I'd forgotten completely about this song till I encountered it again on UA-cam awhile back. I'm sure it was obscure everywhere else, but it was popular here in Hawaii - as you'd expect.
It was first recorded as 'Why did it have to be me' on April 26 1976.'HAPPY HAWAII' was the B-side of 'Knowing me,knowing you'.It was recorded on May 14 and 24 1976.
I noticed someone had this to say... "What are those black pen marks that keep criss-crossing the screen? I've seen a similar effect on 90s grunge videos where it was (I assume) intentionally mimicking some real-life phenomenon, but I assume it wasn't actually intended as an effect here! Is this a work print or something?" I would say this is a workprint. Those lines are meant to indicate where a "dissolve" is to be placed in the editing of the negative itself (being a workprint, such marks are meant to show how the negative is cut and processed). I've taken several film classes so I know how this is done.
from liner notes to "Arrival"- De-luxe Edition : This cartoon version of "Happy Hawaii" was produced by the Reg Grundy Organisation in Australia. The cartoon project was instigated in 1976 and was meant to result in a series of 25 minute plot-driven films., featuring different Abba songs. However, the project was ultimately shelved, but not before this rough-cut of "Happy Hawaii" had been assembled. It was apparently never screened anywhere at the time.
@Christopher Sobieniak; That was me that posted the original comment- thanks for the confirmation that my guess was correct, as well as the interesting background info! Sorry I didn't reply earlier; UA-cam only notifies you if a response is posted as a direct reply to the original comment (using its reply button), so I only caught this by chance. ("Hang on, I vaguely recall saying something like that... oh, it *was* me!")
Fly ABBA Air NON-STOP from Stockholm to Honolulu. Must have a one-trillion litre petrol tank on there. HAHA :) Great song, great vid, great band. Always loved them. :)
Yes. this song "Happy Hawaii", was released as a single, but when the album was released, the song on it was,"But Why Did It Have To Be Me". same song.......different lyrics. Preffered this version myself and is available on a complete dvd collection of all their songs.
What was the story behind this video? Why did they make a video for something that ended up as a B-side (before being reworked)? Who decided to do a cartoon? Why was this never released at the time? What are those black pen marks that keep criss-crossing the screen?
