First of all thank you very much everyone in the USA who helped to bring this war to an end. One of my uncles ran up the beach on D day and was shot in the ankle. Six days later my father landed on the same beach with no resistance. My father was asked what he would like to do when he was enlisted. My Dad said he would rather like to be a Spitfire pilot. He was told they had enough of them at the moment. My dad ended up in the transport corp. He drove ambulances at one point and had a machine gun under his seat and was glad he never had to use it. I live in the UK in Canterbury.

Sir, thank you for sharing your family's wartime experiences. It's incredibly moving to hear about the sacrifices and contributions made by your relatives during such a pivotal moment in history. Your uncle's bravery on D-Day and your father's service in the transport corps highlight the diverse roles individuals played in the war effort. It's a testament to their courage and resilience. It's also fascinating to learn about your father's initial aspirations to become a Spitfire pilot and the twists of fate that led him to serve in the transport corps instead. Thank you once again for sharing your story.

Enola Gay's crew is incredibly representative of thought at the time. Aside from two guys from Michigan, they are all from different states. Back in the day, diversity meant you sought people from a range of areas that differed geographically so that if that if a single unit got crushed, no single area suffered excessively (sorry, Bedford, Virginia). The 82nd Airborne Division was called the "All-American" Division because it drew people from all 48 states.

Thank you for highlighting the diversity within Enola Gay's crew and the broader context of diversity in military units during that time. The 82nd Airborne Division's nickname, the "All-American" Division, reflects the inclusivity and representation of soldiers from all 48 states, embodying the strength and unity of the entire nation. It's a testament to the collaborative effort and shared sacrifice that characterized American military operations during World War II.

Every person who laments the use of the atomic bomb must first listen to, and inculcate the rational of the time.

It is so easy to look back 75 years or so and say the US should have done this or that and the Japanese should have done this or that, forgetting hindsight is 2020, and actually being there with the current experiences of the times change everything. We must have done something right for Japan to become one of our greatest allies and trade partners today.

I constantly wrestle with the idea that both Japan and the part of Germany controlled by the Allies got off easy after the war, but I can't argue that both are now reliable trade and military partners with democratic governments that are fully onboard with modern notions of human rights. I can't confidently predict that if the few thousand war criminals I think should have met justice at the end of a noose the end result would have been any more positive for the world or the Western powers.

Funny, my father served in the USN and said the same thing to me when I was in 8th grade. He said that the last year of battle convinced the U.S. that any direct attack on the mainland would be terrible to undertake. As you said, hindsight is so much easier than foresight.
