I had the privilege of hearing this live, and I was blown away. Thank you so much for sharing the perfect depiction of grief with me. I will forever remember this performance and how it made me openly weep for the rest of my life.
I got to see the premier of this piece after Mathew Maslanka gave a presentation, and sat in the audience with me and my high school band and a few other bands from different schools. It was a truly moving experience. I am not an emotional person, but I was almost brought to tears by his presentation and then hearing the music.
32:09 the euphonium is like grief corrupting a beautiful memory, this is an innovation in music's ability to describe emotion. For such an indescribable emotion, the music portrays it more completely than anything I've ever heard.
