We did that trip in 1986 from White Rock, Wairarapa to Palliser in our (then new) Lada Niva with a mate and his missus in a 2 stroke Suzuki. No locked gates back then. It got me seriously hooked on 4 wheeling!
Oh wow - that’s awesome! I imagine it would’ve been quite different back then... especially with the locked gates. Shame that it has ended up like it is. That’s awesome that it hooked you!
yes I loved that video. I've done that trip before countless times but only from Ngawi because a relative of mine lives there it is quite a unique place out there the seal colony. and that river is called the stone wall creek. if you went a bit further up there is a huge waterfall at the top.
Between you where you camped and the shingle fan there used to be a New Zealand Doc cabin on the side of the hill i don't know if it is still there and from the top of the shingle fan you used to be able to drive to White Rock. Spent many Christmas holidays where you camped the name of the campsite is Stonewall.
From what I understand it's still there but you can only get there on foot. Been meaning to go for a wander one day to see if that's true or not. It's an amazing spot there eh!
Great video. I’ve only been as far as the Lighthouse and that time the seals were lying all over the road. I’ve driven down to White Rock (when I did the Tora three day walk) on the other end as well. I heard that the main reason that the gates were locked years ago was because the huts are on private farmland and they were repeatedly getting vandalised.
In all the times I've been out there I've never seen seals on the road - wonder if it's too busy out there these days or something. Ahhh right - sadly I wouldn't be surprised... Any easy to access huts seem to get destroyed eh - no idea why people feel the need to damage them!
@@OverlandNZTV yes. there was a deer hut close to your camp site its just the remanences and foundation left they had to take it down because people had vandalized it
The camp site you stayed at is called stonewall there used to be a stonewall just after the river crossing that come's down from the waterfall. If i remember right the stonewall was built by a Maori tribe to protect their crops that was back before the White man turned up. My partner and I and friends used to camp around there at Christmas time about 25 year's ago i had a 1978 Subaru estate station wagon 4wd 1200cc highbox only no lowbox .
Good info and film work I've done most of this drive in my surf too, it felt i was there with ya ! ... Ive been caught out in those mud puddles at lake ferry too haha ... lucky i had x2 max tracks
It's a pretty amazing spot out there eh! Ahh those mud puddles - got caught roughly there again earlier this year. Maxtrax did the trick nicely - wicked things eh!
Hey mate correct me if I’m wrong, are you allowed to camp past the light house gate? Where your talking about? I thought your only allowed to do day trips. Have always wanted to camp there? Awesome vid to Overland NZ👍
@@connorcatt1042 you can camp at Stone wall, that is doc land but you cannot camp on the land between cape Palliser and stone wall. That is private land.
4wd in my back yard! Best thing about that spot right in the manukas at stone wall is you can hunt and fish all in one spot! The river and spot there is called stone wall
Cheers mate! There’s a gate - it’s often locked over lambing season - but is open at other times - crosses private land for a while before popping out at Stone Wall (which is in doc land). It’s an awesome little cruise!
Cheers! It's a stunning spot eh - we found the swimming hole on a later trip. We did it years ago with the Cross Country Vehicle Club, it's a pretty sweet trip! Shame you can't drive it as a non-club anymore.
@@OverlandNZTV yeah. Headed around to Ocean beach where you started that vid and all the way around to windy point only to find that it is blocked off and you can't get right around to Wellington anymore 😕.
Cheers Neil! You don’t - from the gate at Palliser to the next gate crosses private land, so they can close it without notice, but haven’t seen it closed myself. Hope that helps!
The sign is for the car park and private land you cross - campsite itself is on DOC land. Pretty sure there’s a year round fire ban there - no idea why someone stared a fire. Saw the damage first hand, wasn’t ideal at all

Hey, Wellington based. Do you know if you can access the Mukamuka with permission?

are you allowed to camp past Palliser? thought the sign on the gate said it wasnt allowed
You can once you’re back on public land - there’s a sign that marks when it changes. From the gate to the sign is private and you can’t camp 👍
Spot you camped is called stonewall. Follow the Creek up to the top is a short walk but an even better waterfall

@T Vass - you can camp at Stone Wall - but nowhere else before that 👍

What about dotteral nests?
nice vid mate, but itsnt there a gate a cape palliser that stops you from going further?

Just done ocean beach to wainui, shes quads only atm lads due to two slips
Have heard it's pretty bad! Hopefully DOC can fix it up - it's an awesome area eh
Nice ☝
Cheers!
What snorkel is on the surf? I’m having a hard time finding a decent one to buy in the U.S. for a 1Kzte
It’s a generic one from Trademe (our eBay equivalent here in NZ) - I know the UK guys use eBay for theirs too. Hopefully you can find something!
Is there a gate at the car park near the lighthouse? I seem to recall that the public road ends there.
There is a unlocked gate - there’s access out to the first park along the track there. Gate gets locked at certain times of year for farming reasons.
Nice filming. There's a great swimming hole at the top of the higher waterfall. Have you guys gone from ocean beach to Wellington along the coast?
