Ancient egyptians wore kohl around their eyes to protect their soul from spirits - it's where the idea of the eyes being the gateway to the soul originate
Lala LeeLah I've read somewhere that Ancient Egyptians shave their heads bold and use hand made wigs because they believe their souls will escape. I guess they really were afraid of their souls escaping their bodies. :/
AmiWhiteWolf Ancient Egyptians, were VERY superstitious! Just like any other Ancient Culture! As a matter if fact, about half of the world is still very superstitious! Take countries like Japan, China, Africa, Indonesia, etc. Then, in the U.S, you have states like Arkansas, New Mexico, parts of Florida and Georgia, and Louisiana (Especially on New Orleans!).
AmiWhiteWolf No, they shaved their heads as it would get extremely hot and humid in Egypt causing them to get really sweaty so they put bees wax on their heads then put these wigs on as they were easier than having their own hair. The only reason they don't do it anymore is because of air conditioning.
That and to protect their eyes from the sun shining on them and the of their skin. Similar to why football players mark their cheecks with black. They also shaved their heads due to lice. Lice was very common back then.
The sentence "The eyes are the soul's window" makes more sense after that explanation. I'm a little sad because I related to the cheetah black eyes lines' being able to filter the sun lights, but I never thought about searching more, so kinda shame on me. Hhhh.
Actually, Cleopatra VII and most of the female Pharaohs would have worn an expensive black wig for ceremonial occasions. Other times, they wore their natural hair with a laurel, as typical of other leaders and influencers of Greek and Hellenistic culture. She almost definitely did not have black hair.

Wow thanks so much for this tutorial in school we have this thing call Egyptian day and its basically when we have to dress up as an Egyptian and I also like how you used green eye shadow because a lot of other tutorials used gold and silver but in class I learned that they actually used green and black!!! 😊😊😊😊
I was pondering what and how to do the Cleopatra look. I looked and looked until this one caught my attention. I actually did this one and wow! I'm 10000000% in love. Thank you so much. You saved this Queen of the Nile. :D
Zabrena, I just love these videos! I would like to know what Civil War era women wore, and the "Gay 90's" (1890) to early 1900. Thank you for your research work and demonstration, it's fascinating!
Upper class egyptians didn't have sunkissed skin. Pale skin was coveted because it showed you didn't do physical labor. It was also said that cleopatra was rumored to be a dimi goddess becauase she was born with rare pale skin.
Cleopatra had pale skin indeed, because she wasn’t Egyptian. As a Ptolemaic monarch, she was Macedonian (and not Greek either). “Pale” skin wasn’t that rare, for there had been a Hellenistic population that migrated following Ptolemy. In Ancient Egypt, monarchs were considered to be divine, as god-kings.
Pale skin was not coveted because "it meant that you didn't do physical labor". All Pharoahs were of Macedonian and Greek origin and therefore had white skin. So to be white meant that you were part of the ruling class.

Carolina Herrera Well, in Victorian times, makeup was for, well, prostitutes only, at least that is what I learned. Maybe she could do such a makeup...or am I wrong on this Zabrina?
Jona Kalinka Annie McPringlelova Carolina Herrera You are right, Jona! (Great memory!) Victorian women of society really only wore a tiny amount of rouge and lip stain and that was it. It would be an interesting era to research though ... maybe do a contrast between societal women and prostitutes of the time! ;)
I love it, especially with the hair! Do Elizabeth 1 era, please please please, with the pale white face, etc. You'd actually get it to look *good*! (A lot of the tutorials, the white makeup's crappy and unstable).
I LOVE when you do these! I told my MUA instructor I knew some about history of make up because of you! lol. She was impressed that someone did them for us to see! :)
Wow Z! I am super impressed! You look beautiful and you did a lot of research! I love that It is just in time for Halloween! Is this a hint on what your being for halloween??? =D BTW I would love to get paid in MAKE UP!!! XO Looking forward to the 1930s!
Awesome!! This is so interesting, I love learning about ancient techiques! Please do more videos of antiquated periods, particularly (if there's enough information) Ancient India or the Viking Age!
Hello, I just subscribed! Quick question, the Cleopatra movie with Elizabeth Taylor... Would those makeup looks be considered accurate? I always kind of thought they did them the way they did merely to make Elizabeth (even more) beautiful but after seeing your video I wonder if they could be historically accurate?
+Tracy Herwig Hi Tracy! Thank you for subscribing! I'm not sure so I can't say either way. I know Elizabeth did do her own makeup for that movie but I don't know if it was made to be creative or incorporated historical facts. Good question though!
+Zabrena wow! I didn't know she did the makeup, that's cool. Yours was seriously prettier tho.😀 looking forward to binge watching all your vids and then being all cranky til there's a new one, lol!!!😜
Movies in that era actually had no regard for historical accuracy, it was all about Hollywood glam and storytelling rather than accurate costumes or makeup.
This look was soooo beautiful Z! I totally enjoyed learning all the history on this era as well. Very interesting facts!!! Awesome video hun! :) ~Christy
Marilyn Lujan "respectable" Victorian ladies didn't wear makeup! Only prostitutes and actresses wore makeup at that time and no one really knows what their makeup looked liked. Probably heavy-handed to attract more business.
Whoa your eye color changed halfway through the video. Was it because of the eyeshadow and black liner or did you pop in some contacts because they went from light blue and then were suddenly brown and only blue towards the center
I've already loved this series in your channel, but this is extremely cool!! I love the research you made to explain almost every cosmetic and the functions for the egyptians. And the makeup looks gorgeous
6 years later and I’m just seeing this. Absolutely amazing! I LOVE Binge watching your videos! Your nail color here is beautiful, too!!! I love Cleopatra and she was one of my most favorite Halloween costumes ever! You did absolutely AMAZING!!! WOW!!! Have a beautiful October, gorgeous Z!
"I picture Egyptians as having a more sun kissed look." It's okay. You can say it. Egyptians aren't frikkin white people. In fact, it's heavily debated whether or not ancient Egyptians (of various eras of the Egyptian empire) were black. Cleopatra almost certainly had a heavy amount of european ancestry, but the general populus was at most a blend of African and European ancestry (probably biased towards African)
Cleopatra was entirely Greek, but I agree on the fact that most Egyptians are mixed of North African, Med. Euro, and Middle Eastern. A lot of skin tones vary so it's more to each their own. My aunt is Egyptian, but very light skinned, but also has super dark curly hair. It really varies.
Okay but my main point was that they weren't white people. Not white does not strictly mean black. In fact, I even said they were most likely a blend of African + other... aka still not white.
Cleopatra was 100% Greek because the greek rulers of Egypt at the time didn't want to mix with the locals, so they were marrying each other, which means she was European/white. Ancient Egyptians on the other hand were more dark skinned as most middle eastern people.
Sky Warrior except that the culture across Africa was VERY different. So saying "african" is not accurate, since it does not aply to the whole continent.
you did a really great job, not only is this historically accurate, but extremely doable. and beautiful too. dark hair and bangs are a niche change of pace, huh! you remind me of someone, but it hasn't come to me yet. maybe ashley simpson wentz? i hope im getting her name right
+Alexandra S Right? A lot of people don't realize that she wasn't even Egyptian. She was, however, one of the few Greeks to actually learn the Egyptian language.
Fabian Hale Oh shit! I've been pretty busy lately and have been hurrying to rap up school, I haven't had the time to remember! That's what I meant though, they're completely different but start with M (I always have an excuse)

Omg this is crazy that I saw this, bc she literally just posted a video where she transformed into Elizabeth Taylor!!!

***** You're beautiful dear!
u r truly an artist.. ur videos are so informative...it shows how dedicated u r..u r becoming my favourite UA-camr
Please please please do Victorian makeup!
I was just about to comment this! :)
Carolina Herrera Well, in Victorian times, makeup was for, well, prostitutes only, at least that is what I learned. Maybe she could do such a makeup...or am I wrong on this Zabrina?
Jona Kalinka Annie McPringlelova Carolina Herrera
You are right, Jona! (Great memory!) Victorian women of society really only wore a tiny amount of rouge and lip stain and that was it. It would be an interesting era to research though ... maybe do a contrast between societal women and prostitutes of the time! ;)
maybe she means the white face small lips thing, not sure when that was though:P
Ch1na that's the Elizabethan era
Thank you for doing these historically accurate videos!!!! You are so beautiful!!
Could you use liquid eyeliner instead of gel eyeliner? Great tutorial btw ☺️☺️
+Katykittyluver Sure! Whatever is easiest for you! :)
This was my favorite "Historically Accurate Makeup" you've done. I loved hearing all the facts; especially that Egyptians got paid in makeup!
I just discovered you today, LOVE your videos! ***** Also, do you know your Myers Briggs type?? I'm guessing you're an ENFJ
Elizabeth Norris LMAO! That's exactly what I am! That is too funny!! Welcome to you and thank you for watching! :D
***** I'm an INFJ! We're NFJ sisters! :)
***** I'm an INFJ! We're NFJ sisters! :)
I'm an INFJ too! ^
You look just like Claudette Colbert in this video, and coincidentally, she also played Cleopatra (in the 1930s)! Love your channel.
Wow Z! I am super impressed! You look beautiful and you did a lot of research! I love that It is just in time for Halloween! Is this a hint on what your being for halloween??? =D BTW I would love to get paid in MAKE UP!!! XO Looking forward to the 1930s!
Lancengi LOL! ;) Can you imagine being paid in makeup?! :O Thank you for the compliments, babe! Miss you! xoxxoo!
The bust of queen Nefertiti is probably a better depiction of a much older Egyptian makeup look than the Hollywood movie.
+Thedodicat So I suppose Kleopatra didn’t bear Caesar a son? Or visited Rome? Or was involved in the battle of actium?
This look was soooo beautiful Z! I totally enjoyed learning all the history on this era as well. Very interesting facts!!! Awesome video hun! :) ~Christy
Eyebeautifeye Thank you so much, Christy! xoxo!
I wanna see a Victorian Era one!
Marilyn Lujan "respectable" Victorian ladies didn't wear makeup! Only prostitutes and actresses wore makeup at that time and no one really knows what their makeup looked liked. Probably heavy-handed to attract more business.
Oh, this is totally my next opera date look!! Stunning. Thank youuuu!!
Whoa your eye color changed halfway through the video. Was it because of the eyeshadow and black liner or did you pop in some contacts because they went from light blue and then were suddenly brown and only blue towards the center
+Lauren Solano Contacts! ;)
+Zabrena Could you please share the name of the contacts? Are they the EOS Bubble Browns? Or the EOS Adult Bubble Browns? Neither?
lol!
Going to do this for Halloween, this has to be the most comprehensive makeup tutorial I've ever seen
You look like Liz Taylor. c:
I've already loved this series in your channel, but this is extremely cool!! I love the research you made to explain almost every cosmetic and the functions for the egyptians.
And the makeup looks gorgeous
lol at sunkissed glow .Africans were very advanced and creative
I think you did an awesome job
egyptian, african is a continent not a country.
It really varies.
ancient Egyptians weren't black. they were (in Arabic we call them) phara3in, or Pharaohs. made up of Berbers & asiatics.....
Okay but my main point was that they weren't white people. Not white does not strictly mean black. In fact, I even said they were most likely a blend of African + other... aka still not white.
very mature of you, thanks for the input
Cleopatra was 100% Greek because the greek rulers of Egypt at the time didn't want to mix with the locals, so they were marrying each other, which means she was European/white. Ancient Egyptians on the other hand were more dark skinned as most middle eastern people.
What a beautiful look, thank you for putting so much time into this video!
Leigh Folckemer Thank you for the appreciation, Leigh!! :D
Proud to be an Egyptian :D
Sandra Morcos I love Egyptian people ♡
You should be! Beautiful people and beautiful culture!
Sandra Morcos me too.
I Love these types of videos! Love learning all about the history of makeup!
Glad to see the African culture appreciated! 👍
Taylor McMahan she said appreciated
Its Egyptian culture not "African" Africa is a continent not a country.
Sky Warrior yep its in north Africa on the 'mediterranean' coast 😉
Brianna Linen lol depends on what part of Africa you are talking about lol
Sky Warrior except that the culture across Africa was VERY different. So saying "african" is not accurate, since it does not aply to the whole continent.
You are so super, multi talented!!!! You are great at makeup, anything beauty, fashion, etc. And you are so smart!!! Girl you are something special! 😊
AW! Thank you so much, Ann! You make me blush! ;) xoxo!
i can believe the donkey's milk. I live goat's milk soap. lactic acid makes my skin so soft!
Carmen W. Jones Oh cool!
you did a really great job, not only is this historically accurate, but extremely doable. and beautiful too. dark hair and bangs are a niche change of pace, huh! you remind me of someone, but it hasn't come to me yet. maybe ashley simpson wentz? i hope im getting her name right
Loved how you also provided some history about makeup in ancient Egypt!!
I immediately thought Siouxsie Sioux.
GirtheAlienGoldfish hey, nothing wrong with that. they both rock it well
Such a great idea! Thank you for making these, and please please make more in the future! I Love them and you do a phenomenal job.
Is it weird to anyone else that Cleopatra was Greek? A Mesopatian Greek queen of Egypt
+Alexandra S Right? A lot of people don't realize that she wasn't even Egyptian. She was, however, one of the few Greeks to actually learn the Egyptian language.
+Alexandra S There is no such thing as Mesopatian.
Fabian Hale Sorry it was a typo. She was from Mesopotamia
Alexandra S She was not from Mesopotamia. She was a Macedonian-Greek born in Egypt.
Fabian Hale Oh shit! I've been pretty busy lately and have been hurrying to rap up school, I haven't had the time to remember! That's what I meant though, they're completely different but start with M (I always have an excuse)
You look absolutely gorgeous...you make a beautiful Egyptian!!! Dark hair looks great on you.
This look is so gorgeous on you. Just saying
