In Toronto Canada, we ALWAYS tell highrise apt residents to shelter in place during working fires. STAY OUT of the stairwells if they are smoky and do not use the elevator. The roof is NOT accessible to residents via stairwell because the doors are locked. Helicopters are NOT used for rescue in Toronto.

Amazing job. BUT we've been complaining about the number of fires as a result of these ebike lithium batteries for months. I just pray the correct regulation, education, elimination.. whatever needs to be done, is done. FDNY iis the best.

This is an increasing problem in NYC buildings--people do not realize these e-bikes or other large lithium ion powered devices pose a danger if they become overheated as then a "thermal runaway" condition develops whereby the cells of the battery burn, become hotter as more of the cells burn and it is a chain reaction that cannot be thoroughly put out with water or foam unless the battery is cooled down to a level that stops the reaction--the amount of water necessary to do that is considerable. These bikes do not belong in NYC apartments--they are to be stored in a bike/perambulator room away from residential units. Most of the users of these devices don't know the dangers involved but this is a painful lesson on what can happen. Overcharging a cell phone can cause a fire on a smaller scale just as easily. Buildings need to enforce keeping these devices out of apartments--e-bikes have no place in a residence unless they can be stored outside away from anything combustible. From what I understand this fire resulted from some idiot running an e-bike repair business out of the apartment as the firemen found about 5 or 6 bikes in the space!
