I noticed on watching this I forgot a step to make the ash order repeat daily. Just hit the clock to do that.
Also, one thing I wanted to add but cut for time: managing cooking restrictions is a bit awkward. Both seed paste and press cakes are treated the same by the kitchen menu and can be found named like "[Plant] seed" in the Other menu (as distinct from the Seeds menu). Thus allowing the cooking of pressed cakes risks the cooking of seed paste. That being said, the seed paste it used pretty quickly so by putting this further from the kitchen than any other ingredients could be enough to prevent paste being used by the kitchen.

Sure would be nice if you could save these automations between runs.

      You actually can! Via DFhack

If you embark in a hot biome and have designated a plant gathering zone with at least fallen fruit collection then you can also use a screw press to press olive oil from olives and use it to produce olive oil soap.

Awesome. I've slowly been building a file of work-orders reference so this was great to hear your thinking and see how you go about this.
My first couple fortresses didn't die but I got overwhelmed not knowing what to do so this automation stuff helps keeps some of the ducks in a row. 😅

I would recommend setting up stockpile links to control the quern.
Basically create a feeder stockpile that can only contain hemp seeds and then have that feeding into the quern. Then have a paste stockpile that the quern gives to.
Then you know for sure that only hemp will be processed.
You might also need to have a furniture stockpile
    Great vid

There's no real need to do it that way since the process seeds job will only process seeds that create oil paste, plus it can create a lot of cancellation spams if the seeds haven't been moved to a stockpile yet. The challenge here isn't about how to set specific seeds to process but to make sure that you have enough left over to plant.

Yes! Thank you so much! I kept getting a ton of job cancellations and was having problem figuring out how to automate things w/o the constant alerts. This was incredibly helpful. I hope to see more of these Advanced Tutorials (would love to see an Advanced Military Tutorial that goes beyond how to make a squad and schedule). tysm

I did my own twist to the ash making,
I just made a check so it will only make ash if the amount of soap I want stored in my castle is not reached, but also if the amount of ash is less than a certain amount. This ensures that I dont make too much ash, but also not making ash when wanted soap amount is reached. This has worked perfectly for me.
I also added a check to each work order, they will stop once the wanted soap amount is reached. So I dont overproduce.

Often I find myself in areas with sparse amounts of wood, or even delving underground to find it. It's usually for beds, bins, and charcoal. So unfortunately I've never dreamed of automating the soap industry, I usually just make a big batch of it a few years into the life of a fortress.

Alternatively, I would specify a condition to produce lye if I have more than one bucket since a bucket is required just to produce lye but not to store it.
And store it in a stockpile inside pots. The problem here is that buckets are made out of wood/metal but some biomes don't have any trees. But pots can be made out of the most available resource on every map - stone.

If you have olives, you can just use those exclusively without worrying about using the seeds up since olives are tree based.

    • @FurtherReadingTV

Yup but that doesn't make up for all the other issues with olives - like how you only get them in certain parts of the world, you have less control over how they're produced, etc. Rock nuts work in every fort and as long as you do the work orders correctly can be completely automated.
