How To Turn an Old Dress Into a Boho Patchwork Coat

- WOW! In this DIY video, I am going to take you step by step and show you how you can create your very own, one of a kind, boho patchwork coat. This is not as hard as it looks. This luscious coat started as a thrifted dress and was embellished with pieces from a vintage blanket, and patches made from blazers and a skirt. We will also do some creative cutting and sewing to make flared cuff sleeves and pockets. Even the button closure is upcycled (no button hole making...yay!). I'm sure you will find this a very rewarding project whether you make this for yourself or you upcycle fashion to sell.

Oh there are some really good upcycling and enlarging tops, pants and dresses on UA-cam. I am going to try to do those and channel my inner Traci while doing so. Congrats on quitting- I am 20 years nonsmoker. You will be there in no time!

I get such great ideas from you. I have a dress that never fit right, the sleeves are very tight but I love the fabric. Turning it into a coat and putting triangles in the sleeves would solve the problem.

One thought when making the pockets, if you want slanted pockets, I think it’s better and more pleasing to the eye to pin them on straight but make the top of the pocket slanted when you draw & cut it out, rather than making it square at the top. Then the pocket is on straight but the top is slanted for easier access.
It’s probably a good idea to top stitch right across the top of the pocket anyway as it would strengthen it & help to stop it stretching & getting baggy.

Hi Tracy. I'm a retired sewing professional (70) and I just have a little tip for your pockets. Best to make the turning hole at the sides or bottom bc you are going to sew topstitch the pockets onto the garment anyway; catching the hole . Therefore leaving the top of pocket free of stitches.
Of course in sewing there is always more ways to 'skin a cat' I always say! 😊

I am enthralled by your coat video. It was the first of your videos I have ever watched but I will be a fan from now on. I dream about that coat every night since viewing. I certainly wish I could purchase that beautiful object...it is not only Bohemian in it's look but reminds me of Russia, where I have spent much time. Several years ago I saw a wonderful coat made out of sweaters by an artist in up-state New York and I love wearing it. Love your videos! My only suggestion is to leave the bottom of the pocket to turn right side out. That way you are closing it at the same time you sew it to the garment.
