- Video showing Sikorsky's prototype CH 53K starting its engines and spinning its rotorhead for the first time. The start up is part of the "Bare Head Light Off" phase of helicopter testing when there are no rotor blades attached.

Thank you for no annoying dubstep music
Agreed lol
Real MVP for that
It's still amazing to me that the primary rotor only spins at 185 RPM
Brings back lots of memories, thanks Sikorshy
That is one impressive machine
Great film , thanks .
Imagine siting on that spinning plate
Is there a clutch in the power train on these things? How is it that the turbines are turning but not the rotor shaft?
There is! If you go over manuals of various Sikorsky birds, the rotor brake doesn’t get turned off until the engines have reached optimal RPM. I know verbatim for the Choctaw, there is a system that disengages the clutch from the transmission via an interlock if the rotor brake is on
Sorry!!! Wrong post.
why is there so much unspent fuel
running rich probably cause they wanted to have a slower combustion speed which in term means lower temperatures.
It's not fuel its oil like the previous man stated completely normal to happen from new engines. Every new engine starts up in this same manner for the very first time.
Oil and grease
A fine aircraft, it could do with a repaint job. It looks very neglected....
