I agreed with 99% of your claims in this video. But I strongly disagree with the opening claim that Simmons is the only defender in baseball history who could make that play. It is a very good play, but I probably saw it half a dozen times from Matt Chapman alone last year, and a from a few other players, let alone all of history.
When you mentioned all-field no-hit HOFers, I was waiting for you to mention Ray Schalk and boy, it didn't take long. His induction is NOT a head-scratcher, the man invented many defensive backstop techniques that supposedly had never been seen before, like running during a play to get behind 1B or 3B and back them up. Also, Schalk retired with an impeccable reputation, even though he was a White Sock and was the catcher during the 1919 World Series. Yikes. As for Maranville... yeah, I'll give you that one.
I was always wondering why he’s in the hall. I went to Cooperstown this summer and saw his plaque and was curious. He had the most putouts as a catcher at the time. Also, a lot more impressive, he caught 5 no hitters including a perfect game in career. Ngl I hated the fact he was in before I read that
Yeah but even all field no-hit players like Yadier Molina and Ozzie Smith still have at least 2,000 hits. If he can stay healthy enough for that long and accrue 2,000 hits then sure he’s in.

I watched that first play live at Turner Field! It was Braves opening day of 2015. In the moment, I knew that was the greatest defensive play I’d ever seen! The video doesn’t do it justice!
There isn't much value in them anymore. If you're scoring the same number of runs, it doesn't matter if you've moved up a base in an inning really. It might make for a "sexy" skill to have, but it's technically possible to steal 100 bases & not get knocked in at all, while another player hits singles & doubles & gets driven in 30 times.
@@markwebb7576 SB's are important/good measure of value, (as long as SB% is good too) but the real problem is it's not a fair comparison. Loved the video Bailey! I enjoy when you explain the more advanced stats, both because I think you do a great job at it and because I need to learn more about them! Without your channel, I probably wouldn't have ever learned about OPS+, ERA+, etc... Also I'm interested to see what Simmons future holds, he is a FA after 2020, and you would think if the angels were going to extend him he would have already been extended in the past two offseasons during the extension hype period. They might let him go, they seem to be moving away from their defensive focus with players like Upton, letting Calhoun go, and getting Castro over Maldonado. I'm sure many other teams will be interested in him though!

Better fielder than Jeter. Nowhere near the hitter. But being there every day he is incomparable. Being there got him 3000 hots and 400 plus Homer's. Things never done by a shortstop before him. I'm grew up an Os fan in DC pre Nats arrival. His value is he made me a Baseball fan and someone who doesn't miss a day of work 💯
You ask any player in MLB history to play 162 games a year for 16 years and not miss a day. Barely missed any INNINGS in 16 years too. Which is also.his flaw. Played through injury when he didn't have to. Impacted his swing ( nobody changed stances like Cal!) And his numbers
@@Kylora2112 A so-so fielder? LMAO He's a far greater player than Jeter.
I love the background music, keep up the good work man!
Two years later, now this video is kinda sad :(
Your channel is so underrated, just like the beauty of baseball
Can you do a video on who you think will break the cycle record
RENDON? Even 4 years ago, I would’ve said that was nuts. That’s even crazier to hear now.
How would you feel about some sort of official partnership with MLB? I’m curious about your thoughts on possibly working with them to create content or something like that
That's a stupid question. Of course he'd like to work with MLB. "haha no thanks, I rather be on UA-cam than get promoted by MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL"
@@moegerms You should try to get a role as his mentor since you understand him so well. Not everybody has the same values or goals as you lmao.
He was just traded to the Twins within a minute of posting this. You heard it here first
Of coarse the best Foolish Baseball video wouldn't be complete without the sponsor of The Athletic.
Edit: Why the heck is Andrelton Simmons still freaking underrated...
Unfortunately he fell off a cliff the second after this video was uploaded
Idk who's underrated more Simmons or this channel
Another update: he’s definitely not gonna make the hall of fame and he is playing in Dubai
I love how well you understood the irony of the opening lines.
2023: Andrelton Simmons is not in a MLB Team's roster
you are my favorite thing about youtube right now
14:05 WISH GRANTED.
I used to watch Simmons highlights before every game definitely a top 3 favourite players for me all time
So this is why you’re called “foolish” baseball.
Just kidding, nice take.
Always a good day when a baseball bits episode is released
Sucks that he fell off cause he was on pace for it
I have recently discovered your channel and I'm very impressed with everything
This did not age well….
The first player I remember looking up JUST because of his defensive stats was Jason Macdonald. There is so much to look at in baseball.
2 years later, I'm not seeing this one happen.

You have amazing videos, but this has to be one of the best!
And now Simmons isn't even starting. He fell off so hard. Sad to see. I doubt he makes the HOF now.
All of the Mana music gave me the warm fuzzies.
Love this channel :)
Watching in 2021. This didn't age well 😕
I haven't even watched this yet and I can't tell you how happy I am that you made this video
What vorp?
value over replacement player

Alright Foolish, I'm at 0:00 but You've already made some bold claims, and I'm counting on you to convince me here.
edit: I'm convinced.
Um, what DRS.
Oh wait, cant do this.
How dare you
I don’t understand half the things you say but I love baseball so I continue to watch
Sadly, his hitting is absolutely terrible. The Jeff Mathis of shortstops.
took me two years to learn that people call him simba because everything the light touches is his kingdom
sometimes baseball nicknames are good
