As a die-hard metalhead...I gotta say... My mother LOVED ABBA, she would play their records whenever she cleaned the house. I remember watching my mother dance to their music while she was cleaning, and seeing her so content and happy brought me so much joy. I would clap as she danced to the catchy tunes coming from ABBA, and as long as my mother was happy, it brought me joy. I still think of her whenever I hear an ABBA song. "Waterloo" was her favorite song. I miss her so much. R.I.P., momma #dancingqueen
I fondly remember my mom singing and dancing to Abba while cleaning the house too. I’d asked for the records for Christmas back in 1979 or 80. Thanks to the magic of Abba both of my parents enjoyed them so I got to listen to them much more than I normally would have. Your mom is still with you, knows what’s going on in your life. Ask her to send you signs that she’s still there, even to play Abba for you. There are lots of great documentaries, books and podcasts out there that talk about the signs our loved ones send us from the other side. I’m not religious at all but after losing some dear ones myself I’ve immersed myself in the topic for years. Enjoy those memories! 😊
ABBA. They did everything themselves. Wrote. Arranged/Mixed. Produced. Owned publishing. Owned label. Owned studio. Own entire catalogue. Today they still own and control it all. Intelligent group.
And Bjorn is a genius. I like what Gene Simmons said in the VH1 Behind the Music episode about ABBA; to paraphrase as best as I remember, when describing ABBA, Gene said, 'It was really well crafted pop music. If you don't understand that, you just don't get it.' Like I said, I'm paraphrasing from a show I saw in the early or mid-nineties, when VH1 was a thing. I thought it was exceptionally high praise, especially coming from Gene Simmons. Good musicians appreciate all genres of music.
No, they were just born privileged and entitled, like all Swedish, Norwegian and Dutch kids who have ever wanted to get into music production. If you've got the money for all the right gear you can do pretty much anything you want.
@@MariusLaru The international music scene was dictated and administered by two major countries: Britain & America. The British and American music industry ignored and rejected ABBA. This video kinda tells that story, along with the importance of their music videos. ABBA TV before MTV. Groups from America, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa dominated the pop/rock international music scene - all english speaking nation's. Countries, like Sweden, who's native language was not english were ignored. The thinking was, "how could non-native english language speakers write songs/melodies for english lyrics" ...... ABBA was rejected by the music industry. Nobody would publish their music. It was thrown away. Enter ABBA's plan. They figured out a way to get heard. First by entering Eurovision ('Waterloo' 1974) and also by sending low budget music clips to TV program directors around the world. The program directors liked them -- so they put them on TV. Boom!!! The people around the world loved ABBA. Radio stations then played their records. They managed to get heard by doing an "end around" the American and British controlled international music industry. ABBA is credited to busting up the American /British control. ABBA were the rebels in the music industry. It opened up doors for other non native english speaking nation's. ABBA were the ultimate indie band. They wrote the music they wanted to write. They did everything themselves. They released records on their timetable VS giant corporate label dictates. Today, everybody has a high respect for not only their high level of musicality, musicianship and professionalism, but because they never sold out to corporations. Benny Andersson said ABBA's music will never be used to sell a service or product. He said ABBA legacy business gets calls everyday for request to sample, use a song in commercial, etc..... He said the answer is always no. ABBA's thinking is if your music is heard all over, like in TV commercials, etc..... selling cars, computers, services... then the music gets diluted and is cheapened. They are the most intelligentlly run major international musical groups I know. One of the smartest things they did was going out on the top of their game. They were all still young, energetic, etc..... That image will always be intact. Smart!!!!!

All the music of ABBA brings back so many great memories of listening to them growing up in the 1970's! Good to see them with a new album out....and I plan on getting a copy this week. Thank you Agnetha, Benny, Bjorn and Anni -Frid for all the great music over the past 50 years.
In the 70's and 80's I grew up listening to Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, and Judas Priest. I hated the disco my younger sister loved like the Bee Gee's, K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and ABBA. It's amazing how tastes change when you age. I'm 57 now. I loved this video when it came out, and thanks to the algorithm, I loved again tonight. What an extraordinary group of talent with a ridiculous string of well written and produced music. My hats off, still a metal head, just not as stubborn.
I'm 60. I lived through the disco era. Abba was different... and alluring. I never set foot in a disco. Never used drugs. Couldn't afford alcohol. Am straight. And here I am, finding this absolutely hilarious, and catching all the "inside jokes". Superb!
I don't consider their music as Disco theey were in the Disco era but their music is Pop and their melodies are far better than Disco songs that's why their music is still appreciated today, the lonely thing really dated and old fashion were their videos and costumes
ABBA songs are fantastic...but I also feel a tinge of sadness these days when I listen to them, because it feels like a lost era, songs from a better time. So long ago now.
Just dive deep into the different scenes. So many great bands have done stuff on their own. The music industry (record labels) have lost it's way, and think they can still dictate what you like. I sah fuck the labels, and go for self made bands.
You can't believe the grief i took as a Metal Head during the 80's,,, long hair, smoking that ol green, lightning bolt ear ring and anddd, " turn that up thats ABBA""........lol......they all liked em, just wouldn't admit it......went to knock on a bunch of buds doors at various times, ABBA BLARING,, Them singing along,, finally get them to answer the door,." Ah hell, old lady got that shit going",,, " yea right dude, so what was that I was watching you sing along to thru the window there?""" Lol......
ABBA... I just can say: Thank you for the music! The world has became more beautiful since you brought us all that songs, eternally grateful. This world will never could pay all the joy you gave us. Thank you ABBA for each musical note, each accord, each step dance, each smile, you gave us the best of you. We will always love you.
ABBA started in 1972, Björn and Benny were from band in the 60s. Frida and Agnetha has solo careers then. Wow, I’m 13 and I know this. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
The elevator part gave me goosebumps and made me cry... It touched my heart. Abba is part of my soul somehow, they cheer me up everytime I listen to them!
The people who love the video, understand the context. They know ABBA's history. The entire industry were jealous of ABBA because they were a self contained indie band the made it big and never sold out to the corporate music puppeteers.
@@Dermacrosis Indeed. But how many ABBA music lovers know the history and the battles they had with the music industry puppeteers. Too include DJ's who would not play their records.... There is a reason B&B wrote their mini-musical (77) -- 'The Girl With The Golden Hair' : 1. Thank You For The Music 2. I, Wonder (Departure) 3. I'm A Marionette 4. Get On The Carousel (Live only - no studio) Listen to them in this order. It was ABBA's message/warning to artist not to sign away their artistic creativity to the industry puppeteers (record labels, etc....) and also, their polite "middle finger" to the industry puppeteers. The fsongs represent a young artist who loves music and wants to make it big. She leaves home and makes it big. Then she soon finds out she is losing control, she begins to feel like a marionette as the industry puppeteers start to control her. Then she tries to get off the carousel, but it's too late -- she is now owned by the music industry puppeteers. ______ The Swedish music puppeteers tried to bury them, then the American and British pop/rock music industry tried as well.... But ABBA went around them. Outsmarted them: Eurovision Song Contest (Waterloo) and their low budget music clips sent to TV stations around the world. BOOM! ABBA did an end around the corporate music industry puppeteers. They published and recorded on their home label. Produced everything themselves. They maintained control of their creativity. They never sold out to the corporate music world. They were a very unique band.
@@danbike9 How many people could find that sort of thing out back then? Hindsight is a dangerous thing, even more so when people whose parents' were not even around at the time can search things on the net now.
I’m pretty sure there are Dancing Queen ,Waterloo and The winner takes it all too🤩 it would be really nice if you add these in! (Or correct me if I’m wrong in any ways)
B for Thigh well, in certain circles we are. I generally love Punk and Metal, but damned if everytime ABBA comes on I don't act the fool and dance my ass off
It's kind of hilarious that both Abba and Bee Gees were considered as "lightweight" bands in the 70's and 80's, but 40 years later, they are sheer epics.
@Yoo-Hyun Kim Abba was never light weight. Some considered them a bit controversial because they were a bit too sexy. Bee Gees were as mainstream as music could be when they were at their peak.
I about damn cried when the record executive turned them down, but that scene when they get on the elevator makes it even more sad. The only thing that made it happier was seeing the real ABBA walk out to audition. Makes me realize how truly wonderful ABBA and the music from the 70's was.
As a 80s 90s kid and teen I grew up with ABBA my mom had this special CD of ABBA and we listened to it constantly to the point I know all the words still sing it to this day. LOVE LIVE ABBA ALWAYS AND FOREVER
That ending always gets me. Watching this is like watching The Lion King. You know what's going to happen, are going to cry at the same exact spot each time, but will feel so happy, delighted, and satisfied with the entire thing. ABBA forever! 💖🦋
I won't lie, I had to pick a tear away there. When the puppets say "Good luck" like contestants on a modern-day song contest it really brought home just how special this group was. Bring it on Blah-Blah's Got Talent, Idols, The Voice . . . . They were magic and will always be in my top 3 groups of all time! Damn, would you look at that; it's way past this kid from 1974's bed time. "Friday night and the lights are low . . . . mmmm, mmmm, mmm . . . . ".
Thank god after 40 years, our ABBA has return and releasing their new album call ABBA Voyage in this 5th November 2021. Thank you ABBA for your return.
i was 6 to 7 years old. i think their music is timeless, so at any time there will be some one who likees their sound. so thank you for the Music...ABBA
I also discovered it just now in June 2017, wonderful and funny. There will be NEVER be another group like them again, their song writing and singing lasted for 10 years.
M 5, Not sure if your allusion to "their song writing and singing lasted for 10 years" was a joke or just lack of knowledge because ABBA started in the early seventies and won Eurovision by the time our parents were teens... What I'm trying to say is that they've lasted about 46 years... and still no competition... In the past four decades or so, there have been great bands (in different genres) but there's never been anyone even close to dethroning ABBA... Just sayin' Cheers!
ejnava01...ABBA in fact lasted for 10 years...officially from 1972-1982. Yes, the music lives on to this day in all us fans' hearts, but it was over in 1982. Not sure where you think the joke is.
never never ever will be any band in planet will be like ABBA I been fan of ABBA from 1972 i was 7 years old and I didn't understand a single word of English i didn't know what the singing about but the voices of this Two ladies 👌👌makes me fall in love with this powerful group in world even today I'm still playing ABBA music.
I often avoid ABBA songs and this video watched yesterday for the first time made me question why.. Their music is simply wonderful and the sound defines a whole era, a generation and much of my life. Beyond time, beyond personal relations of the band, they captured something the world can share. I avoid the songs because it's a lot of emotion to process (sometimes) but when I can process it, I truly embrace them fully. Thank you Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid et-al. Thank you for the music so very much!
This made me really wish - as a totally younger generation - what the allure was like, the very gist of Abba for your generation who lived the 70s? I do feel regret for being outside what was that and not really having the family who shared or talked about music beyond talking what was rarely afforded to air on the private. ABBA and Thin Lizzy would've been on pirate radio stations back in the day! I grew up learning of the world as a small boy in a 911, post-soviet fall world. Where bling was all that mattered; and being poor, speaking for a cause and protest, or just being sentimental were for losers. some south park world. Everything seems to be of fake pretends of what's supposed to be new (a new way of life and so on...)
I kind of agree with you. I never make the effort to listen to Abba from day to day, but if I ever hear a medley of their songs, I immediately start thinking of their songs that I really like (Name of the Game, Fernando, Day before you came and Head over heels are real favourites) and the next thing I'm playing sing after song. I'm a child of the 70s and it wasn't cool to like Abba. They bring back such a great feeling of nostalgia.
one must admit, ABBA was as a unique sound as they come, a style and taste all their own. songs that are so much fun and addicting. theres been nobody like them. i mean come on a song about Waterloo? in the 20th century? and it ROCKS lol. its simply amazing.
The Kinks did Waterloo Sunset in the 60s. Not about the battle, though neither is Abba's song. Having said that, I've always loved about 50% of Abba's singles.
@W A so go watch theirs then. Your list is as derivative as the former. Blondie has a unique sound, pat benetar? The Beatles they weren't influenced by the music seasons and beach boys ah whatever
This this madd me cry! To beutyful! No words! I want another movie with the abba songs! Abba meand air and without air you just CAN'T live...😭 Mamma mia! How incredible can some persons be!
thank you for pointing that out! as soon as the fancy office chair swivels around and I saw him as the exec, I paused the video and laughed, instantly hearing him screaming something ridiculous to Vyvyan ... and is that Neil Innes ("The Rutles") as his assistant?
I'm speechless after watching this. How I've missed them!! ABBA, I'm just 20 years old & like many, you're in our blood. I grew up listening to your songs! Wish you guys never grew older. I can never get enough of you 💗💗💗 #ABBAforever
Were they mocking themselves? They were showing they were different to "industry puppets" controlled by managers (ie. the puppeteer in the video) by appearing in person at the end to contrast themselves
This is REMARKABLE. One of the best and most creative ways to pay homage to a sensation that has proven itself timeless by my humble estimation! So much work involved, from lyrics included in the dialogue to cameos, then those Spitting Image puppets - this is FANTASTIC, and I HOPE the rest of the world gets to see it! THIS IS RELEVANT ART! I'll be sharing the heck out of this myself. BRAVO AND ENCORE! LET'S HAVE A SERIES! ❤️

@@Pipsterz You know, his comment IS funny when you think or say it in the Colonel Klink voice! 😁 Say to say, there are probably more people under 30 now who saw Colonel Klink on that episode of The Simpsons. I doubt very many people under 20 now have actually SEEN an episode of Hogan's Heroes! A lot of the old TV shows that used to be syndicated nationally and shown on local cable channels (before EVERY channel became part of a network conglomerate) are restricted to speciality cable channels you have to pay extra for (like MeTV). Maybe Hogan's Heroes is on Hulu? I dunno... I haven't seen it in years, either, and saw it as a kid (under 11) when most of the humor flew over my head!

Wish I got to experience those days instead of this horrible era humanity is currently in
It was a cold war between USA versus USSR.
Now, it is trade war between USA versus PRC. Will there be better music?
There was a joy to their lyrics. Not a more innocent time, but perhaps one where people lived more *in* the world.
Just dive deep into the different scenes. So many great bands have done stuff on their own. The music industry (record labels) have lost it's way, and think they can still dictate what you like. I sah fuck the labels, and go for self made bands.

Rik Mayall is so good in this. He is to comedic acting as ABBA is to music. I love this video so much.
There are two type of people:
-People who love Abba
-People who love Abba but dont admit it
I wish people wouldn't think of Abba as guilty pleasure music because they're so fucking gooooooooooood. 😭
I won’t admit it but yes

ABBA... I just can say: Thank you for the music! The world has became more beautiful since you brought us all that songs, eternally grateful. This world will never could pay all the joy you gave us. Thank you ABBA for each musical note, each accord, each step dance, each smile, you gave us the best of you. We will always love you.
So much quality for these poor musical times. Abba is the best musical group of the 70's. Greetings from Chile.

The people who love the video, understand the context. They know ABBA's history. The entire industry were jealous of ABBA because they were a self contained indie band the made it big and never sold out to the corporate music puppeteers.
Or they just loved the uplifting music even with their deep songs as both made you feel good.
@@Dermacrosis Indeed. But how many ABBA music lovers know the history and the battles they had with the music industry puppeteers. Too include DJ's who would not play their records....
There is a reason B&B wrote their mini-musical (77) -- 'The Girl With The Golden Hair' :
1. Thank You For The Music
2. I, Wonder (Departure)
3. I'm A Marionette
4. Get On The Carousel (Live only - no studio)
Listen to them in this order.
______
The Swedish music puppeteers tried to bury them, then the American and British pop/rock music industry tried as well....

It's kind of hilarious that both Abba and Bee Gees were considered as "lightweight" bands in the 70's and 80's, but 40 years later, they are sheer epics.
Bee Gees were NEVER considered lightweight. Saturday night fever is one of the biggest grossing movies of all time. You need to check your sources
@Yoo-Hyun Kim Abba was never light weight. Some considered them a bit controversial because they were a bit too sexy. Bee Gees were as mainstream as music could be when they were at their peak.
Maybe their TUNES were considered lightweight? Like, poppy and easygoing. That's not the same as the ARTIST being inferior though :)
Am I the only one who remembers seeing this in theaters before some movie?

M 5, Not sure if your allusion to "their song writing and singing lasted for 10 years" was a joke or just lack of knowledge because ABBA started in the early seventies and won Eurovision by the time our parents were teens... What I'm trying to say is that they've lasted about 46 years... and still no competition... In the past four decades or so, there have been great bands (in different genres) but there's never been anyone even close to dethroning ABBA... Just sayin' Cheers!

Ein Meilenstein in der Musikgeschichte der für immer im Gedächtnis und im Herzen bleiben wird !!!
