  • This is a short “what you need” video explaining what’s involved in converting a 1981 Yamaha xv750 to a later model starting system with a new solenoid.
    All the part numbers and diagrams are listed in the video so check it out!
    Also check me out on Instagram for more frequent updates of this build as there will be more content coming soon on the cafe racer XV750

    Eyelids deep in the upgrade now. Mechs all done but i get weary come wire time. Your video gets kinda bouncy right at that key area but i think i get the gist. Hopefully. Going to try

    Only another Virago owner will appreciate your joy at 7:30 when it starts properly - or like any other bike😁. Thanks for the vid - just waiting for the paint to cure on the new engine cover then will be completing all of this!!

      Could not recommend it more! Just make sure you have that hole in the casting that I mention in the video, before you start ordering parts haha.

    You've convinced me dude, I'm gonna try the upgrade on my 83 Virago. Wish me luck. PS, loving the looks of your bike, especially now it's all painted 👍

      memsybabe yewww! Do it. One of the best things I’ve done on the bike for sure.
      I couldn’t handle having a beautiful bike and having it sound like absolute crap when it starts not to mention the metal material ripping off the starter gears 😂

      So, thanks for the encouragement dude. I managed to get all the parts you mentioned shipped to me in the UK, from the US. Is there any more advice you think would be useful; I'm still not 100% confident about the wiring I'll need to do to add the new starter solenoid...

      @@mattfranco8715 ..hey dude. I actually had your video in one hand, and the new starter gear and wiring in the other. Worked thru it, with your help. And you're right, made such a big difference. Turned it into a bike I actually want to keep now. And to think, I might not have given it a go if I didn't find your video. How's yours holding up? Be good to see some updates on it if you've got the time.

      Glad I could help! I’ve heard so many other ways to fix it and I think it’s still the best way. More Expensive but the best.
      That makes me feel good haha!
      Yeah my bikes going great. Few changes since the last video. I’ll definitely make another update video soon. I built another xv750 but a bobber this time. Short videos of both coming soon. Just made one of my shed aswell. Not much else to do in lockdown 😂

    So the #6 "Gear Idler 2" needs to be from the updated year bike as well? It looks similar to the existing 1982 part. Did you need to buy the new idler or did you reuse all of your existing starting clutch assembly? Thanks man!

      Hey mate, cannot believe I hadn’t seen this comment for 9 months haha. My bad.
      From memory the new gear from the updated model was needed purely because the sliding fork needed to slide into it.
      Have a look on parts fish and cross reference the part numbers. Pretty sure they are different. Well I got a new starter motor with a long snout, new starter clutch from eBay ($40?) and yeah the sliding fork and cover etc. the later model 1100 covers fit too but I ended up machine spacers and stuff so the stator and coil pick ups worked as they should.
      Again sorry for the late reply.

    Hi Matt,
    Great video and thank you for restoring hope re fixing the starter noise in my 1981 xv.
    Im in the ACT, can i ask where you got all the parts from?

      Hey! Thanks mate appreciate it.
      Haha all is not lost! It’s just abit pricey but after it’s all done it will never sound like a box of rocks again.
      I got all of the parts through my local Yamaha dealer and eBay for the second hand stuff like the cover/ solenoid etc.

    Hey Matt,
    When you swapped from the gen 1 to gen 2 starter I’m assuming the pickup coil went from a 2 pole (gen 1) to the single pole (gen 2) … did you have to change the TCI from the gen 1?
    Thanks
    Andrew

    • @mattfranco8715
      @mattfranco8715  2 роки тому +2

      When I changed to the gen 2 starter I didn’t change the tci at all because I used my original stator and pick ups and bolted them in. I ended up trying the 85 1000 starter side cover so I purchased a later model 750 cover. But had to machine spacers so the stator and pickups were in the right spot in relation to the rotor. It’s ran like that for 18months now no problem.

    So your saying that the cover of the later xv´s fit o´ the earlier one´s? I have a 82 but it´s unreliable, i need to fix the starter and was thinking of switching the whole engine of a 92 but now i don´t know if it´s necesary

    • @mattfranco8715
      @mattfranco8715  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah they fit perfectly. The issue with the new style covers is that the stator and pick ups are in a different spot so it won’t work.
      So you need to space the pick up and stator out so it lines up with the rotor correctly.

      Thanx, a friend of mine is selling his 85 x 1000 chain driven virago. Do they have the same problem cause his starter looks different already. Here in Europe the are called tr 1´s. Very rare. Most are 750´s.
