episode I hated exactly, but knew some of them weren't as great. But that all changed with "New Horizons". All 10 episodes of this season were outstanding and perfect to a T. Gordon's alternate family, The dilemma with the Moclans and Kirll, Issac's relationship with Charly. It was ALL perfect! And while yes, some of the humor was cut back, I personally like to think at the point it's due to experience. During the time of the first two seasons, Ed and some of his crew were still relatively fresh to being part of the Union. They were basically Rookies. So during "New Horizons", their much more experienced officers of the Union and known when to be serious and appropriate in certain situations. Overall, this is one of my all time favorite TV series. The first two seasons were classics and the long waited third one on Hulu is simply a masterpiece in my book. I'll be heartbroken yet dumbfounded if they don't move forward with more seasons.
As somebody who loves both Star Wars and Star Trek, I gotta say - Trek is much better. It's much more optimistic and hopeful of the future, and smashes our biases right in front of us. The Original Series got death threats for years because they had the first interracial kiss on television, because in the future, they figured these petty differences that divide us would no longer be. Lightsabers, Star Destroyers, they're all cool don't get me wrong - but Star Trek portrays the Future of Humanity, and that's a whole other animal. Check out Strange New Worlds. You'll see what I mean.
As someone who is also a fan of all things sci-fi, I’d advise avoiding Kurtzman Trek. Allegory is done so much better on the Orville and it’s easy to see Seth grabbed as much of the people from the OG trek shows that if they transported “The Union” into pre Bad Robot Treks Universe it wouldn’t feel out of place at all. SNW did get some praise but I think that was more for it being better than Picerd and STD. Not a high mountain to climb.
Seeing what Seth was able to do with The Orville makes me sad to think of what Star Trek shows have turned into, and what he could have done with the IP.
Jeremy! Thank you so much for watching and reviewing!! I was shocked to wake up last month and realize the Orville was my favorite show on TV-it’s so damn good.
Thanks for the promotion Jeremy! The only way we are getting more Orville, is if it does well on Disney +. So when it hits Disney + later this week, just leave The Orville on in the background for a couple weeks.
Thank you Jeremy, very thoughtful of you! I’ve loved the three seasons for different reasons. I saw the same tone evolution across the seasons as you did, but it felt thematically very consistent to me. I’d love to see a fourth and fifth + season!
I’m so glad you liked it Jeremy . I’ve been a fan since the first episode and I’m sad to hear that they are not gonna do more. I hope they see there is a dedicated fan base and they try to do more . It has some of the best costumes and make up in television and app the graphics have a cool style .
Orville quickly became one of my top 3 favorite shows. Good message, good writing, ok acting, good humor. Perfect combination. I hope it's gonna produce many more seasons.
Jeremy I'm so glad you gave this show a try, and welcome aboard! There's just so much to this show! Y'know if you want to do some spoiler reviews I wouldn't mind at all :D
To me, you are the greatest living movie reviewer of today. This video shows why. Your reviews for good and bad movies are the best out there today. Thank you for continue to putting in the time, effort and thought into each and every video. For my son and I, THANK YOU!
Jeremy, if you're really into sci fi, I would implore you to give The Expanse a chance. I remember you liking BSG so you may like The Expanse too. For me it's the greatest Sci Fi space opera movie/show I've ever seen. As for The Orville. I've never been big on Trek. It was a bit before my time. But I love The Orville. In this modern trend of heavily serialized shows, having episodic stories exploring individual characters and ideas was refreshing.(Even though I will say that New Horizons was a lot more serious and serialized than previous seasons).
I have a plaque replica on my wall of the "Legitimate Salvage" plate in the show. My car has a vanity plate displaying "ROCI". I don't know if you'll see this Jeremy, but I feel like it contextualises, some, how good the show is. I am not one to nerd out like that. I never have before. But The Expanse is both my favourite show, and my favourite book series. Absolutely worth your time. I'd love to hear you talk about it.
I'm in absolute love with the orville and it's origins being it started on FOX you can see that perhaps FOX was pushing the writers to place more humor at the beginning but slowly they writers pushed away from it and season 3 they were unchained to tell some really compelling stories it's awesome that Jeremy liked it
Honestly, I've never sat & watched a single episode of Star Trek BUT I love The Orville. Every character is perfect. With The Perfect Amount of Humor, Suspense, & Drama. One of my all time favorite shows.
On the 1 hand, I really hope this series gets renewed for a 4th Season since I want to see where the characters & story goes from here. On the other hand, if the series doesn't get renewed at least the story ends on a decent note which isn't something many shows can say that wanted/set up 1 more Season but didn't get them.
@@loveislove2359 I totally agree-the parasitic aliens and that whole region of uncharted space on the other side of the Krill where they are afraid to venture could be its own season
Makes me so incredibly happy that this show is finally getting the attention it deserves. I went into this show thinking it was a Star Trek spoof, I was wrong. This show is very much a love letter to Star Trek, but it stands on its own so incredibly well. I love it, I love the cast, and I also love that we get to see Seth Macfarlane get to be a serious guy for once, proves that he’s so much more than sex jokes and crude humor. I adore this show.
Spot on review man. Been watching this show since day one. Absolutely amazing. Season one was definitely finding its footing between space drama and comedy and the nailed it in season 2. Season 3 though has some stand out comedic relief. Bortus and klidan crack me up. But holy hell is their some heavy serious episodes that question and go deep to the core of some philosophy. Some amazing sci-fi. Thanks for coving this show to help it reach new audiences.
It’s a refreshing return to the thought-provoking, weekly story telling that I feel is missing in current television. The humor is there, the heart is there, the sci fi is there. I love this show. I hope more people give it a try do we can get more seasons.
Next Generation was also my favorite. Just a great show. And while Orville has the occasional miss... I think it's quite good overall. And I appreciate what they are doing *especially* in today's climate.
My man! Welcome to the fandom! This is what I said on Jan11, 2019: "That we would have two sci-fi shows that resemble Star Trek and that the show without the terms "Star" or "Trek" would be the far better one just blows my mind!"
I started watching The Orville and Star Trek Discovery at around the same time. It wasn't long before I decided that Discovery was a very good SF series but didn't "feel" like a Trek show, whereas The Orville did. It felt much more comfortable and familiar while still introducing new characters and situations. Once Discovery hit season 2 the balance shifted when Pike, Spock & the Enterprise showed up, but the time jump of season 3 onwards has thrown it back again.
They're sort of two different styles star trek discovery is very miniseries vibes where it's shot I'm a movie format with with Michael being the lead,so it's for her point of view and it's one major story throughout. Star Trek snw is the very old school shows that have 24 episodes where it can been stand alone freak of the week.
@@andrewpearson3516 the point being one show "feels" like Trek, and the other - while still being an excellent show - seems Trek adjacent. That time jump might explain the spore drive tech's absence from either the standard or Kelvin timelines, but it also serves to isolate the series from mainline continuity.
What I truly love about this show is that it has the grandiosity of space while at the same time treating its characters like real humans. What I mean is, TNG is (to me) the pinnacle of Star Trek but it's hard to relate to Picard with his Earl Grey tea and his highbrow Shakespearean slant on things. On the Orville, even the officers are just people who really want to go get a drink and blow off steam after a trying day. I just find them so very relatable.
it also helps that the orville is the only star trek-like show on a streaming service people actual have. my dad and i used to watch tng on netflix all the time, but we discovered the orville after they moved it to paramount+
Underrated show. Ive only just started S3 although I watched 1 and 2 as they came out. Season 1 definitely has more of that McFarlane humour but it almost entirely gets dropped later on, which I think is better once it moves to being purely Trek-like. Great writing and characters and story plots. Its better Trek than any actual Trek being made today sadly.
It’s cool to see some love for this show from a bigger youtuber like you. I’m such a fan of this show. Season 1 did have too much humor for my liking but 2 and 3 are incredible. It’s the first show since game of thrones where I can’t wait to watch it when a new episode goes live. I think it’s “that” good. I’m invested in everything. 🥳
I've absolutely loved Orville since episode 1. They're really bringing Star Trek's idealistic vision of the future, just with a more casual cast, back to the screen. Like you've said, I've tried the new Star Trek multiple times and it keeps letting me down. Both visually and in spirit, The Orville is scratching the itch I've wanted scratched for years.
This has been what has kept scratching my sci-fi itch ever since Star Trek abandoned the spirit that made it interesting. The moral quandaries in this show are fantastic, the cast is extremely solid, and the continuity in this show is so well-curated that it's almost ridiculous. Do yourselves a favor and take Jeremy's advice: Give it a watch.
I’ve definitely heard good things about The Orville and I’ll probably check it out now. But if you haven’t, I IMPLORE you to watch Star Trek Strange New Worlds… it doesn’t feel like other New Trek. It’s definitely more in line with the vibe of TOS. I think you’d actually really like it!
@@Lord_Sunday it's not unfairness , new trek is dogshit, and that's an understatement. you might call it " Let's Tick All The Social Politics Boxes Trek ". Ideologies before story. Strange new worlds is ok. Orville is leaps and bounds above that crap. It actually uses the STORY to make social and philosophical commentary, like the old trek...
honestly i like new worlds, but it feels like they seen what the orville was doing and decided to just do that, no hate, i honestly like that it took a potential paradys sucess evolving into a stand up solid scifi universe to bring trek back to some assemblence of its roots, i hope both go on to more seasons, but definetly give orville a go, it is honestly proper good sci fi, amazing stories to be told
@@elasmar1337 It may be so, or just new creative people did a good job instead of going on with mediocre shows. Good star trek existed way before Orville. Anyway, i like SNW better for the lack of McFarlen humor, but i have no problem with both shows coexist.
@@TheFormActually Dont get mad dude, its uncalled for. I like Orville, i actually think SNW is way better. Don't agree? fine, just dont get mad about it. I do agree social commentary should be imbeded in the storytelling and not be a hammer on top of the audience, so we can agree on that.
Malloys episode was heartbreaking... Even at the end when he consented after the fact when they told him what they did... Like if he knew... He would've never ever been ok with it... Ten years makes a lot of difference 😭
Gordon begging captain mercer not to take away his family was the best and most emotional scene in the series
nah as tear jerking as that scene was, the topa arc takes the crowning jewel when it comes to riding an emotional rollercoaster.
So happy to see this is the top comment. That scene elevated the episode to one of my favorite hours of television of all time. It stands alongside "The Inner Light" and "Blink".
For me it was poor Topa considering suicide. I was in tears the whole episode
On god
For me it was when Isaac shut himself down. Kept me wondering how much everyone affected him despite being an artificial life form.
As a day one "The Orville" fan, I REALLY appreciate you calling attention to this show because it is truly THE Star Trek for today (Strange New World is actually excellent too, surprisingly). Thanks Jeremy!
Prodigy and Lower Decks are also ok
The Orville certainly needs more love! Enough so that a season 4 can be made, or at least a spin-off series!
Excuse me? According to real Star Trek, Kirk met Pike once! Just once, when command of the enterprise was transferred to him he didn't serve with him and certainly didn't like playing with the male crews eggplants!
I dunno they made kirk too all over the place.
Fuck new trek!!!
6 seasons and a movie!
Season 3 better than 2 ? always thought that would be hard to top.
@@ryanwilliams4223 I’ll always love s2 but yes, s3 tops it by a mile! You won’t be disappointed!
@@Temuldjin ah yes a fellow consumer of great culture
@@ryanwilliams4223 can vouch for this, S2 was incredible, S3 is special
I have to give props to Isaac's actor, I do not know how he does it, his character demands that: he cant show his face, he cant significantly change the tone of his voice, he cant show a lot of physical emotion.
An yet he is able to consistently communicate an incredible amount of emotions through simple pauses and slight body movements, not only that, but because of the story sometimes he has to carry the emotional core of entire episodes, now THAT is a great actor.
Agreed! When you see him in his ''human form'', it's crazy how good of an actor he is too because he still makes you believe he's a robot. Great performance for sure!
He does the "Data" thing even more than the actual Data did considering he's an actual robot and not an android, and somehow it works
100%
I'm so happy you've covered this show - I came in at season 1 thinking this would be just a fun comedy Star Trek TNG (which it was for a bit, and that was fine with me). With season 3 especially though I feel like it's evolved into one of the best legit science fiction shows on TV right now, in turns exciting, moving, tense, action packed and genuinely thought provoking. If they don't renew it for season 4 now that it's truly begun to realise its full potential it would be a crime against quality television.
Completely agree with your post.
P.S. I will say, however, that I think that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, just about gives it a run for its money, but The Orville still currently (comfortably) pips it.
agree completely!!!!!!! Best show around and deserves more much more and see it evolve
I agree and absolutely love this show.
They still need to bring back some comedy tho
Season 2 fully hooked me and season 3 exceeded my expectations in every way. Thought provoking plotlines, incredibly emotional and believable acting, unreasonably good CG, substantially improved comedic timing/ tone, everything was amazing every episode with few exceptions. This might be my current favorite show and I can't wait for season 4.
Yessss someone finally giving this show the recognition it deserves! I’m obsessed with it 🙌🏼
This last season's poincy and acting on The Orville was top notch. That being said, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is definitely a large step forward & embraces the classic Trek.
Apart from the fact that Kirk met Pike literally once (when transferring command of the enterprise) oh and HE'S NOT GAY!
Galaxy Quest is such an underrated movie, one of my favorites of all time
Honestly the thing that surprises me about that is that it is so low, I wouldn't have been shocked to see it 3rd or 4th :3
Galaxy Quest was lightning in a bottle. Another great “Star Trek” movie is Master and Commander. Very much a Star Trek II vibe.
@@Spiran_SphereHunter True. For me personally, I think the only ST movies that I like are three from the Spock trilogy and First Contact.
NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER SURRENDER!
Thank you for promoting this Jeremy. I've been shouting this from the rooftops for a while. As a lifelong Trekkie since the 70's, Orville truly is the best 'new' Trek out there.
Same! More exposure!
Agree this has quality writing.
I absolutely loved S1 & S2 of The Orville but S3 / The Orville: New Horizons was Next Level.
I hope by next level you mean unnecessarily woke.
Ît devoloped so much. First season was too many jokes, season 2 got more serious and boy season 3 struck the perfect balance between thought provoking, funny, gritty and such

I absolutely love the Orville series. I REALLY hope they make a season 4.

I truly believe The Orville is a show that can make the world a better place. Its message of tolerance, optimism, progress and ultimately the importance of kindness is so strong that can inspire and impact everyone who watches it. We need a season 4 of this show
based
I love the idea that 20 years from now, people could have grown up with the hopefulness and positivity of The Orville.
Some of the show's morals are wack as hell, but you can still tell that Seth holds those views genuinely and is mature enough to at least pay lip service to the nuances and alternate views
Well, except for the whole Star Trek prime directive thing, which is very clearly just something the show's premise beholds it to, and is by far the most preachy the show ever gets because it knows how weak the argument is under any scrutiny
Facts
I was hesitant to watch this show. Not a really a huge fan of Seth MacFarlane. This show genuinely surprised me. It's honestly just so fun & enjoyable. I like the characters. They're honestly well written & super easy to like. And I like the humor mostly. Can't wait to binge season 3 this weekend
if you thought 1 and 2 were good, you're in for a treat with season 3. it's leaps and bounds better than the first two seasons.
Season 3 has, like Jeremy already stated, a lot less comedy in it and throws a lot more 'real world' issues in.
I'm a bit meh with this season tbh, but season one and two are fantastic!
@AnonymousNoname 🙄 Sure Karen
Like Star Trek Picard... ;p
P.s. TNG had a weak 1 season, so while still being 10/10, it does have quite a few weaker episodes. Same for Voyager and DS9.
@@Warstub I agree. While not at the level of TNG,it's probably the closest show in spirit to it that is out right now.
I have been waiting to watch S3, I loved 1 and 2. Now I know I can binge S3 and not be disappointed!
My worries were gone the minute it was announced straight to HULU. I knew they were going to let Seth do what he originally envisioned when he started the show.
I get the same feels with the Orville that I did whenever a new episode of DS9 or TNG came on. It’s like comfort food.
The "one with Gordon" in season 3 that you mentioned, I'm guessing was "Twice in a lifetime." Easily one of my favorite episodes of the show
That was the first time I really hated Ed. I almost cried tears of anger. I understand what they had to do but damn.
@@Phillyd-cy3ex I was surprised Malloy wasn't devastated at the end
@@emosgowoof dark Gordon hahahah fun idea but would kinda be out of character for his family man persona.
@@MedalionDS9 homage! 😂😂😂 Priceless... Dry jokes is what it is! Family Guy in space!

I also “discovered” The Orville a few months ago and absolutely loved it! Thank you for showing it some love!
I love the Orville. Haven't felt that kind of emotion out of a sci-fi show since TNG. So hoping that it it gets a 4th season.
Just you wait... remember this comment and please let me know what you think about season 3 🖖🏼

Seconded. Season 3 so good and it made me sad to think we might not get a season 4.
@J Hoop Those clauses would have deadlines, by not announcing a new season withing it, the studio basically let them go.
s3 of The Orville is legitimately the best single season of sci-fi TV ever made. It is absolutely incredible. There were like four episodes in a row I'd rank among the top 20 episodes of Trek, ever.
@Bikegasserjoggeravoider I disagree with that assessment. But also, yes - s3 is much better.
I agree. Orville has the slight advantage of running for less than half the episode count of older Trek shows, but still.
@@vrASMR180 You compare The Orville's first 30 episodes to TNGs? Not even close.
@@Jogwheel I didn't compare to TNG directly, just all older Trek. Orville has the advantage of budget, time, special effects, and a lead creator that has loved and absorbed everything great about Star Trek most his life. Orville is amazing, but it's also a perfect storm.
Better than Expanse S3!?
You articulated my thoughts exactly. I was wondering when they’re going to have to stop labeling this show as a comedy because season 3 was a straight up drama with comedic elements. And it was the social conscious that Star Trek was always supposed to be.
I wish they didn’t end this show.
I remember when I watched season 1, I described it as “Star Trek if everyone talked like real people.”
This show made the actual Star Trek creators step their game up and make Strange New Worlds
Strange New Worlds is still garbage, I don't get why everyone praises it. If you care about the lore and world-building of Classic Trek at all, you should hate SNW as much as the other NuTrek shows.
Never watched Star Trek but thought I'd give this a shot. I love this show, just started season 2. It's a lot better than I expected
Just wait until you get to season 3, it's so good!
You're in for a ride, season 2 is where the show picks up and becomes epic.
I'm looking forward to it. I don't want to marathon it too fast and then be sad when it's over 😄

I absolutely love The Orville! Season 3 just knocked it out of the park. We need more people to watch it. It's the best hope we have for a season 4
FINALLY!!! Someone says what I’ve always believed. Fingers crossed for season 4.
I'm more in line of dreading it. They tend to woke-nize ANYTHING that has a LOT attention and fandom... with EVERY CHANCE THEY CAN GET.

Thankyou Jeremy for reviewing this. We need big reviewers like you to reach out to more people. The fanbase is desperate for a renewal.
Definitely a show that deserves more recognition so thank you for showing it some love
I watched this with mum back when it was still airing and we loved it. She grew up loving Star Trek and she by far preferred this over voyager. Wish we’d gotten a couple more seasons but the show went on a roller coaster regarding direction and production companies (jumping between fox, Hulu and now Disney) and then coming to the pandemic, so I get it.
Just started the show yesterday after watching your vid and man…
I’ll admit I wasn’t expecting to be absolutely floored by episode 3 of this show.
Trust me… season 3 is the best season of space sci fi in like 15 years…
I don't watch, but all the reviewer shows I listen to love the new season. They all say it's become a more serious show but it's gotten really good.
Your politics may come into play. I hear it went full on Orange Man Bad by some accounts.
It's crazy because the first episode gave me an entirely different feeling without the jokes and then the nostalgia started kicking in🥲
My friends and I kept messaging every week in absolute awe of how much Season 3 stepped up, I've never experienced anything like it.
It is the only tv show to make me cry from that episode so it means a lot to me
Season 3 Episode 9 'Domino' was basically a movie, awesome show, great characters, loved it.
It does essentially capture the heart of Star Trek and yet manages to define itself as its own thing. I love it. Best Trek in years.

Cannot back this up enough. The Expanse is fucking amazing, you just have to be willing to let it build.
Thanks for talking about the show! Everybody, we need a Season 4, so tell people to watch it when it comes out on Disney plus tomorrow!
The Orville is such a great show. I've followed from the beginning and honestly think it's gone from strength to strength.
We still meed closure fpr eds daughter and the krill and moclans…other than that perfect emding
@@keddievanhalen and we need to revisit the parasitic alien (Dr Finn's ex husband as the host), I feel like they didn't do it justice.
@@loveislove2359 I totally agree-the parasitic aliens and that whole region of uncharted space on the other side of the Krill where they are afraid to venture could be its own season
I like how the final episode provided so many bookmarks for the show. My favorite being the banana.
That episode with Gordon brought me so close to tears and I never ever cry from films and stuff. It was so good
Makes me so incredibly happy that this show is finally getting the attention it deserves.
The characters he wrote on American dad were all incredibly well developed too. The man is a very handsome genius.
I still don't get how Scott Grimes aka Malloy hasn't been in a musical yet. His singing voice is outta this world!
Ended up watching the show because of this video. Gotta say a big thank you for getting me hooked on it.
My man! Welcome to the fandom! This is what I said on Jan11, 2019: "That we would have two sci-fi shows that resemble Star Trek and that the show without the terms "Star" or "Trek" would be the far better one just blows my mind!"
Orville is CRIMINALLY underrated, it certainly shouldn't have taken a Trek fan 5 years to find
Great show. Well written dialogue. Relationships feel natural, actions seem authentic. 3rd season was great.
“It’s one of those shows I leave on even if I’m not watching it cause I like the noise”
I feel you 100%, that’s me with Community lol
What I truly love about this show is that it has the grandiosity of space while at the same time treating its characters like real humans. What I mean is, TNG is (to me) the pinnacle of Star Trek but it's hard to relate to Picard with his Earl Grey tea and his highbrow Shakespearean slant on things. On the Orville, even the officers are just people who really want to go get a drink and blow off steam after a trying day. I just find them so very relatable.
I love The Orville. I've been trying to convince my best friend to watch it, as he's a massive fan of the older Star Trek in its various forms.
it also helps that the orville is the only star trek-like show on a streaming service people actual have. my dad and i used to watch tng on netflix all the time, but we discovered the orville after they moved it to paramount+
If you have a VPN all the different versions of Star Trek are on Australian Netflix.
Just started season 2. Tones are definitely different from the previous one; A gem.
Exactly! I’m so sick of how unfair people are about the new series.
I'm so happy you did this video. This season was absolutely amazing. Several movie long episodes, with movie like production values.
