I guess I am failing to see why someone wouldn’t just buy a normal 2 piece strap that looks more finished since you removed the whole reason of using a NATO which is to have a fail safe if a spring bar breaks.
Sorry to be blunt, but that it pointless. The whole purpose of a NATO strap is to save the watch when one spring bar breaks. This strap doesn’t do that, so you may as well wear a two-piece fabric strap.
Nato design singularly was to prevent the entire watch slipping off through loose fixed bar lugs that were common back in the day. That's the only reason for the extra strap and loop. There's a documentary about it.
@@Ipeacocks Nope. You need that pass through the bottom, otherwise any strap design would still require two spring bars to keep the watch on your wrist. With a normal NATO, the strap goes all the way around your wrist, and would stay on whether you had a watch attached to it or not, which is how 1 spring bar is enough to save the watch. The one in this video is basically turning a NATO strap into the same behavior as a normal two piece strap without being two pieces. Granted I don't think people have to worry much about spring bars coming loose, but all it takes is one time. Another benefit of the NATO is that the pressure amount and direction on the spring bar is pretty constant, which also means it's less likely to have wear and tear that can cause a spring to come loose. With a 2 piece strap, the strap uses the spring bar like a rotating hinge. With a NATO, the strap is generally just resting on the spring bar and putting some downward pressure. NATO's also don't just have one layer, but two, one above the spring bar that passes through and above the other spring bar, and one below that which passes under the spring bar. This is why if one spring bar comes off, the other one is still held.
This defeats the purpose of using a Nato. Nato straps are tool straps to avoid your watch from falling off your wrist if one of the spring bars is busted. Makes no sense.
even on a Nato strap, if one spring bar is busted, you would still have another one to temporarily hold onto your watch. A Nato strap wouldn't stop the watch from flying off the end where the spring bar is busted.
LMAO… best comment on this video.. I came here to highlight the exact point in more blunt terms. Nice attempt but with all the arguments of spring bar failure the day to day practicality of this doesn’t even work… Just don’t wear a watch if you’re that finicky
One of my favorite features of NATO straps is that you don't have to remove spring bars to install them. So easy to change to a new strap every morning. Would love to see a version which can pass right through, without having to remove that one spring bar
Bro said “what if I ripped off a CNS Paratrooper strap… and made it worse?” 😮 Also, patent pending means nothing from a legal standpoint until it’s awarded.

Very cool. For me though, I like NATO and MN straps because they remove the negative space between the spring bar and the case that you get with a leather band and some bracelets. This isn’t for me, but well done!
So basically you remove the intended functionality of the NATO and just focus on aesthetics. The antithesis of what a tool watch is all about but hey look, it’s thinner!!
But the point of a nato is security when spring bar failure occurs. You're basically complaining about a crucial feature of a nato as originally intended. A zero pass strap is not that different from a two piece nylon (looking like a nato). I appreciate the effort but this is fixing a non-existent problem.
Criticism of the NATO strap is totally unjustified. Cutting the extra strap defeats the purpose of keeping the watch away from the wrist to allow ventilation and lessen sweating. Also the watch can be stowed by reverse looping and it provides substantial cover for the front and back of the watch when kept with other items in the bag or pocket. It's the ultimate utilitarian strap.
You’ve totally removed all the benefits of a true NATO type strap. As far as the so called feeling of the strap under the watch I don’t find it noticeable As far as fitting under a cuff you’re version doesn’t eliminate it either being just as bulky if not more so on the sides. A nato isn’t meant to be worn with a dress shirt.
Sorry, but all you did is to defeat the purpose of a NATO or Zulu strap. Now if a spring bar breaks, the watch falls off your wrist. Recommend a Zulu strap for one layer below the watch OR the alternate method of attaching a standard NATO that again is only one layer below the watch which also has the added benefit of now moving the strap to the bottom of the wrist versus on the outside, which is just plain annoying.
Not a fan of double pass natos. Single pass are amazing however. I think the beauty of a nato is being able to keep your watch safe in case of a spring bar failure.
On the face of it, it's a, cool idea but when I think about it, it doesn't really make sense. We use NATO style straps in particularly rough environments and have to put up with the wierd loop and keeper at the side of the wrist as a, trade off for keeping the watch on your wrist if you lose a spring bar. There's no real point in having that awkward looking piece if you're not going to have the protection. It's better to buy a good standard canvas or nylon strap as it just looks better. Or, cut off the double pass bit or use an original single pass while still having the safety with a bit less bulk under the watch. A good quality single pass or a cut away NATO will not feel flimsy at all. What we have here is a strap that's not very esthetic but it doesn't provide the safety. It's basically an ugly looking strap with no real benefit with unnecessary bulk on your wrist for no good reason.
I just got my honey Dijon nylon in the mail and I LOVE it! I’m using it on my white dial Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition. It’s a perfect match. The mustard strap matches the faux lume on the hands. Zero Point strap! None of the functionality of a real NATO strap and more inconvenient to wear than a conventional two piece strap. What is the value of a phoney military strap that can't be fitted to a fixed bar military watch and offers no protection if one of the (now exposed) spring bars fails on a civilian watch? Zero.
The Watch Steward has been making a strap basically like this for ages. It just doesn't have the loop keepers and instead has an MN clasp. But still, pretty much the same thing.
Folks, check out the Zuludiver Octopod. It is clean, has no foldovers or hangers, and has the convenience and security of a milled bracelet clasp. Please pass on the ribbed straps because they are stiff and a PITA for exchanges. The standard and elastic straps are fantastic. Brilliant clasp concept.
just buy normal straps?..... like i really don't see the appeal. you are just getting a thicker watch strap without any of the benefits of a true nato strap... if you just get normal leather or fiber watch straps you have the same thing in a thinner package. also, it took 3 years to make this?!?! could've been done in like 3 months tops lmfao
Great and will check it out for casual wear. However I use natos when I need the intended safety it’s designed for, I.e. when I go diving, and it’s already saved my watch at least once. But as said, will demo check them out.
I actually do manual labor daily while wearing nice German, Japanese and Swiss watches. I like my watches to be used and aged as functional tools rather than status jewelry . I pop spring bars regularly. I also use my dive watches to dive, and have likewise popped spring bars under water. A NATO is a functional tool for me. This idea is the equivalent of pumping fake motor noise through speakers in a modern Porsche. There will be a guy who loses his Rolex because of this idea.
I love how easy it is to change nato straps for different looks, I love knowing that 1 missing spring bar won't drop my watch, but these aren't essential for everyday. I do congratulate you on the innovation shown here in such an established form factor of a wristwatch. I'm looking forward to giving one a go 👌
Nice one Max, this is a great option for those watches on the thicker side who love the versatility of a NATO. Well done, I hope the sales go well. I'm certainly interested.
The thing I like about the nato is that it puts material between wrist and watch. This stops sweating and sticking. So I simply use the single pass over the back of the watch and the bulk goes under the bottom of my wrist. Best compromise. But nice alternative design. Well done.
People are angry because he has removed the functionality of the nato strap (he even mentions this) but kept the design and made it “look nicer”. He did what he set out to accomplish. He didn’t say it was made to work exactly like the nato strap…
I would love a zero pass leather strap for the FXD. Would you consider doing removable hardware to make it fixed lug compatible for the future? Look at what Erika’s and Nick Manley designs do for fixed lug compatibility if that helps
Very similar to a Marine Nationale as in putting the spring bars over the strap and feeding your hand through less the single pass of a MN..SUPERB invention love it....
I think it largely depends on the watch. I have no problem at all with the double pass on my watches, it barely shows. Also, the fact that it's a bit upward removes the problem of the crown scratching the hand skin : it gives more flexibility to the hand, especially when I am physically active. Finally, I appreciate the fact that I can change the strap without touching the springs.
@@bbuck1bbuck1 Yes. It's a debate on NATO and as the majority seems to not like NATO design, I thought I would share a different opinion and defend it. Don't take it as a criticism or an agression for the project, anyway, just reading at the comments, there is obviously a market so it's going to work. We all have a choice now. Just a gentleman talk, thank you.
Personally the reason I like a NATO is because of the functionality and security. I do a lot of camping and bang my watch around. And IMHO the Achilles Heel of a watch is the spring bar. If that breaks you're screwed. I lost a nice watch that I really liked do to that very reason. I like the NATO's security. (I've also stopped wearing an expensive specialty 'field watch' watch for that very reason. Timex Expedition Indiglo for me now when camping). Your single pass is interesting and probably worth trying so I will take a look at it. And your honesty about the potential drawback of the zero pass is much appreciated. But, if you have a thin enough traditional NATO woven nylon strap the double pass under the case back should not be an issue, eh? However, innovation is always a good thing and I applaud you for your ingenuity. I wish you much success.
What kind of BS is this here? 🤨 Before the NATO strap was invented, there was the RAF strap invented. As the Name says, it was for the Royal Air Force. This is also the strap, Connery got on his Rolex in the first Movies. The strap here in the video is also simply an RAF strap but worn incorrectly. I see this video for the first time and I am shocked what kind of Nonsens is talked about in the internet over and over again, just to make money.
Fun idea! It looks like you took the single pass NATO strap and widened the inner loop to allow the hand to pass through. The tradeoff from a practicality standpoint is reasonable (just look at any standard watch strap and if a spring bar breaks the watch will fall), but I think the fact that you have to slide your hand through before tightening (as opposed to just slapping it on your wrist) makes this more of a difficult sell (Apple does this with their elastic bands, but now there is the added complexity of tightening it down). Could you have achieved a similar aesthetic result (and I guess conventional result if we're considering the weight distribution) with a conventional 2-piece fabric strap by just doubling the layers?
Nice product! However I have a 9.25 wrist. Wear 60mm watch and use NATO now. I like the fact there is not material underneath the watch. Do you make longer versions?
You can just buy a 2 piece “nato” it’s clear to look at that it’s not an actual nato and you lose all the benefits. So may as well just go with a 2 piece as all this is doing is simulating a 2-piece
I just ordered myself one. Nato straps were designed to be used on watches with fixed bars. Like the legendary Rolex Milsub or the modern day Tudor FXD. So, without acception, these different options are all for people who just want the looks of a nato strap. Therefore discussion about functionality is redundant.
There's a way to mount a NATO strap with only "one" pass underneath without compromising the integrity of the strap. I will try one for "fashion/comfort only" and to support the channel. I also respect new ideas.
I completely see the purpose of this strap, ESPECIALLY for fixed bar watches that have no risk of having a spring-bar failure. Ignore the detractors, Max! The Zero Pass straps have purpose!
You've invented..... a normal watch strap. You eliminated some problems but completely overlooked on your watch and a nato that a tucked big lump of strap at the end is the naffest look out there, like abysmally bad.
I have the Anachronist strap. Like with most things, there are pros and cons to it. My Omega spring bars are pretty sturdy, and I’m a desk diver. I’m not super worried about it.
The primary function of a NATO strap is to prevent the watch from being lost if one of the spring bars breaks. In this “No pass” system, this factor is lost and we have a watch strap without this functionality. I don’t know if it’s worth it.
Yooooooo! I just got my zero pass in. I am not a NATO guy. I have always wanted to be and could never find anything that works. Obviously the function of a traditional NATO is out the window, but I am also not storming the beaches of Normandy. It looks and feels so awesome! I will be ordering one of every color and I will be begging for more colors! Awesome product.
I could definitely see a version without the extra metal keeper at 6 (so you could just slide the whole strap through ) work well for watches with fixed springars like for the Tudor Pelagos FXD. No springbars to break, so it would be the perfect use for your design
Nick Mankey has entered the chat....hook straps are different but similar design with nylon. Curious if you've ever crossed paths? You've crossed swords as the competition now! Cool idea Max!

@@WatchCrunchOfficial brooo you're getting destroyed in the comments. Apparently the poor folk who paid months ago have not even received it!!! And your product is crap. It's a sad sad day in the watch world.
Zero.
This sacrifices function for form, i guess it depends on which one is more important to you.
I choose any belt type strap like marine nationale, nato, zulu etc for one reason: Safe the watch, so nonsense for that strap.
The Watch Steward has been making a strap basically like this for ages. It just doesn't have the loop keepers and instead has an MN clasp. But still, pretty much the same thing.
I was thinking this. I’m all for more cool options, but nothing has been “invented” here. A pre-existing idea has been adapted to apply to NATOs 🤨
Totally defeats the intended purpose of a NATO strap……to stop the head of the watch from being lost if a spring bar fails.
The whole point of this is having those keepers there for the look.
@JohnnyPhate. Remember that competition is good. The best concept wins. It is what it is.
yeah but the octopod clasp is overly long, too long for many wrists and long than L2L of many watches.
Love this, happy to support you. Just bought two!
@@JimLecinski Clearly, you've never owned one or handled one in person. Your take is blatantly false.
just buy normal straps?..... like i really don't see the appeal. you are just getting a thicker watch strap without any of the benefits of a true nato strap... if you just get normal leather or fiber watch straps you have the same thing in a thinner package. also, it took 3 years to make this?!?! could've been done in like 3 months tops lmfao
The marine national is the perfect rugged watch strap. The watch sits low, it's super secure and it has a classic look
interesting design but curious why this is superior to a normal 2 piece strap?
because it's one piece ;)
I love how easy it is to change nato straps for different looks, I love knowing that 1 missing spring bar won't drop my watch, but these aren't essential for everyday. I do congratulate you on the innovation shown here in such an established form factor of a wristwatch. I'm looking forward to giving one a go 👌
"Never had one fail on me." Everybody knows what's a statement to regret later.
Nice one Max, this is a great option for those watches on the thicker side who love the versatility of a NATO. Well done, I hope the sales go well. I'm certainly interested.
I've actually worn my NATO's with cheap spring bars so I had that reason. :D And sure enough, a bar did fail once. I didn't even notice.
I just chop off the extra loop on a NATO strap and turn it into a pass through. I can never find the design I like on pass throughs.
I always cut the second strap. and I always use a single strap - because if I lose a spring bar - the other is holding the watch in place.
Lol. I've had my spring bars fail and the nato strap has saved my watch from just obliterating itself from my stupidity.
This literally serves no purpose... If you lose a spring bar, you can kiss your speedy goodbye...🤠
I would love a zero pass leather strap for the FXD. Would you consider doing removable hardware to make it fixed lug compatible for the future? Look at what Erika’s and Nick Manley designs do for fixed lug compatibility if that helps
We definitely prototyped it, will keep your comment in mind, thanks!
Yah, more options for the FXD would be fantastic
Thank you for this comment. I was on my way to purchase the grey one for my FXD but glad I didn’t blind fire the credit card trigger!
Just received mine today. Have to say this is pretty amazing. I am impressed. Good job!
After a few days of having it on the wrist its really awesome!
Very similar to a Marine Nationale as in putting the spring bars over the strap and feeding your hand through less the single pass of a MN..SUPERB invention love it....
Damn. Nick Mankey Designs Hook Strap.
I'll have to send Nick a message!
@@WatchCrunchOfficial 😂
I think it largely depends on the watch. I have no problem at all with the double pass on my watches, it barely shows. Also, the fact that it's a bit upward removes the problem of the crown scratching the hand skin : it gives more flexibility to the hand, especially when I am physically active.
Finally, I appreciate the fact that I can change the strap without touching the springs.
Okay well if it’s not a problem for you then you won’t buy it. I mean.
Lol I came up with this when I first got into watches, but natos always looked cheap so i never wore them 😅 I didn't realize this was new!
Great minds think alike
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Haha clearly! Good luck with your strap store!
What kind of BS is this here? 🤨
Before the NATO strap was invented, there was the RAF strap invented.
I understand the need for zulu hardware, but this is a huge miss imo.
YT is full of nonsensical ideas. This is one of them.
You invented a long single pass nato
I hope your day gets better
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Sorry Max, I still love you
I agree how product is so stupid. And he says that garbage to everyone who tells him
, which is many many many people
Just Cut the secondary strap and make it a single passthrough nato. Problem solved.
This concept is very much like The Watch Steward elastic straps in a more traditional material.
It has the downsides of both the nato and a normal strap! I'm not sure I see the point in this
We wanted to keep it to one piece and retain the nato aesthetic. There are more additions than just lengthening the strap if you look closer ;)
Therefore discussion about functionality is redundant.
thewatchsteward has done the same with the marine nationale straps. Makes a world of difference in terms of comfort.
What is the point of this? It defeats the whole point of a NATO (the watch staying on if a spring bar breaks). At this point just buy a normal strap
I literally had this idea after buying a Nick Mankey strap and couldn’t believe nobody had done it. Thank you for making this!
Cheers!
Would love to have a version of this where I didn't need to remove the 12 o'clock spring bar.
From the inventor of the siv without holes and the bowl with holes...😂
You lost me at Seal Team 9😅😅😅…Defeats the purpose of a NATO strap, good job 😂😂😂
Thanks for your opinion
@@WatchCrunchOfficial Thanks for inventing a watch strap. Do we have you to thank for inventing time also?
Good idea I guess if people don’t like the original nato straps. The podcast however is so staged that it feels like a school presentation
so when will you come out with a version that works on fixed bars? anything in the works?
I have the Anachronist strap. Like with most things, there are pros and cons to it. My Omega spring bars are pretty sturdy, and I’m a desk diver. I’m not super worried about it.
Oh man, this is such a fantastic idea! Impatiently waiting for a version in black. 👍
They look great Max - best ideas are always simple! Be good if David (at ST) could ship direct for your UK customers - is that a possibility?
Yes I will talk to him about this if the launch goes well
Congrats man ..Something innovative and practical …
Thanks brother 🙏
The primary function of a NATO strap is to prevent the watch from being lost if one of the spring bars breaks. In this “No pass” system, this factor is lost and we have a watch strap without this functionality. I don’t know if it’s worth it.
Yooooooo! I just got my zero pass in. I am not a NATO guy. I have always wanted to be and could never find anything that works. Obviously the function of a traditional NATO is out the window, but I am also not storming the beaches of Normandy. It looks and feels so awesome! I will be ordering one of every color and I will be begging for more colors! Awesome product.
Congrats man !!!
Looks cumbersome to take off. I might break the spring bars as I take it off lol. It is a fresh idea though.
I could definitely see a version without the extra metal keeper at 6 (so you could just slide the whole strap through ) work well for watches with fixed springars like for the Tudor Pelagos FXD. No springbars to break, so it would be the perfect use for your design
Nice, but $66 Australian to ship a $65 strap…..ahh no thanks!
Just changed it to a standard $35 for international
Nick Mankey has entered the chat....hook straps are different but similar design with nylon. Curious if you've ever crossed paths? You've crossed swords as the competition now!
Cool idea Max!
Yes this immediately came to mind, they've married an NMD hook strap with a nato material, buckle, and keepers. Interesting concept I guess.
You rang 👀
@@justthisguyyouknow42 something like that! I'm seeing quite a number of differences. But the open caseback concept is definitely the way to go.
Nick in the house!! 🙌
@@nickmankeydesigns yeah the way you put it in is very similar, making a big loop for your wrist and then bringing it in from both ends.
So cool, I have always wanted the look of a NATO with any of its advantages.
Love what you’ve done here. Any plans to make a thinner version that will fit a pelagos fxd?
I use my double pass natos as a single pass, it's simple although I think your idea is a winner 👍
Thanks Jason!
Congratulations! Does it come with different length. I don’t like the look of two fold at the end, it was my main issue to go with nato straps. For my BB 58 I ordered the original nato strap
